Inflation Soared 7% In 2021, Making Brandon's First Year the Worst For Inflation in Forty Years

Inflation hasn't been this bad since the first time Biden was diagnosed as a mental degenerate.

ididthat.jpg

F*** Joe Biden.

Prices in December increased 0.5%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And while that's a lower jump than the 0.8% increase in November, there's not much to be excited about; the price for goods and services has increased 7% from Dec. 2020 to Dec. 2021, accounting for the highest inflation rate since 1982.

These items have seen some of the highest gains over the past 12 months:

Meats, poultry, fish and eggs: 12.5% increase
Fruits and vegetables: 5% increase
Electricity: 6.3% increase
Furniture and bedding: 13.8% increase
Women's dresses: 8% increase
Jewelry and watches: 7.2% increase
Rent of primary residences: 3.3% increase

Things like gasoline and airfare saw giant price increases over the last year, in part due to prices being deflated by lack of demand at the onset of the pandemic (used cars and trucks, for example, saw a 37.3% price increase from Dec. 2020 to Dec. 2021).

The Daily Mail ran this graphic:

Screenshot (1220).png

Even the White House's in-house newsletter the Washington Post struggles to put the Brandon-ordered positive spin on it.

The bumpy economic recovery has had policymakers, economists and Americans households grappling with greater price hikes for groceries, cars, rent and other essentials.

The latest inflation data, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed prices in December rose to a 40-year high, climbing 7.0 percent compared with the year before.

For months, officials at the Federal Reserve and White House argued that pandemic-era inflation will be temporary. But they've had to back away from that message, which was increasingly hard to square with what was happening in the economy -- and the way Americans experience it.

Related: Wrong-Way Brandon bumbles again.

It's an older incident but some (fake) audio has been added.

Update: Twitchy points out that the last time yearly inflation was this high, this was at the top of the charts.

^^this. The supply chain bottlenecks and the worker shortages and the energy production restrictions explain the HOW, but the WHY is that the federal government spent a lot of money it didn't have and instead of going to the market to borrow it and see interest rates rise to meet the demand, the Treasury sold bonds to the Fed and the Fed printed money to buy them, monetizing the deficit like a third world country. The Fed, in addition to printing all that money, kept the discount rate and Fed funds interest rates close to zero, giving the banks a lot of almost-free money to play with.

He really wanted to sign that relief bill that Nancy held onto until after the election that Biden did sign. The Fed, not under Trump's direct control of course, has been pumping money into the economy for about 2 years now.

Yeah, there'd be inflation, but the economy all around would probably be stronger when combined with Trump's anti-regulatory efforts along with a friendlier and more predictable environment for businesses to make decisions.

It would not be as bad, but I doubt Trump would have avoided inflation, especially at any level that the media would have let it slide.

Real wages are now down for the 9th straight month.

Illegal immigrants are flooding the lower end of the job market.

May economists directly have indicated the coup de grace was Democrats massive spending, not the pandemic as they claim. Their very lucid, material argument is that when you look across the globe, no other economy is suffering from the same kind of inflation due to the pandemic. This is demonstrably true.

To much cash chasing a finite supply of goods. And so yes, inflation is inevitable under these circumstances. "Build Back Better" would crank this up to 11.

And there is no easy remedy. In the late 70's, early 80's, Volker slowed down inflation with prime rate lending increases. That can't happen now, for obvious reasons.

186 The OER thing is, of course, flagrant legerdemain.

But Core CPI itself is a complete scam. And I mean, it's a *ridiculous* one.

They eliminated food and fuel from the price index on the grounds that prices for these things are "volatile," as if that volatility is important or something. It isn't. It may affect a quarter here and there with occasional inaccuracies. That's it. It is not an issue that causes chronic problems in describing our economy.

But what does removing it do? Well, the funny thing about food and fuel is there is nearly no price elasticity of demand in these goods. As such - *they reflect inflation almost perfectly.*

This has allowed them to hide the bulk of inflation for the whole economy. IT'S A SCAM. IT'S A SHELL GAME. And now they screw with the housing numbers too. They have removed all of the most important indicators so the press can pretend away our problems.

This is like if you made a price index for illegal drugs, but removed stimulants and opiates from it, and just tracked the price of marijuana.

