The Morning Rant - Woke Corporate PR Campaigns As Purposeful Distractions From Ugly Problems

You probably heard that M&M’s are going woke. Or more specifically, that there is a PR campaign underway trumpeting the new progressive wokeness of M&Ms.

M and M -1.JPG

M&M characters redesigned for a “more dynamic, progressive” world, Mars announces

Why would the Mars candy company launch a left-wing political campaign around its popular confection when a growing number of Americans are sick and tired of wokeness? Let’s face it, just about the only people left who still actively embrace wokeism are the sustainable, organic scolds who shop at Whole Foods. And they’re not going to buy M&Ms, even if the redesigned green M&M was organic and danced on the American flag while waving a BLM banner in her new “laid back sneakers.”

So why is Mars doing this PR stunt about M&Ms? Stick with me to the end and I’ll show you the probable reason.

When a brand is dealing with a PR nightmare, perhaps due to irreversible consumer rejection of its product, or possibly due to a specific crisis, rolling out a woke ad campaign will get it a lot of love and a lot of free publicity from the same media that might otherwise be reveling in its bad news.

Gillette (Proctor & Gamble) didn’t run its 2019 ad campaign accusing their core customers of being bullies and predators because they thought it would increase sales. They ran that campaign to change the story from Gillette’s prolonged, irreversible market share collapse, and the resulting $8 billion charge-off that P&G was about to incur later that year.

Do you remember last summer when Megan Rapinoe was hired by Victoria’s Secret? She is one of the ugliest people in America, and I’m not talking about her looks. She is widely despised for her serial vulgarity, which includes dancing on the American flag in one victory celebration, and this little gem at a soccer victory parade in New York: “Hide your kids, hide your wife, and lock your f---ing doors. I’m coming for all y’all bitches.”

Rapinoe flag.JPG

Victoria’s Secret was owned by L Brands at the time. What was L Brands thinking? Well, Victoria’s Secret had closed nearly 250 stores in 2020, and in February 2021, parent company L Brands announced that it would permanently close between 30 to 50 more U.S. locations.

Oh by the way, do you know who headed L Brands? Les Wexner, who had close ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Sales were collapsing, stores were closing, and the head of the company had odious ties to Epstein.

Time for some free, favorable PR from the leftist media! Time for Megan Rapinoe!

How about Subway? It was a struggling sandwich chain, with mass store closures and plummeting sales, and still stung by the scandal* of its former pitchman Jared Fogle. [*Look it up if you don’t know the story. I don’t even want to type those words.]

So what did Subway do? They brought in Megan Rapinoe! She might be an awful person from whom you need to hide your wife and kids, but she certainly found her advertising niche – spokesperson for fading companies in the midst of an ongoing PR crisis, and desperately in need of sympathetic coverage from the woke mass media.

The sad part is that unlike Victoria’s Secret stores, Subway stores are franchises owned by individuals. The Rapinoe gimmick caused consumer backlash, hurting the stores even more. Subway franchisees are fed up with Megan Rapinoe’s TV ads (NY Post – 8/06/2021)

So let’s circle back to the Mars candy company and its M&M product. With a decidedly non-woke customer base, and little hope of getting wokesters to buy its chocolate, what might be the motivation for a woke PR campaign?

Oh.

Nestle, Mars and Hersey accused of ‘using child labour to get cheap cocoa’ in new court papers (Independent – 11/01/2021)

Most companies do not want their names used in connection with African slave labor, so headlines like this have got to sting.

Mars, Nestlé and Hershey to face child slavery lawsuit in US

M and M - 2.JPG

The good news for Big Chocolate is that the Supreme Court recently ruled that US courts are not the venue for lawsuits about the use of African child slave labor, but the rejection of the United States as the venue does not refute the awful allegations.

The woke M&M campaign now makes perfect sense, and it’s working too. The media is already gushing over the progressive image makeover of M&Ms.

And if this doesn’t fully inoculate Mars/M&M from bad press, they have one more card they can play. They can bring in Megan Rapinoe as their new spokesperson.

16 The book "Woke Inc" goes into great detail about the reasons companies go woke. And yeah, most of the time it's to placate the left to keep them from pointing out the companies' various atrocities. I highly recommend the book.

20 Two years ago I mentioned here that commercials were using black actors to portray stereotypical white roles and it was more than half of the commercials. Today 9/10 of corporate commercials follow this pattern and 10/10 follow the wokeness pattern. It's gotten so over the top it's now become a joke.

