Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | OregonMuse[Comments are now closed] We got the worst possible news...our friend and coblogger OregonMuse passed away yesterday afternoon (1/18/2022). He was surrounded by his family, and the last contact I had from him he was his usual combative and optimistic self...sure that he was going to beat Covid. OregonMuse has been the proprietor (his wonderful term) of the Book Thread forever! He put his deft and interesting touch on it and it has become a fixture on AoSHQ. His Morning Rant was his usual combination of sometimes savage observation tempered with what one can only describe as kindness! Not toward his targets, but for everything else... He even created a devoted following for the Chess Thread. How many political blogs can boast of an accomplished amateur chess player doing a weekly post? I have nothing but fond memories of him...his relentless optimism coupled with that wonderful perspective that amazed me every single time I read his rants. I did a search of my emails, and I have hundreds from him...seemingly every single one had that spark of hopefulness and sanguinity that was his marvelous signature. He will be missed by all.... 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Posted by: Aunt Ralph at January 19, 2022 09:22 AM (WdI30) 21

OM's MWF Morning Rants were epic. I admit, I usually skipped down first to see if I could guess his Who Dis candidates for the day. But I always came back up to read his essay and to enjoy all the memes and cartoons he posted. That's the thing about AoSHQ: The content is not a means to an end, it's an end in itself.

IDK, it's been close to 15-16 years now that I've been coming here. It never fails to strike me how attached we get to what most would think is just a made up screen name. It's so much more than that. It becomes a sort of virtual family after a while. There will be more, I know, but today I pour one out, to them all.

He could hit a subject hard, but without harshness. Always a bit of yes, CBD, sanguinity. This is crushing news. I am terribly sorry to see this.
I keep a folder called Memorable Misc., for things I read on the internet and tell myself, "This is awesome and if I don't save it now, I won't know how to find it again." Oregon Muse authored quite a few entries. If you all don't mind, this is from one of my favorites. I just love the perspective, and the writing: "You know who I think is a good example of grrl power? Dorothy Gale. You know, the character played by Judy Garland in the classic Wizard of Oz film. I don't know about the character in the book, but in the film version, Dorothy spent most of the journey through Oz scared to death. But do you know what? She slapped a dangerous lion in the snout. She threw water on a witch. And she called out a wizard with god-like powers for being a lying sh*tweasel. She was not any less afraid, but but she did what was needed to be done at the time she needed to act. That's courage. That's grrl power. And she didn't just stand there striking a pose." Rest in peace. Posted by: JPS at January 19, 2022 09:40 AM (D++Xq) 134

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at January 19, 2022 09:35 AM (txdEq) --------- Wonderful story, Wolfus. A year or so ago on the weekend, I submitted Bobbie Gentry and Robby Benson for Who Dis -- and OM/GorillaPundit said he would replace his planned interviews with that for Monday much to my delight. Damn, I've been so busy and procrastinating that for a month or two I was going to send him Barbara Hershey and David Carradine after seeing them together in an obscure connection: a two-part episode in the third and final season of the original Kung Fu TV series, which I rewatching now (my favorite show as a kid) and the wifey is enjoying for the first time. She being quite young and gorgeous of course, pretending to be not only half Chinese like his character, but initially pretending to be a young boy. Alas, I regret now that I waited too long ... He introduced me (and probably many more Hordelings) to the motte-and-bailey fallacy. {A form of argument and an informal fallacy where an arguer conflates two positions that share similarities, one modest and easy to defend (the "motte") and one much more controversial (the "bailey").} The way he slowly changed his signature gorilla photo in the early days of the pandemic to include a mask and social distancing. Well said CBD...a perfect summation of this wonderful man. Somewhere OM is sitting in a library that is grand and glorious beyond words. Although my participation was spotty on the Book Thread (I've gotten better about it lately), I remember how thrilled I was when OM added my suggested phrase "... who follow words with their fingers and whose lips move as they read ..." to that thread's introductory paragraph. It was as close to AoSHQ immortality as I'll likely ever get. I recall, too, the hilarity that ensued when a poster suggested that the Chess Thread was a nest of sultry and seductive wickedness because of OM posting fetching photos of accomplished female chess players from around the world. That said, my heart goes out to OM's family and friends, and to all of us, all of whom will truly know what we are missing with his passing. Rest in Peace, OM. I have to say that I believe it doesn't help anyone who becomes ill that the nation is undergoing some very trying, perplexing and black times.
So it behooves anyone who does become ill no matter the prognosis to realize that regardless how bleak and disparate the times may appear do not surrender to the urge to let go. Stand and fight if only for a little while longer as we are the United States and we have encountered and overcome some very daunting and terrifying times before. Do not let yourself abandon hope and give up. Realize that just your very presence in this world is a testament of faith and belief in the Lord and is a pain and despair to the Devil. Stand up, Stand strong, Stand faithful to the belief in the Light and damnation to the evil that seeks to blot it out. Posted by: jakee308 at January 19, 2022 10:03 AM (eQvlh) 256

