The Morning Rant: Los Angeles Ports Are Now Handling Less Volume Than Before Biden Announced His Fix
Do you remember three short months ago when President Biden boldly announced a White House plan to fix the bottleneck at Los Angeles County’s two big ports. You’ll never believe what happened next. (Teaser: It got worse.)
White House plan aims to help key West Coast ports stay open 24/7 to ease supply chain bottlenecks (CNBC – 10/13/2021)As supply chain bottlenecks around the world threaten to hobble the U.S. holiday shopping season, President Joe Biden will unveil a plan Wednesday to try to ease West Coast delays at the ports of Long Beach, California, and Los Angeles by expanding round-the-clock operations.So what happened in subsequent months?
Port of Los Angeles Confirms Cargo Dip in November 2021 No. Way. I won’t bore you with all the links, but I’ve put together this little table showing how many TEUs* were handled by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in October 2021, the month when Biden unveiled his plan to fix the bottleneck, and in the two months that followed. (*TEU is an acronym for “Twenty Foot Equivalent,” or one standard 20-foot container.)
• Unit volume for the Port of Los Angeles was 902,644 TEUs in October 2021. November 2021 TEUs of 811,460 and December 2021 TEUs of 786,589 were both significantly lower than in October 2021. • Unit volume for the Port of Long Beach was 789,716 TEUs in October 2021. November 2021 TEUs of 745,488 and December 2021 TEUs of 754,314 were both lower than in October 2021. Not only has unit volume in November and December 2021 decreased from October 2021, but year-over-year volume also declined. November and December 2021 TEUs at both ports were down significantly from the volume recorded one year prior in November and December 2020. Inexplicably, after President Biden unveiled his plan last October, the situation got worse. Almost as inexplicably, the same media that heaped slobbering praise on Biden for “fixing” the backlog has suddenly stopped reporting on the worsening situation at these ports. The supply chain problems go much deeper than the mess at the ports of Los Angeles County, but the fact that Biden’s plan to fix those problems only made them worse bodes poorly for us all. There is an alternative. Did Brandon and Mayor Pete's response to the bottleneck and problems make them worse, or were they merely ineffective? I actually suspect the latter. More important, can the California ports problem even *be* solved through administration policy even if those policies are good? It's a multi-faceted problem. What if nothing you use to push on the problem will work if you're pushing from Washington instead of from Sacramento or Los Angeles?
That's perhaps worse.

Just from the above data, I don't think it is clearly "Fact" the Biden Fixes (not Hunter's) made the problems worse. The other factors that have increased are more shutdowns, perhaps in China, or in the US with the mandates for the Vax on normal workers. General economic slowdown could be another factor.
So there is correlation, but it would be much harder to show direct causation as Fact. (of Biden policies being the cause reduced volume). But idk exactly what those Fixes were ... but it probably involved Hunter getting cash and hookers to get Daddy to do China a favor or ten.

That would only be an issue if there was no longer any backlogs at the LA ports. Instead, they continue to set records for the number of ships waiting to be unloaded, even if it's not as visible from shore since they've been ordered to drop anchor further from the shore.
You could also argue that a drop is expected when comparing October to November or December since because of Thanksgiving and Christmas (and since, in normal years, most goods would be imported well before Thanksgiving). However, that's where the year-to-year numbers are important. The decrease in unloading compared to previous year shows that the nothingness that Biden or Mayor Pete proclaimed certainly did nothing to help the problem. I doubt, however, that they paid enough attention to the logjam to f' it up further.

I can tell you that because as a retired toff who is spending the winter abroad there are no supply chain issues in countries where people are willing to work. Since November I've been in North Macedonia, Turkey, Greece, and now Cambodia. Things seem normalish, except for masks. But all the shelves seem stocked and things are pretty much normal. Because people need to work to eat in these countries, which of course I find foreign and exotic.
But if you live in a country where people don't want to work, and the government seems willing to do it's damndest to keep people from having to work, then you are screwed.

Oy. Try to sell a house that isn't perfect and this really comes out. I went through this a couple of years ago when my folks retired and sold their place. It was expensive but not perfect and we could tell the "HGTV Buyers" from the real buyers after the first couple. The "HGTV Buyers" just want new construction where everything is perfect. The dislocation between being able to afford that in the place they want to live versus the reality just results in paperwork and bad feelings.

Yeah, one the blue state transplants started showing up the house fixes got bigger and much more expensive.
One thing that always bugs me on these shows are that in a lot of the houses toured, you can see that the current owner fixed up the kitchen, bathroom -- not high end, but. . .it's like a renovation scam.
First, the owner is told by the realtor they have to redo these spaces to attract buyers and increase sale price. Typically, not high end, but take it from, say, 70's and 80's to current style. Then the shows with the potential buyer(s) show them, usually the woman, taking a one second glance at the kitchen and exclaiming "this of course has to go!" -- it's an obviously new, if not fancy, redone kitchen and it's going to be trashed immediately.

It's partly rejectionist ideology, part utopian dreamer, part lethargy. You will see inconsistent thought like "The government has covered up alien existence and imprisoned people for using homeopathic treatments, it can't be trusted. But I still think a communist society could work."
It's populated with people like Rogan, Tim Pool, Russel Brand and others. There basic talking point is "I'm not left or right" and they talk all the time about getting along and stopping arguing and stuff that basically appeals to kids that grew up in broken homes where their moms and dads fought all the time. It's flash promise is that we can all stop arguing and then the world will be grand.

Ugh. Yes. And I do not get it. My house was built in the 70s and the last renovation (kitchen) was done, if I had to guess, in the early or mid 90s. It's "dated" as they say, but it's a *very* good kitchen. They did a great job with layout, cabinets are solid wood, drawers are all nicely dovetailed and assembled, the sink is good, etc. On HGTV, this kitchen would be promptly ripped out and replaced with something more "current" or fashionable. But to replace my kitchen with a new one of equivalent quality would be very very expensive.

A few years before my wife and I sold our house, we'd put about 30K into various upgrades/maintenance, but, tried to be strategic where we put the money, for ROE reasons. And it paid off.
Another house in our neighborhood, same floor plan, roughly the same lot, the owners put over 100K into the house, house looked great, but, the market wasn't there to recoup the amount spent on remodeling, plus what was owed and, they took a hit when the house was sold.

What kills me is the HGTV shows ALL push renovation, even perfectly good homes. Like, maybe that cheap house with the not high end but new stuff is affordable and acceptable to a number of potential buyers -- but HGTV is selling us on people with means buying up that house and then throwing $10's or thousands, 100's of dollars even, because the new owner doesn't like the news stuff. Hey, how about you build a new house then, work with a home builder instead of scooping up all the cheap houses and turning them into lil' mcmansions?
