The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"It's critically important to make sure that transgender and nonbinary youth not only feel supported but valued and affirmed for who they are," Democratic congresswoman Angie Craig (Minn.)

Quote II

This is about an uprising of everyday citizens in democracies around the world. It’s not just Canada, it’s not the United States, it’s western Europe, too, rising against the biggest threat to actual democracy, which I think is the rise of this managerial class in democracies around the world that are crushing the will of everyday people through bureaucracies.” Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy

Quote III

"The outcome of this incident has placed an even larger divide in my [child’s] lack of trust in law enforcement. This is exactly the wrong relationship and is a dangerous precursor for [their] future." Cathy Austin of Burlington, VT

Probably a Cloggenstein originally from Brattleboro.

Quote IV

“The department issued these officers old and deteriorated beanbag rounds,” So rather than coming out as a soft beanbag they came out as a hardened projectile…so you had rioters who were seriously injured by these beanbags and it shouldn’t have happened but it’s not the officers fault it’s management’s fault.”

“It’s probably a very righteous personal injury case. But it doesn’t make the officers’ actions illegal or a criminal offense.” Attorney Doug O’Connell

We've heard about the immigration of Californians to Texas. Meet James who did it the other way around.

A man said he moved from Texas to become homeless in San Francisco because the California city’s government is paying him $620 per month and hundreds more in food stamps while he sells Narcan and subscribes to Amazon Prime and Netflix on his cell phone.

The homeless man, James, claims it took him just one phone call to get government assistance including hundreds of dollars in cash and about $100 in food stamps, according to the Daily Mail. ‘Free money’ is motivation to stay homeless, said the man living on the streets of San Francisco since June.

‘This right now is literally by choice, literally by choice, If we’re going to be realistic, they pay you to be homeless here,’ James told Michael Shellenberger, the author of San Fransicko. The book argues that the city’s progressive leaders have made homelessness, crime and inequity worse.

‘F**king phone call bro… Two hundred food stamps and $620 cash a month. Forget about it. Why wouldn’t I do it? You know, it’s f**king free money dude,’ James said.

The joys of a government provided living wage.

11) The poor you will always have with you,[a] but you will not always have me. Matthew 26:11. Poor on earth? Sure. But, not on the moon!!!

Privatise the moon to help wipe out poverty on Earth say economists
The Adam Smith Institute believes the moon should be divided into parcels of land each of which is assigned to a different country, then nations would then be able to rent out plots

The Adam Smith Institute believes the satellite 239,000 miles away should be divided into parcels of land each of which is assigned to a different country.

Nations would then be able to rent out smaller plots to tycoons and businesses.

Cash from outer space property rights would boost the global economy and help reduce world poverty, according to the financial thinktank.

Experts reckon the move would also help clean up space which is littered with 3,000 dead satellites, 34,000 pieces of junk bigger than 10cm and millions of smaller bits.

Because no-one owns space nobody bothers to clean it up.

Governments cause poverty and addiction.

When is not enough?

There are no easy solutions for class action lawyers whose settlements have been delayed by objectors’ appeals. Just ask the plaintiffs' lawyers who obtained $113.5 million in settlements for lithium ion battery purchasers.

Last December, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, approved a final round of agreements with defendants in the antitrust class action, awarding about $40.5 million in fees and expenses to class counsel from Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein; Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro; and Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy. Rogers also granted $220,000 in fees to the Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute, which had persuaded the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2019 that the settlement allocation formula must take into account differences in state laws governing recovery for consumers with antitrust claims. (The case alleges a price-fixing cartel that overcharged for batteries used in cell phones, camcorders, cordless power tools and other products.)

The Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute, headed by Ted Frank, has appealed the fee award to class counsel. Lieff, Cotchett and Hagens Berman, in turn, have appealed the award to Frank’s group. It’s fair to say that there is no love lost between these factions.

Oh that little old man who bought a lithium battery for his cordless tool. Well he can go piss up a rope.

Speaking of lithium batteries..........