I don't buy the thesis in this particular case. Jared Fogle is ancient history. It no longer matters. Any damage to Subway's brand caused by that predator is long since finished. Subway does have other problems, though - like its poor quality and their back-off from the value marketing (the "$5 foot-long") and price increases. Go-woke-as-a-distraction may well be the reason they did, but I seriously doubt it's related to Jared Fogle and it's more likely related to low quality and rising price.

I think the key is that the execs actually do not care one bit about whether the company does well financially; they care about the Press Releases which mention them personally. If they get good Press Releases, they can vote themselves Big Bonuses. Then they can buy a nice Caribbean getaway villa and be long gone by the time it all comes crashing down.

Large companies use large ad agencies in places like San Francisco will 20-something year old creative type that are obsessed with these issues and since they are in charge of the marketing campaign, this type of shit happens.

I don't really think its that strategic from the top down.

When Target "tweeted" the changing rooms would all be unisex, the CEO actually stated it was not his decision and that it was some underling that gobe beyond their skis. But then, these woke activists know the companies can't back pedal and are painted into a corner.

72 Distraction and rationalization due to brand problems may be the reason for the out-of-the-blue hyper-woke sudden campaign like Mars or Victoria's Secret, but it doesn't explain the constant low-level wokeness everywhere all the time. It doesn't explain why so many TV commercial couples are gay or interracial or trans. It doesn't explain the man-as-doofus theme in virtually every ad. It doesn't explain the constant grrrrl power themes.

The constant low-level wokeness has a different explanation, and it's likely because Madison Avenue - like your company's HR department - is full of well-indoctrinated college graduates from the soft studies, primarily women, of below-average intelligence and above-average ideological commitment. This is their default operating mode, and it permeates everything they do.

81 The libertarian Science Fiction writer Sarah Hoyt talks about the strategy 'roll left and die.' If a person, institution, company is failing and about to get fired/bad news/bankrupt, a strategy is to immediately veer hard left.
This sets you up to claim martyrdom for your idealistic social views, changes your image from (failed whatever) to brave fierce social justice warrior, and sets you up for your next career as a politicized activist.
It looks the same for companies too, trying to change the narrative and claim noble ideals instead of business bad news.

See Hoyt's excellent essay:

82 Why would the Mars candy company launch a left-wing political campaign around its popular confection when a growing number of Americans are sick and tired of wokeness?

Because a few people at the top, who got there not because they knew a damn thing about making or selling candy, got another stupid idea. And all the people at the bottom don't care as long as the checks clear the bank.

That's all it is.

85 I think a lot of this is also a payoff system for rewarding those on the left who stuck their necks out to progress the Marxist agenda. Rapinoe did it and the is being rewarded by the elites. Nicole Hanna Jones is getting some filthy lucre for her efforts from the president of the university of Wisconsin (55k for a speech). The left makes sure their activists are rewarded and their thugs are protected, and that everyone knows it to encourage more of the same.

86 So, is the "wokeness" thing due to aging hippies that have become suit wearing CEO's letting their freak flags fly or is it 30-somethings entering the workforce and pushing their wokeness on the corporate infrastructure?

The answer to that question is the key to all this. One has staying power, the other doesn't.

In either case the businesses are currently hemorrhaging money and customers.

Having lived that in a former life - they ALWAYS defer to the new young turks. And this line of thinking that somehow the fresh faces can "connect" with Joe Consumer hasn't changed for 70 years. What blows me away is all the rules *did* go out the window. I watched the movie, "The Mitchells versus The Machines" with gKids earlier this week. It was definitely entertaining and funny numerous times. The story wraps up with the late teens heroine going off to art (?) school on the West Coast. A call home to Mom after she was there brought out that heroine was gay (as in, "Will you bring Jade (the gf) home to meet us at Thanksgiving?").

Now, the heroine's chosen sexuality had no bearing on the story prior to that point, nor did it matter even then because the movie was near its end. So what was the friggin' point of even bringing up the subject? The seemingly perpetual pandering is all so tirelessly stupid.

Artificial crab is very common and has been for a long time. Crab is expensive and flavorless white fish is not. It's not representative of America, it's representative of what they want America to look like. Also fun to see how long it takes to introduce the actual product. 157 Two points here

1) I assume at this point that most multi-national mega corps are using child/slave labor. We've gone from Will Wilberforce to...well if it makes my iPhone cheaper SLAVERY IS AWESOME!

2) When it comes to PR campaigns you also have to consider the individuals involved verses the company as a whole. So, perhaps some woke commercial will reduce sales. Bad for the company. But if it gets the people running the ad positive exposure in woke circles it might still get them a better job and more money in their next role.

