Children Are Facing Learning and Speech Delays Due to Being Masked for Two Years

"Kids are resilient!"

The only harms we have to worry about are those suffered by the adult teachers!

Speaking to Fox News Digital from her home in New Jersey, a mom of a 3-year-old boy who has developmental speech delays said of the mask mandates that still exist in her state as of now, "For speech therapy for a toddler, masking isn't exactly what you should be doing, at least in my opinion. It's against what you're trying to accomplish."

She said, "It's like if a dentist required the patient to wear a mask, right? I think for speech therapy for a child, it's the same thing."

I personally realized the importance of seeing someone's mouth in communication as I got a bit older. I lost my ability to hear the verbal range of sound whenever I got into a bar-type setting -- my middle range of hearing just dropped out. The only time I can even halfway understand someone is if I'm looking right at their mouth, using lip-reading to fill in the gaps of what little I can hear of their voice.

Obviously, blocking children from being able to see people's lips move through their most crucial language learning years is going to have an impact, both on their ability to understand speech, and their ability to produce speech. We learn by imitation, after all.

...

The mom in New Jersey described a troubling scenario she and her family faced recently -- one that still gets her upset and angry.

She said her young son, whose speech is delayed, was receiving regular speech instruction from a therapy practice. His therapy started, coincidentally, around the beginning of the COVID pandemic. At that time, he was not wearing a mask.

But then, because of state mask mandates as well as continuing concerns about COVID transmission and infection in early 2022 -- and once a therapist in the practice became pregnant -- the mom was told by email that her little boy, out of an abundance of caution, would have to start wearing a mask during his sessions.

"All patients, they told me, had to begin wearing masks in order to receive treatment," the mom said.

Though the mom protested -- how could a three-year-old child be masked during speech therapy? -- she got nowhere, even after she escalated her concerns to the owner of the therapy services firm.

Again she was told that her son could no longer receive therapy at that location unless he was masked. She was told, "If you don't put a mask on him, we can't provide services anymore."

So "they kicked us out" of that therapist's location, the mom said. She was shocked.

...

She noted that her young son, like so many other kids, doesn't wear the mask properly all the time. "It slips off his nose. He's a little kid. It happens. So how much protection was the mask really providing anyway?"

Nobody wears the mask right. Ben Shapiro was on Megyn Kelly and said that his wife, who's a doctor, said that you need training to wear a surgical mask properly, and if you're wearing it properly, it's uncomfortable, because it's so tight on your face as to not have gaps which allow air to escape through.

Literally no one wears masks like that. These are cilices -- religious garments like hairshirts designed to be uncomfortable or painful to "chastise the flesh" to punish the wearer for sin and purify him -- for godless Karens who crave some kind of religious structure and stricture.

Karen has a very barren and empty life and fills it with making up rules to impose on other people. Especially children, whom she hates.

Daniel Horowitz recently wrote of hearing from his sister, a speech therapist, that she and her colleagues are seeing speech pathologies like they've never seen before.

Daniel Horowitz
@RMConservative

My sister who is a speech therapist in MD just texted me: "The speech issues I see with three and four year olds that have been masked I've never seen before in 22 years. So much low muscle tone, drooling, unusual articulation errors on early developing sounds..."

More from my speech therapist sister: "This kid's whole mouth area was chapped from the drool accumulated around the mask. She can't achieve lip closure for the B M and P sounds because her lips are so chapped."

"Even if the kids were not masked, all of the adults are masked, and the children can't see the oral motor movements made by the adults. They don't know that to produce a B sound the lips have to come together.

"One child today didn't realize that you have to put your tongue behind your teeth to produce a T sound. This is a typically developing child in all other areas.

"These types of articulation errors are usually seen with children who have neurological impairments or syndromes with associated speech and language impairments. I've never had so many referrals in my life for young healthy children with such severe articulation impairments."

Boy you'd think with all those "Education Degrees," we'd have a lot of expertise in child education floating around the system, huh?

But apparently -- no. Not so much.

I'm starting to think the education degree is worthless as a credential, and its chief function is as a barrier to entry into profession that helps those within the profession set above-market prices for their labor.

Remember, "children are resilient." That's what the teachers' unions said as they piled one impediment after another on to children.

Children are resilient. They'll just snap back.

But they're not snapping back.

Will teachers be paying back any money they took under false pretenses, or nah?

Nearly two years into a pandemic that hobbled learning for millions of children, teachers are losing faith that they can lift their students to grade-level work by the end of this school year.

