Top Story

The other server was down for a few hours overnight my time. I blame volcanic activity in the server room. Or possibly the server burped at 2AM and when I fixed it I forgot to restart the cache service and then it filled all its RAM with Sendmail instances trying to notify me of this failure.

Sigh.
The main internet link to Tonga went down for a very good reason - it got blown up by a volcano. (ZDNet)

The country's satellite links are also being blocked by the volcanic ash cloud meaning that communication with the rest of the world currently consists of SPEAKING VERY LOUDLY.

Australia and New Zealand sent survey planes today to assess the damage and work out the best way to deliver aid - particularly tricky given that the volcano is still active. The first relief flight out of Australia is planned for tomorrow.

You know, I can get off on crazy tangents. One I'm on now is time syncing. Playing around with that, I discovered that Windows is piss poor at time syncing by default. Clock can get over 1 sec out of whack. Most linux systems, by default are much better.

But you can make Windows much better (with Windows 10 and Server 2016 or better, I think -- I don't think Win 7 could do it, but I may be wrong) by messing around with various arcane settings. I read up on that. You can make Windows use multiple NTP sources, which I did (have to use command line/registry to do it, GUI interface doesn't let you).

So, I've got Windows 10 on this machine keeping time synced to within 30 ms of UTC(NIST) now. I could do better than that, but I'd have to bother the NIST and other Stratum 1 servers too much for that.

The main driver for this is Covid hypocrisy. It has emerged, as the Brits say, that BoJo and his crew have been holding big parties all through the pandemic, while imposing strict lockdowns and shit on the peasants.

I know it's not the cooking thread but I got a 24 ounce bottle of cold-pressed hemp oil recently because it's supposed to retard the corona. I used an eyedropper to put some on some crackers with my cheese, and the wife put some on her salad. We both agreed it's not a bad taste but at 120 calories per teaspoon not exactly the best thing for Gainzzz.

Not exactly cheap compared to olive oil, but just a temporary thing until herd immunity - at this rate of infection, should be by spring.

Around here, standard distribution voltage is 12470Y/7200V. 7200V to ground. There have been a few instances where the wires have actually hit the ground, but not enough ground current flowed to trip anything. Some brush fires were set by that.

All this depends on a myriad of factors. Most of the time, when lines go down, there will be a big fault that trips them out. But sometimes, when conditions are just right, it can keep on trucking. But arcing and sparking on the ground can indeed set fires.

Around here, Duke got to using "covered" lines in some problem areas. "Covered" means a layer of insulating material, but not rated as proper insulation at the voltage level. It was basically ASCR with a layer on the outside. Again, not insulation, just "covering".

It helped some with a lot of foliage nearby.

But the Sun is quite active. However, if solar output ends up lower and because of dust in the upper atmosphere, we will need all the global warming gas we can get in the atmosphere.

But the latest data at http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ products/solar-cycle-progression says otherwise.

Re the Sun, and stars like here. We really don't know what kind of excursions from normal they are capable of. "History" as we know it is only 5000 years old or so. Our understanding of physics involved is only 100 years or so old, as well as our accurate observations of such stars in the galaxy.

Recently, they've discovered that Sun-like stars can indeed go apeshit, sending out "Super CMEs" that would be sterilizing for life on Earth, if the Sun did it.

Not much is known. These things have been observed in very young sun-like stars, so they hope they don't happen with older stars. But no one knows for sure.

Anna mentioned something in the Book Thread yesterday about Japan's actions in WWII so I started looking up some history. They were nasty as hell toward China. Germ and biological warfare against civilian populations, razing buildings and farmland, starving populations. After the Doolittle raid on Japan they even turned it up a notch and killed off another quarter million Chinese in retaliation.

The USA had some sort of 'lend/lease' program to assist China, and with the nuking of Japan brought all the hostilities to an end. Eighty years later it's all forgotten.

That pretty much aligns nicely with the seasonal weather patterns. I did not know this until my meteorological weatherman cousin (now retired) 'splained it to me a few years ago.

That makes the most sense for practical definition of seasons.

This is the season that has the most differentiation to me. Early spring, middle spring, and late spring are each completely different - which each iteration getting more pleasant. My favorite is 'late spring' - no heating or cooling required, trees are filling with leaves, afternoon temperatures are delightful. Best month of the year. As much as I love summer, I always hate when May ends.

I suspect that overall, it's warmer there. The Earth is closest to the Sun on Jan. 2, Southern summer, and then you have more water, which also holds more heat.

I always enjoy fall here in PA. It's like spring but in reverse. Instead of every day getting gradually warmer, every day gets gradually cooler. But it's still light jacket weather, not sweat pants under jeans, four layers of shirts, then overcoat, hat, and gloves.

If you are worried about burdening low-stratum time servers, just go out and blow the $50 you need to setup your own stratum 1 time server. I use my own NTP server internal to my network, synchonized to Debian's NTP pool and I don't worry about it.

Our understanding of physics involved is only 100 years or so old, as well as our accurate observations of such stars in the galaxy.

A telescope is not just a distance-spanning device, it is also a time machine. Astronomers have observed literally billions of G7 stars using light going back literally millions of years and have never once observed one "going apeshit." So, while the history of our own sun only really goes back a couple of hundred years, we know what the entire lifespan of a G7 star is like.