What do you say?Words seem inadequate and actions are hard to arrange from hundreds of miles away...but words are all I have for now so here they are in all their inadequacy.
He was my guest, our guest, at the first Pacific Northwest Moron Meetup. He drove over five hours to see us, a bunch of randos from the internet he mostly knew by nicknames. He ate my food, drank at my table and entertained us all with his graciousness, his geniality and his goodness. He and his lovely wife, who seemed to possess all the Graces, blessed us with his presence. Later, in his account of the event, he described me as a 'WWE Heel gone to seed'...which was...fair. Oregon Muse was sui generis, springing fully-grown (and wearing pants...) from the forehead of Athena. This fostered in him a lifelong fascination with women, dresses with women in them, women and books, and women who are in charge of ritualistic tabletop warfare (chess).
He is not gone. He is merely one bookshelf away from us in the great Library of Life. It will be his voice whispering in your ear, "oh, that's an interesting book. Add it to the pile, what's the harm!" Normal people have little angels and devils on their shoulders. We have a book-lover. Named OregonMuse. Hopefully something good, because, as you all know, life is too short to be reading lousy books." Posted by: KT at January 19, 2022 10:09 AM (0ghg2) 281
OM was of the blog well before me. Others will have known him longer, better. But I always looked forward to his threads, to the great Gorilla Pundit...a meme he took, owned and made his own.
He was a fair administrator of Ace's home, even handed, welcoming, neither prudish nor crude. Now he is in Heaven, for he was a man of the faith in Jesus Christ and he has gone now to meet his savior, his sovereign and king. He will be crowned and be deserving of crowns. He will own an incorruptible body that will not grow weak, or faint or ill. Death, for him, is no tragedy surely. Tragedy is ours. Ours... If losing Tami was a cannonball, losing our Muse is a magazine explosion. I still can't imagine how large the hole will be. But we go on, that is what we do, that is life. The banner has fallen, the torch gutters, but someone will take it up. Death is not the end for him or for us. He goes on, out there out of our sight, and we go on here, without him. /2 Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards (Logan Tiberius 2012-2021) at January 19, 2022 10:09 AM (eeRB6) 282

Thank you for guiding me straight and true through the many obstacles in my path. And for keeping me resolute when all around seemed lost. Thank you for your protection and for your many signs along the way. Thank you for the good that I may have done. I am so sorry about the bad. Thank you for the friend I made. Please watch over her as you watched over me. Thank you for finally allowing me to rest. I am so very tired. I am so sad to read this, I wish there was some way to reach out to his family and help them know how much he was loved, respected, and appreciated here.
This is an important reminder though: the Wuhan Flu is often disregarded here as completely harmless or sometimes even called a myth by some on the right, and it is not, any more than the flu. It can be deadly. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 19, 2022 10:43 AM (KZzsI) 436
I gotta be honest, I feared this when it was taking so long for him to recover and return. Several weeks fighting this is a very, very bad sign.

