Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Axios: Republicans Don't Think About National Review Any MoreStanding athwart the dustbin of history. Axios spoke to Republican consultants and power-brokers about how power inside the party had shifted post-Trump. Who used to have the power, per those Axios interviewed:Who has the power now: The NRA lost power, I imagine, due purely to its internal political and legal struggles, not because of the party shifting its ideology on the Second Amendment. Heritage, meanwhile, just became yet another corrupt corporate Woke Joke. They discuss the various groups that lost power. Good. Well, I guess I can stop talking about them. I guess even the idiots who run the party have this one figured out. And the National Review? Republicans used to covet the cover of National Review. But after the publication opposed Trump in 2016, every operative we asked told Axios it's become irrelevant in GOP primaries. "Courting the National Review doesn't matter at all," said one with several high-profile GOP primary candidates. "I would argue there's more people who'd be turned off by NR writing positive pieces...."Yup. But let's check in with Politico columnist Rich Lowry. He must be really invested in National Review and the conservative movement to be a columnist for the leftwing groupthink media publication Politico. "I don't know who said that," National Review editor Rich Lowry [squealed girlishly to] Axios, "but I guarantee you if we ran a negative item of any sort on one of his or her clients -- whether a 1,000-word article or a brief comment -- we would hear from that campaign pushing back almost immediately." Lowry [impotently seethed that] he sees "an element of wish-fulfillment in some of these attacks" on National Review: "A fringe wants us gone, so they pretend it's so, when they actually read us as closely as anyone."Oh, a "fringe?" Justin Trudeau was just talking about a fringe. Do you two chat? On the come-up, meanwhile, are Breitbart and Bannon. And the Daily Wire. (Eh.) And Tucker Carlson, of course, who one operative says might be the most influential right-wing pundit he's ever seen. Like many of you, I was beside myself from around 2008 to 2014 as I kept screaming into the wind that the GOP establishment, and its Beta Orbiter grifter class, cannot continue giving the finger to the actual members of the GOP, the actual people who write the checks and cast the votes, every year, always telling us "we'll get around to immigration one day (of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform type only) but in the meantime here's some more favors for the Chamber of Commerce." At some point, we kept saying, there is going to come a reckoning. There is going to be a revolt. The same lies, the same cons, the same hustles, the same grifts, the same excuses, the same scripted failures, the same stage-managed defeats, the same bait-and-switches, the same shuck-and-jives, the same venomous betrayals, the same fulminous scoldings are just not going to work time after time, cycle after cycle, year after year. But the Smart People in the GOP, the Cruise Ship Conservatives, were sure that they would keep working, for ever and ever, and that the long-promised revolt would not, could not, ever, ever happen. Their stranglehold on the party was too tight, and besides, they were the Smart People of the party. What would all the rubes do without them? The rubes wouldn't know what to even think on their own! No, they were indispensable, and being indispensable, they had all the leverage and all the control. As Charles DeGaulle is thought to have said (though it was said earlier), the graveyards are filled with indispensable men. And all the Very Smart People we just couldn't possibly get along without, the ones who were sure that the public would never revolt, and that there would never come an avatar for their reckoning, continue babbling to each other in their every-shrinking huddles, always asking: "Will this month be the month when they all regain their senses and beg us to lead them again? Don't they realize that they need us, The Smart People, the people who have been wrong about literally everything for at least twenty fucking years, to tell them what to think?" "Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket." -- Eric Hoffer, The Temper of Our Time Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

========= This kind of surprises me. Not because I have some high minded view of NR or Republicans, but because the leading from behind conservative prevent defense that NR represents so fully fits with the Republican Party leadership that I didn't think they could ever be split asunder. I imagined Mitch McConnell's staff eagerly awaiting their advanced copies of NR to read about how awesome they're doing and as solace to how, yes, they will retain leadership once the Trump fever passes one day. Meanwhile, the managerial class burned up the last of their social, political, and cultural capital to install Joe Biden, who is an utter disaster. All they had to do (or whoever may have bought it) was just go with that status quo. Even at its best, it still leaned a little left on occasion. I guess they really do think they're taking the moral high ground.

I think the NRA has lost a lot of influence simply because they've won. Won what? Any of the 2A victories we have seen were not spearheaded by the NRA, they just clung to the coattails of whoever was doing the yeoman's work. The NRA can't get help but keep stepping on its own dick. With the massive BOD shakeup they had a couple years ago - all because of Wayne LaPierre and his outrageous spending. Exacerbated now because of their failed chapter 11 filing, the NYS going after them, and funds drying up. Lapierre, a masterful grifter, supposedly needed protection because of threats against his life. So someone lent him their yacht where he and his family conveniently used to attend a wedding in the Carribean. Never declared any of that grift. The only thing the NRA has won (deservedly so) is the unwanted attention and the abandonment of donors/supporters. Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at February 04, 2022 02:26 PM (N39Ws) 153