Because the share prices are fine in most cases. Go as woke as you want and it doesn't matter to the share price. QE and institutional investors will keep it climbing.

Once QE tapers off, fundamentals might matter again - but it will be blamed (rightly, at least in part) on the money spigots being turned off rather than the ultra-shitty balance sheets most companies have and the declining sales a lot of them face.

Hence - no shareholder gives a shit about anything other than stock price. There is no motive to increase anything other than stock price - in order to sell it to the next sucker.

Ursula Le Guin wrote a story about a traveler that comes to a perfect society. Everyone is prosperous and lives in peace and harmony.

But, the traveler finds out that this society only exists because they keep one child in permanent pain and misery.

The point of the story, I suppose, is a rejection of pure utilitarianism. Certainly the expectation is people will not see the society as a good thing.

But looking at modern Woke America, can anyone disagree modern America's answer would be "if we degrade the kid more can we get more stuff?!?"

The Mayo Clinic says otherwise.

See this is why medicine is an art and not a science. Because there are differences of opinion and differences of performances because every person's body is different than everyone else's. the differences are small but do matter in some ways.

And it's the drs intuition that provides the necessary decision tree to a cure. Not a mathematical arrival at a guaranteed solution/cure.

354 Nice!

This supports what I've been saying for a while. As usual, #conservatives get things backwards. It's not - Get Woke, go broke!

It's actually - Going broke? Get woke!

In nearly every instance, Wokeness creeps in because sales, subscriptions, or attention is waning. Companies that are doing good business don't rush to capture a tiny 2% niche market. They do stuff like this when they're already hurting and desperate - or perhaps to distract, but I bet if we knew what was going on deep in the Accounting Dept. of Mars, we'd find a company on the verge of layoffs and closings.

355 Knowing that child "slave" labor is being used as some sort of reason to not buy a product is something we used to be able to do a generation ago. It was a naive luxury.

Now, under a tyranny that says No-Vax No Life, at least the slaves aren't cut off from participating in economic life. The sweat that is stolen from them is just a different degree from the sweat that is stolen from highly taxed and regulated wage slaves.

But this woke crap must be dealt with. I greatly appreciate the tight correlation of Woke Advertising to the shortability of the stock. The more smash-mouth in your face perversion they market, the harder a person should bet against the company. Not just because of the backlash, but that it appears that Woke PR is a lagging indicator of the company's vitality and economic performance.

And so they stop doing stuff and being with people that make them feel bad and useless. And so they stop reading, stop trying to achieve anything. Although the internet was pretty fledgling still, so it was a pretty small audience that recognized it. That was pretty brave of Quiznos, and although it attracted attention - I don't think it helped any.

We are woefully uninformed just how many vitamins, minerals, plants, etc. work primarily because there is not the profit motive to do the expensive research necessarily because they are over the counter. So, much of the evidence is stuck at the anecdotal.

Older doctors knew this but good ones were more or less experimental scientists that relied less on drugs and more on treating the person.

420 I saw an interesting article on Vitamin D. For decades doctors have prescribed Vitamin D for heart patients, yet taking Vitamin D did very little to help them.

Study-after-study demonstrated that people with high levels of Vitamin D had very low instances of heart problems. Clearly, there was some kind of correlation here, but nobody could figure it out.

Then, somebody accidentally figured out that when your body naturally makes Vitamin D in the sunlight, it ALSO produces a hormone that tells your heart muscle tissue to "relax". So, there was a correlation, yet zero causation.

They took a look at bombers that had made it back to base to see where most of the bullet holes were, and they were focused on armoring up those areas of the plane.

Then, and engineer pointed out - these were the planes that made it back. Those places that are full of bullet holes? Those are the places you can shoot these planes and it won't take them down. We should be focused on the areas that don't have holes and improve the armor there. Smart dude. That's called "second order thinking", and it's fucking rare.

505 Extremely late to the thread here, but reading this, corporations' solution to their financial problems - go woke - seems completely illogical.

A more logical solution would be to:

(1) Tell the woke bullies to go pound sand
(2) Cater your product and advertising of your product 100% to your customer base
(3) Profit!

By instead catering their product 100% to the woke bullies who do not buy the product, they end up *maybe* appeasing the woke bullies but *for certain* pissing off the very people who buy - or would buy - their product.

Chick-fil-A is the benchmark for how to deal with woke bullies and succeed. You tell them to pound sand and you not only make your customer base happy, you increase your customer base with all the good publicity you get for telling the woke bullies to pound sand.
