We got the worst possible news...our friend and coblogger OregonMuse passed away yesterday afternoon (1/18/2022). He was surrounded by his family, and the last contact I had from him he was his usual combative and optimistic self...sure that he was going to beat Covid. OregonMuse has been the proprietor (his wonderful term) of the Book Thread forever! He put his deft and interesting touch on it and it has become a fixture on AoSHQ. His Morning Rant was his usual combination of sometimes savage observation tempered with what one can only describe as kindness! Not toward his targets, but for everything else... He even created a devoted following for the Chess Thread. How many political blogs can boast of an accomplished amateur chess player doing a weekly post? I have nothing but fond memories of him...his relentless optimism coupled with that wonderful perspective that amazed me every single time I read his rants. I did a search of my emails, and I have hundreds from him...seemingly every single one had that spark of hopefulness and sanguinity that was his marvelous signature. He will be missed by all.... OM was commenting for as long as I remember, but all of his threads are relatively recent (I want to say within the last 8 years, but I could be way off). Weekends used to be barren around here, with just the coffee thread, maybe a random post or two, and then the ONT. OM almost singlehandedly made weekends an event on the HQ.

Wonderful story, Wolfus. A year or so ago on the weekend, I submitted Bobbie Gentry and Robby Benson for Who Dis -- and OM/GorillaPundit said he would replace his planned interviews with that for Monday much to my delight.
Damn, I've been so busy and procrastinating that for a month or two I was going to send him Barbara Hershey and David Carradine after seeing them together in an obscure connection: a two-part episode in the third and final season of the original Kung Fu TV series, which I rewatching now (my favorite show as a kid) and the wifey is enjoying for the first time. She being quite young and gorgeous of course, pretending to be not only half Chinese like his character, but initially pretending to be a young boy.

OM was commenting for as long as I remember, but all of his threads are relatively recent (I want to say within the last 8 years, but I could be way off). Weekends used to be barren around here, with just the coffee thread, maybe a random post or two, and then the ONT. OM almost singlehandedly made weekends an event on the HQ.

Although my participation was spotty on the Book Thread (I've gotten better about it lately), I remember how thrilled I was when OM added my suggested phrase "... who follow words with their fingers and whose lips move as they read ..." to that thread's introductory paragraph. It was as close to AoSHQ immortality as I'll likely ever get. I recall, too, the hilarity that ensued when a poster suggested that the Chess Thread was a nest of sultry and seductive wickedness because of OM posting fetching photos of accomplished female chess players from around the world.
That said, my heart goes out to OM's family and friends, and to all of us, all of whom will truly know what we are missing with his passing. Rest in Peace, OM.

Amen to that! Weekends are when this place really gets classy with themed threads that encourage all of us to share more than snark and rants over the news if the world going to hell. Gardening, pets, chess and fashion, movies, outdoors, books, food, firearms (apologies to any topic that I've overlooked). And all of them launched both days by the pithy "rise and shine" offerings of krakatoa.
There is so much that I have learned from the weekend offerings here.

However, it was his Book Thread that convinced me to stop being a lurker and start commenting on a regular basis. I have never regretted it and I've really come to know and love the rest of the regular commenters here. It's because of OM that I had the courage to go to a TXMOME, one of the greatest experiences in my life. If you ever get a chance to attend a MOME, DO IT! And know that OM is watching over you and joining in the fun in some small way!

It is honestly shocking to me how distraught this news makes me. Someone to whom I never even spoke, but who spoke deeply to me as a real human being, a special person with varied interests and a love of sharing them. A true humanitarian, both humble and real. This says it for me. I de-lurked yesterday to make a cheap joke, sadly doing it again today to give my sincere condolences to everyone who knew him -- his family above all, but also those here who knew him personally or virtually. I guess I've been reading AoSHQ since 5-6 months after it began way back when, and looking back over the years OM's posts always stuck out for me and were must-reads.
He earned his rest and he's with Jesus now. All of the beauty he looked for in this world has been infinitely eclipsed and it's blowing his mind in the most wonderful way. It's for the rest of us to carry on the good fight in our own lives. Oregon Muse is an example to me of how to weather this slog of life, never surrender, and seek what's true and good.

Long time lurker here that has enjoyed and looked forward to all of his posts from the daily posts to the weekend posts. OM's posts were reassuring in the same way Rush Limbaugh was for the simple acknowledgement that not everyone has gone mad.

This year has a pall cast upon it already. Much closer to home is the news that my father will have a biopsy done for lung cancer. He's not a spring chicken either.

This, in many ways this. I get very tired of the political shenanigans reported during the weekdays and look forward to a bit of downtime from the politic on the WE. OM made this happen and I am/was very glad for the moderate change of pace.
For all the people I have mentioned the blog to, I always made a big point that it wasn't all politics. People are very tired of the polarization and the echo chambers. OM's efforts kept things well rounded.
I am going to miss that very much. Others who have known him personally will miss him even more. His family, will never be the same.
So fucking sad.

Over the last couple of years, the Book Thread was the one place of calm left on the internet. People brought politics in and OM showed them the door. For a while, it was my only link with the Horde because everything else was just too much.
OM was also instrumental in my success as a writer. The Book Thread was the genesis of Long Live Death, by far my most successful book and one that opened up a new path for me. I literally could not have written that book without OM and his Book Thread. I would not have had access to sources, people, feedback and - finally - customers interested in it.
I'd love to have met him, shook his hand and thanked him. That's my greatest regret. Rest in Peace.

I mostly feel invincible, but have had bad shoulder issues for four months, and related to OM and his fall and problems. Then he got the Covid ... and the second post in the right column about his slow return gave me a sense of foreboding, and then catching up I saw the terrible news from CBD.

Grammie, I second that. I had faith about the joy awaiting us in the afterlife, but after my dear Tim died, he came back to SHOW me. And that joy cannot be contained; it's like trying to catch a waterfall with a thimble. THIS I KNOW.
So our dear friend is in the best of places. It's those he leaves behind who are poorer for it. My heart and prayers go out especially for Mrs Muse, who will feel the sting of the world going on without him.

He wrote this brilliant piece back in November that I STILL think about, talking about the weaponization of law enforcement agencies against conservatives and warning not to put too much trust and power in their hands. I wish there were more people writing things like this.

Gonna miss his 'Who Dis' 'contests' - it was interesting looking at old B&W photos of the stars and starlets, and knowing from my experimenting with photography in the '70s how much of a difference just using a different film and photo paper could make. Ilford, as I recall, had a warmer and softer tone, while Kodak products were 'brighter'.

The Sunday Book Thread was must read every week. I do not know how many books I have added to my library based on recommendations from it. And the gorillapundit and chess threads were delights, as well. This honestly hit as much as when Rush passed.
