The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Any time I see an article that isn't gnashing its teeth over the evils of guns I am pleased. And apparently lots of people are buying guns, which also pleases me. The problem is that while those numbers look impressive, there are no comparisons other than the supposed increase in the number of Black Americans who bought guns last year.

And how do they know that all of these folks are first-time buyers? There is no question on the 4471 4473 (oops!) form asking that, so they are just assuming from the number of first-time background checks...I guess. Some of these people might have inherited guns, some might have guns of unknown provenance, etc. The data apparently come from the National Shooting Sports Federation, based on surveys.

Oh. Okay. I am sure those are accurate.

5.4M first-time gun buyers, 33% women, blacks up 44%

First-time gun buyers continued to flood into firearms stores last year, broadening the once male and white market with women, blacks, Asians, and Hispanics.

Retailers reported that concerns about safety helped to drive 5.4 million first-timers into gun stores where many bought more than one gun, and a sizable number also signed up for gun handling classes.

I think any rational person with passing familiarity of the difficulty of buying guns over the last couple of years will make the reasonable assumption that there are more buyers. Sure, the Wuhan flu nonsense could have shrunk manufacturing capacity so that there is a shortage but no increased sales, although that seems unlikely.

But extrapolating from a survey done by a trade group is filled with uncertainty, just like some other important information like Covid deaths and vaccine safety and so on.

An anecdotal report in support of what many of us believe to be true is just that...a report. It isn't fact, and in many cases it can't even be used in support of a data-driven analysis.

It's so tempting to dismiss anti-gun or pro-vaccine-mandate data and embrace pro-gun and pro-freedom studies. But the best plan is to look at all of it with a jaundiced eye. Suspect everything, check the underlying data, assume there has been manipulation, and then make an informed decision.

Let the progressives play fast and loose with reality. Just listen to their blue-state nonsense that it is the red state's fault? Huh? That makes no sense! The vaccine is almost worthless against the current variants! And don't get me started about how breakthrough infections are supposedly different than infections in the unvaccinated or in people who have recovered from Covid...if that even happens.

But downplaying the reality that Covid can be a serious illness is just as silly. And claiming that the vaccines are killing millions is as bad.

Reality-based discourse for the win!

But that is the essense of true science: look at ALL the data, and that can be difficult when government favors one kind of answer and will only supply money for grants that study with that answer in mind, and those that are the gatekeepers of those studies are in the pay of the gov't.

Even my parents, who are terrified of guns, were talking about buying one. (They didn't and that's probably just as well). But the fact that they even mentally made the jump that they, and only they, are responsible for their safety is huge.

Carve that in stone. The only adjustment I can think of is that one should then "*try* to make an informed decision." If the data set is sufficiently corrupt and unreliable (and many data sets are), it comes down to guesswork at that point. This is, I suppose, where philosophy and morality enter into it. If you can't make an informed decision, make a decision as guided by your conscience.

However, the one I choose is the one given to the Chinese army. This is best, #1 King Dragon Buffet All You Can Eat Delicious Vaccine!

105 I don't much care what people publish in terms of numbers when it comes to guns. I've done my own research and I trust my data points. For my part, I only have anecdotal evidence and real-world experience.

Summer of 2020 while Trump fiddled in the Middle East and America burned, I took several women to the local gun range. My wife works with a primarily female workforce, and most of those are "liberals". But they live near downtown St. Louis, so you can imagine they were getting mugged by reality pretty hard.

The wife mostly keeps her politics to herself at work, but she's open about my crazy right-wing beliefs, and let her friends know I was a gun guy. Suddenly, during the BLM-Antifa ramp up, all these liberal white women wanted to learn to shoot and get some hands-on experience before purchasing their first guns.

I've got a couple of Rugers - a 0.380 and 9 mm - and a whole bunch of ARs in various configurations. The ladies loved them.

119 At the same time I was taking all these extra trips to the range, I noticed a LOT of black families at the gun range. This was significant for a couple reasons. First, we're about 50 miles west of St. Louis. It's a relatively rural area, relatively affluent, and primarily white. I'd seen a couple young black guys up there infrequently, but suddenly, I see dad, mom, and 2 or 3 kids up there - all taking turns with a pistol. I thought that was pretty amazing.

There's a zillion of them, just go to youtube. You might actually learn more looking up a video on how to switch out your slide. I bought a 19 because it's like an F150 truck. I should be able to pluck plenty of parts and magazines off of the cadavers once the burning times come.

