Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | ONT: Украинское изданиеWell, with the war in Ukraine raging for over a week now, the internet has had plenty of time to meme the heck out of it, so tonight's Friday meme madness will focus on the best (and worst) of these memes. Here's one inspired by our dear leader. Tonight, on Top Gear Ukraine Reddit goes to war Fortnite: Ukraine — ONT WTF (@OntWtf) March 5, 2022 The Tankies get in on the action? They don't want you to know this, but Russian hardware in Ukraine is free. You can take home as much as you like. I have 237 T-90s
And you get a tax break Which is a good thing at these prices How do they fit in those little balls? If I had a nickel for every time I could use this joke, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice Intelligence has found out that the Russian Tor M1 anti-air missile system is powered by twin John Deere tractor motors — ONT WTF (@OntWtf) March 5, 2022 International alliances are in flux International alliances are in flux, part 2 Just to be clear There are lots of these so-called “hero” stories being pushed. None of them are true You too can get in on the hero racket -The Falcon Of Mariupol Help is arriving Not all of it willingly Meanwhile, battles rage on But wait! There's video!
How it started How it's really going Food for thought Housekeeping This was posted on the ONT last night after I went to bed: Mornin', all, I'd always read that Hoover was accused of doing "nothing" about the onset of the Great Depression, not that he tried strong government intervention. Of course the same works always praised FDR for his strong government intervention. I need to read more about Harding and Coolidge. It was too late to answer it when I saw it this morning, but Hoover “doing nothing” is false. It was started by Democrats who wanted Hoover out FDR in (FDR, who did everything Hoover had been doing, turned up to 11), and has become one of the great lies of history. Hoover was all about massive government intervention to “fix” the economy. None of it worked, of course, all it did was turn the Depression of '29 into the Great Depression. If he had truly done nothing, he would have been reelected in a landslide, because the economy would have been booming again. ---- yep, the slurs against Hoover are, of course..and get this...completely false and 180 degrees wrong. Kinda like saying Bush 43 didn't destroy capitalism to save it. Nah dawg, you just let the mortgage thing get out of hand for 8 years. Hoover did some stuff, is all. The only thing FDR did to help the Great Depression end was to die in office. His policies were insane and beyond, probably, what we see with Mooselini and other present day tyrants. Instead of seizing your bitcoins he grabbed your gold. There is an excellent book that puts to the lie "Hapless Hoover" called FDR's Folly.
Hoover had gone legend for his "good work" in prolonging the misery in EUrope particularly Belgium post ww1. Yeah...I saw some "expert" getting all excited that Germany is going to ramp up military spending. There's a reason the Allies divided Germany after WWII. Only an intellectual idiot would think reuniting Germany and then encouraging them to arm up is a good idea. German thought didn't change after WWII, they just realized they had to hide their anti-Semitism.

Every military action in the whole of history depends on logistics. Vlad may be 100% KGB, but even the KGB must have had somebody managing supplies. Didn't want to run out of torture instruments. You know when the handles on a pair of pliers have so much blood on them from pulling fingernails and teeth that they slip out of your hands, you can't pause an interrogation just to make a quick run to the hardware store for another pair.

Watching the West mobilize cancel culture against Russia (an external antagonist), coupled with watching Trudeau mobilize de-banking and the jackboots against his countrymen is unsettling to me.
Putin is a thug. But I really don't care about Ukraine either. But we're watching a dress rehearsal of the methods that will be used soon against the West's *domestic* enemies. De-banking, sanctions, un0-personing. Australian banks are moving to eliminate physical branches. ~80% of Aussies are happy with online banking. Doesn't sit well after watching Trudeau. My reading of history has kinetic wars getting more kinetic when there is a single minded megalomaniac out to make an empire that will persist for centuries (think Napolean). My reading of history also informs me that kinetic wars get more kinetic when the ladies start demanding the men do something and as an incitement start hiking their skirts (Miss Lindsey Graham comes to mind here as head cheerleader). My reading of history has me thinking we are already well into WWIII, bastard version that it is so far. This SOB situation is one fatal event away from going kinetic on a global scale. I have never been this concerned about international events like this one.

I usually don't have time to read ONT comments, including tonight, but I want to add a statement (but not really sure if I am right.) What I thought, (and I have to double check -maybe later) that the dems criticized Hoovers actions for doing something while he was in office, then FDR ramped them up and they criticized him for having not done enough. See how that works? He gets blamed both ways. The latter narrative grew only later when the economy finally did turn around. Not while it was staggering under FDR "continuous experimentation." They do this a lot - Clinton criticized Bush for engaging with China and allowing temp MFN, then Clinton made it permanent. There are a lot of examples if you think about it. Another is Obama criticizing Bush for bombing in middle east, then doing 10x more. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at March 04, 2022 10:58 PM (M2hhc) 194