Rare form of sulfur offers a key to triple-capacity EV batteries

As electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, scientists see great potential in lithium-sulfur batteries as a more environmentally friendly way to power them. This is because they don't rely on the same expensive and difficult-to-source raw materials, such as cobalt, but other problems relating to their stability has held the technology back so far. Engineers at Drexel University have made a breakthrough they say takes these batteries closer to commercial use, by leveraging a rare chemical phase of sulfur to prevent damaging chemical reactions.

What else is Pfzier not telling us?

FDA Acting Director Janet Woodcock and an underling stated: “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been notified by Pfizer that new data have recently emerged regarding its emergency use authorization request for the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine in children 6 months through 4 years of age. As part of its rolling submission, the company recently notified the agency of additional findings from its ongoing clinical trial. Based on the agency’s preliminary assessment, and to allow more time to evaluate additional data, we believe additional information regarding the ongoing evaluation of a third dose should be considered as part of our decision-making for potential authorization. Therefore, the FDA is postponing the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee meeting originally scheduled for Feb. 15.”

Shooting up a 6 month old infant with an unproven rushed vaccine is child abuse.

Sometimes you forget to do the little things. Is he a Genius Award Winner?

Alaska State Troopers say that the pilot of an aircraft which was located after a crash near hostaer Pass on Feb. 6 has been located safely, but not before thousands of dollars were expended in search efforts for the man.

Troopers wrote in an online dispatch that members of the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Alaska Air National Guard, and volunteer Civil Air Patrol began searching for a downed aircraft after an Emergency Locator Transmitter was activated east of the Parks Highway near the communities of Willow and Talkeetna on Feb. 6.

Following the signal, no distress calls or reports of downed aircraft came in, but the Civil Air Patrol began looking for downed aircraft with eight volunteer members over multiple days, who searched for five hours in the air and 13 hours on the ground when severe weather hampered aerial searches.

He might not be a Super Bowl victor today. But he is Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

11-year-old Audrey Soape lost her father and grandfather last year and was feeling sad about the upcoming daddy-daughter dance at her church in Round Rock, Texas.

Audrey's mom, Holly, wanted to do something special for her daughter, so she reached out to their favorite NFL player, Anthony Harris, to ask if he would take Audrey to the dance.

Much to her surprise, he said yes.

If you know Chicagoland, you know a big segment of all the restaurants that are not chains are owned by Greeks.

Fun fact on EMP. You could be in a field of grain, and as long as you have a digital watch you can tell if an EMP pulse goes by. If the wavefront (with 10 nanosecond rise time) has enough power it will blank a digital watch, and then it resets.

Good times, good times. That watch still works.

74 Checked the score of the SB. Rams won. Close game. Must be hell to be a Bengals fan. All 3 SB's they have been in were close and they lost them. Oh well. I didn't watch. I'm assuming it was a pretty well-played game.

I'm not a gambler but I do watch that Fox betting show occasionally. Clay Travis is on it but that's not why to watch. The delightful and smokin' hot Alex Curry is the host.

The more energy that a battery can hold, the more dangerous it becomes. Lithium ion batteries are already fairly dangerous. If they short out, there is no way to put out the resulting fire. The proposed lithium sulfur battery has three times the energy.

The problem is having fuel and oxidizer in the same container. If a metal-air battery or other fuel-air battery could be developed, the danger would be less. As things are now, I would never trust a large high-powered battery pack.

170 Why are the restaurants so hurting for help, almost 700 days into this pandemic disruption, I asked.

Last time I checked the labor participation rate was something like 61%.

Chicagoland is Cook County. Which has vax mandates to work. Which means a lot of folk can't work.

Which is just as well because we can't enter the restaurants to eat there, either.

In the 80's it got the reputation of being the closing song that club goers asked for more than any other, and everyone I knew in a bar band at the time got thoroughly sick to death of being asked to play it. That could almost be a music thread. What songs do you like the first part OK and but before the song is over it is change the channel or fast forward. Hotel Calif. is another one for me. I still like the instrumental start of that tune but once the lyrics start, nope nope nope.

