Josie Gagne was stumbling in the dark, sobbing while on the phone with an Enmax customer assistant, as she tried to locate the tiny orange button under the utility meter that would restore heat inside. It was the shock that got her. The young single mother with two kids under two returned home one winter day last year to find a note on her door from Enmax. She'd fallen behind on bills; the home was now on a limiter, capping her electricity. The furnace was off and at that point, she had no idea what a limiter even was. "I'm freaking out. The cops involved were white. And the alleged perp is an inner city Yute straightening out his life. Prosecutors in St. Louis, Missouri, declined filing charges against a man who allegedly attempted to carjack a marked police SUV while two officers were inside, according to police. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department sought charges of first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and resisting arrest against a 27-year-old suspect who allegedly tried to carry out the carjacking Saturday. A spokeswoman for the police said Monday that the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s office refused to file charges, the St. Louis Dispatch reported. You know damn well had it been someone of Kyle Rittenhouse's complexion he would be in jail without bail. Hours after exchanging vows, a North Carolina couple exchanged blows at a Florida hotel, according to police who found the bride in a wedding dress covered in blood and the groom with injuries to his face. Police were called early Sunday morning to the Hilton in Naples, where they encountered Stefanie Ginas, 32, in the hotel’s Salon room. Ginas’s wedding dress had “several blood spots down the front, and the left strap of her dress was torn,” according to a Naples Police Department report. Ginas’s “face and chest were covered in blood, and she was crying,” cops noted. Ginas’s mother told officers that the newlywed was involved in “some sort” of altercation with John Gerhard, 43, the man Stefanie had married earlier that evening. Ginas told cops the couple had quarreled about her brother while in their hotel room, and that the dispute turned violent. Ginas suffered a “bloody nose, busted upper lip, and swollen eye during the altercation,” police reported. Gerhard, who said that his wife head-butted him, had a cut on the bridge of his nose, swelling on his face, and dried blood on his pants. Indiana's spineless governor: Doesn't get it. Wales Bans Physical Punishment Against Children, Including Smacking And Slapping
Isn't it strange that in most places the only humans you are legally allowed to hit are children? As of March 21, all forms of physical punishment against children (such as smacking, hitting, slapping and shaking) is illegal in Wales. Corporal punishment (ie, swats) is still allowed in MS schools, but iirc the parents have to pre-grant permission for it to happen. That's now. But back when I was well under 29, ahem. I have experiences, memories, but really they didn't change a single thing about me. That's when my Give-A-Fuck meter broke for the rest of time. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at March 22, 2022 10:31 PM (QCwhW) Nope. This is about removing dead/moist air and tightening home air leakage construction standards. You see, the more they make homes airtight and energy efficient, the more they have to ensure you use more energy venting your home, and exhausting that heated air. I suppose it could have a genesis in mold concerns. In our area, whole house ventilation took the place of things like vent fans in the laundry areas. In the article, it sounded like the limiter was not at all about failing to pay the bill. It was about drawing too much power. Kinda like a circuit breaker built into the meter.
If it was about paying your bill, why would the customer be able to reset it? Once again, the writer is as stupid as the subject of the article. Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at March 22, 2022 10:59 PM (8C7+r) I thought that was the purpose of the main breaker? I remember our 100Amp breaker would trip in the Summer. The pool. Yeah, I know a few songs of that era on guitar. Greensleeves is one, and something imaginatively called Renaissance Lute Piece is another. Not quite as old is the revolutionary war song, The Rifle. (Also: The Riflemen of Bennington) Oh, the rifle! Oh, the rifle! In our hands will prove no trifle! repeat. Then sing about how youre going to slaughter redcoats from behind trees. Had ye no graves at home/Across the briny water, That hither ye must come/Like bullocks to the slaughter? Buried in the Calgary article is the fact that province has already passed a regulation that utility companies can't completely shut off power from Oct 15 to Apr 15. I'm not sure what this literal sob story is trying to push-complete utility bill forgiveness for the poor? The story even conceded that energy prices are skyrocketing, so *everyone's* going to struggle to pay their bill.

Calling for extrajudicial, violent punishments for government officials is counterproductive.
Government officials should be punished with extreme prejudice, in the harshest possible manner, only after perfunctory, pro forma show-trials by troikas of citizens who recently toppled their monstrous edifice of corruption. I figure the proceedings could last maybe 30-45 minutes each, thousands at a time, day in and day out, from sea to shining sea. For due process. Every one of them deserves their day in court. Metallica's version of Whiskey In The Jar, supposedly based on an Irish folk song from the early 1600s -- In the book The Folk Songs of North America, folk music historian Alan Lomax suggests that the song originated in the 17th century, and (based on plot similarities) that John Gay's 1728 The Beggar's Opera was inspired by Gay hearing an Irish ballad-monger singing "Whiskey in the Jar". In regard to the history of the song, Lomax states, "The folk of seventeenth century Britain liked and admired their local highwaymen; and in Ireland (or Scotland) where the gentlemen of the roads robbed English landlords, they were regarded as national patriots. Such feelings inspired this rollicking ballad." Metallica does the tune proper justice. Posted by: GnuBreed at March 23, 2022 12:04 AM (F0YaR) 376

