Inflation Hits Another High, Marking Its Highest Level in 40 Years

Let's Go Brandon.

It jumped 7.5% since last February, the biggest year-over-year increase since the A-Team debuted. (My bad, that was 1983.)

Inflation has now hit the highest rate in 40 years, jumping 7.5 percent since last February, the biggest year-over-year increase since February 1982, more than experts had expected. Among the reasons that the AP blamed were "shortages of supplies and workers" as well as "heavy doses of federal aid." Paging Joe Biden, his mandates, and his spending, although, of course, they don't say that. Unfortunately, they're not expecting it to slow anytime soon.

Say, didn't Biden's Covid Response Team just demand billions and billions and billions more in new covid "aid" yesterday?

Norms are being restored, if the Norms you mean are the inflation and malaise of 1982. (Which did happen under Reagan, but it was required to wring out the stagflation of the Carter years.)

When measured from December to January, inflation was 0.6%, the same as the previous month and more than economists had expected.

There's always so much unexpected economic news under Democrat "presidents."

Boy, Democrat presidencies must be exciting times for analysts! So many unexpected plot twists!

Biden spent 2021 paying people not to work. When businesses complained that they were short-staffed because people were being paid not to work, Brandon told them to "pay them more" -- to compete as an employer with the government, which was paying people as a non-employer.

This would raise everyone's wages, he whispered. (And it was, in fact, a creepy whisper moment.)

But here's the thing that anyone who understands anything about economics understands:

If everyone's wages increase, especially when due to an artificial external factor like government forcing, then nobody's wages increase.

Because all that's actually happened is that the default wage -- the "curve," if we were talking about grades in a class -- has risen, and everyone is still the same distance from that point.

And when employers have to pay everyone more money, they raise prices, because their costs are obviously higher.

Or as the AP sugarcoats it: Higher wages "can pressure" companies to raise prices.

Which means the "higher wages" buy the same amount of product.

Which means they're not higher wages in real terms.

The dollar has just been reduced in value.

Wages are rising at the fastest pace in at least 20 years, which can pressure companies to raise prices to cover higher labor costs.

Manchin declared I Told You So:

manchininflationstatement.png

Now let me tell you a little story.

The Democrats used to push a strategy of taxing the rich at very high levels, and then wasting that money by pissing it down ratholes they claimed was "social spending on the poor."

But under Clinton and then under Obama, the Democrat Party repositioned itself to be the party of the urban corporate elite and the mega-wealthy. And the urban corporate elite and the mega-wealthy do not like paying high tax rates.

But the Democrat Party still wanted to piss money down ratholes.

So the Democrat Party became enamored of a new "theory" of money: That they could literally spend as much money as they wanted, pissing it down ratholes, and not bother raising taxes on their mega-wealthy donors, because the government could just print as much money as it liked and never worry about balancing the books and nothing bad would ever, ever happen.

This is really their theory. It's called "Modern Monetary Theory" (MMT). They called it that because "Retard Money Theory" was already taken.

Now that this "theory" is being disproven by soaring inflation, people are... questioning it.

The New York Times recently ran a positive piece on this lunacy that you can literally run the mint's printing presses all day and night and see no negative consequences, and real economists are critical.

Here's the leftwing Obama economic advisor Larry Summers calling this obviously lunatic theory snake-oil:

Screenshot (1475).png

One critic notes the MMT people do not really have a theory they can even write down, or that could ever be tested -- they just have unfalsifiable claims and slogans.

[A]ny attempt to engage with the actual substance of MMT quickly finds that such substance is curiously lacking. MMT proponents almost always refuse to specify exactly how they think the economy works. They offer a package of policy prescriptions, but these prescriptions can only be learned by consulting the MMT proponents themselves. There is no model here -- no set of equations or definite formal statements that a layperson could use to generate their own MMT policy prescriptions without appealing directly to the gurus.

...maybe MMT people don't write down models of the economy because they can't. Because as Françoise, Christian, Rondina, Palley, and others have concluded, MMT is not a theory of how the economy works, but rather a set of political memes to push for more deficit spending.

But here's the unexpected -- or the inevitable -- plot twist.

You may have noticed that the woman pushing MMT is, in fact, a woman.

You may have also noticed that the Current Year is 2022, and we must Believe All Women, including, especially, when they say stupid things that could not possibly be true, especially when these stupid things involve impossibilities of basic math.

And so:

Real MMT, like real communism, has never been tried. But today, Axios has published a piece titled "Male economists are freaking out over a NYT profile" that suggests the pushback against MMT is akin to mansplaining.

