I told her the snow removal and emergency services in that area are in a class of their own, and that cheered her up. I didn't tell her what class, not wishing to upset a Mom.

Mornin', folken,
I'm up a little earlier than I intended, but since I took off yesterday and had a pleasant hour's nap in mid-afternoon, I don't feel worn out. Friday was a good day, with a visit to a local small coffee shop/bakery, and then checking out the local Ollie's Bargain Outlet. Those of you who said it's like Big Lots were right. There were a few good bargains, though not like a Dollar Twenty-Five store. There were name brands like Barbasol and Simoniz, and others I didn't know. Not bad. Today? Got to run out to renew Chekov's Rx for prednisolone. That's how it's spelled on the label. The vet is out, but they say they can write me an Rx and I can go to any other vet shop. I'll need to have them call to make sure the stuff is available. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at January 29, 2022 06:34 AM (c6xtn) 39

I never cared much for shoveling snow. I paid 6 bills for a Toro some years ago, and have to admit I was pretty excited waiting for the first snowstorm. Up bright and early, it was kinda fun. Posted by: Common Tater Agree. I looked at the Greta Approved Battery Snowblowers. Most of them would be okay for a 4 inch snowfall. After that you better have extra batteries or be willing to wait hours for a full charge. I figured the 22 inch snow my small Toro took care of 9 years ago in about 2 hours, it would have taken a battery one about 5 days. Posted by: Bruce at January 29, 2022 07:04 AM (vd8XM) 88

Today, probably more than once, a neighbor will come by with a snowblower to clear the brim left by the plow at the end of the driveway. I shall be forced by common courtesy to thank them. I want to go to bed tonight satisfied, knowing that I cleared the whole thing manually. Nobody will think I am a hero for doing so, and I won't care. I take satisfaction in shoveling. YouTube has a cut from the Dick Cavett show filmed the day after Woodstock. Lots of 60s heavy hitters were there. Stephen Stills in his outlaw Josey Wales poncho blanket plays "4 and 20".
Joni is interviewed, she sounds like a nice nutty lunatic canadian chick. They were re-designing the Canadian flag at the time, and apparently had a contest. David Crosby is a complete twatwaffle. So yeah, mostly hippie delusions. Joni Mitchell has famously refused to quit smoking cigarettes, so it sounds a bit like "I stand with the medical community" is a little ... selective. She's also infamous for freaking out about something she claims to have called "Morgellen's disease" or somesuch, some weird unspecified malady that .. Yeah it's a matter of scale.
How often it snows, how much snow. And the type of snow matters. How large is the driveway, walkway. And are uou retired or does it have to get done right away. I like to use a sweep broom on a lighter dusting. But at some point ... I want power. If you want a return to the "good old days" just turn off the air conditioning. Or the heat. When I lived in Ohio, I had a snow scoop. It was about three feet across with a big double handle. Instead of having to pick up and toss the snow as with a shovel, it was strong enough so I could just push it to the side of the driveway. We had a big driveway and I could get it cleared in an hour. UTC is the solution to Standard/Daylight Savings Time political foolishness. I think the conversion over would be somewhat more successful than trying to go metric. Just express the time in UTC. If enough people would do it, then it would be common practice and no more of this Spring Forward / Fall Back nonsense. Just decide what hours you want to sleep, eat and work, find those markers on the clock and go with it. Would make scheduling meetings a whole lot easier since one doesn't have to rely on the calendar conversions built into the software - just tell everyone spread across six time zones that the meeting is at 1500 hours, let them look at their clock bracelet without the question of whose time zone is being referenced? Posted by: Colin at January 29, 2022 08:09 AM (l07z+) --- There are two reasons for this. The first is that Dems are incredibly tribal because politics has replaced religion. Where their old morals conflict with current Party needs, the morals are changed. So they will always flip if the Party asks it. This is why GOP pointing out hypocrisy to Dems is pointless. They don't care. It is useful to win independents and harden the squishy GOPs, but has zero impact on the Dem Party. The second reason is that they have a malformed idea of masculinity, which is in fact the "toxic" thing they go on about. Coumo, Clinton, the Kennedys, and now Biden exemplify bragging, bullying men who push women around but promise to keep abortion legal. They mistake callous cruelty for strength and have for decades. You can look up the density of hydrocarbons against temperature. The greater density in cold is minor compared with that miracle liquid water. The energy content is also listed in tables of your CRC Handbook. That difference at cold temperatures is also minor, and overwhelmed by the cold containment temperature of cold pipes, etc. The good news is it takes a bit of energy to compress it to a liquid. That energy, from gas to liquid, is gained back when you ignite itl Heavy duty thermo guys can jump in here. I'm a mere synthetic type. I put ridge vents on attic to keep cool and bought a remote thermometer set so I can see the outside temp and the attic temp and see if the vents are adequate. Then realized I can put the thermometers in someones house and show them how hot the attic gets and conducts heat into house.. BIL's house gets to 147 in attic barely 90 outside. They don't realize what effect that has, attic doesn't even cool down overnight.

Very rough figures:
Peak solar isolation with everything optimized is a bit above 1 kW/sq. m In Georgia, due to the weather and panel orientation you get about 4 to 4.5 hours a day average of your peak output so if you have a 2 kW array you get about 8 to 9 kW/hrs a day average. On the average a house in Georgia uses 36 kW/hr a day. Another issue is costs and without tax incentives all on-the-grid green energy is a life cycle loser.