Cicero, back in the late 80s - ? - there was a touring exhibition of a dozen or so of the Faberge eggs. Truly amazing.
Even more amazing - spent quite a bit of time in Leningrad, never got to see any of the eggs there (think they were on display at times). Of course the Hermitage is enormous, one can pop in for an hour at a time to see something different for a few years, probably. Amber Room was the thing that stands out most in memory. And the square nearby, where some famous 1905 incidents took place. Posted by: rhomboid at March 04, 2022 11:29 PM (OTzUX) 284
Hoover was a mining engineer, and was the "senior civilian" at one of the besieged cities during the Boxer Rebellion. His wife, Lou, used to tour the walls with her lever action 32-20.
They also translated Agricola's De Re Metallica (on mining) which I had a chance to buy TWICE at a used book store and never picked up because I wanted something else. His role during WWI was getting supplies to civilians in Belgium who were trapped by the Germans. He should probably never have been president, but he wasn't a bad man, just the wrong man too eager to take up power to fix things. Posted by: Kindltot at March 04, 2022 11:29 PM (xhaym) 285

What I think is a pretty much unknown story is Hoover's participation in late WWII war planning studies, informally, though he worked with serving military. The key one was a part of the material that supported Truman's already sensible instinct that casualties were going to be horrendous in the final phase in the Pacific. Of course they already were - the casualty "exchange rate" rose dramatically from Iwo to Saipan to Okinawa. This had already rightly become a huge concern for whole leadership apart from Hoover's paper and others.

For this pittance I get a box that has regulated DC, the fancy batteries that have a 2000 recharge to 80%, higher output USB A and C ports, a couple of 110V outputs, and full pass through. The only downside is the max 65 watt solar recharge. But I don't care because car has the DC jack and 110v outlets built in. Perfect for bugging and watching Mad Max movies out in the desert after Putin sets Miss Lindsey Graham's skirts on fire after a cruise missile strike. Water may be a problem in that event.

The single most effective way to screwing Putin, lowering consumer energy costs and putting a check on inflation is to unleash America's energy companies by reopening access to the oil fields. This obvious solution won't happen because we have a government that is enthralled by the idea of solar and wind utopia rapture that will not end until their children decide to execute them.

All my grandparents had died, both my parents had died, and now my aunt. I was the oldest of the six cousins by at least six years. A lot happened in those six years. (My family put the fun in disfunctional.) There's no one left who remembers what happened family wise for those six plus years.

Bellingcat investigator Christo Grozev says that #Russia has resources left for the war until Sunday, after which they will collapse. And then Putin surrenders, right?
I hope someone actually is keeping track of this. I do believe that logistics in projecting force outside their borders is proving to be a challenge that Russia sort of knew would be a problem, but didn't really anticipate would be as big a problem as it has become. Perversely, the bigger the supported force in combat and the further the force is from base, the bigger the logistical tail has to be. And the tail itself, as it gets bigger, has to devote more resources to supporting itself before it can support the trigger pullers. Add in a moderate rate of consumption of ammunition and the need for spare parts and the problem becomes even more complex. And then the logistical tail needs protection itself, as well as military police and all the other bells and whistles. I don't know about Sunday, but I do believe the challenges are increasing at a rapid rate. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at March 05, 2022 12:17 AM (BMmaB) 379

Posted by: Sharkman at March 05, 2022 12:15 AM (8gxrg) Georg Bauer was a physician who practiced in Bohemia during the big sliver mining boom during the 15th Century. Since he was practicing on the miners, he did a lot of study on both the miners and how silver was mined and wrote it up in Latin. He latinized his name to Agricola because Bauer meant Farmer. The whole work was called De Re Metallica, and discussed everything from dowsing for metal and water, to starting a mine, extracting ore, dangers of mining, malicious imps (we call them Tommyknockers) risks of fires, and sluicing water for mining. Herbert Hoover was a mining engineer, and he and his wife Lou wrote up a translation of it when they were between jobs after getting caught up in the Boxer Rebellion. As one does. Caesar while I don't of course know the vital details I suspect it's more a case of organization than logistical challenge per se - we're not talking big distances, or even very large forces (or even much of an ammo consumption rate, for that matter).
We may never know or not know for a long time the true story, but some puzzling things are the apparent failure to work as BTGs, even though that's how they're organized and trained, and what appears* to be a lot of abandoned equipment. * many caveats on this - "data" is just imagery sent in, usually no details or context, very often vehicles are recoverable and recovered - so it's an interesting thing that may not be a thing at all, just impossible to know now Posted by: rhomboid at March 05, 2022 12:25 AM (OTzUX) 394

Seriously, Lt. Bearclaw really ought to go back to the homeland so that his countrymen can benefit from his vast military expertise. Maybe he's worried that he'll get lost in the shuffle of all those ground troops. What he should do is acquire a 1940s-era doorman's uniform and peddle himself as a Bolivian admiral; that ought to help him snag a position ashore, maybe supervising the offloading of emergency donuts from supply ships.

The Mississippi floods of 1926-27 were the biggest ever, inundating (and staying around on) about a third of Mississippi, and quite a bit of several other states. The government evacuated an estimated 50,000 homesteads and families. Black sharecroppers were held in tent cities; they became a sort of hot potato, since they were extremely rural and no city wanted them, and there was no way to resettle them where they had been. Bad things happened -- a crime wave, a VD epidemic -- and eventually they just sort of leaked out to urban areas. Commerce Secretary Hoover was put in charge, and although he organized a lot of good, also got all the blame. The term "Hooverville," later applied to hobo camps and makeshift encampments of the depression-stricken, was coined while the camps raged.

