A Texas woman is now out on bond after sheriff’s deputies said she tried to purchase another woman’s child while waiting in a checkout line at Walmart. According to a report from KSAT’s sister station KPRC, Rebecca Taylor, 49, came up to the woman’s shopping cart in the checkout line. The woman’s cart had two children inside at the time. Taylor started to make comments about one of the woman’s two children before allegedly asking if she could buy him for $250,000, KPRC reports. The mother refused her offer and Taylor pressed further. She increased the offer to $500,000 and allegedly threatened to take the infant, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said the mother still refused and was able to leave the store with her children safely. That’s when she notified authorities of what happened.

Actually, it's perfectly normal to put our forces under operational control of our allies during exercises and whatnot. They haven't left the overall control of US command, just the operational commander is going to determine where they fit in his theater of operations.

I've got Windows time service tweaked here and it's keeping system to within 30ms of UTC(NIST) now. Windows stinks about time syncing by default, but it can be improved.
Most Linux systems can do at least that good by default right out of the box. But they can be improved as well.

Not if you are in Chicago. My favorite scraper was a quarter inch bit of acrylic with a beveled edge, bent in the front to hit at an angle. You could chip at solid glaze ice using it like a hammer, then swipe it all off. Never even close to breaking . Wasn't that expensive but worth it.

Those Teslas have heat pumps for heat. Resistance heat right off the battery would be too much of drain. So they figured they'd use a heat pump. Apparently that failed on a bunch in very cold weather.

The '96 to '98 Camrys were the most stolen car, because any shaved down key would work. I once walked out of a store and got in the wrong brown Camry, and my key worked ... fortunately the seat was adjusted wrong or I might have driven off.

Something salient from earlier in the day -
In July, there was a kerfluffle over a new Alzheimer's drug that would remove the amyloid plaques from the brain. A dysfunction in the brain's ability to remove amyloids is thought to cause alzheimers.
The FDA advisory panel unanimously declined to recommend the drug for approval because although it did remove the plaques, there was no improvement in cognition.
The FDA approved the drug, but advised further studies to show efficacy. This was so controversial that 3 members of the advisory committee quit.
Theory: the fda was pressured to approve the drug so they could use it on FJB.

I think that's the point of the separate discussions with the French and Germans - admitting a new NATO member requires unanimity, so if both the French and the Germans pledge not to admit Ukraine, it doesn't matter what Washington thinks.

As for dishwashers, unless you are paying up, they seem like disposables these days. Name brands used to mean something back in the day. Now you need to research and figure out where it was made. For washer/dryers, I would go with Speed Queen. Made in USA and they do make retail versions, you can get them from Amazon There is a reason every laundromat uses them

Well, I am in Apache Junction right now, and that same sort of weathered granite is all around here. Not so much dessicated as weathered. Some of the minerals making up the original granite have turned to clay under the influence of subtropical rainfall, breaking the intercrystalline bonds, and making it crumbly. The dirt in my yard is mostly just weathered granite, and it is sort of pink, from all the pink potassium feldspar grains.
So, I am reading that the Dana Model 44A rear axles in '87 Grand Cherokees are junk. Any insight?

I stopped actively listening to U2 circa 1986. They were still a "rock" band back then. An interview that clued me in that they weren't any longer for me included the assertion that "The record companies want us to be the next The Who--we're not interested in that".
God forbid any record company encourage a band to be a mega world wide entity.
They became one anyway, but not in a way that I enjoy sonically. There's no "grit" to what they've done in the last 30 years.

From what I understand, we keep training the virus to evade different parts of the immunity (Delta evaded vaccine immunity, natural immunity still mostly held), till it eventually evades natural immunity, and no guarantee it then is still milder ... it could become more deadly. (so especially, don't vaccinate against mild Omicron)

Well, this is the 44A. It has an aluminum housing. The old cast iron Model 44's that were used by nearly everybody at one time were very stout.
And I drained the transfer case. Oil was black, but no filings in it. It's a New Venture 249. But there is a block of plastic, presumably a chain guide, floating around loose on the bottom of the case. Weird.
And I mistyped. '97 Grand cherokee, not '87.