This Twitter-based econ fight is about more than one economist. It's an argument over a natural economic experiment -- the U.S. government spending unprecedented sums to keep the economy from free-falling during COVID.

And the gender dynamics-- male economists piling on against a female economist and a female journalist, Times' reporter Jeanna Smialek, in ways distinctive from typical academic arguments -- look terrible here.

Women are men's equals, but also, you're never allowed to criticize women and you also have to pretend they're right even when they're completely wrong or it's "mansplaining."

The Socratic Method

It's just mansplaining with questions.

22 "Critical Money Theory" would have just been giving the game away.

Colorado Alex says I've got the Retard Money Theory wrong:

That isn't even MMT. Even MMTs proponents agree that you have to remove money from the system via taxation. And you can't simply spend willy-nilly, because the spending has to result in an increase in GDP. This is just standard DC "spend everything!" politics dressed up in another cheap costume. It's no different than we've seen in previous years, just a lot more of it.

Pay raises offset inflation? You mean like when the grocery has to pay their employees more, so they raise prices even more?

Inflation is always and only a monetary phenomenon.

Reductions or increases in productivity will affect prices independent of monetary policy. If say Iran nuked Saudi Arabia oil prices and then everything else would shoot up.

I heard it (the term income equality) from someone yesterday. She and her husband are old school liberals, and I don't think they know how awful the Democrats are because they only read the NY Times or listen to MSNBC. The two of them are better off than we are financially because he is a retired engineeer and she is a retired teacher.. I said we have to get my 19 year old car repaired which will be quite a bit of money and she offered to pay for the repairs because she loves me and I love her, because she is a very generous person and because of income inequality. I said "I didn't think that was necessary although very kind" because I don't want to be beholden to anyone that isn't family and I'm not going to ask them either.

I think every "modern" theory leftists embrace are intentionally made to lower the attack surface to near zero. That specifically requires being vague as hell about what you're actually arguing for, or doing a Motte and Bailey strategy. Eg: "Feminism is the radical idea that women are equal to men." (Motte) vs "A biological man is a woman if they say so." (Bailey)

Part of being vague as hell about what you're actually arguing for is the counter-attack. When you find yourself being asked a question that gets to the heart of the matter, Eg: "Define 'woman'", just attack. "You're making me feel unsafe by erasing me!"

Oh, good. It took less than two years to turn America into Venezuela.

And that's not sarcasm. That's excellent news. One, because when there are enough CANADIANS to stand up to corpo-rat tyranny, America really needs to be shamed into acting. Second, Goldman Sachs justifies their outsize influence over every aspect of American life with "merit" and competence. Take that away, and repudiating all debt owed to them will be a snap.

241 Corporations do not help themselves in this by paying such outlandish, ridiculous pay packages to the guys who are running them so badly. I get that you want the best and brightest, so you offer good pay and benefits, but are you getting the value of what you're paying?

And when one guy makes 8 figures while the prices keep going up because you have to pay your workers more, that doesn't look good to the public. It hurts your argument about prices and costs.

Obviously if Joe Exec makes 18 million a year and he has 5 million workers, cutting his pay won't make much difference overall, its just a matter of appearance and public relations. And as I said, is this guy really worth that?

How much did Zucker get paid to run CNN off a cliff? How much do sportsball commissioners get paid to ruin their sports and crater ratings and ad revenues? How much does a studio exec get to pump out bomb after bomb of woke crap?

243 Keynesian Economics = Debt is Good....'zat it?
Posted by: BignJames at February 10, 2022 01:03 PM (AwYPR)

Nope. Keynesian Economics is really more about how the classical dichotomy of nominal and real variables doesn't exist, at least in the short run, and that changes to nominal variables (price levels, interest rates) can affect real variables (such as output). Keynes primary interest was in how to avoid periods of high unemployment, since he saw them as destructive to society.

Besides providing cover for Brandon, this statement is also a nod to the far-left/socialist "economists" that reject the notion that higher wages necessitate price increases and inflation. For example, the trans-continental railroad, telegraphs, telephones, airplanes, etc., all freed up time. So, it became appropriate for the money supply to increase to match those increases in available time.

When politicians do stupid shit that actually consumes time and simultaneously increases money supply they are screwing all of us from both directions.

Its like anywhere, a few loud voices sound like the majority when the majority just stays quiet about it.

