Devin Nunes vs. Big Tech

While driving to the city Thursday to buy a new cell phone for DH, I happened to hear part of the first radio interview of Devin Nunes since he left Congress earlier this month to head up the Trump Media & Technology Group. The first project of this new company will be a social media platform, to compete with the Big Tech platforms that cancel, suspend or hide people for their political views. We've all seen this happen.

youtwitface.jfif

For a limited time, you can hear the entire Nunes interview on the Ray Appleton Podcast for January 13, hour 2. It's 40 minutes long, with listener input. (If the podcast dates don't show for you, try a different browser).

I also discovered that the day before, Appleton had spoken with Victor Davis Hanson about Nunes and his switch from Congress to the Trump organization. They also speculated about whether Trump would run for president again. Trump will be holding a rally in Arizona this afternoon. Maybe we'll get some clues then.

The Appleton podcast segment with VDH runs about 12 minutes, with a few more minutes in which VDH and Appleton discuss California issues. You can find the VDH interview at the same link as the Devin Nunes interview above. January 12, hour 2.

VDH pointed out that Nunes was tenacious in standing up to the left in Congress. He and Appleton had a hard time coming up with names of others in Congress who were similarly tenacious in standing up to the left. Can you think of any? They also discussed how life for a California conservative in Congress could be difficult.

Starting a new social media company in today's climate also sounds to me like a venture fraught with potential pitfalls. In his interview, Nunes seemed to recognize Big Tech as a foe every bit as formidable as the ones he faced in Congress, perhaps even more formidable. He also views the legislative process in Washington as having fallen into disarray.

Nunes seems determined to leave politics behind, even wiping Adam Schiff from his memory banks. He has a new challenge.

In the interview, he mentioned a book he wrote. This was a short Encounter book entitled Countdown to Socialism. It came out in September of 2020, before the election. One came to our house (not in Nunes' district) in the name of our nephew, whom I doubt was registered as a Republican. Maybe one of his friends put him on a list when he was living in Tulare.

countdown to socialim.jpg

It is very short, and an easy read.

. . . In this explosive Encounter Broadside, Congressman Devin Nunes exposes the nexus between the Democratic Party, the mainstream media, and the social media corporations. These three entities cooperate to blast out the Democrats' message and downplay their extremism while suppressing and censoring conservative points of view. Tens of millions of Americans are only seeing one side of the debate. The information they get from newspapers and social media is not "news"--it's contrived content designed to help one political party and punish its opponents. In the run-up to the most consequential election of our lifetime, read this book to learn how your information is being skewed and regulated to force America onto the path to socialism. . .

This little book may have played a role in Trump's decision to ask Nunes to head up his new company.

Incidentally, a month later, just before the election, the paperback edition of Lee Smith's book The Plot Against the President came out with a new subtitle: The True Story of How Congressman Devin Nunes Uncovered the Biggest Political Scandal in U.S. History

plot against t.jpg

. . . While popular opinion holds that Russia subverted democratic processes during the 2016 elections, the real damage was done not by Moscow or any other foreign actor. Rather, this was a slow-moving coup engineered by a coterie of the American elite, the "deep state," targeting not only the president, but also the rest of the country. The plot officially began July 31, 2016 with the counterintelligence investigation that the FBI opened to probe Russian infiltration of Donald Trump's presidential campaign. But the bureau never followed any Russians. In fact, it was an operation to sabotage Trump, the candidate, then president-elect, and finally the presidency. The conspirators included political operatives, law enforcement and intelligence officials, and the press. The plot was uncovered by Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and his investigative team. They understood that the target of the operation wasn't just Trump, but rather the institutions that sustain our republic. A country where operatives use the intelligence and security services to protect their privileges by spying on Americans, coordinating with the press, and using extra-constitutional means to undermine an election then undo a presidency is more like the third world than the republic envisioned by the founding fathers. Without Nunes and his team, the plot against the president -- and against the country -- never would have been revealed. . .

VDH emphasized this issue in the interview mentioned above.

In 2010, when he had much less influence in Congress, Devin Nunes wrote another little book, Restoring the Republic.

restorring republic.jpg

Born and raised in the breadbasket of California, thirty-six-year-old Nunes has seen firsthand how the convergence of big government, big business, and the radical Left has wreaked havoc on entire communities, turning the once-thriving farmland of the San Joaquin Valley into a blighted desert reminiscent of the Dust Bowl. Now the same forces are doing their damage on a national level, threatening America's very foundation. But Nunes has a plan to stop them.