"I can help them make great strides, but I'm not going to be able to catch them all up by the end of this year," said Rachel Bolas, who teaches 6th grade English/language arts and humanities at Limitless Learning Academy, a K-8 school in Escondido, Calif., that is designed to operate in hybrid mode. Some of her students are three to four grade levels behind, she said.

"It's like saying to someone who's less than fit, 'Come to the Olympics. Can you be ready in two months?' You need time," Bolas said. "We need to look at this in the longer term, as work we'll need to do over the next several years."

Hannah Bouchard, a 2nd grade teacher at Platte Valley Elementary in Kersey, Colo., said barely half of her students are reading on grade level now. Before the pandemic, that figure would have been closer to 75 percent at this time of the school year. Recent interim test results showed lackluster progress among her students, too, she said. And even though her administration is reassuring teachers to just do the best they can, she's plagued by feelings of failure.

"It's heartbreaking. The pressure is overwhelming," Bouchard said. "I feel like a horrible teacher. I've been teaching 22 years, and this might be the lowest self-esteem I've had."

Bouchard and Bolas are hardly alone. In a national survey of 630 teachers in December, the EdWeek Research Center found that 7 in 10 are less confident now than before the pandemic that they'll be able to help their students reach grade level by the end of the year.

In Loudoun, Virginia -- again -- this fine specimen says that children are resilient and can handle all the impediments and cruelties the school boards and teachers throw at them.

And if the children can't handle it -- well then, they're just pansies.

And that's not me exaggerating.

That's her word.

pansiechildren.jpg

And she identifies as "President, Friends of Loudoun Mental Health."

Oh, yeah, she's an expert in mental health, all right. Caveat: A lot of people gain an expertise in mental health... from the inside, if you know what I mean.

And of course she looks as you'd expect.

I think we should all take a solemn vow to each other to vote in our school board elections and fucking RAMPAGE through them like fucking barbarians searching for women and steel. I mean, we need to go THULSA DOOM on these motherfuckers. We need to make grown women cry.

Yup. And even if you wear it right and it's properly fitted, you then need all of the ancillary good behaviors - like not touching it, like changing it out frequently, like washing hands before and after application, safe disposal, etc. - for there to even be a possible effect.

It is now 20 years of job security for everyone in the "early speech" business...and early childhood development...and all those other fields that were using ADHD and autism indicators as their "crutches" to get constant early intervention work...

Kids learn staggering amounts by watching. Seeing a faceless person is much less helpful than seeing a full, normal person. Vast tracts of nonverbal communication are not going to be learned by the little kids coming up in this. Even if they don't have articulation problems, they're not learning the tremendous number of non-verbal cues.

67 Kids *are* resilient, but their resilience is largely physical. Kids are made of rubber and shrug off injuries. It's how we make it to adulthood. Little kids who know little or nothing have had entire methods of education stripped away by this. They don't see faces and thus can't emulate it. They hear muffled sounds and so don't know what those sounds are *supposed* to sound like. That's a matter of "resilience" that's a matter of closing off entire avenues of learning.

70 When my children were young and we homeschooled there was no doubt in anyone's mind about early child development and what little kids needed. No one disputed that little kids need interaction and socialization and needed to learn social skills. No one doubted *at all* that babies need foundationally to see faces making funny expressions right down in their little baby faces. That babies recognize faces first before all else and were fascinated by faces was not disputed by anyone. Faces, smiles, expressions, mouths, all contributing to emotional development. Babies and children deprived of these things, we KNEW, never recover completely. Examples from Romanian orphanages were discussed often. Failures to form attachments, all of it.

Now, those may be extreme cases with extreme neglect, but the point is that KIDS DON'T RECOVER from those things. So your kid only got a mild dose of it? Well, I guess that's good then?

Uff da.

Ben Shapiro was on Megyn Kelly and said that his wife, who's a doctor, said that you need training to wear a surgical mask properly, and if you're wearing it properly, it's uncomfortable, because it's so tight on your face as to not have gaps which allow air to escape through.

Remember those mask tests where they ASSUMED water droplets that were x size were the ones that carried the virus and then went on to test the water droplet penetration of that size through various types of masks.

I'd love to see their test rig for that. I'd be willing to bet a paycheck they had some sort of atomizer with a nozzle with the mask under test affixed to the nozzle in a way the droplets couldn't go around the mask. Example: put the mask over the nozzle opening, fold back the mask, then rubber band the rest tightly to the side of the nozzle.