I mean, the complaints of the few aren't invalid, but they are too broadly sweeping. Its one thing to complain about how you were treated or how too often this happens, but its another entirely to declare all marriages to be that way.

Men are very justly leery of getting into a hard long term commitment with how crazy things are and how poor many women act these days (and men), but that doesn't mean marriage as a whole or even generally is misery.

326 Democrats have always gained power by promising more government handouts during economic downturns.

What's now interesting is, there's literally no public outcry for more government spending.
That is, for the 1st time in history, the working class is blaming the Democrats, specifically their spending sprees; they've bought off all the working class they can by now.
See also, The Law of Diminishing Returns; which has also not been repealed no matter how many economic papers Studies majors write.

335 The Canadian truckers and farmers are doing a number on the federal and regional Canadian governments. Each time the government tries to crack down on them they counter by closing off more and more. It is like watching an anaconda suffocate its prey. The more the governments struggle, the more the truckers and farmers tighten the restrictions.

Take a look at the Apple map on your phone. You can now see the congestion caused by the three big border crossings that have been closed (Coutts, the ND border crossing, Windsor). Those are obvious (often they are categorized as construction on the apple map. But, if you look closely at other smaller border crossings out west - there is also "construction" going on on the Canadian side as well. News flash - its is utterly brutal weather right now at all of those boarder crossings. There is no "construction". I think it is famers and truckers quietly shutting down those other crossings as well.

377 Printing money instead of selling bonds and paying interest on those bonds ... COULD make sense. But clearly BigGov has no discipline to do it correctly.

IF they manage to "break the USD", and perhaps insert some Global Currency (replacing USD as the reserve currency) ... then inflation in the USA could really get rolling, since anyone holding USD in the world would look to cash out, and we would have to pay premium prices for foreign goods.

That might help our trade balance, but USA would have to "refinance". But "they" will keep acquiring America itself, offshoring ownership of everything, till we stop them. Not sure how that happens, since they run everything.

Then, of course, the ball moves to another cup. "It's the fault of the damned rich people," they explain, "except for the rich people you can see. It's the other rich people. The ones you can't see. Phantasmagoric rich people who wreck everything while the good rich people (the ones you can see) bankroll our campaigns so we can fight for you, the little guy. I've noted that irony before. If Trump was been allowed to win, he'd be dealing with inflation right now. Probably not as bad because of certain policy differences, but we'd definitely still be in an inflationary environment.

And now...Biden and Democrats get all of the perceived blame.

My brother is a hard-core socialist. So I've been inundated with all the lefty talking points meant to denigrate Friedman. It's obvious why many waited till after his death to attack him, because he was too smart to deal with directly. It's also obvious why they try so hard to smear him, because if people knew and understood his points, all this nonsense with government spending would be a lot harder to get away with.

Except that wages aren't rising quickly everywhere. The effective minimum has gone up by ~50% but people who already had jobs, older middle class people, they're seeing raises of 3-4%.

So this is yet another thing doing it's part to destroy the middle class and savings. The wealthy don't care, the poor cheer it on because they fail to understand the end result.

444 258 208 Keynesian Economics = Debt is Good....'zat it?
---
Keynes advocated government spending to counter the business cycle. Spend in deficit when the economy is contracting, then accumulate surpluses when the economy is expanding.

Politicians used that as a justification for spending more all the time. Nobody ever got around to the accumulate surpluses part.

Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis
--------------------
Biggest problem with Keynes is he was never an entrepreneur--he got wealth speculating in currency values so his ideas on capital investment and formation were undeveloped. He was not a Marxist nor a mathematician. Paul Samuelson was the main Keynesian theorist that fleshed out Keynesian economics with equations.

The issue is that capital investment is actually the fastest changing variable in the old consumer spending, government spending, and investment (leaving aside imports/exports for a moment.) Consumer and Government spending are slower to react to changes but changes in investment are fast and based on predictions in the probable future.

Crypto isn't any less real than a US dollar with the exception that in the US you have to accept US dollars for payment. Crypto is voluntary money you only accept it if you want to, and since once you have it you can instantly exchange it for whatever else you'd rather have, further that the relative market fluctuations between crypto and what you'd like to have can be built into the crypto transaction, it makes moving toward crypto attractive.

I mean... they'd try? That's where those weird story problems came from (Bob buys 82 bananas... why the hell is someone buying 82 bananas??). But they lacked real world application. 526 Checking-account balances are still 350% of their pre-pandemic level. Of the $5.8 trillion in total Covid stimulus approved by Congress, some $400 billion has yet to be spent. Massive state surpluses have emerged from federal grants. All states combined are sitting on $113 billion in ready cash. Median household real wealth has surged by $27 trillion since the pandemic began, generating a potentially massive wealth effect on consumption.

