Daily Tech News 17 January 2022

Top Story

  • The other server was down for a few hours overnight my time. I blame volcanic activity in the server room. Or possibly the server burped at 2AM and when I fixed it I forgot to restart the cache service and then it filled all its RAM with Sendmail instances trying to notify me of this failure.

    Sigh.

  • The main internet link to Tonga went down for a very good reason - it got blown up by a volcano. (ZDNet)

The country's satellite links are also being blocked by the volcanic ash cloud meaning that communication with the rest of the world currently consists of SPEAKING VERY LOUDLY.

Australia and New Zealand sent survey planes today to assess the damage and work out the best way to deliver aid - particularly tricky given that the volcano is still active. The first relief flight out of Australia is planned for tomorrow.

Tech News

  • Businesses have started to notice that Democrats are not their friends. (Inside Track)

The Big Tech of the 19th century has just now noticed that socialism has failed every time it was tried:
"Criminals are caught and arrested, turned over to local authorities for booking, arraigned before the local courts, charges are reduced to a misdemeanor or petty offense, and the criminal is released after paying a nominal fine," said the letter. "These individuals are generally caught and released back onto the streets in less than 24 hours. Even with all the arrests made, the no-cash bail policy and extended timeframe for suspects to appear in court is causing re-victimization to Union Pacific by these same criminals."
At some point, when a person or a state is utterly determined to self-destruct, you have to be prepared to walk away.

  • Don't buy Lenovo PCs. (Serve the Home)

This isn't an issue with laptops or tablets, but on their servers, workstations, and desktops, they are locking the CPUs so that they can't be used in anything but Lenovo hardware.

Someone should sue them under California law for creating avoidable e-waste.

  • NPM dependency hell link of the day. (Bleeping Computer)

If you're using Node.js in the first place, you deserve this.

  • Emulating the Sega Genesis. (Jabberywocky)

This is the sort of thing we should be doing more of, and less of all the other nonsense.

  • Nvidia's RTX 3090 Ti could cost between $3500 and $4500 if you can find one at all. (WCCFTech)

And we complained when the 3090 was originally priced at $1499.

You know, I can get off on crazy tangents. One I'm on now is time syncing. Playing around with that, I discovered that Windows is piss poor at time syncing by default. Clock can get over 1 sec out of whack. Most linux systems, by default are much better.

But you can make Windows much better (with Windows 10 and Server 2016 or better, I think -- I don't think Win 7 could do it, but I may be wrong) by messing around with various arcane settings. I read up on that. You can make Windows use multiple NTP sources, which I did (have to use command line/registry to do it, GUI interface doesn't let you).

So, I've got Windows 10 on this machine keeping time synced to within 30 ms of UTC(NIST) now. I could do better than that, but I'd have to bother the NIST and other Stratum 1 servers too much for that.

Around here, standard distribution voltage is 12470Y/7200V. 7200V to ground. There have been a few instances where the wires have actually hit the ground, but not enough ground current flowed to trip anything. Some brush fires were set by that.

All this depends on a myriad of factors. Most of the time, when lines go down, there will be a big fault that trips them out. But sometimes, when conditions are just right, it can keep on trucking. But arcing and sparking on the ground can indeed set fires.

Around here, Duke got to using "covered" lines in some problem areas. "Covered" means a layer of insulating material, but not rated as proper insulation at the voltage level. It was basically ASCR with a layer on the outside. Again, not insulation, just "covering".

Re the Sun, and stars like here. We really don't know what kind of excursions from normal they are capable of. "History" as we know it is only 5000 years old or so. Our understanding of physics involved is only 100 years or so old, as well as our accurate observations of such stars in the galaxy.

Can a star like Mr. Sun go apeshit from time to time and do crazy things? It just might.

85 Whst's remarkable is how the US - who collectively spends staggering amounts of $$$ on government at the local, state, and federal level can be brought to a standstill if not total anarchy merely by a few key individuals refusing to do their jobs.

Think of all the law enforcement apparatus. State patrol. Sherrifs departments, police departments, FBI, Texas Rangers, National Guard. Even the DNR guys are duly sworn officers and can make arrests. Oh yeah - the Department Of Homeland Security and Other Important Sounding Capitalized Agencies.

The list is fucking endless. Even the Maple Syrup Commission has an MRAP and a few conex stashed with hollow point .40 cal.

Note that looting a Train - I guarantee they can find some sort of Federal justification for locking looters up. Trains are national security, infrastructure, blah blah blah. Easily.

All of the problems we face are basically unforced errors and own goals. "Can't get their from here. Our hands our tied" we are told.

