As of March 21, all forms of physical punishment against children (such as smacking, hitting, slapping and shaking) is illegal in Wales.

We mostly finished our new construction, and they have these retarded whole house ventilation standards that basically have you running an exhaust fan 24/7, dumping all that heated air you spend hundreds of dollars on out into the outdoors.
You are literally heating the outside, like your parents scolded you against.
Fortunately, there is a bathroom fan controller that you can program to cover the whole house ventilation requirement, which also has a manual mode, and which you can switch to once the inspector approves your installation.

thanks to a test when I gave blood, I recently found out that I got Covid sometime in December or January. I got it, got over it, and never even knew I had it - got all the antibodies now, though. (and no I was NEVER vaxxed) I remember one time when I had a quick fever for two nights and a nagging cough but I took aspirin, mucinex, and Vit D3 and it was over in 72 hours.

Nope. This is about removing dead/moist air and tightening home air leakage construction standards. You see, the more they make homes airtight and energy efficient, the more they have to ensure you use more energy venting your home, and exhausting that heated air. My dad has PTSD from 7 tours of war with zero PTSD or any help available. He was a drinker and a fiend while mom enabled. It was like living with Jack Torrance for 18 years (not the pedo part tho); the Shining was the only movie I was never allowed to watch until colleges The cops were to terrified to intervene. CPS was no where to be found. Mandated reporters like teachers and doctors or any fucking adult stepping up including older siblings to make sure i was in a safe environment... lmao.

In the article, it sounded like the limiter was not at all about failing to pay the bill. It was about drawing too much power. Kinda like a circuit breaker built into the meter.
If it was about paying your bill, why would the customer be able to reset it?

I thought that was the purpose of the main breaker? I remember our 100Amp breaker would trip in the Summer. The pool. A/C, oven and general usage was too much some days. Being the other male, when my Dad was not home, I had to turn off the pool filter, turn up the thermostat, turn off all the lights and TV, and turn off the Oven/Stove Top. Then climb up on the counter to reach the top breaker in the box.

Once on a trip to N.O., (after Katrina) I drove through the 9th ward to see what was left. While I was there, I looked at the huge levee at the end of one of the streets, and saw a very large container ship going by on water that was 20 feet *above* the ground level I was standing on at the time. And that water was at sea level.
The levees need to be cut, and the 9th ward needs to be given back to the gators.

He's also Exhibit One Zillion why the GOP will never be "taken over". Mitch Daniels was as popular as it gets in Indiana. The man couldn't take his show nationally because he was too short, and he re-married his previously divorced wife after she'd, in turn, divorced another man. That kind of shit doesn't play in upper-class Republican Politics.
So - the Indiana GOP served up Mike Pence - who left Indiana because he was well on his way to losing his race for a second term. And they followed that up with Eric Holcomb - who got a second term by default, largely thanks to a Trump Bump the dude never acknowledged but gladly accepted. He still bitched, publicly and constantly, that unruly Hoosiers won't "wear a simple cloth covering" or "take a proven vaccine".
I'd be glad to vote for a Democrat for Indiana Gov - but apparently they don't have any Evan Bayhs anymore.

But with the urban riots of 2000 still in recent memory, I want to be rural, and far from the reaches of any urban-ish environment. And Galveston is in equal parts, urban and antiquated, gentrified, close-urban neighborhoods, which are more dense than "suburban" spreads.
If the shit gets ugly in Galveston, (and it damn well could), it's going to be a very brutal and nasty set of days here. The density is such that a firestorm is a real possibility. Time to go. Time for us to go.

We need to bring back ocean liners. Three to seven days to cross the ocean, in great comfort, with lots of deck to walk, and bars and dining rooms, a swimming pool, and game rooms. Even if you have only a dinky little cabin, all you do there is sleep.

Probably the SS United States. Retired in '69.
Cunard still makes transatlantic trips. They're not really intended as a substitute for an air crossing to Europe, except for people who won't get on a plane. Mostly they just sell the experience to older, well-heeled clientele.

Nah, I'm directly connected to the Cruise Industry, being a ground transportation driver to and from the ship. They cross oceans all the damn time, every season. It's called a "Re-Location Cruise", and you can book passage on 'em. Many Caribbean ships will cross to do summer cruises in the Med., and the reverse in the winter, which is the Caribbean peak season. And the ships that relocate seasonally for Hawaii, Aussie and New Zealand, make crossings to the Asia market for Japan, Thailand, etc.
But they're not Ocean Liners, and they do everything navigationally possible to avoid the worst of weather at sea. The Disney fleet of ships comes the closest to being the classic Ocean Liners of yore. Lower, less windage above the waterline, and a true "arc" from stem through admidships to stern. (the bow & stern are higher than the middle, kind of like a Hobie Cat hull, but with a less pronounced curve)