--- The Marxist-Fascist insurrection that is in control of the US government is exactly for this type of ultimate outcome. Their solar and wind energy push is predicated on fossil fuel costs being raised 3X to 4X times which then makes the so called "green energy" becoming, for the first time, financially viable without subsidies. The current Russian matter does exactly that as noted recently by Mayor Buttplug when he noted that the Federal government shouldn't engage in a short term problem (fossil fuels) to a long term solution (lunatic green energy). This will raise energy costs that make "Green Energy" cost efficient for the first time. Never forget, the radical left is out to collapse the economy as we know it and replace it with a solution that leads us back to 14th century quality of life. Everybody forget the last 2 times some bright sort thought it a fine idea to let them concoct a lethal military? Posted by: irongrampa at March 05, 2022 12:49 AM (KATBx) they had a lethal military in the 70s - 90s when they decided to integrate all the East Germans and then start the massive welfare state, and then rely on the East Germans to fill the ranks, and then the East Germans not only got old and retired, but found out that most of their military veterans' benefits got redirected to social projects. Now they are doing diversity-crime purges among the ranks and the German military doesn't do much. I have been told the last thing the German military has done was during the Covid riots, they told Merkel they were busy and maybe she should talk to the police. Maybe not time to "panic" per-se, but it's damn sure time to buy all the ammo, canned food, such silver n' gold as can be bought. This is all insane. Like one of those dreams you wake up from and wonder how did you come up with that?
Everyone is losing their mind and considering WW3 cause Putin wants to change the government in Ukraine. You know, Ukraine, that place that has been independent for about 30 years in recorded history. And the government he wants to change took over from the last government in 2014 and is headed by an actor\comedian. Meanwhile the price of oil is going through the roof even though nothing has changed with supply, except the US isn't pumping as much as they did under Trump. But its out of the question that the US pumps more because we have to focus on alternative energy that doesn't exist yet, even if it ever actually can. Nearly all the evidence points to the vax doing nothing good and more likely causing harm, mandates are being dropped right and left..but they still advertise how you should get it. The current political leadership has polls released showing how their ideas are becoming about as popular as smelly drunken people at church but they double down on them. It's all insane. Hah, I guess the "you look like a monkey" thing is pretty universal (how did this stuff get around pre-Internet?)
Although the variation in our corner of the globe was: You look like a monkey And you act like one too It still kind of cracks me up, 29 years later. All those high notes, raining lovable derision on the target. Posted by: spindrift at March 05, 2022 01:25 AM (GZJOH) 474
I'm settling in for a long night. got the dreaded 40 minutes of sleep. The phone buzzes and wide awake. ugh. I could do something productive but this and cold cider are probably a better use of time.

Doin good, USN.
Parents just celebrated 56 years of wedded bliss, which I find miraculous in itself, especially since I used to pray as a kid that they'd divorce. When my mom chased my dad into a bathroom, and I had to call the MPs on them when I was 13, that's when I kinda realized that maybe they will truly kill each other, and maybe a divorce would be such a bad idea. Anyhow. I'm Trying to work up going back to mass after 2 years. My parish has been pretty crapy. I'm ambivalent about the church as a whole. I miss the Eucharist.

SMH, you amaze me. Keeping the faith and moving ahead. It's easier said than done.
USNTakim hopefully your faith in the spirit remains strong. There have been a lot of organizations that have inspired ambivalence in the last few years. Sometimes we need to remember the inspiration for an organization as we ponder how did it end up the mess it became. Back. I went down a rabbit hole messing with a friend's Savage model 187 .22 semi-auto rifle. Came to me with no firing pin in it, and a small baggie labeled "wrong firing pin", which it did indeed prove to be, as installing it, and cocking and firing on an emptied .22 LR case left not so much as the tiniest little divot. Seems the back end of the wrong firing pin lacks a projection for the bolt to smack against.
And there are a bunch of bodged screws, too. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 05, 2022 02:50 AM (P3gRi) 501

Hoover did something he had the military clear out homeless veterans camping out in washington d.c. You milton freidman imbeciles It is hard to do nothing when large numbers of people are raiding food wharehouses and setting up road block to bring capitalists enemies of the people to justice led by communists who were setting up general strikes in cities (read social history of the machine gun) In 1932 the communist party got over a million votes for president. That would be like 20 million votes today.

Raimondo, go read Robert Conquest's book "Harvest of Sorrow", which is about your sainted communists' murder by starvation of almost 5 million Ukrainians in a single year.
Communism murdered 200 million people for nothing. For envy. Communism destroyed Russia, Eastern Europe and China. Capitalism is the only system that has allowed human progress, which you would know if you had two brain cells to rub together. Gah! Posted by: Sharkman at March 05, 2022 04:05 AM (8gxrg) 516
