Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | NBC News: "Conservative Activists" (Parents) Want the Schools (Government Agencies) to Disclose Their Lessons Plans (Government-Created Materials). But That's Bad.The Media Faction is actually now arguing that the Government Has Privacy Rights and should be allowed to keep secrets from citizens. They're literally arguing that parents should be forced -- by threat of violence -- to fund schools, but that schools should then conduct their business in secret, protected from parents' prying eyes. This. Cannot. Last. They fought critical race theory. Now they're focusing on 'curriculum transparency.'Art caption: Some conservative activists say the curriculum transparency effort is a potent strategic move to expose and root out progressive ideas from schoolsSo you're admitting conservatives are attempting to de-politicize the politicization already effected by your fellow progressives? Oh, of course they're not admitting that; in any question like this, they immediately default to the claim that "the truth has a progressive bias." Progressivism belongs in the schools because progressive politics is The Science. Lawmakers in at least 12 states have introduced legislation to require schools to post lists of all of their teaching materials online, including books, articles and videos. The governors of Arizona, Florida and Iowa, who have previously raised concerns about how teachers discuss racism's impact on politics and society, called for curriculum transparency laws in speeches to their legislatures this month. "Florida law should provide parents with the right to review the curriculum used in their children's schools," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, said in his State of the State address last week.Horrors! Parents want control over -- or even a heads up about -- the schools they're legally required to fund and which their children are legally required to attend. But the Government Has Rights!, we shall soon see. ... "People are going to disagree on a lot of these issues," said Matt Beienburg, the Goldwater Institute's director of education policy. "Transparency is something I think that at least allows for that conversation to know what is being taught. Everybody should be able to rally around the fact that we shouldn't be teaching something in secret." But teachers, their unions and free speech advocates say the proposals would excessively scrutinize daily classwork and would lead teachers to pre-emptively pull potentially contentious materials to avoid drawing criticism. Parents and legislators have already started campaigns to remove books dealing with race and gender, citing passages they find obscene, after they found out that the books were available in school libraries and classrooms. "It's important we call this out," said Jon Friedman, the director of free expression and education at PEN America, a nonprofit group that promotes free speech. "It's a shift toward more neutral-sounding language, but it's something that is potentially just as censorious."The only people in America who have full free speech rights are government workers during their government-paid jobs teaching your children in a venue your children are legally required to be present at. You, on the other hand, do not have any free speech rights. You also do not have the right to show up at school board meetings to challenge the methods and materials used to indoctrinate your children. But teachers, ah, the blessed teachers! Those for whom It's All About The Kids, as we've learned so many times over the past two years! They have carte blanche to indoctrinate and groom your children as they will. And how will that work out for them? Well, according to a new Trafalgar Poll: Not great. Not great. Republicans soar to a preposterous 13.5% lead on the generic Congressional ballot. Of the 1,083 likely general election voters surveyed between 01/12/22 and 01/15/22, just 38.7 percent approved of Biden's performance and 59.2 percent disapproved. Nearly 50 percent of voters said they strongly disapprove of the job Biden is doing. ... Trafalgar's party preference poll, conducted between 01/12/22 and 01/15/22, resulted in very ominous numbers for congressional Democrats. ... Respondents said they preferred Republicans over Democrats 55.7 percent to 42.2 percent. Note to future VA college students - take Oral Communication/Public Speaking at your local CC before going to college. Of all the required "core courses" so far, this one seems to be the utmost in leftist indoctrination. Which is a little surprising b/c you'd figure other core courses would be more likely for the indoctrination overkill, but I guess this one has no other course options except coming in with CC credit, and there's no AP course to bypass it, so here we are.

"Censorship" of organizations goes by another name: control.
My wife was a public school teacher. She wasn't allowed to talk about Jesus any time she wanted to, even if it could have helped a kid. Since courts decided that authorities at school are like "Congress" making laws putting people under the authority of Churches, she knew that she didn't have a "right" to say what she wanted. Now, curriculum is decided by administrators--even *further* up. If administrators can be "censored" in the curriculum, then any administrator that doesn't get his choice of textbooks is being "censored". Because the administration picks what this textbook says and not what that one says. This is soooo stupid. And, I daresay bullshit. Posted by: Axeman at January 20, 2022 05:42 PM (XHhHI) 51

As a homeschooler, I find it odd that parents want or need privacy. Since the beginning when my spouse and I started volunteer teaching homeschool kids, we've had a policy that parents can sit in the back or listen in on the computer at all times (depending whether we've been onsite or virtual) - partly so they can watch their own kids' behavior/effort and partly so they can know what's going on and incorporate it in other learning. Now, the only rule is they can't disrupt or answer the questions for the kids, but other than that, well, we hope they learn something...