I suspect that this would have been an extremely difficult plan to carry out in Washington D.C. Wishing Nunes success in the struggle to interrupt Big Tech's takeover of our lives, in ways big and small. The new social media platform is scheduled to launch in March. They promise no algorithms, and much less intrusiveness.

Incidentally, a little tip for the tech-illiterate like me:

It can be a minor ordeal to transfer your contacts from an old Android phone to a new one if your phone's contacts have not always been synched to your Google account. You may need to look up how to import some contacts on the SIM card (from the old device, now in the new phone) to your Google account before they will show up on the new phone. Amazing. Your phone cannot display the contents of the SIM card inside it without your Google account. Google knows practically everything about you.

Music and communication from a simpler time

Hope you have something nice planned for the weekend.

This is the Thread before the Gardening Thread.

2 Good morning! I missed all the WWII conversations in the ONT. I am reading a book called "Hell's Angels" not about the motorcycle gang, but about the USAAF 303rd air group in Britain 19942-1945.
There were lots of casualties, as we all know. One story of note is about a waist gunner on a B17 whose plane was cut in half by a German fighter. He was ejected, with a parachute, but since he was unconscious, he didn't deploy it. He fell from 20,000 feet, like a sack of potatoes, into a German barn. He survived, received good medical treatment (28 broken bones) was taken as a POW, later liberated. Amazing story.

I think he's the man for the moment. The '24 - '28 term is going to be hand to hand combat to continue the fight to gut DC. Trump is an inelegant blunt instrument but he's our inelegant blunt instrument and he is a man on a mission to exact retribution. Trump is a street fighter and he's now 4 years smarter on how DC operates.

In my perfect scenario he would DeSantis as his VP and give him a real portfolio of domestic policy to enact and then DeSantis could run-in '28 with a much cleaner field to really rebuild the country the right way.

You branded, without any scientific basis, people who chose not to get vaccinated as enemies of the public and as spreaders of disease. You promote, in an unprecedented way, a draconian policy of discrimination, denial of rights and selection of people, including children, for their medical choice. A selection that lacks any epidemiological justification.

When you compare the destructive policies you are pursuing with the sane policies of some other countries -- you can clearly see that the destruction you have caused has only added victims beyond the vulnerable to the virus. The economy you ruined, the unemployment you caused, and the children whose education you destroyed are the surplus victims as a result of your own actions only."

52 I've always contended that without the media the Democrats would lose their messaging and thus be forced to stand on their platform alone. If you listen to them, actually any politician, very few can articulate their position and thoughts with any clarity. Most of them are used to having someone else "do the talking" for them... typically the media which gets its talking points from congressional staffers. The politicians themselves are unable to put in words what they're trying to do. Try listening to Pelosi sometime. It's not entirely the vodka or dementia that makes her sound insane. Yet the media will post her message with all the insanity removed.

The media, and by extension "Big Tech" are truly evil and need to be addressed kinetically.

That it actually allows free speech. Which means yes, racism, anti-semitism, whatever the hell you want to take about.

And

That you actually have to be a member of the community in order to access what the community is saying to each other. Google and Amazon and other big techs don't like that either. They want a free peak at whatever you are talking about and thinking about so they can track your data hi, low and everywhere in between.

For some positions, you actually have to have experts on the subject and experienced with policy making. The problem for an outsider is that experts pretty much simply regurgitate what they have done before because that is how they got where they are. Basically, outsiders are always limited in what can be accomplished because of the dead weight of 'experts'. Insiders are always limited because they simply cannot contemplate destruction of the existing order to build something new.

So, unfortunately, it usually takes a great calamity to grant a leader or leaders sweeping powers to rejuvenate a system and sweep away the dead weight of rancid elites. Most of the time, those sweeping powers are used for the benefit of the leader(s) and not for the citizens. American Revolution was a rare counter example in history along with some other counter examples such as Konrad Adenauer in post war W. Germany.

I always consider how low the left has gone in the past and the trend line that always dips lower. I can see a strategy on the left to suddenly open up all the data on the vax, reveal the VAERs database as being off by a magnitude of 10X, throw Fauci under the bus, and conspire with the EU to hold Nuremberg 2.0 with Trump front and center.

Fauci will then testify under oath that he warned Trump of all the side effects, warned him that animal studies had not been performed, and generally turn world opinion against Trump. Required witnesses are kept in secure locations, under guard, and not permitted to leave until the trial has completed. Sometime months after the election.

I don't want it to be this way, but this is the way the left plays.

