The Morning Rant: Saved From A Liberal College Education - More University Lockdowns Please

This heartwarming story about collapsing college enrollment has been reported on by all the major media in the past few days.

Enrollment Marches Downward (Inside Higher Ed – 01/13/2022)

Total enrollment—which includes undergraduate and graduate students—dropped by 2.7 percent in fall 2021 compared with fall 2020, according to the clearinghouse report. Since the pandemic began in spring 2020, enrollment has declined by 5.1 percent across the board, with 937,500 fewer students enrolled at American colleges and universities.

As damaging as the high priests of Covid have been to liberty and the economy, they have inflicted some welcome collateral damage to the agents of institutional leftism, above else to the educational establishment.

Watching the university cartel commit suicide to show their fealty to Covid sharia has been very satisfying. This is now the 3rd school year interrupted by campus lockdowns, and colleges seem as committed now as they were two years ago to locking down. More please.

Colleges Extend Remote Instruction (Inside Higher Ed – 01/10/2022)

Some institutions that began the semester online are now pushing their return-to-campus dates further out in response to Omicron, citing spiking numbers and breakthrough infections.

If “remote learning” is still around in Fall of 2022, we will have had four-consecutive school years that involved classroom closures. (The last full “normal” school year was 2018 - 2019.) Again, this is a beautiful thing. We are getting further and further away from incoming freshman having a concept of what college was like in the pre-Covid days.

In an era when the education one gets from college can be obtained online for a fraction of the cost (or for free, actually) it is “the college experience” and associated networking that has kept the cartel in place.

With university administrators now acting like prudish church ladies who disapprove of any socializing or pleasures in life, colleges are killing off their primary selling point. Godspeed to them. Please keep it up.

A.J. Kay formerly wrote for Medium, but she had her entire catalog of stories pulled from Medium for expressing wrongthink about Covid and its impact on kids. Her child started college at an elite East Coast university, struggled with the lockdowns, and finally ended up thriving at a conservative Christian university that did not lock down. (I can tell from the picture in the thread that it is Hillsdale.)

A.J. is grateful that her daughter is getting a traditional, albeit somewhat conservative, college experience. Above all else, it is a blessing that Covid kept her daughter from ingesting the poisonous leftism of elite-college indoctrination. Here is Ms. Kay’s thread, extracted for easier reading:

AJ Kay - Twitter.JPG

In March 2020, my just-turned-18-year-old was told not to return to her ultra-liberal, elite, east coast university that she had worked her ass off to get into. She finished the semester online. In the fall of 2020, she took personal leave after learning the C19 restrictions…

…which included: - being socially isolated - living alone on campus - masks in and outdoors - no clubs or in-person events - online classes - mandated weekly testing - take-out meals only, and - harsh punishment and public shaming—including expulsion—for breaking C19 rules…

That’s not what college is about. College is about learning and growing and exploring and becoming more independent and dating and joining clubs and eating shitty cafeteria food *with* friends and all-nighters and moving forward…

So tried desperately to stay optimistic, hoping the hysteria would fade. She was so lonely. Come April, she’d decided on a fall return. Restrictions had eased w/ the vaccine rollout & the elderly faculty were now protected. And then her school mandated vaccines for students…

She thought they might rescind with pushback, but they didn’t. So she called her Dean & walked away from school - and a $75K/yr scholarship and 3.9 GPA. We got on a plane, retrieved her belongings from storage across from her dorm, & flew home w/ no idea what might come next.

She knew she wanted to go back to school so she began seriously looking for schools where life was normal & no one was forced to vaccinate. It was not an easy search but I was also so glad she didn’t give in. The mandates weren’t bringing back normal life, as promised.

We queried our many friends in academia. I put a call out on Twitter. We kept hearing one particular school named over & over. So we looked into it. It was an unexpected pivot but, the deeper she looked, the more she realized her values aligned with theirs. So she applied…

I was trepidatious. We are city people. This school was very rural. I’ve been a registered Dem my entire adult life and this school was decidedly conservative. Our family is not religious. There’s was strong faith-based component. And no full ride. Seemed like a stretch…

But this past Sat night, in the freezing rain, I got this pic of her as we walked the campus of her new school and just looking at it brings me to tears. She looks alive again. She’s been waiting 2yrs for her adult life to begin & it’s finally happening. She’ll be 20 in Feb…

As I type this, she’s in a big, beautiful house accepting a sorority bid and celebrating with her soon-to-be sisters. She had new student orientation earlier today & met transfers who landed there for the same reason she did. She’s not alone anymore. School starts Weds…

And because of that cognitive reframe, she’s *finally* getting back to learning, growing, exploring, becoming more independent, dating, joining clubs, pledging, eating shitty cafeteria food *with* friends, pulling all-nighters & moving forward…

I tend to believe that the college experience can have as many downsides as upsides, but at least this young lady is not getting anti-American communist indoctrination with her college experience. Any story in which a young person rejects a leftist education is a happy story.