MIT has a huge collection of practically all of their lectures online in a number of subjects and several other colleges do the same to a lesser degree and even the most run of the mill community college will post their syllabus online but apparently it's a bridge too far for some tattooed nitwit with a nose ring and a 1.9 GPA education degree to post her lesson plan for teaching history to your fifth grader.
Personally I think a lot of them are afraid of everyone finding out how dumb they actually are. I've run into some public school teachers over the years and I've yet to see one that impressed me with their intellect. Most of them teach straight from the textbook when they bother it all to teach. My 10th grade world history teacher back in the late seventies could go on for hours about the Peloponnesian Wars. So yes, Democrat will defend this hill and die on it, because if they lose here, they could be rolled up on a lot of other places. Conceptually, unionizing teachers is kind of a bad idea, despite several of my really good high school teachers defending it (oh, so many years ago in the 1970's). Maybe I'm missing something. Isn't there an existing source for lists of instructional materials? The students. Are none of the parents who have gotten deeply involved with the CRT asking their children to write-down the titles of written materials and videos used in their classes each day? Are children not permitted to take printed textbooks and handouts, or the electronic versions, out of school buildings? Are no parents asking their children to describe what they were taught in school that day, while recording the session on a phone or GoPro? This will not provide a list of materials to be used the next day, week, or month, but it's hard info that can be used to get a sense of where a given school or teacher is heading.
I support the efforts to mandate teaching materials transparency. Waiting for those laws to be passed should not be preventing parents from obtaining a lot of the info now from their children, then sharing the info with other parents, legislators, and friendly news media. Posted by: Citizen Cake at January 20, 2022 05:45 PM (HmZuC) It's not really that "Dems" have chosen this hill to die on; the real problem for them is that there is absolutely no leadership at all on top, no one to make choices or say "this really isn't a good idea". So what happens is that every vested interest group that's part of their coalition - in this case the Teachers Union and the Ed. Establishment - go nuclear whenever *their* personal grift and fiefdoms are challenged, and they drag the party into their fight with them, even if it's a stupid, destructive, battle that will damage all of them. A lot of teachers and schools didn't go along with this. And it's hard to hide the curriculum when you send the course agenda, its school books, and its assignments home with the kids. According to the morons on Twitter and Reddit, the teachers have to keep their curriculum secret or else they won't be allowed to teach about slavery and the Civil War.
Has anyone in the last sixty years of public education not been taught about slavery and the Civil War? I'm pretty sure the secret is out. School curriculums include those topics. In kindergarten, in Jewel45's hood, I walked about a mile home. Nobody thought a thing about it then.
On Halloween, my Mom dressed me as a mummy (my idea). She forgot little boys needed to pee. On the way home from school, I peed my pants, and a big dog stole all my candy. My Mom (sweetheart though she was) took a picture of me when I came home. That kinda reinforces memories. Posted by: MkY at January 20, 2022 06:46 PM (cPGH3) 409

Almost all the teachers here post the books they use and the course of study. That is, the curriculum being used to teach those books in outline form. They also post tests, quizzes and all points that make up the grades.
I don't see why this is a big deal unless you're hiding something. Posted by: Marcus T at January 20, 2022 06:28 Curriculum, yes. Standards and benchmarks, yes. Syllabi, yes. Daily lesson plans, no. Answer keys to tests, NEVER. Posted by: NaughtyPine at January 20, 2022 07:10 PM (fxCK2) 427
I should clarify: daily lesson plans in advance, no. We had that under a previous administrator, and some parents flipped out if ANYTHING changed over the course of a week. For example, good teachers shift gears if students aren't "getting" the material, but adding practices might change quiz dates.