Bottom line: absent foreign intervention, Russia will win but it won't be a walk over despite Russia's massive numerical superiority because Russia has other obligations and cannot devote all its power against Ukraine, because Ukraine has been training for guerilla warfare for years, and because Ukraine will play for time hoping for an international bail out.

251 They say musical savants can hear like 4 or more notes at once where normals get noise. I'm opposite of that. Fancy show off shit at the end of a lot of songs is noise to my non-musical brain."

4 notes is nothing, that's standard 4 part choral stuff. Beethoven and the other symphonic greats do 2 or 3 times that most of the time.

That said, the Bengals o-line is atrocious, they gave up a league worst 51 sacks during the regular season, nine more against the Titans and seven more tonight. That is *far* too many.

Finally, while Zac Taylor did get them to the big game his play calling and decision making just killed them. Seriously, he's the Joe Biden of head coaches, every decision he makes in the moment is wrong.

I think it's bc he plays to his gut feel rather than the percentages and that's a great way to lose a Super Bowl, which is what happened tonight ... McVeigh simply outcoached him. I can see why Taylor was 6-25 coming into this season.

Ah well, in the end it's just a game so on to the next one. Pitchers and catchers, pitchers and catchers lol ....

329 In the 80's it got the reputation of being the closing song that club goers asked for more than any other, and everyone I knew in a bar band at the time got thoroughly sick to death of being asked to play it. To the point where if anyone said "PLAY FREEBIRD!!!" the universal response from any band was a massive groan.

Posted by: Tom Servo at February 13, 2022 10:45 PM (evAgx)

True story- Back in the later 90's a friend of mine was hosting an open mike night at some club. He calls me and asks if I can grab some musicians from my circle, and people, and anybody that would show up so the night didn't flop. The band I was in at the time said yeah what the hell we'll go, which is something we never normally did, because we kinda thought it was bad form to show up at one of those things which was usually more for people to just go and jam, not have a polished band show up. Anyway we round up our guys and some other musicians and others and we go. At some point during the night we go up to play, and some chick yells freebird. The singer walks over to the bass player, says a few things, and the bass player starts playing Killers from iron maiden. lol

344 why I still like InnaGaddaDaVida, even if it too long to sit through - when I was in high school, I was in a marching band, which was fun but not all that good because the Brass and the Drum sections had people who fancied themselves as Musicians, so they would usually do whatever they wanted to do, not what they were supposed to do.

The drummers especially had this cadence they would break into that was really quite good, whenever the band was entering or leaving the field. It took me years to realize that what they had always been doing was the key part of the drum solo from InnaGaddaDaVida; they really had it down good! Hearing it always brings a fond memory of those days back.

That's been going on for a while - the Russian base in Syria uses jamming to defeat possible drone attacks.

Now, if you want real fun, try using GPS near the Kremlin. (The Russians don't vector flights over Moscow, and the Kremlin jamming is low-power.)

412 Pretty hard to believe Putin would actually go off on Ukraine - esp to the point of bombing Kiev, etc. - but I guess anything's possible when he smells blood in the water with a leader as weak as Biden.

Still seems like a grab for the easternmost coast (with seaport) to connect the northern oblasts and Crimea and then a swap to not place nukes in Cuba and Venezuela (which sounds like bluster anyway) in exchange for us pulling sites out of Russia's Eastern European front door makes more sense.

If I were China I would jump on Taiwan if/when this all goes down.

This still doesn't sound right though -- why if I'm Putin do I choose now to make a bold move on a city as far west as Kiev and/or further into Eastern Europe?? This makes no sense.

April 30, 2013 -- Want to own a little piece of heaven? It's yours, starting at $19.99 an acre--on the moon. If you prefer, you can buy property on Venus or Mercury.

Mercury is nice this time of year. The temperature tops 700 degrees but they say it's a dry heat.