About the only tricky part is releasing the slide. I've replaced my slide, spring, barrel etc - but haven't gone hog wild on having them stipple the frame. I just put some grip wrap on. Glocks have the ergonomics of a 2x4.

I'm working on my 7th lower right now for my first AR-9. My motivation is low, on account of the loss of the job and the price of a new handguard and muzzle device, so it's only half-finished in the jig. But I strongly encourage others to look into picking up a jig and the tools to DIY it in your own garage. It's extremely rewarding, and not that difficult. 174 "... downplaying the reality that Covid can be a serious illness is just as silly. And claiming that the vaccines are killing millions is as bad. Reality-based discourse for the win!"

The most exaggerated claims may be floated by covert propagandists, in order to make the serious but not overblown claims seems like "conspiracy theory".

It seems very true that a half million may have been killed by withholding early treatment, and the intent was to get Emergency Status for the vaccines (not allowed if there are other effective treatments)

Also JJ linked to the article on the incredible number of deaths in the 18-64 group, like ten times what would already be a once in 100 year statistic. And specifically the myocarditis or other issues that could be related to "the clot shot" should not be ignored.

It is all too feasible that this was a bioweapon used against US, and the response (shutdowns, school closure, as well as the jab for young healthy people) was more deadly than the virus itself.

192 I read the local police blotter regularly.

Lots and lots of "driving while barred", no license, no registration, stolen cars, DUI, etc. No insurance isn't a regular charge unless perhaps actual damage or injury. It strains credulity to suggest out of the myriad laws being broken, these people are scrupulously maintaining their insurance whilst driving around with a half pound of meth at ine in the morning, tail light out, and a 9 mm glock with the serial number scratched off.

In short, it's all BS. Every bit of it. The people causing trouble don't follow the laws we have now, and they don't plan to start.

It's also telling they are going to require "gun insurance" when they've previously outlawed it. So which is it?

They want to require something they won't let you have?

CA is an anomaly. Here, if you want a decent firearm - it's off roster. Most of the CA legal guns are a joke. So, off roster are what most people buy. LEO etc. can buy any fucking gun they want. They buy say, a CZ Shadow 2, run a couple of boxes through it (if they want) and then turn around and sell it for 2x the street price you can get it elsewhere. If a gun is off roster and in good condition, you can ALWAYS sell it for more than MSRP. A lot more. Everybody leaving the state sells their guns, so they can by 2x as many once they go to AZ or TX or any other sane state.

LOL! No doubt somebody wound up with it - too bad it wasn't your dad. My step dad was Naval Intel Commander and then CIA, so he could literally skirt customs, all the way up until the late 80's. He didn't go overboard, but I know a couple of his buddies did.

I'm sorry, clutch cargo. That sucks, man. I know a guy who was not close at all with his father, but he inherited his Dad's gun collection when he died. He had to go deal with it out of state and when he came back, he was pretty rough emotionally for a couple weeks. He finally told me that it was finding his Dad's notebook where he kept an inventory of all his guns - where and when he bought them, the serial number, etc. It brought back all these memories for him and suddenly he regretted that they'd gotten so far apart in his last years.

I'm sure this has changed a bit, but in the 1990s the Alan Guttmacher Institute determined that 90% of women who got abortions didn't want them but felt they had no choice. PP has been exploiting that knowledge to maximize their abortions.

271 Clutch's comment got me thinking about a 160 year old gun I was recently gifted by my father-in-law. Apparently, he got it when his brother-in-law died. It was handed down to him from his father.

It's a 1860 Belgium. It actually has the word "ZULU" stamped in the top of the barrel. It would have started its life as a muzzle-loading rifle at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. Due to the proliferation of breech loaders at the time, a couple manufacturers were stuck with thousands they could not unload. They were converted to breech-loaders, but would still not sell.

Finally, they cut the barrels down, replaced the full stock with half stocks, and bored out the rifling, turning them into unrifled 12 ga shotguns. Most were sold into North Africa to help the Zulus harass the Brits, but many made it here into the hands of Indians.

This one has an interesting circle in the middle of the stock. Amish would get them, drill a hole in the stock, pour holy water in and have the gun blessed by a priest, and fill the hole in with wax. Few survive with the wax in place, but mine has it.

Nobody I read says Covid isn't serious. I happen to know several people, young and old, who are dead from either the disease (Covid) or the cure (jab.)

Nobody I read says millions are dead. They say thousands are dead. I personally know of more people dead in the last 12 months than the last 12 years.

Once they get the politicians to force the vaxxine onto little kids' school vaccination schedules it will limit lifetime damages to around $30K (thirty thousand) payouts, and then they can release the name brand medicine.