Because essentially politics has become a pseudo religion for Dems as they increasingly move to atheism. Note that often the most vitriolic comments are about religion here--not politics. Money is fungible and dividable. Social policies and norms of what is right and wrong are not.

Trump's greatest supporters aren't freedom-people. They are feudalists who want their own people in charge. They support wealth confiscation and redistribution, so long as the money goes to their own pet causes.

In short, most of the country wants and expects a government solution to every problem, and this tacks with Trump's own style. The difference for most people is whether it's patriotic to want the UN to run everything, or more patriotic to have the President run everything.

I view Graham as a reliable weathervane in the GOP. When he came out the other day and said he wouldn't vote for any GOP Senate leader that couldn't get along with Trump I saw that as a powerful indicator of who is really running the ship.

At the beginning of the week a Trump endorsed primary challenger to Rep. John Katko of NY entered the race. Yesterday, Katko, one of the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, dropped out.

The GOP gets more Trumpy everyday.

Disagree.

1. He respected federalism. He would have been called a dictator (and rightly so) hade he sent in federal forces on his own. It's crazy that local leftists and media embraced the rioting.

2. Early on we didn't know for sure how Covid would play. Scaremongering was the order of the day. Remember Andy's Grammy-winning daily pressers.

We needed a quick jolt of big spending else the collapse in spending would have spiraled us into a real depression.

That's not true. He took money from the tariffs and gave some it to industries that were being punished by the Chinese in response to the tariffs but that's not picking winner and losers.

I can't speak for every state but here in Pennsylvania it is almost certain that totals were 're-arranged' by way of data base software. Who the hell could see that coming? Protocols to make certain voting machines were swept clean of such software were not followed.

In the end the Supreme Court or Mike Pence could have called a short 'time-out' for each state to spend some time taking a second look at numbers before the EC vote. Trump won, but lost.

His first point last - you can work really hard and have all the best intentions and still be a collosal failure. But you'd need to able to separate yourself from your love of Trump in order to honestly appraise the performance of the last duly-elected President - the man who presided over the death of the republic.

The man who watched a dictator installed, rolled over, and told his supporters to do the same. Not as much nostalgia for people who are too young to have much to look back on. Besides, many of them are still trying to deal with the deep intellectual challenges of which gender they are. Most of us older types have cracked that mystery already.

Gab is corporate so there's still someone calling the shots. The only true free speech platform is a decentralized network that has no single owner or chain of command. Unfortunately, there are few such entities and the very nature of the problem means that they cannot function as a one-stop shop for everyone ala Facebook. His wife filed charges but the court ruled that the worker should have refused to do it. Of course, he would have lost his job if he'd done that. It seemed like a switch flipped and he went from taking attention off of hrc every time a new scandal broke, to attacking and winning. Maybe someone clued him in to what the FIB was doing. Maybe he saw what the left had planned once the fab was in office. I don't know. But something lit a fire in him.

(Also recall that at the onset no one knew how bad Covid was going to be.) Firing Fauci would have led to howling about not following the experts' advice. So I give him a skip on that.

Re BLM-Antifa, Trump offered help, but the Red-infested cities declined it. The Reds wanted him to intervene so that they could blame him for the riots, but he declined to tackle that tar baby, letting the Reds stew in the bed they just shat. Even Seattle - whose dyke mayor clearly wanted someone else to clean up her mess - eventually had to climb down from her "summer of love" horseshit and take steps against her political confreres.

Tariffs are not paid by the Chinese. They are paid by you, the consumer. Tariffs are a tax on imports meant to 'encourage' you to buy local by making cheap imports less competitive.

From the birth of America up till 1913, the federal government subsisted mainly on tariffs applied to all imported goods. I'm all-in for this. It's fair (doesn't allow politicians to pick winners and losers) and it keeps the federal apparatus lean.

Most addictions are pretty bad, they screw up the benefit and risk calculations in search of the high. That is true for everything from alcohol to mixing meth and heroin.

We have had drugs scheduled since Wilson, and a war on drugs since Nixon, and IIRC the rate of addiction in the US has been fairly flat or increasing, no matter what the policies have been.
There is some work done on figuring the effect of prohibition and embargoes on the market, and it shows a trend to higher value and lower bulk items because of the need for moving it concealed. In the case of drugs and alcohol, it is the same, with higher potency as well.

The main purpose of this constellation of laws appears to be to legislate morality and enforce behavior, and the actual result is to give the state greater power to arrest, regulate and create pretexts to violate rights. In practice it also sets out a money tree for corruptable officials to shake, and in turn be compromised.