If there’s one thing that the left-wing college establishment loves to do, it’s poke a finger in the eye of us stuffy old conservatives. We’re opposed to lockdowns, so they are locking down hard. Please, college administrators, keep teaching us a lesson with your rigid Covid obedience. You can make your point about how backward and bigoted we are by maintaining remote learning for a couple more semesters. Heck, if you really want to teach us a lesson, keep classrooms closed in perpetuity...until all viruses have been entirely eradicated.

“Zero classes until zero viruses” is a motto we can all embrace.

Just checked the class roster. It's half the size of the last three classes I taught. Interesting.

14 As someone who works for an institution of higher ed, I'm not too thrilled about potentially losing my job.

That being said, my institution is a much smaller cog in a larger state university machine. The "mothership" always treats us like a red-headed stepchild and is constantly scheming on how it can grab money donated to us.

I think we have some options for privatization if necessary because of the alumni who support us and the companies who rely on us as a pipeline for quality STEM employees.

That is an astonishing figure. That implies that college enrollment is around 18.4 million people. That means that an astonishing 5.6% of the entire US population, about 17.5% of the population aged 20-45 and a staggering 47% of the population aged 15-25.

That's a crazy level of enrollment.

They won't let her attend her on-line courses until she gets the covid vaccination. On-line courses. She has taken and passed multiple courses in which she has never stood in the presence of her teacher or fellow classmates. And yet, they insist she get the shot. She's not going to get the shot, so the medical profession is poorer one advanced level practitioner.

Good job U.T. U.T. is doing this in defiance of Abbott's "No mandates" edict. Haven't heard what, if anything, he is going to do about it. Hope at the very least he pulls funding for the University system. We shall see.

And something that I will say over and over again big "elite" institutions offer no substantial increase of quality of education. If someone really wants a college education, go local, go small and really put your effort into this classes.

Government, in essence, only has two available responses to any given problem: guns and butter.

They can compel you to do something (guns) or pay for you to do something (butter). That's it. There are no other responses. It's always naked compulsion or bribery, because the government actually produces nothing and so can't fill in any other blank.

Of the two, butter is the preferred method. So when the government goes to solve a problem, they hurl money at the problem. And when you hurl money at a problem, you cause inflation. So it has been with college education. They went to "solve the college cost crisis" in earnest in the 1980s, and college costs have done nothing but escalate at a blistering pace ever since. The moment the government stops throwing money at that particular problem, it will solve itself pretty quickly. And involve a huge crash in enrollment and big spike in institutional bankruptcy. So be it.

"The purpose of a public education in a public school is not to teach kids only what parents want them to be taught. It is to teach them what society needs them to know."

That is the line, and it always has been for as long as there has been public school. The problem, as always, is the false choice (as if voters and taxpayers should have no say in public services, education philosophy notwithstanding) and the always enormous problem of determining what "society" means. Who is "society?" Who is the public? What is their good?

Well, if you're involved in contemporary education - and all education since the 1900s - all of that is determined by John Dewey's vision. And his vision was nasty indeed.

Let's assume 1970. I don't know if it was 1970, but it should be close enough for government work.

In 1970, median family income in the US (Census) was $9,870. Your $600 tuition was 6.1% of national median family income.

In 2020, University of Illinois tuition was $15,150 in-state, $32,600 out-of-state. National median family income (Census) was $67,521. The in-state tuition was 22.5% of national median and out-of-state was 48%.

Assuming you were an IL resident and got in-state tuition, and that 1970 is close enough to the mark, the University of Illinois in-state tuition is now 3.7x more expensive on a national median income basis.

Her thoughts were that she could be "miserable and bored" at home for far less money. As this involved living in her father's home office, it was kind of miserable...

She is now at UT ( I know, but better than U of Az). We will see how this works out. Neither of her parents finished college, so it's important to them that the kids go.

149 Good for the Canadian truckers. I can easily see this vax mandate for border crossings just resulting in truck companies changing up schedules with employees that chose to vaccinate being assigned short hops back and forth and loads handed off to the purebloods. It is both the blessing and curse of smallish business ingenuity.

Because they find workarounds for stupid government red tape the population doesn't learn the hard lesson to demand the pols cut red tape instead of wrapping more and more around the economy.

