Posted by: Tinfoilbaby at January 17, 2022 *** I was startled by that the first time I went to NM. Also that a sopaipilla is pretty much a Nawlins beignet minus the powdered sugar. My first visit to NM was in May of '92, so it's been quite a while. A culture shock for me -- but I loved it. I immediately began planning to find a job and move there. I came close: Denver. The last time I was in Albuquerque or Santa Fe was about 2000. I miss the landscape, the scent of sage after a rain, the good roads (compared to Lousy-ana, anyway), and lots of other things. A shame it's become a blue pesthole. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at January 17, 2022 09:45 AM (c6xtn) 70

I have never heard of this artist but I quite like his work. There is a simplicity in the image with blocks of soft color against a simple blended background. It reminds me of Japanese ink and color prints I've seen. The tenderness of the mother towards her child reinforces the simple, gentle color scheme. The bright, rather realistic basket and peppers makes a nice contrast. Very appealing.

Daily Mail has revealed that between 1993-1995, the now-deceased convicted pedophile Jeffery Epstein brought a total of eight young women to the White House while he was meeting with then-president Bill Clinton.
Previous visitor logs from the White House have confirmed Epstein visited the White House a total of 17 times. His first visit to the White House was in 1993, shortly after Bill Clinton was inaugurated, and after that day he visited the White House 16 more times and also brought young women as guests. O/T, music question.
I just saw that "Mysterious Ways" by U2 was on top of the Billboard "Alternative Airplay" chart for nine weeks from the end of 1991 into 1992. Now, I know that this was a smash hit and its chart performance is not surprising. That said, why this chart? By what standard is that song - or anything by U2 - "alternative?" I'm puzzled as hell because if U2 is "alternative" then anything can be and the distinction is meaningless - even at the time when alternative was a major music phenomenon.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 17, 2022 10:26 AM (DU+/6) Probably is an artifact of their earlier days before they hit it big. Alternative rock radio played a lot of U2 in the early to mid 80s. Before they became YUUUGE. So those stations were still playing U2 when Achtung Baby came out in late 1991. I used to listen to 99.1 WHFS alt rock station in the Baltimore / DC area. They played U2 quite a bit. Posted by: Doof at January 17, 2022 10:30 AM (mZUr4) 236

++++ Now you've given me a problem, Doof. As a result of this comment, I now have a song lyric stuck in my head. I can't remember how it starts, but it ends with "but he's big in Japan" (or she, or I - I don't rightly remember the pronoun). I can even remember the tune and cadence of the lyric. But I can't remember the song, or any other words in it, and "big in Japan" is such a common phrase that I can't even search for it well. What's worse, I know that I have that song in my library but I don't remember enough of how it sounds to narrow it down. Now I'm going to go bonkers until I forget it again, because it's really nagging at me and I have no way to find the answer. I can't even search through my local library lyrics, because most songs don't have lyrics tagged to them yet (that's something I've been working on intermittently for years). So yeah. You've ruined my day through no fault of your own. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 17, 2022 10:34 AM (DU+/6) 249

------ Good question, Mannix. I know they tried to go all artsy after the success of the Joshua Tree album/concerts and Rattle and Hum movie. From a 2014 article at Salon entitled "How U2 became the most hated band in America ( https://tinyurl.com/2p8k6f8s ):" Although CBC cites "Discotheque" (from Pop, U2's much-derided experiment in excess) as the moment the public turned on them, it was most likely Apple that did U2 in. The wide success of 1991's Achtung Baby launched a decade-long experiment by the band into art rock, as Bono attempted to bring the avant garde into the mainstream. Although 1993's Zooropa won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album, Bono never wanted U2 to be an "alternative" (read: niche) group, your vinyl-hoarding friend's favorite band. My view is that we should stop saying things like, "take the vaccine or not, your choice." Sounds nice and warmly respectful but it's essentially irresponsible.
It's a bullshit, dangerous vaccine, and we should say that as a preface to whatever else we say. Posted by: Ordinary American at January 17, 2022 10:55 AM (H8QX8) 309

Posted by: Ian S. at January 17, 2022 10:55 AM (eabWM) Unfortunately, I'd say that the Twitter quote isn't wrong. The Voting Rights Act and the War On Poverty legislation passed because of MLK, but he was still alive when that happened. MLK was pivoting to Vietnam and larger societal issues when he was assassinated, so those didn't have enough traction to have his death change much. Floyd, on the other hand, was instrumental in turning our cities into crime-ridden hellholes - by choice - and it helped scare LIVs into thinking that voting for POOTUS would make the violence stop. We know how that has turned out, so far. Posted by: Darrell Harris at January 17, 2022 11:04 AM (mdjgu) 333