Well, the Jeep site I read earlier says the 44A with the aluminum housing is the black sheep of the flock. They spec'ed too much preload on the carrier bearings, and early failure was a result. I suspect this is the noise I am hearing.
Yeah, I was thinking of 31" tires. And a modest chassis lift. My buddy has a '95 Grand Cherokee parts vehicle. I think I will snag both the transfer case, and model 35 axle from it (assuming the same axle ratio). If it's not the same ratio, then a master rebuild kit for the 44A would be the next best option, I guess.

I don't know what those tree are but I will disagree that they are larch. Larch (Tamarack) turn a bright beautiful golden yellow in the fall, but by late November they have dropped their needles and look like skeletons. They look like some type of spruce based on their shape and the thick branches but I really don't know.

Fun fact: Hank Patterson, the actor who played Mr. Ziffel was in his late '70s during Green Acres. His hearing got so bad he couldn't hear the cues.

Green Acres was one of the funniest, and indeed most sophisticated comedy shows of all time. Yes, sophisticated. CBS axed it during the infamous "rural purge".
The surreality of it was just perfection. "Newhart", Bob's second show came close to achieving that level.

If you don't have an ice scrapper just start your car and use the defrost feature as well as the rear defrost. SMH.
I've owned more than one car in my southern yoot that had either a bypassed heater core or no blower motor, and rear defrost systems were the height of luxury. Fortunately, we also rarely saw frosted windows.
When I moved from IL, I gave away my snow shovels and ice scrapers.

Speaking of the surreal, has anyone here had a shower head blow out on you? Saturday night, I was taking a shower, in our walk-in shower, with a big ol' head. I was just getting started, with my back turned, getting all wetted down, when I heard a big pop.
Then less, water spray, and the sound of water pouring and hitting the tile floor. Turned around and the damn thing had popped apart. I just fixed it tonight.
It's sort of a clam-shell thing, Moen, el-cheapo plastic. The shell thing threads together, with plastic threads screwing. Water pressure (and there isn't too much pressure, we're on a well) caused the thing to just pop, sideways off the threads. Sort of like it cross threaded. Damndest thing I ever saw.

It would not unscrew all the way to take apart because it had popped off sideways like it was cross-threaded. So I had to just pry it apart. Didn't seem to do any damage, so I cleaned everything up and put it back together.
I suspect it will do it again one of these days, and I'll just a get a better quality one.

I actually think those trees may be dead. They are not Larch. Larch turn gold in fall but drop their needles by mid November. Beatle kill can be quick and leave a dead tree standing with red needles in a very short time frame. I lose Grand Fir trees every year and the mature ones will hold the dead needles for up to a year.

I picked one up and a pro smoker-chef good neighbor was kind enough to cook it up for me. Good eating, and sammiches from now until spring. For an added treat, black beans (cooked down w/sauteed onions and green peppers and a bay leaf) to be cooked up later today as a perfect side dish.

I'd never heard that live version of the Ventures' "Hawaii Five-O." It lacks the crashing climax of the original TV version, true, but gains the atmospheric sound of -- well, I don't know what to call it. The lead guitar? I don't have the musical vocabulary. I like it, though.
I must be the only person in Da Swamp who has an ice scraper for his windshield, as well as a squeegee and rubber blade for removing condensation the rest of the year. Of course I'm also the one who prepares for winter weather with, what's it called, they're in all the stores? Oh, yeah, a coat or jacket. When I lived in Denver, I had a windshield snow/ice jacket: a big nylon sheet that you tucked into your front doors and kept the snow from actually touching the glass. Dunno if they still make it.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is not doing any better, though not really worse. He doesn't care for his canned food all of a sudden, which means he isn't getting his gabapentin. I've refilled the Rx for the gabapentin paste that goes on his ear, .1 ml, 3x a day. We'll see if that helps any. I'm not sanguine.
He may need a trip to the shop this weekend, and a new kind of Rx food. The current case of food, the one that got delayed by 2 weeks, Chewy refunded me for; so if I have to shift him to something else, I'm not out anything.
