More pics here.

La Jument is a lighthouse in northwest France. Brittany, more specifically. *

The word "jument" in French means mare.

This surprised me: It's also an English word. One I've never ever seen or heard before. It means either "beast" or "beast of burden."

Has anyone else seen that word before? Seems like a real dictionary deep cut.

Tuck a 17-year-old African pied crow. He can imitate a few words like a parrot.

A raven love story.

Caterpillar has a good defense mechanism -- it can take the form of a poisonous snake when it feels threated. Stay with it a bit, it only does the transformation about 20 seconds in.

A pair of flirtatiously awkward b00bies, moving and swaying with each other on the beach.

A big puffed-up c0ck.

I'm always amused at how similar the games that animals play with each other are the same as human kids play. Including the Phantom Slap.

Hedgehog GAINZZZ.

YOU'RE DIGGING WRONG LET ME SHOW YOU

Dejected dog.

Cat chat.

Cow sliding down a hill.

Steve Inman (Nitter versions of links): If you take a selfie with a goat, that goat is going to show off his goating skills.

Theme park ride operators are just among the most technically skilled, high-intellect workers in the world.

Belief: I enjoy feeling the fear of my life being in danger while I'm actually enjoying a safe theme park ride.

Reality: Wake up, chump. Your life is actually in extreme danger. Everyone who built, maintains, inspects, cleans, oils, and operates this Rickety Death Machine tried to get a job in the Non-Carnival Sector of the economy and failed. And they failed for good reasons.

In addition, the person you're currently trusting your life to is 15-years-old and plainly high and his teeth say he's on more than pot and the only professional credential to his name is a "Female Booty Inspector" badge whose edges are bent because he uses it to pry the caps off screw-top beers.

* Sometimes a language has a word that's so perfect you immediately love it and never forget the word. It just fits the thing it's naming. In this case, the French word for "beacon" or "lighthouse" is phare. Which I think just sounds like a beacon blazing out light.

I think it also means headlights.

Strangely again, it actually is a word in English with the same meaning (beacon/lighthouse) as in French. Which I again did not know.

Making it a perfect word is its derivation from Pharos, which is the Greek island upon which the Lighthouse of Alexandria stood.

I love them!
Did you know they are the keepers of the kelp forest?
They use tools.
They have pockets in which they keep snacks and rocks to bash open shellfish
They hold hands while they sleep so they don't drift away from each other.

Perhaps humans could learn something from that last point. Hold hands more. Don't drift away.

78 We were camped in an airstream on the south jetty in Eureka CA once. I don't know if it was gale force winds, but the wind tore off the skylight. The rain was coming in horizontally so we didn't really get wet. It picked up the ends of the trailer and shook it, but we had it turned the right way to ride it out. We screamed a lot. The dogs were afraid to go outside for two days.

The cops came down and told us we'd better leave. The winter storms cause the water to flood over the road and that section would be cut off from land. We left. And I haven't been that big on hanging out at the ocean since, to be honest.

This photo is one in a series that was taken from a helicopter. There is another one with a smaller wave, probably to the height of the second window level, and the lighthouse keeper is standing in the doorway.

The wave is coming from the other direction so he's mostly protected but he's just standing there not even in foul weather gear.

90 Evening cruel horde.

I guess Fox was, all day long, saying that the Putin rally at the stadium was mandatory, North Korea-style. Is this true, do you think? I think it's bullshit, but for no evidentiary reason, other than I'm pretty sure everything Fox says about Russia lately is bullshit.

Also a bear snuck up on me again while I was taking lightning pics. Small, barely an adult, about 20 feet away when I noticed him. I was sitting on a picnic table on the dock, going through pics on my phone, he was walking toward me. I looked, silently gave him a "WTF?" gesture with my hands, and he turned and ran away. I went in the house. Last summer it happened and I was standing in the yard, the bear was twice as big, and he was five feet away, and I almost fudged my undies. So this time was like, meh. Still, time to go in! . Got five decent lighting bolts, though!

This photo is one in a series that was taken from a helicopter. There is another one with a smaller wave, probably to the height of the second window level, and the lighthouse keeper is standing in the doorway.