I would imagine that his family might have something go to his church r if not I hope that news will be forthcoming. OM had told me that their pastor-whom he quite liked-was from from Australia or New Zealand, I think (?) and arrived at a new church as the plandemic was going on, which I can appreciate was very hard for a new pastor. It has been hard enough on the ones who have been at a church for a while. I'm sure OM-being the kind of person he was- was a source of support to him, so prayers for the pastor and the other church members who got to know OM and love every week too.

Its hard to explain but more than any other commenter here I felt I knew and was close to OM. I wish I had met him at some point. He felt like a friend, and maybe that's how he was to everyone else, but the man lived not terribly far from me, especially compared to a lot of commenters here.

"You know who I think is a good example of grrl power? Dorothy Gale. You know, the character played by Judy Garland in the classic Wizard of Oz film. I don't know about the character in the book, but in the film version, Dorothy spent most of the journey through Oz scared to death. But do you know what? She slapped a dangerous lion in the snout. She threw water on a witch. And she called out a wizard with god-like powers for being a lying sh*tweasel. She was not any less afraid, but but she did what was needed to be done at the time she needed to act. That's courage. That's grrl power. And she didn't just stand there striking a pose."

My heart goes out to his family. The loss of Oregon Muse leaves such a hole in so many hearts. I never personally knew the man, but my one guilty pleasure on Sunday mornings was firing up the laptop over breakfast and reading the Book Thread. Loved his Who's Dis pictures and his righteous rants. My late mom always said the good die young, that evil people seem to live forever. Over my lifetime, I have come to understand her statement. OM's passing solidifies that belief. God speed, OM. You will be sorely missed by all of us. Condolences to your family. May they be comforted by the fact that you were loved by so many.

When America does what was promis'd, When through These States walk a hundred millions of superb persons, When the rest part away for superb persons and contribute to them, When breeds of the most perfect mothers denote America, Then to me and mine our due fruition. I have press'd through in my own right, I have sung the body and the soul, war and peace have I sung, and the songs of life and death, And the songs of birth, and shown that there are many births. I have offer'd my style to everyone, I have journey'd with confident step, While my pleasure is yet at the full I whisper So long! Rest In Peace, my unmet friend.
You brought only good things into my life. Thank you. Posted by: naturalfake at January 19, 2022 10:10 AM (OMayC) This says it for me. I de-lurked yesterday to make a cheap joke, sadly doing it again today to give my sincere condolences to everyone who knew him -- his family above all, but also those here who knew him personally or virtually. I guess I've been reading AoSHQ since 5-6 months after it began way back when, and looking back over the years OM's posts always stuck out for me and were must-reads. He earned his rest and he's with Jesus now. All of the beauty he looked for in this world has been infinitely eclipsed and it's blowing his mind in the most wonderful way. It's for the rest of us to carry on the good fight in our own lives. Oregon Muse is an example to me of how to weather this slog of life, never surrender, and seek what's true and good. Never met OM. Never met any other Moron, actually--I'm the only reader of the HQ that I know of. As far as I can remember, OM never said a word to me in a comment or anything. But he was still a friend. I looked forward to Gorilla; the Who Dis, all of the other posts he did. I hope his wife is OK (she is sick too?). And I hope someone checks on Ace and the rest of the COB's. RIP, OregonMuse. You've graduated to something better. Go sit down with the Inklings and as CS Lewis said, "Further Up and Further In." This is just heartbreaking news. The AoS site is like an endless series of Mensa meetups, with different fun and games and stimulating conversations going on all the time. OregonMuse was a lively, genial host and contributor. Maybe more important, he and the other Cobs have been keeping our spirits up and serving as a sanity check during these dismal, irrational years.
As so many others have said, I feel as if I've lost a treasured friend. I hope his family is comforted by knowing how many people valued his knowledge, accomplishments, wit, and wisdom. And I join the prayers for Mrs. Muse's recovery. Posted by: Furbetta at January 19, 2022 01:53 PM (L1zHa) 702