Not much is known. These things have been observed in very young sun-like stars, so they hope they don't happen with older stars. But no one knows for sure.

Anna mentioned something in the Book Thread yesterday about Japan's actions in WWII so I started looking up some history. They were nasty as hell toward China. Germ and biological warfare against civilian populations, razing buildings and farmland, starving populations. After the Doolittle raid on Japan they even turned it up a notch and killed off another quarter million Chinese in retaliation.

The USA had some sort of 'lend/lease' program to assist China, and with the nuking of Japan brought all the hostilities to an end. Eighty years later it's all forgotten.

There are processes in the universe that release energy of a magnitude that we can't fathom. We have no frame of reference. Make setting off all the nuclear bombs on the earth at once look like a fart in the wind.

Some of the most energetic processes know are the gamma ray bursts. Enormous energy release in a short time, and in a narrow beam.

They're still not sure exactly what the mechanism is, likely several. Question is, how many of these things occur in the Milky Way per time, and what are the odds of Earth being close enough and in the beam width?

Well, odds are, subject to change, that the Earth has been exposed to at least one such sterilizing gamma burst over her 4.5 billion year lifetime. Over 90% for at least one. There have been various massive extinction events over the life of the earth, and some are candidates for such a sterilizing gamma ray burst.

Just imagine one fine day you're walking around and suddenly you're bathed in an unimaginable flux of gamma rays. You're dead instantly. Most complex life on the planet is now gone.

Re energetic events. The most powerful gamma rays burst are the most powerful (non-gravitational) events know. We're talking about the conversion of several earth-size mass to energy (via E=mc^2) per second. That's just mind-boggling. IOW, those gamma bursts to converting several earth's worth of mass to "pure energy" as Mr. Spock would say per second.

Now that gravitational radiation has been experimentally confirmed, 100 years after Uncle Al Einstein proposed them, they take the cake.

A merger of two black holes releases a power, in the form of gravitational radiation of several *solar masses* worth of mass to energy per second, and that takes the cake.

If you were close enough to such a thing, the gravitational waves would rip you apart. Your head would be pulled one way at some ridiculous g value, while your feet would be pulled the other.

166 You lucky people with your "pleasantly warm" Mays and Septembers. Ha.

May in the upper Midwest is full of such beauty. The richness and benevolence and are incredible. Everything springs to life with fervor. Our little property looks like a dump in March. In May, it's fit for a king.

I want to live where the above is generally true. Here we have January and SUMMER.

Move to Pennsylvania - you'll experience every season, good and hard. After a couple of years of that you might change your mind.

168 Note that looting a Train - I guarantee they can find some sort of Federal justification for locking looters up. Trains are national security, infrastructure, blah blah blah. Easily.

All of the problems we face are basically unforced errors and own goals. "Can't get their from here. Our hands our tied" we are told.

Have someone send a letter to the AG claiming that these looters are disrupting school board meetings.

169 in west metro Denver we have 2 summers

the first is pleasant and green, wildflowers on roadsides, all the trees leafed out and shady

the second is when it stops raining, and everything turns brown, to tinder

170 When I lived in Monterey, CA there were 2 seasons; rainy and then everything else. "Rainy" being from about Nov - Mar.

Those meteorological seasons are Northern Hemispheric centric. Racist and Northen supremacist, of course.

In the Southern hemisphere, phase shift by 6 months.

Oh yes. There's a particular joy to such things that you only know after a long winter.

But I can sure understand that the tradeoff of knowing such a joy may not always be worth it, haha.

I suspect that overall, it's warmer there. The Earth is closest to the Sun on Jan. 2, Southern summer, and then you have more water, which also holds more heat.

I always enjoy fall here in PA. It's like spring but in reverse. Instead of every day getting gradually warmer, every day gets gradually cooler. But it's still light jacket weather, not sweat pants under jeans, four layers of shirts, then overcoat, hat, and gloves.

203 So, I've got Windows 10 on this machine keeping time synced to within 30 ms of UTC(NIST) now. I could do better than that, but I'd have to bother the NIST and other Stratum 1 servers too much for that.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 17, 2022 04:16 AM

If you are worried about burdening low-stratum time servers, just go out and blow the $50 you need to setup your own stratum 1 time server. I use my own NTP server internal to my network, synchonized to Debian's NTP pool and I don't worry about it.

204 Re the Sun, and stars like here.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 17, 2022 06:27 AM

A telescope is not just a distance-spanning device, it is also a time machine. Astronomers have observed literally billions of G7 stars using light going back literally millions of years and have never once observed one "going apeshit." So, while the history of our own sun only really goes back a couple of hundred years, we know what the entire lifespan of a G7 star is like.