The wave is coming from the other direction so he's mostly protected but he's just standing there not even in foul weather gear.

107 I've actually had two different tire blow-out incidents this month while driving 75 miles an hour on the freeway, and I immediately controlled the vehicle to the point that my path didn't deviate. A 13 year old kid isn't going to be able to do that, which is why I'm not blaming the kid at all. The Dad more than likely would have been strong enough to keep the vehicle from crossing the center line into the other vehicle full of people.

Sure the spare popped. If you're driving on a spare, then stay the Hell off the main road and go slower than usual.

So frustrating. 9 families lose a young person to a horrible death because of just stupid, stupid idiocy. And of course the widow of the man lost her husband and child. Fucking stupid.

As a US Navy Supply Officer from 88 to 92, there was nothing I liked more than being out to sea, especially during a storm. And every night after closing up shop in my office I would always stand out on the 03 level and grab a rail and just watch the waves, and the dolphins that would ride the ship's bow wave occasionally. Very peaceful out in the middle of the Pacific. Especially at night.

I miss the sea.

180 If we can accept that certain animals, say dogs, crows, or dolphins, have high intellectual levels, why do we, generally, have an equally difficult time accepting that animals can also have an emotional level on par with humans? My meager experience and understanding of life on this planet leaves me not doubting that our fellow travelers, cast as inferior, do not have the same attachment to life and each other. We humans, I postulate, are arrogant about love. If you accept that God is Love and Love is God, why do not all living beings experience this reality. Just Saying. Free Jussie!

198 "Green Water" on the deck of a Capital Ship means some seriously huge waves across the face of the briny deep.

Lesser seas will result in a lot of frothy, foamy "boundary layer" seawater on deck, usually no more than two to three inches deep. Hardly enough to sweep a sailor off of his feet. Truly HEAVY seas though, well, you may well get a few hundred TONS of water on deck, to a depth sufficient to provide a layer of cohesive water, more than eight inches in depth, which if rushing across deck at (let' say) the speed of the ship's way.. well, that can be plenty to take a sailor down, and the "Green Water" can get a LOT deeper on deck than a mere eight inches.

Green Water on deck means your ship is doing part-time work as a Submarine, a task for which it was not designed nor particularly well suited.

When I was little, the stock show would take place every January, and in addition to the livestock and rodeo, there was a carnival area. I was always peeved that my dad would never, ever let me ride the rides. When I was older, he finally explained why taking apart and putting together rides that had to withstand serious stress, travel and mechanics who probably didn't know what they were doing were not safe. When I saw carnivals overseas, I thought the ones in the US had Disney level oversight.

I always liked Exegesis, legal scholars like to throw it around. It originally meant study of the Bible, in order to find either the original meaning, or hidden meaning. Once we all decided that Government is our God, the word came to be applied to the study of SCOTUS rulings and other Modern Scripture.

LOL, years ago, as part of a drive home from Oregon, I took a detour to Point Reyes cuz that's our last name.
I was seriously underwhelmed.

That same trip, I think there was a lighthouse up by Crescent City. That area was cool. We stopped at a cove by it and collected agates.

264 >>>162 So i Google "mare de mer" to find out what it means, and I get this site as the top item.
Is Ace making up words again?
(I feel bad, like I am always correcting or nitpicking. Really I don't mean to. If you all would prefer, I will shut up.)

It's just a play on words. "Jument" means "mare" (the horse) in French and so I added "de Mer," of the sea. So Mare de Mer, Mare of the Sea.

269 156 Here's a fun fact, one of the most decorated lighthouse keepers in US history and at one time the highest paid lighthouse keeper in the country was a woman, Ida Lewis. She is credited with saving the lives of 18 people and probably a lot more by guiding them safely to harbor.

Until it was taken down the lighthouse was renamed in her honor, the only lighthouse in the country to be named for a person.

The upper class Normans were the ones consuming the meat, so the words for the meat that comes from the animals are Norman. Beef (boeuf). Pork (porc). Mutton (mouton). Again, I'm using French because I don't know Norman. Again, it's similar. Shut up.

Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence. After 42 years of dragging us down to the muck probably time for me to hang it up.