^^^^^^^ This, in many ways this. I get very tired of the political shenanigans reported during the weekdays and look forward to a bit of downtime from the politic on the WE. OM made this happen and I am/was very glad for the moderate change of pace. For all the people I have mentioned the blog to, I always made a big point that it wasn't all politics. People are very tired of the polarization and the echo chambers. OM's efforts kept things well rounded. I am going to miss that very much. It is a strange thing to owe so much to someone whose name you don't know.
Over the last couple of years, the Book Thread was the one place of calm left on the internet. People brought politics in and OM showed them the door. For a while, it was my only link with the Horde because everything else was just too much. OM was also instrumental in my success as a writer. The Book Thread was the genesis of Long Live Death, by far my most successful book and one that opened up a new path for me. I literally could not have written that book without OM and his Book Thread. I would not have had access to sources, people, feedback and - finally - customers interested in it. I'd love to have met him, shook his hand and thanked him. That's my greatest regret. Rest in Peace. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at January 19, 2022 03:32 PM (llXky) 737

Like so many others have mentioned, I felt like I knew him from his writings and he was (is, rather) clearly a kind and gentle soul, as well as a great writer. RIP OregonMuse, friend from afar.

What a great loss for us, and his family, rest in peace!--
Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begot us. The Lord hath wrought great glory by them through his great power from the beginning. Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms, men renowned for their power, giving counsel by their understanding, and declaring prophecies: leaders of the people by their counsels, and by their knowledge of learning meet for the people, wise and eloquent in their instructions: such as found out musical tunes, and recited verses in writing: rich men furnished with ability, living peaceably in their habitations: all these were honored in their generations, and they were the glory of their times. Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing? Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing? Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning? He is gone, gone down in the West with the setting of the Sun. But he will not be forgotten. God Bless Oregon Muse and his family ... God Speed and all that ... [edited]
I mostly feel invincible, but have had bad shoulder issues for four months, and related to OM and his fall and problems. Then he got the Covid ... and the second post in the right column about his slow return gave me a sense of foreboding, and then catching up I saw the terrible news from CBD. A good man, ran the race, hence there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness ... (imo, God will make those final determinations, OM was as pure as they come from my view) A toast to OM ... may he have inspired 1000 believers to rise up in the path we can still read from his old posts ... (maybe those could be consolidated in an online "book" by some willing AoS editors of common faith?) Oregon Muse was a "tupos" ('pattern' in this verse in Titus) "In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you." Terrible to hear this. Oregon Muse has always struck me as a thoughtful, real human being; his writing is infused with his self-deprecatory insights and his cutting wit, flowing naturally with no hint of pretension. I know in my heart where he is today. We have not lost him - he just has a different address. As followers of Christ, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. When he walked through that door from this life to the next, he walked into the arms of Jesus, his Savior.
Posted by: grammie winger at January 19, 2022 09:28 AM (45fpk) Grammie, I second that. I had faith about the joy awaiting us in the afterlife, but after my dear Tim died, he came back to SHOW me. He wrote this brilliant piece back in November that I STILL think about, talking about the weaponization of law enforcement agencies against conservatives and warning not to put too much trust and power in their hands. I wish there were more people writing things like this. https://acecomments.mu.nu/?post=396526 RIP, OM. I loved your work here. It was with great sadness I read this before work this evening. And now I sit here at my keyboard and find I can only echo what others have said. OM was a scholar and a gentleman. His morning rant and who dis brightened many a day. the book thread was always a treasure even tho I did have to find pants first. RIP Oregon Muse

I am stunned and saddened. For a long time, I've been unable to get Ace on my iPhone without it crashing, and so haven't been to visit as often as I used to. But Gorilla Pundit and the Book Thread were perfection when I could get them to load. I came tonight (using the laptop) because I just discovered that commenter Red...c4 who I knew IRL passed away a bit ago and I wanted to see if I could find his goodbyes. Only to find that OM is gone. Truly, blessings to all of you for all that you do, and to his family who was luckiest of all to have him in person.

Gonna miss his 'Who Dis' 'contests' - it was interesting looking at old B&W photos of the stars and starlets, and knowing from my experimenting with photography in the '70s how much of a difference just using a different film and photo paper could make.