He hits the nail on the head nearly all the time, plus I love his use of mockery of those in desperate need of it. I do wish libs and swampy repubs would come on the show like they used to when his show first started. They need to be exposed by Tucker's questions that our propaganda media would never ask. I know, some people don't trust him, he was arguably part of the swamp and he wore a bow-tie. I put him in the camp of people whose eyes were finally opened to how thoroughly corrupt the GOP is. On the come-up, meanwhile, are Breitbart and Bannon. And the Daily Wire. (Eh.)
And Tucker Carlson, of course, who one operative says might be the most influential right-wing pundit he's ever seen. ------------- Tucker has, IMO, taken over the leadership from the late, great Rush. He continues to double down, with class and intelligence, every time the corrupt media attacks him. I actually fear for his life, and not some random nutjob. After paying hundreds of millions of dollars and co-opting thousands of people to carry out this criminality, a simple assassination costs peanuts. Steve Bannon - warroom.org - is also a leader, but a different type - he continues to push people to get involved at the local level to make real change. And he continues to piss on the CCP and the US Left (is there a difference, really?) every chance he gets. Along with Gutfeld, who just makes fun of the left, late at night after all those clowns have gone home, are pretty much my political information sources after the Stolen Election and Coverup. Notice I didn't mention FOX, er, FIX news. Until they get the AZ election call reversed, it's as dead as XiNN to me. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at February 04, 2022 02:38 PM (sy5kK) 270

The movement of these parties is a fascinating thing to watch. Infuriating, but fascinating.
It still remains as it's always been, first party to Nationalist Populist wins everything. The GOP seems to be getting dragged that way. The DNC desperately clings to a Corporatist notion that they can somehow keep everything under their control, if only they smartly control all the smart things. They're fools. In the most well armed country in the world with this most access to information, sure, the minority will keep the majority locked down - forever - just by maximal application of minimal force at the key checkpoints. The NRA endorsed Harry Reid against a viable opponent. They were dead to me at that second.
I will take the opposite side of this argument. When the NRA endorsed Reid, they rationalized it by saying that they were a single issue organization and on that single issue, Reid had a pretty decent track record. Which was -- at the time -- true. Unfortunately for them, Reid chose pretty much that exact instant to turn his coat on the 2A. In response, the NRA ceased to be 2A focused and sold out body and soul to the GOPe. IMO, that was the beginning of the end for them as a holder of real political influence. Well, to be fair, its been working since WWII was over.
Sure - because convincing people to act against their own obvious, immediate best interests only works when you skew that evaluation - by showing them a "greater threat". You asked for a miracle ? I give you ... the Cold War (not the FBI). That's what is going on, right now. The current dicks in charge do not, simply do not, have the physical means to lock down the country. So they've got to get us to lock down ourselves. How do they do that ? Fear. Fear of a virus, or climate, or whatever the fear of the week is. And this shit is rolled out like clockwork, on a weekly basis. Posted by: Nome de Plume at February 04, 2022 02:48 PM (oiGnp) 347
Posted by: Oddbob
---------- Their political strategy was coming to an end anyway as the Dems party became concentrated in urban areas and among wealthy donors. Neither of those communities favor gun rights. The first group blame guns for the dead (ignoring the social pathologies that lead to gang bangers shooting each other); the wealthy have never liked gun rights for the masses because they view it as a potential threat to be squashed. They like things like NYC's very strict permitting laws which allows them guns but denies it to the unwashed. Posted by: whig at February 04, 2022 02:48 PM (Iq9dF) 348

So, a NRA meeting ended up with the board deposed and new leadership. Towards what I said about Buckly, right or wrong, I believe that Breitbart was the first new kind of Conservative, Man on the Right in generations. He got so many things right, understood so many things, pointed the way so well. He was a true watershed in history.
Posted by: banana Dream at February 04, 2022 02:27 PM (pnzcV) I never was a big fan of Buckley because I always saw him as an elitist and hostile to 'flyover country' Republicans. I just note that he was hostile to the Goldwater campaign and his biggest claim to fame was going after the John Birch Society in lockstep with the mainstream who had concerns about Communists in government, Judicial overreach by the Warren commission like banning prayer in schools and allowing communists first protection rights. Was he right to do so? Perhaps, but I don't remember him toppling any left wing organization in his life. Posted by: Oldcat at February 04, 2022 02:58 PM (eoQWY) 437
Posted by: Oddbob ___ The problem with that calculation is Reid was terrible on anti-2A judges. So it just doesn't hold water. I had a hard time ever really supporting the NRA after that and I actually do think it's partly why he was able to hang on in Nevada. That and we had a shit candidate to run against him. His single drawback from an idealogical standpoint is that he'll basically agree with whoever he has on the show. One day he's nodding along with Jordan Peterson, the next he's agreeing with some pure leftist twit. The best you can say about Rogan is that he seems to reflect REALITY. And reality trends to the right. So as things are going now, he can't help himself but to continue to be curious about the failures of every leftist institution in the country and why they never accept any responsibility and the media keeps covering for them. USCC came out against Cap & Trade. They sent a black man to testify to Congress and he was called everything but Uncle Tom by black Democrats. San Fran Nan said USCC was funded by Russians. I think the first time Karl Rove used his white board was to write NADA on it, that being the amount of evidence Nan had of that. Rove and the USCC we're well liked and they pissed it all away.

Look at what the Ottawa Police are saying on Twitter and in Press Conferences. They are going full KGB on the truckers "and their supporters." One of the things they do if you've been in a bad auto accident and was knocked unconscious is to check inside your ears for any internal brain hemorrhaging. But first they clean them out with an ice-cold pressurised jet of water. The guy in the emergency-room explained this to me and said that if a person was anyway still alive and conscious they would react to this so it's a good way of checking a person's cognitive state.
"But I'm clearly conscious, I mean we're talking right now." He answers, "Yeah I know". And then hits the jet. I came to understand that he really enjoyed his job. Posted by: banana Dream at February 04, 2022 03:09 PM (pnzcV) 523