Doesn't quite work that way irongrampa. This is a particular area of study of mine and I used to do big database analysis and database construction.

First of all, 4473 are paper and retained by the retailer--the information called in ( or not in many states if you have a permit) does not include serial numbers etc. Second, even the ATF admits itself, that gun tracing rarely works and the prosecutions based on those are extremely rare. The reason is that most states allow private sales/trades/gifts as long as those are not to ineligible people. Even the nation of Canada abandoned a long gun registry simply because it was inaccurate, did not help 'solve' crimes, and many people simply transacted off the books.

Tracing works best with new firearms where it goes from mfg to wholesaler to retailer who then sells to a consumer.

349 From time to time someone will sue BATF for creating a gun registry. They will win the case, ATF says "OK, we'll stop." Nobody loses his job or is punished in any way. ATF doesn't stop or only stops briefly and goes right back to it. Rinse. Repeat.

----------

Another ATF tactic is to arrest and charge someone with a crime, take it to a trial and then drop the charges and get the trial dismissed when it looks like they'll lose. The whole "no vertical 90 deg hand grips" is a great example. Some nutter welded a vertical grip onto a pistol and they tried him, but ended up dropping the case.

A lot of "regulations" really come in the form of "opinion letters". So, right now, many AR builders won't put a vertical grip on their gun due to a letter specifying 90 deg grips are no-nos. Thus, BCM sells a grip designed at 85 deg.

Same crap with SBRs, pistol braces, solvent traps as silencers, etc. At this point, I've decided I don't care anymore, especially with the support of my state. I'll do as I please and the feds can come and try to enforce in person. Best of luck to all involved.

405 CBD,
I am aware of that--they go to Martinsburg WVA warehouse and are not stored in very good conditions. This is not to say that they are not trying to OCR them for data records for tracing but given handwriting, OCR is not that great at actually deciphering data accurately. Ditto for other data errors propagated--e.g. serial numbers mistranscribed, some firearms legally do not have serial numbers like old shotguns and rifles, makes and model are often screwed up by guessing, and so on.

It would be far easier to simply use open source data via magazine subscriptions, delivery of firearm related goods, cc information, social media, forum members, traffic analysis, email lists, etc. to determine who has firearms. FWIW, it is always easier to use digital information than analog converted to digital due to data issues.

414 My workplace sent an email a couple days ago. Apparently they got tired of wondering if senile Joe's EO for federal contractors would stand or not. So their decision is to just mandate on their own accord, effective Mar 1st.

So much for the excuse of "well legal told them we have to follow this mandate" that was blathered last fall. Funding has become a mix of grants and 'contracts' with fed agencies but the vaccine was the first instance of them deciding they had to follow rules for federal contractors.

I already put in and got an exemption last year based on the assumption that Joe's EO would be effective Dec 1st, but arrghhhh. What a flimsy excuse for them to decide they get to impose healthcare decisions on employees. I flail and fail sometimes with 'grownup stuff' but I still don't want HR acting as a defacto parent for my 29 year old self.

You are correct and most likely any such serialized receivers that Austin PD got were not properly marked disposed of in formal records. Police are relatively lax on such matters compared with gunsmiths for example. Successful tracing percentages drop off each year since the firearm was mfg and sold as new. It is easier to track firearm owners than particular firearms due to 3rd party data tools well within fedgov's grasp.

I'm not a fan. Honestly, after watching people fail hard at controlling recoils on full-autos at my local range (you can rent several for $30 a magazine), and thinking about the economics of ripping through 30 rounds in 3 seconds, I'm over any excitement at the idea of running anything that comes close to full-auto, or even 3 round burst fire.

If you have comorbidites, covid is dangerous. If you are a male in your 20s or teens, the vaccine is dangerous. If you think over arching, one medicine for everyone is sensible, you are not following the data. The data is different for different people.

486 >the supposed increase in the number of Black Americans who bought guns

Remember: when you write "black" with a capital "B", what you MEAN is "N'gger".

You're setting them apart. Distinguishing them. Making it clear that they are different from "ordinary people". And in so doing, you make the reader dwell, consciously or unconsciously, on all the readily-observable characteristics that are associated with this one particular group and that also separate it out from ordinary people.

Things like 13-52. 13% of the population, 52% of the crime.

Things like rap. And bling. And gang violence. And fatherlessness. And ebonics. And dramatically less self-control or future orientation or respect for law.

And the reader, with all these unconscious associations reinforced by your deliberate segregation of that exact same group, reads "black" with a capital "B" and thinks:

"N'gger."
