Unexpectedly, Retail Sales Fell a Huge 1.9% This Christmas Season

ididthat.jpg

As you probably know, "Black Friday" is so named because it begins the holiday shopping season when retailers' books start going from the red they've been running all year to the black.

The books won't be quite so black this year. Maybe still a little bloody.

Retail sales fell much more than expected in December as surging prices took a big bite out of spending, the Commerce Department reported Friday.

The advance monthly sales report to close out the year showed a decline of 1.9%, considerably worse than the Dow Jones estimate for just a 0.1% drop.

Excluding autos, sales fell 2.3%, a number that also fell well short of expectations for a 0.3% rise.

In addition to the weak December numbers, the November gain was revised down to 0.2% from the initially reported 0.3% increase.

Considering that the sales numbers are not adjusted for inflation, the data point to a slow ending to what had otherwise been a strong 2021 in which sales rose 16.9% from the pandemic-scarred 2020.

Oh, 2021's sales at retailers rose from the year in which we were all locked in our homes and couldn't go to stores? Wow, what a strong year.

Also unexpectedly, consumer sentiment has tumbled, presaging lower economic activity to come as consumers delay spending and prepare for lean times.

U.S. consumer sentiment fell by more than expected in early January as rising prices dominated the pandemic and unemployment as the most serious problem facing the nation.

The University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment index tumbled to 2.5 percent to 68.8 from 70.6 in December, the second-lowest in a decade. The lowest reading was recorded in November. Analysts had forecast a reading of 70.4, little changed from the prior month.

Interesting that it is a different narrative than what went out in the news based on initial estimated data. The narrative last month - before Christmas - was that December would be a disappointing retail number because supply chain disruption fears pulled a lot of demand forward into November, which beat expectations.

In absolute terms. In real, inflation-adjusted terms, November wasn't actually all that great considering all the "pull-forward" that was supposed to have happened.

It looks the Commerce Department just failed to support that narrative and told something closer to the truth. Someone's gonna have some 'splaining to do.

Two things.
1. No shit. Surging prices, stagnant nominal wages, falling real wages and lack of consistent product availability isn't exactly a wonderful combination for consumer confidence. I am shocked it is above 50.
2. Analysts are almost always wrong, and the direction in which they're wrong correlates very nicely with who's in power.

I live fairly near the largest/densest retail area in the country. The two big malls are usually packed with cars and they are backed up onto the highways.

This year they were busy, but nowhere near what they were just a few years ago. And more telling, the traffic on the two main highways was a fraction of what it was.

We are seeing Hayek vs. Keynes play out in real time.

Trump / Hayek, the economy is organic, and government control is bad.

Obama / Biden / Keynes, the economy needs to be controlled through regulation, and the government needs to spend spend spend... and debt does not really matter.

Nixon took us off the gold standard in ...1971? For years, most people thought about economics the same way as before that. But in the last 20, the spending of "fiat" currency and economics have become totally disconnected. Our deficits now are YUGE, the national debt is YUGE, yet the floating crap game goes on.
The Democrats control the White House and both houses of Congress, and they can't actually get a budget through. More continuing resolutions on spending.

281 Obama / Biden / Keynes, the economy needs to be controlled through regulation, and the government needs to spend spend spend... and debt does not really matter.

Keynesian Economics COULD work - if Human Nature was anything different that what it is. Imagine a government that ran a modest surplus during good economic times, and instead of pissing that surplus away - saved it, and used that money during downturns to finance necessary projects ... thus evening out regular business cycles and also buying goods and labor at a discount.

But, of course, Keynesian Economics WILL NOT work - because politicians, like everyone else that seeks power, are assholes. However, the concept is sound.

But I'm also not going to sit here and pretend US leadership is morally superior to anyone. Until we root out the demons in our midst, we have no place criticizing anybody else's people.

420 385 Keynes operates under the assumption that it's okay for government to tax excessively, as long as the excess is put aside for future economic downturns.

Personally, I see a small problem with that premise.

The problem isn't merely that people would never execute according to the process he laid out. The problem is that it wouldn't work even if they did. Communism similarly has an information problem that couldn't be solved regardless if it were run by saints.

Not true. Keynes would indeed demand more. And he'd write your comments down, to have something to read when you missed the next meeting because your messenger bag hung in the spokes of your Vespa - you couldn't slow the damn thing down by dragging your crocs on the pavement - and you ended up in the hospital getting stitches in your calves where your capri pants didn't cover.

443 My comment may have been a little oblique. The "can't pace meatloaf" notion is that if you have a ventricle that is 90% infarcted, it doesn't matter how much electricity you apply, it isn't going to start beating again. If an economy is moribund from multiple prior rounds of stimulus spending, resuscitating it with another zap, even at a higher voltage, isn't going to work.

Biden's like Hawkeye Pierce screeching "Live, dammit!" during CPR. (Another technique that doesn't work, by the way)

Plenty of folks in power, with children and grand-children, seem to have no problem with printing money at a pace fast enough to collapse the country ... yet slow enough to make sure they die first.

Posted by: Loudon County Boy in a Dress at January 14, 2022 04:24 PM (nmahL)

448 Well, when you mandate the firing of millions of Americans out of petulant pique a month or two before Christmas, and commit to policies that drive 7% inflation, don't be surprised when they don't splurge on the GI Joe with the kung fu grip that your kid wanted under the tree. People tend to start hoarding bread and ammo under these predictable circumstances.

449 You know what's funny, I was arguing with a liberal former co-worker of mine about general politics. I asked him a simple question: name a single conservative policy that has been enacted in our lifetimes (this was around 2011 and we were each about 30 at the time).

He sat quiet for a second and then said, "Well, I guess there hasn't been."

Conservatism is a thing that actually has not been tried.

Bill Clinton's welfare reform was close - and 'unexpectedly' it got the rolls pretty clean very quickly. It took a 'lightbringer' Democrat to undo that work.

That's just pretend crap. They've also turned down all practical aid to Ukraine, diplomatic or military at the same time. Ukraine is a place where they, like Biden, can get US Tax money laundered through loans into bribes and a place to pretend they are empire builders like their forefathers.