The producer price index, a key driver of consumer prices, rose 9.7% in 2021, while import prices, usually a moderator of inflation, rose 10.4%. And 75% of the 17% rise in housing costs last year has yet to show up in consumer prices because rental leases cause shelter costs to lag behind increases in housing costs. Shelter costs make up a third of the consumer price index.

There is a lot of money out there.

But, its not exactly "retarded," as you put it. I mean, these people know it can't work. It's just part of the Great American Shell Game. It's not supposed to work. It's supposed to impoverish everyone except for the donor class.

Make sure to get out and vote like your life depends on it!"

554 Given everything that's going on in the economy, how is it possible to justify a massive increase in the omnibus appropriations bill, a new stimulus bill, or the resurrection of Build Back Better?

In a final desperate effort to save Build Back Better and elevate government to the center of American life, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is trying to pitch the Biden economic agenda as "modern supply-side economics." But whereas real supply-side economics creates a private incentive to work, save and invest, Ms. Yellen's approach expands government benefits as a way of "fixing supply-chain bottlenecks" and substitutes "public investment" for private investment.

In virtually every case where Ms. Yellen claims Build Back Better will expand employment and production, experience and logic suggest otherwise. Almost 43% of the first year's cost of the bill is funding the expanded child tax credit with no work requirement. A quartet of University of Chicago economists have concluded the expanded child tax credit would reduce labor supply by 1.5 million workers, just as soaring pandemic transfer payments resulted in 2.5 million workers dropping out of the labor market.

555 446 I know everyone is consistently questioning crypto. But it's this type of monetary destabilization that makes crypto look attractive. Crypto isn't any less real than a US dollar with the exception that in the US you have to accept US dollars for payment. C
-----------------------
Crypto is a store of value, not really a currency per se. Arguably gold or silver could do everything that you propose crypto can do but you can physically hold it. Booze, real estate, etc. are all real items that also serve as a store of value.

Now, the risk for physical assets is seizure by government or thieves (redundant I know) and that is also true for crypto. Pixy's greatest criticism of crypto is that it relies on central servers to conduct transactions so seize/hack those servers--your crypto vanishes. Distributed networking would help but make any conversions slow to process.

608 Right now is a great time to set up multi-tiered pricing based on political affiliation.

You can mention Donald Trump in a neutral way and most conservatives will avoid the subject, but I'm going to estimate 70+ % of liberals can't resist saying something. Then you can simply agree with them, engendering yourself to them, and raise your normal rate by 20-25% and pad your profit margins.

I highly encourage this. We are not in a competitive market, we are in a goods and labor market where people will pay about anyone that will show up and do work. Capitalize on it while you can for the next year or two, and stick it to your political opponents pocket books.

609 I've been single my whole life. I tried to get married but it didn't work out well and I've decided its just best to keep it this way.

I came to this conclusion: people who complain about being married or being single are both right. There are serious drawbacks to either one that do not take much time to work out. And there are benefits to each one that do not take much time to work out. I'm talking personal drawbacks and benefits.

Between the two, speaking strictly from a selfish personal perspective, it appears to be a push: either one is roughly equivalent.

But when you add in society, the future, and Biblical mandate, marriage is by far the superior choice and proper state of humanity wherever possible. Its just not always possible or reasonable for everyone. And the crazier things get... well remember Paul: he advised Christians to probably not get married at that time because of the heinous persecutions and horrors on the horizon.

I've seen a number of couples work at it and become better friends and lovers to each other than ever. 631 Collectively, humanity has both virtues and faults. And as you go down the different divisions of society, sex, religion, etc. you find that same thing--virtues and faults.

But, you don't marry a collective sex classification, you marry an individual. Same as you don't attend a collective religion, you attend a specific church, and so on.

I find this world is a bit easier to navigate and less depressing if one lives in the specifics of your own life and interactions with others rather than trying to apply sweeping generalities to them. Reduction of the analysis to specific people instead of stereotypes also affirms that like it or not, we are all of the Lord's creation and share in varying degrees sins, vices, and virtues.

