Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread where this past week we celebrated our 6th anniversary. Thank you all for making this thread possible. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Friendly Pet Mode for new Ford vehicles. Nice.

These days cars are built with all sorts of comforts, and auto manufacturers are looking for ways to extend those to our furry family members. In 2019, Tesla released “Dog Mode,” making it safe for owners to leave pets in their vehicles for a short period. Now, Ford’s patented “Pet Mode” looks to offer something similar, if not even better.

Tesla owners can activate Dog Mode for those unaware, which keeps the car’s HVAC running while the vehicle is parked. The main idea is to keep pets warm in the winter or cool in the summer. Along with maintaining a set cabin temperature, Tesla’s Dog Mode displays a message on the center infotainment screen with the internal temp and a message, so anyone passing by knows the animal is comfortable and safe. Owners can engage Dog Mode on the touchscreen.

Not many animal stories available this week. Originally this was going into tonight's ONT. Bicycling and cattle do not mix.

During a bike race in rural California this weekend, several cyclists were trampled after attempting to ride past an aggressive bull that was blocking their path.

The bull reportedly attacked four cyclists during the Rock Cobbler gravel race, an extremely challenging off-road bike race. The daunting 80-mile race includes several major surface changes along the route, as well as an elevation gain of about 6,500 feet.

In the description of the event, it’s described as ‘a stupidly hard thrill ride bordering on a race. It was conceived by madmen.’

There is also an abundance of wild animals along the daunting 80-mile trek.

This Man Designed A Purrfect House For His 20-Plus Rescue Cats

Probably most cat owners have dreamed of building their cat a little home at some point, but not like this! Peter, the founder of the ZenByCat organization, and the builder of this wonderful cat paradise that we’re about to show you, slowly but surely executed his life’s dream: living in harmony surrounded by the cuddly and perfectly happy rescued fluffballs.

Just how many cats, you might ask? Over twenty. But it’s alright, Peter’s house is built for it. Literally. So scroll right down and check out the catopia, the Shangri-La of cat homes, except this one exists for real.

Meet The PetMorons

robert-02-11-22.jpg

Hi MisHum--

I know this is too late for this week's Pet Thread, but I wanted to send a picture of Robert anyway.

I adopted him Friday evening, on the 4th, and he's settling in nicely. He's the strangest cat I've ever lived with (one does not "own" cats). He rarely says anything other than some purring, and I've never seen him yawn.

He spends most of the daylight hours sleeping under the bed, coming out around 6 or so to wander around and rub against everything. At bedtime, he jumps up next to me and is rather insistent about petting.

He's two years old, pretty large (long and heavy--13 pounds--but not fat) and despite his handsomeness, he's not at all conceited.

BeckoningChasm

PS: I always enjoy the Pet Thread, and I am honored both that my cat Leela was the very first entry, and that I am at last able to contribute again.

BeckoningChasm thanks for sharing a photo of Robert with us. We have heard quite a bit about him. It sounds like he is rounding you up instead of the other way around. Congrats on your new addition.

Cheney.jpg

Longtime lurker here. Always wanted to send a pic of my sweet Cheney (named after Dick and not that venomous daughter of his) but never got around to it. She’s a lab mix, possibly with greyhound. To say she was the sweetest and smartest would not do her justice. In a couple of hours she will be heading to that farm in upstate New York. She made it 2 days passed her 17th birthday but her hips finally had the last word. The trade-off of receiving her unrelenting love and joy for all those years versus the indescribable pain of what is about to come is/was worth it. Still sucks though…… - Sam

Hi Sam, I'm so sorry to hear about Cheney's passing. It's so tough to do that final act of love. Been there and done that. Sounds like he had a wonderful life with you.

Our cats Bert, Judy and Daisy have been blessed with being selected for the honor of being in the Ace of Spades pet thread a few times. We have a new addition, well sort of…Juliette. Juliette is my daughter’s cat, given to her as a Christmas present by her boyfriend who owns Romeo, too. Our daughter works long and busy hours and we have taken the kitten under our wings. At first mostly because she was a kitten and we didn’t want her spending long hours alone, but now mostly because kittens are so darn cute and fun to watch. Our two cats, Judy and Daisy also needed to be reminded of their own youth, so we often bring Juliette to our house. When their two humans (not their “grandhumans”can find time to be together, Romeo and Juliette have a great time with each other. My daughter sent us a picture of the two of them curled up in the sink as only Romeo and Juliette should, and we thought we would share this with you and our other pet thread friends at the Ace of Spades.

Mostly a lurker, the Shakarone and Bionicback

My first two thoughts, what an awesome photo and how dang cute!! Thanks for sharing this fun story with us today. Sounds like everyone is in good hands.

After seeing Jack and Ugly Joe pictured in last week's awesome pet thread I thought I'd send along our feline version. Here's Puck completely balanced atop her favorite warm pillow--a very compliant Robinson. Thanks so much for keeping the pet thread going strong. - Lila

That is quite the pose, "You caught me!" Great photo and cute to boot. Guess we know who has who wrapped around certain paws. Thanks for sharing today.