Obviously, this has two major issues. First, nobody's mask sits on their face that tightly. Second, they're ASSUMING droplets of a certain size are needed. Has THAT been rigorously tested?

149 63 Why is Loudoun so messed up?
Is it built over a hellmouth?
___________

I lived there for several years when I first started working, back in the 80's. It used to be mainly farmland on gently-rolling hills. There were a few residential subdivisions there at the time, but nothing like now. Like much of the rest of northern Va., Loudoun was ruined by the massive influx of government-grifters and illegal aliens, and the sleazy developers who built cheap apartment complexes and strip-malls to service them.

The thing is 4 solid pages long. It asks things like "How long have you lived at your present address?" (My answer: "314 years"), "How long each day will the cat be left alone?" ("86,399 seconds a day") and "Where will the cat stay when it is left alone?" ("A suite at the Ritz.")

Too tired to look it up but all of this originated based on tuberculosis studies in the 40's and 50's. One of the Bush administration's apparatchiks had a daughter that unearthed this old research and presented it in a science fair. This was news to all the credentialed idiots in that administration gameplanning SARS return and became govt policy.

Mainly, the summary is that you want sufficient power to exclude virii, you go to space suit type powered respirators and something like NBC chem suits. N95's can protect somewhat but can cause permanent health damage to some and require a strict fitting and handling regimen along with one time use. Also a time limit on wearing them. Surgical masks are mainly to prevent large globules of snot or saliva spews into open wounds.

220 I said from jump street that the mask thing was a paranoid overreaction by neurotics. It was, but it quickly metastized into something far more sinister; a way to socially bully and control people and make the heretics miserable.

the mask wearing also kept the fear/panic/pandemic alive. when you saw people walking around with those things on their faces, you got a constant reminder of the Dark Days we were in.

if people weren't wearing those germ-ridden, useless tokens on their faces, we all might have forgotten to be afraid 24/7

ALSO - Mark Changizi is on substack and he's interesting. he says it has to do with "generalizing" the influence and popularity of the Fear/Pandemic side. his theory is too long to type for me right now tho

But you were good parents. When I was homeschooled I was isolated the overwhelming majority of the time, stuck with my psycho mother. So if you're a shit parent, don't homeschool. However if you're a shit parent you won't have enough time insight to realize how bad you are for your kid.

It's like they don't want people to take unwanted animals. Thankfully, the county pound here doesn't have any of that crap. It was really straightforward when I got my new cat:
1. Select cat
2. Sign paperwork that acknowledges that it will cost you $500 if you bring it back and that you agree to take the cat to the vet within the first month.
3. Pay $50
4. Walk out with cat

In Russia, cat walks YOU!
I've had a slew of cats over the years.
Two came from my ex-wife's friend, who just had a houseful of rescues (her house smelled fine, because she was very cleanly)
Got another weird cat that was a stray. Lived 18 years with me.
My fav cat was an abandoned kitten at work. A few days old, nursed it for weeks with a bottle. Lived 13 years.
Brought home a stray kitten that wandered up to a relative's door at Christmas.
Present cats are a re-homed tom cat that someone else didn't want (smartest cat I have ever owned) and a goofy little female cat that was a kitten left at my son's house.

That's awful. Sorry you and the kid had to go through that.

I remember feeling such disgust for OJ Simpson when he murdered his wife and the Goldman kid, because (among other outrages) Simpson knew his two little kids were asleep in the ex-wife's house, and would be the ones to wake and find that bloody, grisly murder scene, with their nearly-decapitated mother's body, just outside their door.

It was just happenstance (or divine intervention?) that spared the kids from that horror. A neighbor walking their dog late at night found the bodies, but of course that was just luck and Simpson could not have foreseen it happening that way.

297 How does that work exactly? Grade levels come with expected ages and performance levels, if kids in general could work 2 years beyond their grade level (equivalent to catching up from a 2 year delay), wouldn't the standards just change?
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at February 11, 2022 03:39 PM

We can't really change the standards, but we can focus on lower-end skills rather than the higher-end skills. (In world languages, this means Novice-Mid might be the goal instead of Novice-High at the end of a class.)

I can tell you how it worked for the first-after-lockdown middleschool classes. I asked my elementary colleagues for information about what their end-of-year performances were like. One in particular shared materials and ideas to carry over into 7th grade lessons.

During the school year that followed, I met with my 8th-grade colleague and aligned my goals with her wishlist of skills. At the end of the year, I gave her information about the standards my students met and what skills needed work.

