Bill Kristol seems to confuse the "Evil Empire" speech with the "Tear Down This Wall" speech some 4 years later.
The "Evil Empire" speech was a speech delivered by U.S. President Ronald Reagan to the National Association of Evangelicals on March 8, 1983 during the Cold War. In that speech, Reagan referred to the Soviet Union as an "evil empire" and as "the focus of evil in the modern world". Reagan was told by his advisors not to do this, but it provided an inspiration to those behind the Iron Curtain that the Soviet Union was the problem. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall", also known as the Berlin Wall Speech, was a speech delivered by United States President Ronald Reagan in West Berlin on June 12, 1987. Reagan called for the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, to open the Berlin Wall, which had separated West and East Berlin since 1961. This speech is not about regime change or a coup, but rather about freedom. Posted by: SMOD at March 28, 2022 09:49 AM (RHGPo) 105

104 Bill Kristol seems to confuse the "Evil Empire" speech with the "Tear Down This Wall" speech some 4 years later.
111 Rifle Length:
Japanese Army Arisaka 6.5mm rifles in the first decade of the 1900s were 50 inches long, without bayonet. I expect the Japanese bayonets of that period had a blade about 12 inches long. So, 62 inches overall length, a bit over 5 feet, for the weapon. Posted by: Gref When the OAL of the rifle is taller than your soldiers... Posted by: rickb223 at March 28, 2022 09:52 AM (egg9a) When the bayonet charge is still one of your basic assault tactics, having your rifle double as a spear is a feature not a bug. Most military rifles were looong in that period for the "spear" reason. There are two types of Arisakas primarily used in wwii. Type 38 which was the replacement of the older type 30 which has a length of 50 inches without a bayonet and the later type 99 which is shorter due to a shorter barrel and is 44 inches long without the bayonet. There are carbine versions of the type 38 and a rare musket length type 99 that is almost 50 inches. The type 44 carbine was derived from the type 38 model. Then there are oddballs such as italian made carcanos chambered in 6.5 Japanese, training rifles, paratroopers models and so on.

The most common Japanese bayonet by far was the Type 30, which was used on most of the Japanese rifles from 1897 to 1945. It was even attached to light machine guns! The designation Type 30 comes from its adoption in the 30th year of the reign of the Meiji Emperor, i.e. 1897 (the Meiji Emperor was Emperor Hirohito's grandfather). The overall length of a typical Type 30 bayonet is 510 mm (20-1/16"), with the blade comprising 398 mm (15-5/8") of that.

I have a boat dock neighbor who is a doctor. In 2020 in April/May peak hysteric time, as we said hi for the first time of the season, I said I can put one on around you if you want. I was polite that way, figure he is a doctor he must be ultra cautious and shit. And he was like nah fuck that noise man. Masks dont do shit for this. But funnily enough while doctors I know had that attitude, nurses were the exact opposite. Would not go anywhere without double masking or wearing those visor things. Zillow tells me my house went up in value $10,000 over the weekend, which is close to $40,000 this year alone, more than I make going to work. Given what houses are selling for in my area I actually believe those numbers. Unfortunately this will just barely cover my increased gas and groceries expenditures, which aren't just on paper.

I had the joy of jury selection. A pool of 90 people kept standing and giving their 2 cents on what the prosecution or defense said. A high number of these people wore masks, which they pulled down to be heard. The stenographer was an old woman who was obviously hard of hearing. She kept telling these people over and over to speak up, in this large room with a high ceiling.
I went in trying to have a good attitude. I don't think it's a coincidence I wasn't selected, number 79 Steamy McMurderFace. Posted by: BourbonChicken at March 28, 2022 10:19 AM (44ww/) 213

Years ago I was on a left leaning, but not political board. Someone decided to have fun by taking a map that showed who voted R vs D per state and putting it on top of a fat map. Haha those Republican voters in the southern states are fat! Then someone else broke it down by county and supplied the racial makeup of the counties. And it turns out the fat southerners were mostly in minority districts that voted D. Which was racist apparently to notice, and no longer at all funny. Since covid kills overweight people, and people with lower vitamin D levels, I'm guessing there is the same pattern here with a place like Mississippi. Zillow is pretty good for values of homes that have a lot of comps. Your typical suburban 4/3 house where there are 100 others just like it in your subdivision.
But as soon as you get a bit away from that Zillow is useless. Like my house is 100 years old in a hood of 100 year old houses. Every house is unique. Some have a new roof, some have a 20 year old roof that needs replacing and will cost $30k. Some have $100k of recent renovation some have a kitchen and bathrooms from 1991. Zillow has no clue about any of this and so their value is make believe. Posted by: Joe XiDen - I miss Delta Variant at March 28, 2022 10:29 AM (f9EKv) 254

175, Grump, the primary reason for long 'musket' length barrels was a hangover from black powder rifle barrels to get the maximum performance from them for volley fire and also for distance. Almost all first generation smokeless rifles (aside from carbines for cavalry and support troops), had musket length barrels. Britain with its no 1, mark 3 aka smle and the us 1903 rifle got rid of the carbine model for one std barrel length that was a compromise shorter barrel.

Posted by: G'rump928(c), not an Ace endorsed commenter at March 28, 2022 10:15 AM (yQpMk) True. 16" M1905 bayonets were standard issue at the start of WW2, and the Army started manufacturing lots more. Then the Army learned that the long '05 bayonet created problems with them on the soldiers' belts, when exiting now-universal troop transport vehicles. And another problem if the troops were ordered to fix bayonets while in the new vehicles and landing craft. So...the Army developed the new M1 bayonet with a 10" blade; it became standard issue in 1943. The Army also had commercial companies cut-down the blades of as many old and new '05 bayonets as Ordnance could get its hands on, from 16" to 10". A lot of those were issued before the M1's became available Posted by: Gref at March 28, 2022 10:49 AM (AMIL/) 340

When I saw the video clip of Will Smith/Chris Rock, what I saw was a man who grew balls and went to defend his wife. The Hollywood Elite (and not so elite - Chris Rock) are nothing but narcissistic, self important, shallow individuals who take every opportunity to push their world view on the rest of us, and tearing down everything that is counter to it. They have been pushing the boundaries of not only what is acceptable, but what is unacceptable, profane and obscene because they can. And this ends up in our society and culture.