385 All of the analysis of how bad Trumped fucked up and how it cost him a second term overlook one little detail.

Trump won in 2020. Easily. His victory was stolen. Anyone who still think drooling Joe Biden got 81 million votes while campaigning in his basement is not being serious.

Name me one other Republican who could have not only withstood the non-stop onslaught he took for 3 years while producing the best economy in generations, record low unemployment, the most secure border in decades with a wall 90% complete despite getting no help from the GOP and constant obstruction from the left, no new wars and a record number of peace deals in the Middle East and still won reelection that was only stopped by massive cheating.

Ah, the lovely trainset in the basement where every inconvenient sin of man is removed so that it doesn't spoil Utopia.

Widespread use of opium sure worked wonders for China.

Also, ask Law Enforcement what is easier to remove criminal scum from the street - waiting for them to have a backseat full of stolen car radios only to have a good defense attorney plea it out, or put them away for time for possession?

It ain't perfect, but it also isn't your imaginary trainset in the basement either.

well, for the first there would be some sort of witch hunt, and the corrupt politicians would lose a lot of spending money and influence, so I doubt it would go far.

Murder, rape, fraud and robbery are crimes against persons, in that they violate a person's rights, person and belongings (and a person's principal belonging is his self ownership and self determination) and is not a moral issue.
If you try to claim that taking someone's life or assaulting him is just a moral issue, then you are claiming that living is just legislative issue, or one governed by tradition and community consensus. And that will change over time and in the face of changing economic conditions and fads. Like wearing hats.

Solid history in technology and the pitfalls of being an 'early adopter'. I've spent too many hours of my life trying to make something work which has hopelessly rushed to market. That's one group, which no doubt numbers in the tens of millions.

Second group, also probably numbering in the tens of millions, is women of childbearing age. Who can blame or vilify them for seeking the healthiest of offspring possible? The drug thalidomide may not be part of their thought process, but it should.

Third group is African-Americans who most certainly know of the Tuskegee syphilis experiment which is a true stain on our history. Once again tens of millions. These three groups (there are probably more) are going to get revenge on the left wing media and leftist politicians in November.

My Small Government, Big L Libertarian friends (one that actually ran for political office on the L ticket) tell me that this legalizing Schedule I drugs (they never speak of legalizing prescription drugs) would be accompanied by taxing the product and the proceeds used to underwrite addiction recovery services.

yes, they want more taxes and more government in exchange for higher addiction rates and more catastrophes that seem to follow drug abuse.

450 One thing that is truly amazing to me--and it would have been completely unlikely pre-Trump--is that NO ONE appears to be running FROM Joe Biden.
He has cratering poll numbers, people are starting to see how decrepit and out of touch and nasty he is, and he is losing court battles. The economy is crashing, and yet STILL he (his junta) controls the party, Democrat governors and mayors--and some corporations-- are still willing to do his bidding re: vaccine mandates and he still has the support of the news and entertainment media,
He's the very definition of a LOSER, and in the past, people would be RUNNING away from him.

So I exploited my Business Plus Samsclub membership and came in on opening and headed to the meat market where I was delighted to find (and bought) six thick slabs of USDA Prime rib eye steaks at a significant discount making them the priced between Select and Choice.

I converted one steak into fajitas and made four monster fajitas that fed two hungry people for $15. Tell me where I can go and get USDA Prime Ribeye fajitas for two for that price.

That's always their argument when it comes to it, more government funded and provided treatment. They should be saying they question the whole concept of addiction, that maybe drugs aren't addictive and it's just an excuse for a lack of willpower. That would be the free will argument.

I hope to God that I am wrong on this. And that really is where I am these days.

I remember back in the 90s when many people, devout and sincere people of faith would form prayer teams to petition to keep Billy Jeff Clinton out of office. God had other plans.

I give up and giving God advice; I'm now just watching to see how it plays out.

Posted by: Reuben Hick

"I can beat you until you consent to anything I demand" is a valid ruling strategy, it is what is used in North Korea, for example. To make it work beyond an individual basis requires enough people to dominate the rest, and a method to make sure the dominating class doesn't t try to prey on each other.

I think you are saying that custom and morality guarantee individual rights, but you haven't addressed where the customs and morality come from other than, I guess, long practice and customary use.
You can go with that, or you can ask "why is this custom to believe this way and why is it moral" and ask what is being served by all this.
Custom and Morality are poor things to base a belief system on since both have changed since our grandfathers were born, and those are the very things the Progressives attack

476 Custom and Morality are poor things to base a belief system on since both have changed since our grandfathers were born, and those are the very things the Progressives attack

Morality is traditionally understood to be a transcendent value system. Otherwise it would just be a synonym for "values". Morality therefore must have an immutable origin and easily discernable provenance - otherwise it is just Customs and Values.