This year, our district hired a teacher with more elementary experience to make the elementary-to-middle transition easier.

Similar experience for us nearly 20 years ago in Southern California. Adopted two rescue sibling cats, and the interview was worse than most any job interview I've ever had. The condition of adoption was them coming out, and us passing, an inspection of our home!

Final question of the interview: if one or both of these cats have health issues during their lifetimes, how much money are you willing to spend to give them the care they need? For fear of losing out (we really wanted them), I kind of panic and blurted out "$50,000."

Wifey gave me a "WTF" look. Kicker: we kept track of all of our expenses, and by the time they died at age 16 (13 here's with us), we'd actually spent over $50,000 total to take care of them.

346 I was always considered the strict mom. But I was always hated by my kids principals and teachers because I didn't take any bullsh#t from them and didn't allow my kids to take any either, and my kids went to Catholic schools. I would take my kids out of school if they were going today. My daughter, just today, told me I would have been on the news if they forced masks on them. Your children are the most precious thing you will ever have. How could you allow this to happen to them? And parents are allowing it to happen.

Well, I still had full legal custody, so, I took the week off, went and got him, and we hiked and biked and snow skied all week. Needless to say the X was NOT happy... but.... we were laughing.

My opinion is stay if you want to, but then stop bitching about where you are. Or go somewhere better. But what everyone seems to do is option 3, stay and then complain endlessly about how bad things are. You seem very bothered when someone points this out.

This is something that happens all the time. People stay in shitty situations for years and years when they could easily put an end to that situation. Where they live, their job, their wife/husband. All sorts of things that keep them miserable for decades they could end that misery. But looking for a new job is hard. So is getting divorced. And so is picking up and moving somewhere new. It's easier to make excuses about what it's not possible.

419 Obviously, this has two major issues. First, nobody's mask sits on their face that tightly. Second, they're ASSUMING droplets of a certain size are needed. Has THAT been rigorously tested?
Posted by: bonhomme

That's what makes those blue paper chin diapers so funny. More air is going through the sides than the fabric itself. The 3M N95 and especially N100 do fit snuggly around the face. They don't fold flat and are pre-formed to create a seal. The N100 has instructions for fitting the mask, and there's a separate flexible seal that runs all the way around. Of course, nobody would let me wear one of these because of the exhausts flap.

So - I can't actually have protection is what you're saying. Or in other words, submit, but not that much.

428 For a long time I've thought of masks being as much about people wanting to sport "gear" as virtue signaling.

Purposeless, low-achieving people feel more capable and engaged when sporting some "gear" that makes it look like they're engaged in some exciting, specialized activity e.g. sunglasses dangling on croakies, wearing a holster or a cool back pack. Or a fatass, weekend warrior cyclist who has to wear fluorescent polypropylene tights and dick-shaped helmets to cruise around the block.

Because it's "gear." Like Slow Joe wearing his mask off one ear like he's a smoke jumper who just deployed out of a helicopter, taking a quick breather while his "gear" dangles off an ear.

I do think that for some the masks are about the virtue signaling. But for lots of others I think it has more to do with their need for tokens of meaning and accomplishment to compensate for their vacuuous, meaningless lives.

432 Acoustician here... can confirm that lip-reading is critical during formative/developmental years. It is not until well into one's 20's, after the brain has fully developed, that humans can fully interpret conversational speech with only partial/missing information. At that stage our brains are able to "fill in the gaps."

This "filling in" is not possible for young children and teenagers. Not being able to see peoples' mouths while they speak in a classroom is, in my opinion, tantamount to child abuse.

And this is not some new-fangled information. I learned this in college in the late 90's. The government knows exactly what it's doing with these mask mandates... creating a generation of intellectual delinquents. I'm truly amazed nobody has been strung up from a lamppost yet.

Question. Given the number of kids (and me, when I was a kid) who seem to speak and understand just fine over the telephone, how does that jibe? I'm not talking about really little kids, but 10+ year-old kids seem to handle the phone perfectly well. Is it a duration thing or an "I know this is an exception to how normal things work and so I can handle it on those terms" things or something else? Because teenagers especially seem to be able to do that "filling in" or else they wouldn't talk on the phone like they do.

ASVAB is not so much a pass fail as a measure of trainability across a variety of skill sets. The overall measure is the GT score which is NOT a measure of IQ, but an indicator of the ability to learn. Higher usually means better at learning. But the other scores are important too. A generator mechanic may have some great scores that an electronics technician will not have.