'Today's report - which shows a meaningful reduction in headline inflation over last month, with gas prices and food prices falling - demonstrates that we are making progress in slowing the rate of price increases. At the same time, this report underscores that we still have more work to do, with price increases still too high and squeezing family budgets.

'Inflation is a global challenge, appearing in virtually every developed nation as it emerges from the pandemic economic slump. America is fortunate that we have one of the fastest growing economies - thanks in part to the American Rescue Plan-which enables us to address price increases and maintain strong, sustainable economic growth. That is my goal and I am focused on reaching it every day.'

251 Read a couple of articles over at Insty's this morning, about the crook Fauci. Early in 2020, Fauci had a confab with a bunch of immunologists and epidemiologists, who told him they were about 80% sure that the virus was lab made.

Fauci directed these same scientists to write up an article for Nature (it's called The Proximal Origin of Sars CoV-2), and say that the virus most likely originated in nature, and was not lab created.

The scientists wrote a draft of the article, then sent it to Fauci for edits and approval. The article was then published in Nature.

Fauci then goes on t.v. and says the virus wasn't lab made, it was natural, and he cites the Nature article as proof. Fauci doesn't mention his own role in creating the Nature article (his name appears nowhere on it), or the fact that it contradicts what the scientists who wrote the article had previously told him in the meeting.

Since the publication of the article, the scientists who wrote it have received more than $20 million in government grants, approved by . . . Fauci.

But just move along, folks, nothing to see here.

Fauci is completely trustworthy! Just ask him.

Reminds me of when I was teaching at the Army's Intelligence School. The Threat block of instruction was the cornerstone of what we did there. So at Graduatin for every Officer and NCO course, we'd run a slide show (with music) of that class and its time at the School. Wait until homeowners get their increase in their mortgage payments due to them having variable loans.

Oh, and their increases in property taxes because their assessments have gone up.

On top of the increases in their gas and electric bills.

Add all of that on top of all of the businesses that have closed in the past 2 years and you get a mashup of the 1991 recession and the 2008 recession. Fun times ahead.

That is a ridiculous increase in 5 years. This crash is gonna make 2008 look like a minor problem.

___

You think that's crazy? I bought a rental house in 2016 for $200K. It is worth $475K today. And rent on that house is almost 80% higher today than it was in 2016 as well.

I don't see it crashing though. The runup is due in part to an overall inflationary market. If everything is up 10%+ a year, of course housing will increase as well.

And here's the thing with that house. Even at 80% higher rent than 5 years ago, I have a line out the door if I put it up for rent. This is the new reality in prices.

That was actually one of the base problems with the whole Bundy Ranch debacle. Land was owned by the State, but administered by the Feds. Bundies had a longstanding agreement with the State, but the Feds came in and changed the rules, and got an environmentalist judge to agree with THEM, that the agreements with the Bundies no longer mattered.

But the real start was Harry Reid's Son needed water rights which ran through that land, to build a subdivision.

Zillow and Blackrock are parts of it, but the biggest part is the need for new housing stock. Currently, the US has a need for about 7M new housing units, but there is very little construction going on because of the cost of materials, and local governments wanting 4 houses on 1 lot housing density.

Plus, nobody really builds subdivisions of starter homes because the profit margins are razor thin especially since people want top line appliances and granite countertops throughout.

Zillow is out of that business since they couldn't make it profitable. And you're right this is a supply issue. Too few housing units to meet demand. Econ 101.

Part of the problem is the zoning. People don't want high density housing in their area. And for good reason. But the left is pushing to change this. CA has done away with single family housing zoning. Will this drive prices down? Maybe. But in exchange for that is you'll have Section 8 neighbors next to your $1M house.

Yeah, food prices at restaurants are insane, its 20 bucks for a fast food meal these days. I don't blame the owners. Personnel costs went up, food prices went up, supply prices went up, utility prices went up, taxes went up in a lot of places.

What are they supposed to do? They have to raise prices and eventually they'll raise them to the point people don't think its worth the cost any longer.

508 I didn't hear the speech, but it wouldn't surprise me, actually. McConnell is very good when it comes to defending the institution of the Senate. Where he falls a little short is defending the principles of conservatism, especially when he has all the help he needs from the White House.

Posted by: Darrell Harris

He is defending his own grift source. Absent the filibuster, the Rino chorus that McConnell brokers (some 10-15 senators) goes out of business during minority years. He depends on the filibuster and threat thereof to sell those votes to the Dems in those years.