If that's still too close to the hustle and bustle of Earth, there's Mars--33.9 million miles from Times Square. A deed, with your name on it, to a prime-view one acre lot on Mars will set you back $22.49, plus tax, plus shipping (not from Mars) and handling.

Farfetched side plots about Kevin Costner's girlfriend (Jennifer Garner) telling him she's pregnant and his mother wanting to spread his father's ashes all on the same day as the NFL draft, but other than that it was pretty good. Lots of cameos by NFL players, coaches, former players, sportscasters, etc. I'd watch it again.

Pretty much how I see it. I don't know if I'm an outlier or what, but I made peace with what I am looong ago. I came to terms with what I am. If I'm broke, I don't know it, because I'm exactly who I want to be. They were my choices. I often wonder if there is a collective where all of mankind's experiences go, kinda like a galactic library. For example, take a kid, 2 years old, never sat at a piano, yet gets behind one and plays like frigging Beethoven. What is he tapping into? Is there some great galactic knowledge base that he somehow managed to access? I think the secret may be finding out what you're good at, come to terms with it, and be the best you can be at it, and eventually you just become part of the great knowledge dump in the sky. I sit halfway between science and religion, because neither one can explain it all. We could be one big science experiment for all I know. I think god probably would be happy if we did all we could to gain human experiences without being a shithead and contribute them.

I've been conked out on the couch and just got up, and Miley said y'all were asking.

I'm okay. My BP is still a little on the high side -- they've put on some more meds (different beta blocker and upped the dosage of lisinopril). Basically I had another "hypertensive urgency" episode, along with dizziness. That suggested a possible stroke or TIA, and that thoroughly checked all that out.

Good news is nothing showed up, my brain is fine and dandy, and my heart is fine and dandy too. Cat scans, MRI, ECG monitoring for the whole damn, and an echocardiogram. Everything looked good.

Incidentally, blood sugar has improved as well. Early this morning, my glucose level was just 87 (whatever units those are, I forget).

681 Nope. JQ is still here!

682 Everyone of any importance has turned in for the evening.

I, however, am still At Your Service. fwiw

683 Publius, would you describe that negative air setup at the hospital?

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess, bearer of coof? at February 14, 2022 02:33 AM (Mzdiz)

684
Now, the bad and stupid news. I tested positive for the Coof. To be admitted to the hospital, that is required. And I popped positive.

I was experiencing zero symptoms of anything cold like or respiratory disease like -- anything beyond normal. I have hay fever, and various little allergies to various and sundry particles Mother nature throws out. My nose and sinuses are complaining of different things all year round.

This time of year, cold and dry, my sinuses don't like that.

So now that I know, there may be something little bug messing around, but it's not even a cold.

687 "Negative air setup?" OH, I know...

That's where they gots this big ol' fan doodad, an' it sucks all the other rooms' sicky air into *your* hospital room while exhausting out the window, right?

Posted by: JQ at February 14, 2022 02:36 AM (dB4Iz)

688 Yeah hon, you already covered me with your germs.

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess, bearer of coof? at February 14, 2022 02:37 AM (Mzdiz)

689 Ak we are all broken... God works with broken he mostly has no other choice.
My parish send me a miss you post card. Gave a date we will be dropped from the registry of active parishioners. Why would they give an expiration date? Maybe a phone call or a visit would work better. Disappointing at best.

USNtakim, that really sounds rather unchristian. Maybe you should point that out to whatever azzhole decided to send such a card out.

Yes, the negative pressure hospital room. They put Coof positive patients in these. These are regular hospital rooms they have jury-rigged with a big ass (and probably very expensive) 2000 CFM blower device. It sucks air out of the room through a massive HEPA filter device, than blows it out through a large (maybe 1.5' diameter or so flex duck.

The removed one of the windows and jury rigged something like a giant hospital window-sized dryer wall vent to blow that 2000CFM flow outside.