It doesn't serve any purpose to deconstruct the word "Morality" so that it loses its punch in the very profound understanding that you and I, nor anyone else has the authority to change or define it - only to recognize and abide with it.

This is why the redefinition of "Marriage" is an obscenity since a handful of people, including black robed pagans, took a look at an institution that is clearly transcendent, that is, observed relatively unmolested for the entire expanse of recorded human history in every culture, tribe and land, and declared by simple fiat that it no longer means what it has meant for millennia.

Why do "I" or "You" or We" HAVE to do something about the personal decisions of other adults? From my perspective, the only thing we have to do is arrest people when their behavior crosses the line to violate the rights of others. First of all, it is clear that you don't value second or third order effects. In your statement every vice is committed on an otherwise deserted island. Show me I'm wrong.

Second, there is a large community of people who can and will argue that they are somehow their Brother's Keeper. This is the motivation of the Nanny State. As much as you want to leave people alone, they want to intervene even more. So how do you tell them that their value system is null and void and they should not exercise their vision because yours prevails on your own authority?

513 Trump was in a political corner. It was part of the operation. Trump likes situations where he can win either way.

They put him in a lose-lose, and he decided to go for the one that involved steadiness and reelection and then (very likely) doing whatever the fuck he wanted to do.

Which was the greatest path to a win out of a lose-lose but they managed the Steal and the rest is history.

514 With percocet, people were able to get a prescription and use a known manufacturer/ dose. Then the government cracked down on pill mills and the addicts turned to the black market. The dealers purchased pill presses and blocks of cheap fentanyl and made their own vicodin, percocet, oxycodone and xanax forgeries. Addicts started overdosing when they unknowingly bought fentanyl pills and took what they thought was their normal dose of oxys. As I said earlier- that is what took tom petty, hoffmann, prince, and probably saget.

That assumes that I am a champion of incarceration and government persecution.

I'm an advocate of restitution for property crimes, and if a person is too dangerous to be in public, neutralized according to community standards which may include cities of refuge, or capital punishment.

Jury is still out for me on Tooth-For-Tooth. I can see benefits, but also a lot of negatives. For one, there needs to be a restoration of the principle that false testimony results in the punishment for the crime under trial to be suffered by the false witness - that includes prosecutors.

Love the idea of it. But the problem, in the case of say, r*pe, is if a true victim has a chance of suffering the consequences of a false accusation, that is just demented. Imagine if you will, a victim of a Kennedy being "proven" to be a false accuser.

That is unimaginable to me and yet as we've seen they would do it in a *heartbeat*. A double or triple indignity. Worse they would simply use the threat of it to keep (already reticent) victims from coming forward.

Did you see any of the summer videos of Kensington in Philly the past summer? There's a YT update as of last month.

People bent over at the waist in some sort of drug induced coma every hundred feet, tents set up everywhere, trash everywhere.

I drove those same streets when I was young. If this shit is coming from China than there is insufficient mega-tonnage in our arsenal to give them a ground blast of what they deserve. Any politician taking money from them should be strapped to each missile.

630 587 have a dilemma. My best friend for over 25 years kicked me to the curb last Jan. out of the blue. Got texts during the holidays and today, she has been texting me for hours. I'm wary. Something is up, just don't know what.

Either she wants something or she wants to make up.

I dated a lady that kicked me to the curb because I would be vaxxed. While I would love to hear from her with a contrite apology, which I would accept, I cannot get over the fact that she thinks she is smarter than she really is.
Posted by: Been Lurking, but clearly been posting too at January 15, 2022 04:27 PM (smVBh)

Fox live feed said they are a congregation of people who *have relocated from other parts of the country*
so carrying is probably offensive to them.

He also said they are a Reform congregation.

633 Well, the hostage taking Muz ain't exactly wrong in saying "there's something wrong with this fucking country."

There is.

Just not what he's thinking. And, yea, I can see someone in the junta giving the 'tard a "good idea" and suggest letting this nutters' sister out of prison. To avoid "bloodshed."

Deliver her to him. In a bag.

638 There was a photo of the rabbi and he is fairly young; and while it might have just been the angle of his head -- it was a frontal shot -- I didn't see a yarmulke so maybe they're a Reformed congregation that's not too pro-2nd?? [Mere speculation on my part, I admit.] And it was just four people and not the whole congregation as well.