Really, if the Senate is kept in session, there is no need for a filibuster removal as you can pass legislation under current senate rules by exhausting the list of speakers and their time. Takes weeks to do that but it can be done if the Senate is locked into session and even less if they go round the clock.

Of all the stupid shit from I've heard from our retard overlords with regard to forest mitigation, my two favorites are:

1.) You may not remove standing deadwood, because migratory birds need them for nesting. Spoiler Alert: Birds do not nest in dead trees.

2.) You may not remove beetle-kill or beetle-infested trees, because we must let the forest biome take care of it naturally. Spoiler alert: the beetles are an invasive species from China, and the forests of the US never had them before the late '60s.

536 What I realized a few years ago, is that you never have large forest fires on the East coast... they are always Denver West. Why? They all burn State and Fed owned Land... because if it was privately owned land, like on the East Coast, the owners would take care of it to make sure it would not burn down.
Posted by: Romeo13

It's because it's dry. Most of the big western forests rely on snow melt for the moisture to keep them alive and healthy. When snow fall is off, the forests dry out faster by the end of summer, and more fires.
Plenty of deadfall on the ground, because nobody wants to do preventive burns.
The forests in the East are full of deadfall, but it rains here during the summer, so the forests don't dry out and become tinder boxes.

Then your starter home got passed on to somebody else needing a starter home. There are a shit ton of starter homes out there, whole developments of them that were built decades ago. People just aren't getting out of them for one reason or another. I stayed way too long in the house I just sold. Cities and counties don't really care about the lower priced housing stock because it doesn't add much to the government's tax base. A basic duplex on Elm St isn't going to bring in the same tax dollars as a 4000 sq/ft McMansion in the new Rolling Meadows subdivision.

This is the real supply chain/employment effect. Fewer workers showing up leads to less of things, so businesses are concentrating on their simplest products with the biggest markups, and that they can sell in volume. If people buy a lot of tomato soup, and considerably less chunky chicken with stars, and you have a limited number of cans, labels, and workers, you churn out all the tomato you can.

568 What I find somewhat strange about a lot of the shortages is the fact that it's hard to find large sizes of things.

I live out in the boonies so we tend to buy large sizes of stuff to cut back on trips into town. For every large bag of Splenda you can find there's about 400 small ones. They used to be fairly equal in number on the shelves.

Is your house hugely expensive, or your area highly volatile in some way? My homeowner's last year was $800. For the year.

Substitution effect along with predictive store ordering. Stores anticipate demand to be more or less the same for products such as minestrone soup with perhaps no more than seasonal variations. But, combined with supply shortages, since vegetable soup is taking on higher demand (inflation, storage, etc.), when it is out, people substitute close substitutes like minestrone. Now the regular minestrone soup buyers have to go without or substitute some other product. Predictive ordering makes the issue worse as stores are uncertain whether the demand for a specialty soup has gone up or whether the real demand is for vegetable soup.

Saw this in ammo shortages--the most popular cartridges disappear first and then the specialty cartridges. The popular cartridges bounce back into supply sooner with others lagging.

571 Is Brandon going to put up another chart for inflation like he did last week comparing himself to other Presidents on job growth? Can't wait to see it. Also, I don't remember Brandon EVER talking about his BuildBackBetter plan when he was campaigning. When did he ever mention spending $5 billion dollars? Or the details? Did I just miss it? It was just a slogan from the basement dweller, no one knew what it meant.

572 Just returned from the store. Plenty of everything in stock. Some prices have increased and have added about $30 a week to my overall bill.

Not really, the general public is being educated daily as to the rotten nature of our elites and the rot in our political system. What they are going to do about it remains to be seen.

See above, the markup on small quantity items is generally bigger than large quantity packaging. So, during shortage times, they produce the small quantity packaging as that can be sold more profitably.

576 Aren't all the margins in selling those upgrades?
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at January 12, 2022 01:33 PM (z5Vrg)

The margins are buying the appliances in bulk direct and selling the new houses as fast as possible. The starter homes are pretty much spec, but if a home buyer gets in before the building phase, then the contractor can substitute some higher end appliances as part of his bulk purchase.

It's the 2nd homeowner of that house that wants the big upgrades because they are moving out of their parents' house, and that's what their parents have.
