86 Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded here and there, now and then are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as bad luck.

I think that King Soopers bought City Market, then Kroger bought King Soopers. Kroger's normal activity to enter a new market is to buy up a local or regional player and integrate them. They keep the names and brand reputation and even relabel their generics to that brand unless there's a shortage (King Soopers brand bottled water, for example).

Kroger owns King Soopers (CO), Fred Meyer (PNW), Ralph's (CA), etc.

Not that I'm aware of. Their store-brand manufacturing is mostly US-based (other than apparel). Most of their stock is owned institutionally and some of them are bad actors (like Blackrock) but I don't see any obvious sovereign funds on the list. They're still a mega-corp and all-in on most things that mega-corps tend to be all-in on.

Kroger is asshoe, but they appear to largely be domestic variety.

I just know that word stuck out to me from the song, and indeed it's in the lyrics. Here they are. The lyrics are spoken in the song. Not a bad tune.

"Now, Ronnie Van Zant wasn't from Alabama, he was from Florida, he was a huge Neil Young fan but in the tradition of Merle Haggard writing Okie From Muskogee to tell his dad's point of view on the hippies in Vietnam, Ronnie felt that the other side of the story should be told. Neil Young always claimed that Sweet Home Alabama was one of his favorite songs and legend has it that he was an honorary pallbearer at Ronnie's funeral, such is the duality of the southern thing."

377 There are still IGA's in West Virginia.

Here in the Bluegrass it's mostly Kroger's. There are two Aldi's around, a Walmart Neighborhood Market, Walmart with the grocery section, a Meijer's and in our little town, a small joint called "Cash Savers." Plus a bunch of smaller mom and pop joints that sell day old, or nearly expired stuff.

I understand Dollar General is opening a "food only" store too.

The guys/gals sitting in the booths checking your passports. I came *this* close to asking the nice young (but seemingly a bit clueless) Asian-American officer checking my papers WTF with the gunz?, but I was distracted by another appalling, infuriating thing going on.

A supervisor was walking a green-card-holder spouse over to her American citizen husband at one of the booths, *apologizing* for "separating" them. A sign outside the hall - as with most int'l arrival halls the world over - had "US Citizens" one way, "Everybody else" (whatever) another way.

This f***ing CBP supervisor was f***ing apologizing for "separating" them. I overheard him explaining - "you know, this stuff at the border" - referring to the absurd non-troversy of separating illegally entering adults from minors whose relationship cannot be determined. "Kids in cages" idiocy. Five minutes back in the US, in Trump US, and I wanted to leave.

461 We don't have any Kroger stores here. They were all over the place in Lafayette, LA, in the '70s, but most places I've lived don't have them. I think the King Soopers chain in CO is part of the same company, though.

Here in Arizona, they own the Fry's chain.

Did the same thing in Paris back in the 80's. I was sure I was getting ripped off, but I had no idea how to do anything with those damn machines. I didn't get ripped off, i paid a tax for being stupid.

465 So the FDA (not political I know) is shutting down the monoclonal antibody treatments in Florida. They claim it was not mean to be used and is not effective against new covid variants.

Youngest sibling (who tool the shot) got covid again and had been fighting it for three weeks. Not getting better went ahead and took the monoclonal treatment. In her own words she felt "100% better within 24hours".

You know, I *really* like this idea. As long as it's the Karens doing the driving and darting.

472 A bum in San Diego asked where I was from. I said New Orleans and he bet me $5 he could tell me where I got my shoes. (That's a historical French Quarter gag.)

Is there some kind of bum networking convention? FYI, if you're going to homeless, San Diego is the place to do it.

It sounds like "let them eat cake", which is the main objection (and very on-brand for Psaki).

475 Chilis has Margaritas, lol. If that is elite then we need a redefinition of the word.

477 I just know that word stuck out to me from the song, and indeed it's in the lyrics.

Did that band do a similar sort of speech within a song about George Wallace, too? I remember hearing one like that, and the "voice" sounded similar.