The closest I ever came to that was spending one night on Okracoke Island at the tail end of North Carolina's Outer Banks. When I went out for a walk at night, the island had little light pollution. When I looked up at the night sky, the stars were so incredibly three-dimensional that I became disoriented and 'fell upward while falling backwards'. ONLY the Queen Mary, Q.E one and two, and the S.S. France and S.S. United States, were the true Greyhounds. United States being the AMAZING, with a forty knot made good passage. Blue Riband, and only a few hyper engined smaller 100 ft. made for one task speedboats, have bettered her time.
Sadly, the speeds attainable by a Nimitz Class carrier or Los Angeles Class Fast Attack boat, don't enter into the records. Because they're faster. By a LOT.

What we now know about making fast military vessels could be out to use to make very fast ocean liners, if there was a will and financing to do so.
How about submarine liners? Built to carry 400 passengers in daycoach-style accomodations; seats flop down to form beds for the overnight segment, like railcars used to do. Lots of "private" bathrooms, a galley with diner seating, and a pub. Nobody gets seasick, because travel is below the wave base.

I'm reading about the Queen Mary 2's propulsion system. Full intergrated electric. She has four huge diesel engines, total 90.1 kHP, plus two gas turbines at 67 kHp.
Those turn generators which power electric motor propulsion "pods". The turbines are not housed inside the belly of the ship down in the engine room, but are on top, under the funnel, in a sound-proof enclosure.
This allowed them to save interior space by not having to route huge air ducts to feed the intakes of those turbines.
She has three desalination plants onboard for fresh water with a total capacity of 500 kgal per day. She also has huge fresh water tanks. If the engines aren't running hot enough, not enough heat can be generated to run the desalinators. They have separate boilers for that, if needed. In many cases, it can be cheaper just to buy fresh water at port.

Except for the U.States had PERFECT underhull form, with propellers ideally suited to the speed and RPM range intended.
The United States was far faster than the Q.E. II, even though being a much older ship. The Q.E. II sported far more efficient machinery spaces, making her far more economical and quieter to run.
Best of both, install the Q.E. II gear into a United States hull. Ship like that WOULD cut into airline bookings, for sure.

I see there have been problems with the propulsion pods on the QM 2. Cunard (part of Carnival, it says) sued Rolls-Royce in US courts over that. They won $24M judgement.
It's a thrust bearing problem, apparently, and the lawsuit alleged RR knew all about the problems and lied about it. Or something.

We mostly docked with nearby tugs standing by. But as an old ship-driver, the pods make an incredible difference.
The entry to New York harbor was timed before the start of union labor at 8 AM We were held pierside by the pods before the tugs and the line handlers showed up.

Or is it that nobody has tried to build a large, sturdy ship with foils, because of a perceived lack of power, or lack of need to build one? Build a big ship, with foils that extend deeper into less-turbulent water, and swells are less of an issue. And if the ship is really fast, taking detours to avoid the worst swells is now practical. And satellite imagery can show you the route to take.

I saw how the Pegasus class boats got around. Foils are a maintenance issue. The entire thing is uneconomical, and the strength needed in the foil uprights for a big ship is beyond the material strength available.
Adding more foils will increase the wetted surface. Prairie /Masker would probably be a better bet.

EM units have always been "metric" either cgs or MKS based, or equivalent. There's never been a "US customary" set of electric units.
Which intrigues me. It would be ft-lbs per unit charge for potential/EMF. We'd need a definition of charge or current in standard units, and I'm thinking about that. There isn't one and never was.

As a small boy in 1954 I can remember sailing from Mombasa, Kenya to Genova, Italy via the Suez Canal, on the Warwick Castle. A lot of fun for a young kid. The sailors put on a show (pirates mainly by the pool) when crossing the Equator. For us no big deal as we had been living just a fraction of a degree north of that line for the last 4 years.

I remember reading something a while back about some new discovery about rogue waves. But I can't remember what the hell it was at all.

The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is indeed fascinating. The son of Jacques Cousteau did one of the initial surveys of her wreck.
There is a theory that the hatches were not properly secured. The US Coast Guard said that. But the NTSB came to different conclusions. The main hatches were overwhelmed by a heavy water load.
So, indeed, the likely cause was the Witch of November did indeed summon the Three Sisters, which took the Edmund Fitzgerald. Catastrophic failure of the hatches caused by giant boarding seas. The Three Sisters.
"At 7PM, a main hatchway gave in, and he said, 'Fellas, it's been good to know ya'".

The wreck was found about 17 miles from Whitefish Bay. So, if they'd have made Whitefish Bay, if they'd put 17 miles more miles behind her. A little more than the 15 of the song.