Finnegan is a two-year old Silken Windhound. The breed is relatively new (about 30 years old) and dogs are registered through the UKC. Finnegan was born to run. As a sighthound, there’s nothing he enjoys more than chasing that white garbage bag pulled by a cord (substituting for a bunny). Finn has been clocked at 35 mph and competes in three racing sports, including straight sprint, oval track and field lure coursing. Being a hound, he’s abit aloof, but you’ll never find a sweeter disposition. He’s a great traveler and has logged 20,000 miles with us over the past year in our RV. - Thomas

Screw you Limu Emu. Finnegan is faster and much cuter. It sounds like quite the hobby you have going there Thomas. My guess is Finnegan is quite happy to go on road trips. We appreciate your story today.

This Cob appreciates your kind words. All of you folks make it possible for us to keep pushing and come up with the Pet Thread. Thanks for the past 6 years. Hopefully we have many more to come.

25 Lovely pet morons, condolences on Cheney.

I looked at a website to leave a comment for a friend's father's obituary, and noticed that the families of a few older people used photos of their father or mother with a well-beloved pet. Usually this person was a widow or widower and the doggo sat on the lap or next to the person, almost like a life companion.

It made me very sad. My husband is quite a bit older than me, and I could see myself pictured as an old lady with her terrier companion.

One of the pics was of a 91 year old man and a heavily groomed, rabbit eared schnauzer. He held it so lovingly.

33 BeckoningChasm, congratulations! You've entered into the growing group of American Bombay owners! Warning: Robert is going to get EVEN BIGGER. (Hexadecimal is at 20 lbs.) We converted a large dog kennel into a litterbox for Hex this past year to deal with his arthritis, and he seems pretty happy with it.

Bombays are often described as "a dog in a cat's body," so be prepared for one to greet guests, follow you around constantly, guard children, and drink out of the toilet.

40 We had a scare with kid2's dog this week. Out of nowhere he became weak and sluggish. The neutrophils were startlingly low. Seems he was rapidly overcome by an infection, possibly tickborne and he was started on doxycycline, pending serology results. It seems to have worked, but it was shocking to have a 2yo dog decline overnight. Stupid damn deer, hate them.

Marie-Antoinette the black queen certainly was, though she was quite pleased to share her world with her humans. Wolf the recently-passed big black, I don't know if he was. All cats think highly of their own looks, or at least take their beauty for granted, so his self-confidence was nothing out of the ordinary. He was also bigger than the usual cat, so he had the confidence of a cat who had won some fights or clashes during his outdoor days.

I don't know if Penny (my black cat) is conceited, but there's no question who is in charge around here. She is the Queen of the Castle, lording her status over the other cats and myself.

88 And Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is still with us. I was certain at this time last week that he was on a greased slide to the Bridge. He pointedly withdrew from whatever room I was in, seemed to be eating less, etc. This morning, though, he twice crept over near the couch so I could pet him instead of fleeing to the bedroom. And he gave us a little struggle (bothersome but a good sign) when we administered his appetite stimulant by mouth at noon. He's not a 5-year-old again, not even a 10-year-old. But he clings to life.

Wolf was already too big when I adopted him at 1.5 years to curl up in a bathroom sink. But he would leap up and stand with front paws in the sink in the morning and look at me, and I'd run the water so he could drink.

Wolf's other routine was when I was brushing my teeth, to sit on the bathroom counter so I could pet him. If I didn't do it long enough, he would reach out a big gentle paw and pat at my arm ("Don't stop petting!").

116 My cats have always slept at my feet. In the middle of the night I feel their little paws on me.
One years ago night I felt the paws on me, and I awoke trying to find the cat, then I remembered the cat passed the day before. I had no cat at that time.
I've had the same experience with the sensation of a dog licking my hand in the middle of the night. I awaken to realize, my dog had passed months ago.

117 Afternoon horde! Puddy tats galore!

Wow, Silken Windhound? Even the name is cool, looks like a gorgeous breed. Hope the AKC comes around to recognizing it. Cheney made it to 17?!? Congrats! That's awesome, especially for a larger pooch. Yeah, I had a case of the sadz earlier today thinking of past pooches. I'm already aging my puppy and she's not even housebroke yet!

Speaking of which, I'm trying to leash train my pup. You'd think I tied her with barbed wire. She's a serious handful, tiny and stubborn. The gardeners unfortunately removed a dying plant - a decorative sage part of a giant hedge next to the house. Hummers love it. And, just as the pup discovered digging, the gardeners create a big, soft, wet spot right next to the house. Covering it with bark gave her bark to eat. Covering the bark with black and then chili pepper flavored it.

Puppies. Muddy, bark eating chili loving puppies.

If I hadn't once lived in a full-on haunted house, I'd call BS. In a non-haunted house (think I've told this here) we had a friend of ex house-sit from out of town when we were on vacay, and she was happy to have a place to stay. My little Dolly had passed some months before, and her sister Daisy was 100 miles north with sitters we'd trade off with. She'd never seen the dogs AFAIK. At one point when checking up - she said she thought she had seen a small white and brown dog in the garage and running up the stairs and was creeped out. I figured Dolly didn't like house guests if we weren't there.