169 "College was always expensive"

**

It was, but it was an attainable expensive. We've discussed it here before. Up until 1990 or so people could work full time in the summer and part time in the school year and have no debt while attending a state school.

That changed at almost the exact same time everyone in academia strangely decided that every student was college material and everyone should take out loans to attend college. It was all on purpose to support an educational industry, and had little to nothing to do with the kids.

IIRC Hogmartin mentioned an actual research paper out of Michigan that has all the details on the financial aspect of the shift.

I suspect she is. Based on the information provided, it implies that 47% of the 15-25 population is enrolled in college. This is higher than any value I can find from the federal DOE (and the age ranges don't match Census rollups, of course), but it is closest to the DOE top-line figure of ~41% of the 18-24 population being in some kind of higher education, be it 2-year schools or 4-year schools. So in order to get to the total student body population implied by the decline (18.4 million persons), it will have to include the enrollment outside of traditional 4-year residential colleges and universities.

They shouldn't. That's still secondary education, not post-secondary (albeit high-achievement secondary). But then, the numbers involved in the "declined by 5.1 percent across the board, with 937,500 fewer students enrolled at American colleges and universities" assessment are so huge that it makes me raise an eyebrow since according to the federal DOE, total enrollment in 2019 was 16.6 million students, not the 18.4 million implied by the movement quoted.

They found two million more students somewhere, but I have no clue where they found them or how they defined them.

That always puzzled me. The state pays the school to operate and also pays students to go there. Then the instructors get paid $17 per hour to do what is supposed to be the primary service offered by the school, which is to teach.

232 My DD is enjoying her at home in state college experience. We are making it worth our practically full tuition money, which living at home and being in state isn't bad...and she avoids ALL testing and almost all Covid requirements as offsite, so that's been a total blessing.

I will say, I mentioned last week my DD getting 3 interviews for summer camp counselor jobs from 3 resumes. Part of the reason they were so fast was she put 2 university music instructors she's had (her choir leader and her private tutor) on as her recommendations...and one responded so fast, that my daughter hadn't finished all the click thrus on the online app.

So, I'm even happier that this U is still interested in "helping employ their students" b/c that's why my kids go to college. If they were handy or tech savvy, we'd probably skip, but mine aren't...for us, it's transactional, not life-finding...

Easily. It is not covering tuition, it's covering full freight - tuition, room, board and probably also labs and books. My alma mater - a mid-tier private college that is nothing special outside of their three flagship programs - is up to $65.5k total cost of attendance per year before any student aid is applied.

Go for a bigger and more elite school and $75k is less than the full freight. Take NYU for an example. Pre-aid total cost there is $77.6k.

Yeah, my suspicion is that they are hoping to use a proxy for their annual layoffs that will allow them to virtue-signal instead of being the fat cat bad guys who fire people every year. If that's the case, then they're assuming that those who are opposed to the shots for whatever reason are the same people they don't want because they're dead weight on the organization. 317 "Couer en sabot" is a phrase used in cardiology and radiology describing the silhouette on a chest x-ray of the heart of a person with the congenital heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot. The phrase was originally coined in France (duh) and refers to the upturned tip of the left ventricle resembling a classical sabot with its upturned toe. In American parlance it has morphed into "boot-shaped heart".

It is unusual to see it these days as most tetralogy patients have their defect surgically repaired early in childhood before they develop the classic x-ray shape.

All of my grades got better on tests, I wasn't commuting to campus after work, I wasn't paying for parking or dinner, and I had more free time to myself. I didn't have to sit in a classroom where the teacher was reading from completely prepared slides, I got to ignore everyone else, and could multitask while in class, reading the news or whatever on the internet.

My work paid for most of the degree, and after getting it, it further cemented my disdain for electric vehicles. I had just spent the last 4 years of my free time learning exactly why electric vehicles are not the future, and I would talk with every single professor about stuff they wouldn't mention in class.

We are at least 30 years off from widespread acceptance of electric vehicles. And that timer doesn't start until energy density can improve at least 20 to 30 times what it is right now. Then we need the infrastructure to handle all the electric vehicles, and all of the electricity being run in homes and businesses.

360 Daughter went to Purdue. Record incoming class. In person education, commitment to free speech and inquiry. I wonder if there's a connection to the fact that they've grown? It doesn't hurt that they've kept tuition under control, too.

Yeah, she's loving it. Sorority, loves the bible study at her sorority, already a Greek VP as a soph, loving her Stats major, geeking out with other geeks at a STEM-focused university, working her butt off but learning a bunch. I approve.