And for those so inclined, the Russian TV serial "Shtrafbat" is pretty good. Believe it's on UToob with subtitles. Probably fairly accurate - men convicted usually of normal crimes, in or out of the army, officered by men who had disobeyed orders or come under suspicion.
Lead actor (commander of the battalion) in the series is also central figure in another series, "Ladoga", about the ice roads to Leningrad. Started it a while back but need to get back to it, it seemed pretty good too. Order 227 ("not a step back") and the blocking detachments are generally misunderstood. The focus was on officers and leadership failures, which turned out was correct - not on the men. The order itself, in context, reads as a stern but justified response to general collapse. I think the electricity limited mom is on maternity leave for the last one she had, not a new one.
Her situation is just reminding me that this is our future for even paid-up bills. Digital meters and delimiters are one way to make you care about the amount of electricity you are killing the planet with, and learn to drink your powered protein ration at room temp. Not sure what to make of the COVID booster ads from our purportedly once, twice,or thrice infected betters. Cynical me thinks it's just a shill to make you pay them to be forced into a fourth ineffective shot. It does make me wonder who all has been together in a room lately. Related to the content - Indiana's current governor, Eric Holcomb, is Exhibit One Zillion why "always better the Republican than the Democrat" is simply horse shit.
He's also Exhibit One Zillion why the GOP will never be "taken over". Mitch Daniels was as popular as it gets in Indiana. The man couldn't take his show nationally because he was too short, and he re-married his previously divorced wife after she'd, in turn, divorced another man. That kind of shit doesn't play in upper-class Republican Politics. So - the Indiana GOP served up Mike Pence - who left Indiana because he was well on his way to losing his race for a second term. And they followed that up with Eric Holcomb - who got a second term by default, largely thanks to a Trump Bump the dude never acknowledged but gladly accepted. He still bitched, publicly and constantly, that unruly Hoosiers won't "wear a simple cloth covering" or "take a proven vaccine". I'd be glad to vote for a Democrat for Indiana Gov - but apparently they don't have any Evan Bayhs anymore. Posted by: Uniparty at March 23, 2022 12:47 AM (+ZJqT) 431

sven.. choose Indianola. I'm lookin' to un-ass Galveston, not because it's not a great place, it IS.
But with the urban riots of 2000 still in recent memory, I want to be rural, and far from the reaches of any urban-ish environment. And Galveston is in equal parts, urban and antiquated, gentrified, close-urban neighborhoods, which are more dense than "suburban" spreads. If the shit gets ugly in Galveston, (and it damn well could), it's going to be a very brutal and nasty set of days here. The density is such that a firestorm is a real possibility. Time to go. Nah, I'm directly connected to the Cruise Industry, being a ground transportation driver to and from the ship. They cross oceans all the damn time, every season. It's called a "Re-Location Cruise", and you can book passage on 'em. Many Caribbean ships will cross to do summer cruises in the Med., and the reverse in the winter, which is the Caribbean peak season. And the ships that relocate seasonally for Hawaii, Aussie and New Zealand, make crossings to the Asia market for Japan, Thailand, etc. But they're not Ocean Liners, and they do everything navigationally possible to avoid the worst of weather at sea. The Disney fleet of ships comes the closest to being the classic Ocean Liners of yore. Lower, less windage above the waterline, and a true "arc" from stem through admidships to stern. (the bow & stern are higher than the middle, kind of like a Hobie Cat hull, but with a less pronounced curve) Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at March 23, 2022 01:18 AM (QzJWU) 486

I'm reading about the Queen Mary 2's propulsion system. Full intergrated electric. She has four huge diesel engines, total 90.1 kHP, plus two gas turbines at 67 kHp. Those turn generators which power electric motor propulsion "pods". The turbines are not housed inside the belly of the ship down in the engine room, but are on top, under the funnel, in a sound-proof enclosure. This allowed them to save interior space by not having to route huge air ducts to feed the intakes of those turbines. She has three desalination plants onboard for fresh water with a total capacity of 500 kgal per day. She also has huge fresh water tanks. If the engines aren't running hot enough, not enough heat can be generated to run the desalinators. They have separate boilers for that, if needed. In many cases, it can be cheaper just to buy fresh water at port. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at March 23, 2022 01:49 AM (Mzdiz) 530

Except for the U.States had PERFECT underhull form, with propellers ideally suited to the speed and RPM range intended. The United States was far faster than the Q.E. I see there have been problems with the propulsion pods on the QM 2. Cunard (part of Carnival, it says) sued Rolls-Royce in US courts over that. They won $24M judgement. It's a thrust bearing problem, apparently, and the lawsuit alleged RR knew all about the problems and lied about it. Or something. We mostly docked with nearby tugs standing by. But as an old ship-driver, the pods make an incredible difference. The entry to New York harbor was timed before the start of union labor at 8 AM We were held pierside by the pods before the tugs and the line handlers showed up. Build a big ship, with foils that extend deeper into less-turbulent water, and swells are less of an issue. And if the ship is really fast, taking detours to avoid the worst swells is now practical. EM units have always been "metric" either cgs or MKS based, or equivalent. There's never been a "US customary" set of electric units. Which intrigues me. It would be ft-lbs per unit charge for potential/EMF. We'd need a definition of charge or current in standard units, and I'm thinking about that. There isn't one and never was. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is indeed fascinating. The son of Jacques Cousteau did one of the initial surveys of her wreck. There is a theory that the hatches were not properly secured. The US Coast Guard said that. But the NTSB came to different conclusions. The main hatches were overwhelmed by a heavy water load. So, indeed, the likely cause was the Witch of November did indeed summon the Three Sisters, which took the Edmund Fitzgerald. Catastrophic failure of the hatches caused by giant boarding seas.