483 ASVAB is not so much a pass fail as a measure of trainability across a variety of skill sets. The overall measure is the GT score which is NOT a measure of IQ, but an indicator of the ability to learn. Higher usually means better at learning. But the other scores are important too. A generator mechanic may have some great scores that an electronics technician will not have.

Right, but at some threshold the assessment gets to be, "I can't do anything with you." To score at that level, you're either actually retarded or you wanted to blow the exam.

484 434 Long after this bullshit is over and the crappy schools long forgotten, you'll still have your kids. It's up to you to make them into the kind of people they should be.

Old Preacher's joke: There was this young preacher, and when he and his wife started having kids, he had this sermon he liked to give which he called "7 Sure Fire ways to raise Great Kids!" Well time went on, and by the time the kids were in high school it had changed to "5 really good ideas on raising your children"

Finally, when they were grown and he had gotten old, it changed again, this time to "3 things that may or may not work with your kids."

485 Oh that's right, you have a male. I have girls. The boys are really cool and look macho. Smartest cats ever.

Hi CaliGirl!

Tangentially, I ended up getting a Bengal from a breeder b/c no rescues would let me adopt a cat - because I hadn't had a cat in a while/didn't currently have a cat/have a dog.

This little guy bosses my dog around all day long lol. They are best buds. I could (would?) get a second Bengal but the poor dog tho. it would be a lot for her lol.

487 In talking to a couple Marine recruiters last month, it's STAGGERING to me that ANYONE that's not actually mentally retarded would fail the ASVAB.
Posted by: Sponge

My son was paired with a recruit at O'Hare with the sole purpose of helping him get on the bus to Great Lakes. The recruit was so low on the scale he was immediately ID'd by the RDCs and pulled out of line and was never seen again.

Josh said he was certain the poor kid had some sort of serious mental deficiency.

The big red tabby-with-white I adopted in 1983 and lived with until '99 was like that. He could be difficult, but he was my cat and I was his human, no question.

Correct.
That's why every job in the military (military occupational specialities) have minimum scores. Fall below that and you don't get in.
You can deliberately fail and in an all volunteer course, fine. Why even take the test. But in a draft, harder to hide it.
PS
If any of you have kids/grandkids thinking military, tell them to take the ASVABin high school. It is easier. Better scores means more job opportunities.

Poor dog is right if you were to get another one. If I remember yours is still young. Mine is 13 and she's still a pistol but not as crazy as when they were young. I had a second one but she had cancer and we put her down a few years ago.
It's good your cat has a playmate in your dog. They are the busiest cats I've ever seen.

492 We didn't look for fights in my school. But when someone from another town came in picking one, everyone chipped in a few punches.

And we expected fights when we rolled into their towns too.

A lot of bruise, black eyes, and blood for everyone.

494 Would not matter, less than about 20% of kids today would meet the physical standards.

They cut every sport in gym class around here except basketball many years ago. We had all sports and had to pass a test in each to graduate. Kennedy had a fitness program for kids schools adapted. Everyone was skeeny and Italian moms loved it.

495 100% Correct. GO TO YOUR SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS.

You DO NOT HAVE TO BE A PARENT. In fact, it is probably better if you are not a parent. You are paying for these schools.

We need to make their lives a living hell unless and until they shape up. If they all quit, so much the better.

These people hate children. They are evil.

496 Question. Given the number of kids (and me, when I was a kid) who seem to speak and understand just fine over the telephone, how does that jibe?

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at February 11, 2022 04:23 PM

Good question! And I don't have a firm/concrete answer on this, but I'm guessing it has to do with the singular-focus setting of a kid on phone call. Classrooms, by comparison, are filled with a multitude of stimuli, from physical/hand motions of the teacher, chalk board instruction, note taking, other/student distractions, and let's be frank, just plain old child boredom.

A kid on a phone call is probably 100% focused on the phone call... a kid in a classroom is, well, you get the idea.

498 I live in the same school district in Naperville as that dad. My youngest is a senior at the hs his daughter will go to. I understand him completely. This is an almost over resourced district, but none of that matters when every kid has fallen through the cracks. My son isn't bullied like his daughter and Naperville is full of bullies, but once they went back this year, my son, who loved going to school, played sports, was in band, has to sit in his car and convince himself to walk in. Sometimes he throws up. It sucks and we do our best for him and the school helps, but you can't go home again, District 203. And everyone voted for the same assholes on that board this year. Why? Hopefully, this will open some eyes. And Pritzker still won't relent. Make it make sense!