Being in the room is miserable. That thing is loud, and sleep not to mention concentration was impossible. Couldn't hear shit either, including what everyone was saying. The damn masks, face shields and bunny suits muffled them all to begin with.

Oh, and the food was the absolute worst I've ever had at any hospital, most likely anywhere. Breakfast was the worst grits, scrambled eggs, and piece of link sausage you've ever seen. May have have been 3D printed or something.

Well, I'm out, getting sleepy again. See y'all tomorrow.

697 The damn masks, face shields and bunny suits muffled them all to begin with.

This has been a problem for many people, ever since the beginning! Especially those of us with hearing problems.

I worked in a very loud (hearing protection required) environment for over 25 years. Yes, I wore either earplugs or muffs every day.

Still, I have nerve damage. And became more dependent on lip-reading than I was ever consciously aware of-- until people began covering their mouths!

699 Glad you are home publius, and that makes for a happy miley.

As for bp meds, I'm on a combo of 3, amlodipine, metropolol and lisinopril, they all work different ways. I'm apparently hard to control, but then Jules could have told 'em that.

Oh pub, while you were gone I got branded a troll last night. That was too funny. Glad you are home and better.

Posted by: Farmer at February 14, 2022 02:58 AM (55Qr6)

700 That was funny, Farmer! Some unknown nic calling you a troll! LOL

I take Amlodipine too. With Losartan.

701 Got 15 lbs of cat by the keyboard, trying to tell me it's bedtime.

But I'm not that tired yet! Silly cat. He's a good 'un so far.

Posted by: JQ at February 14, 2022 03:04 AM (dB4Iz)

702
Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention (my brain is not hitting on all 8 with all this going on). Several of the nurses and doctors, including the ER as well as the upper floor were all apologetic about the "protocols".

They all (the ones that talked) said "We're all getting sick and tired of this crap, it's driving us all nuts, and we hope this nonsense is going to end soon.". They're not the ones pushing it. It's higher up administration and state/local health agencies.

And they basically chuckled about my asymptomatic Coof infection. The doctor upstairs doing all the stroke assessment and heart diagnostics said they've seen that all through this mess, from the very beginning. People coming in for something else, testing positive, and having no Coof symptoms at all.

We all knew that, too. But the media and "public health" didn't want to point that out.

I'm out for real, now, take care.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at February 14, 2022 03:05 AM (Mzdiz)

703 Mornin', folk,

Publius has had quite a time of it, I see. Good to hear you're back home and can get some sleep at last.

I'm up to work out before heading back to the Crazy World that is my employer these days. A quick pass at my state taxes indicates that I will get a tiny bit back this year, so I'm going to work the form up and mail it this week.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is continuing. More later.

707 This cat is awesome. Probably someone dumped him out here, he's been around for almost 2 years. Skitzy at first but has warmed up to us over the last year. Invited him into the house for short periods around Christmas, knowing temps would drop to near zero very soon.

Started keeping him indoors overnight, around New Year. Got him to the vet, checked out, got all his shots... he's our baby now!

Mellow dude, he is.

I need to reread that novel. When I read it at age 20, I had no knowledge of the business world at all (though I still found the story compelling). I bet I'd get a lot more out of it now.

He's hanging . . . but he has developed an antipathy to our company. He'll be sprawled in one room, and when I come in, he'll get up and move to the other. I'm not kidding. He purrs when we pet or groom him, but he no longer wants to be in the same room with us. This is something I never thought I'd see from a cat who used to insist on sitting on or near us. Dementia? I don' t know. He still knows his name, where the food and litter box are, all that.

Maybe it's because of our frequent assaults (as he sees it?) on him for meds. And maybe he just wants to be alone. But . . . it's disheartening to say the least. It makes this whole scene even more difficult.

I don't get it.
Why not just tell his dad when he gets home, and have him paddle the boy and return the goods?

Oh, you decided you didn't need dad, and now your son is a "they/them" who cannot be controlled and is crazy?
Weird how that worked out.
Who could have seen it coming?!

Now, lets not see the same hands every time.