632 Early on at some airplane companies, before there was even such a thing as engineering or aeronautical engineering. Like the 20s and 30s it was physicists writing out equations of motion and then they had mathematicians from local universities write it out into formulas and those formulas became the computer algorithms in the 50s and 60s. The problem with this, and anybody that had to deal with the fortran code in the 70s and 80s found this out, was that the math majors from the university had no attachment to what was going on and they just saw it all as a matter of bookkeeping. So you ended up with these complex fortran codes with all the variable names being A0001, A00002-A99999. The only way you could make any sense of it was a log that translated the variable codes to the physics. If the log was lost you were screwed. It was a horrible mess that many companies never even got around to fixing. Lots of NASA code ended up like this too.

633 I don't think all Eastern European women are prizes either.

Well when young they are on average stunningly gorgeous, just jaw-dropping, far more than most other places. Its unreal, especially given what drooling knuckle dragging troglodytes many of the young guys are.

But personally and culturally they are a serious mess. They smoke like a coal burning plant, they drink like a fish, they have often been raised with zero moral compass and if they have one its a weird cultic Eastern European church cultural thing (not religious). I'm generalizing heavily here but that's the observation I've made.

Its sad because they have so much to offer in terms of looks but are going overtime to destroy that with their lifestyle of super late nights, heavy drinking, terrible food, and smoking. By the time they hit 30 they look like a sack of potatos.

FWIW, the current IRS treatment of crypto is as property just like gold or silver. 1040 Tax form for 2021 asks specific questions about transactions using cryptocurrency so you have the duty to report any gains or losses involving transactions as part of your income.

Just checked that via IRS official publications to make sure. Simply keeping cryptocurrency in a wallet like gold, silver, real estate, etc. does not require reporting. But, any transaction that results in gain or loss triggers income consequences. In a way, crypto is actually worse for tax purposes because every ledger has the transaction recorded while privately exchanging gold or silver for cash does not. The only supposed safety is that theoretically you are anonymous in many transactions using blockchain.

650 >>>Now, the risk for physical assets is seizure by government or thieves (redundant I know) and that is also true for crypto. Pixy's greatest criticism of crypto is that it relies on central servers to conduct transactions

That isn't quite true. It relies on central servers to do fiat to crypto transactions. Crypto transactions themselves are decentralized and can't be controlled or hacked. The threat of losing an exchange server is real and has happened. That's why you don't leave your money, in whatever form it might be, in an exchange unless trading crypto is what you do.

You
a. Run the transaction.
B. Change the crypto to whatever you want it to be on the exchange.
C. You withdraw your money and put it someplace you can trust if you aren't using crypto that might be an offshore bank.

Follow those rules and the only thing the government can do by attacking exchanges is make it harder to go from crypto to fiat. They can't seize any real portion of your cash.

653 There IS a theory to MMT. But you won't like it.

The theory is this - the modern economy is, at it's heart, highly deflationary. Technology gets faster and cheaper each and every day. That reduces the goods and services needed to generate the things we need. Deflation is bad for the economy. It's especially bad if you owe a shit ton of money like the U.S. government does - in a deflationary economy, those debts just keep getting bigger. In an inflationary economy they get smaller in real terms.

So, the government needs to print excess cash to increase inflation to fight this natural deflation.

The theory may hold some merit, except politicians LOVE spending cash they don't have to tax anyone for, and if they can do a little of that, then a whole lot of that would be even better.

655 "Norms are being restored, if the Norms you mean are the inflation and malaise of 1982."

Why do people insist on comparing this to 82? In 82 the government was roughly only one trillion dollars in debt, We hadn't offshored our jobs, and the country was 90% White. In our wildest fantasies we wish for the conditions that existed in 1982.

Posted by: DFCtomm at February 10, 2022 05:04 PM (OHy0b)

656 The problem with MMT isn't that it doesn't work. The government has been living on printed and borrowed money for decades now, and the world hasn't ended. However, it's primary problem is that it turns relationships on their heads.

In MMT all wealth flows from the government, instead of the economy. The private sector doesn't have to be responsible for anything because the government is in charge of everything. They can scam, cheat and steal all they want and it's fine because they aren't in charge, Daddy is. MMT makes the government their customer not us, and so they don't have to listen to us at all, and they've been waiting to hear that for years.

Posted by: DFCtomm at February 10, 2022 05:13 PM (OHy0b)

657 "MMT makes the government their customer not us, and so they don't have to listen to us at all, and they've been waiting to hear that for years."

The private sector no longer has to listen to the public, and now they've fixed elections so not even the politicians have to listen to the public. You see the trend here? The ruling class of this country is really fucking tired of hearing from the peasants, and they've taken steps to ensure they no longer have to listen to us, or even pretend they do.
