The furious emperor condemned Catherine to death on a spiked breaking wheel, but, at her touch, it shattered. Maxentius ordered her to be beheaded. Catherine herself ordered the execution to commence. A milk-like substance rather than blood flowed from her neck.

I mean that horse to her left and behind seems to be quite shocked about what's about to happen. Like maybe it's got a REASON be be upset?

73 According to Wiki-fu, this is St. Catherine of Alexandria. She was martyred at age 18 because she kept winning debates against scholars who wanted to disprove Christianity. Maxentius had her tortured on a stretching wheel, which became her main attribute (see Michelangelo's "Last Judgement"), but it broke, so she was beheaded instead. This is the St. Catherine that supposedly appeared to Joan of Arc.

Posted by: Kris at January 13, 2022 09:43 AM (OyyDO)

74 A number of teh early female martyrs were killed because they refused to marry pagans, declaring themselves to be wed to Jesus Christ. Infuriated the hell out of the Establishment.

We use to go out on the weekends and we'd drink 'til we drowned
But now she's acting funny and I don't understand
I think that she's found her some other man

She left me for Jesus and that just ain't fair
She says that He's perfect, how could I compare?
She says I should find Him and I'll know peace at last
If I ever find Jesus, I'm kicking His ass

86 This is a powerful painting and I didn't know the story of St. Catherine. The contrast between the executioner with his dynamic pose and Catherine's calm, prayerful acceptance is amazing. The details in the various figures, especially their faces, reminds me of Rembrandt. (That's a good thing.) I'm sure there are a lot of things going on that escape me, such as the buildings in the background, but learning about them is part of the fun and appreciation of art. The use of muted colors and their distribution throughout the work adds to the atmosphere.

Interesting painting. Thanks, CBD.

90 And are those original crocs on his feet? Don't look like they'd give anyone good traction. Especially with its just warming up and the snow is melting.

Why to painters always miss the details of life? Every see a painting with a horse in it and no horse shit to be seen anywhere?

I mean one of the major reasons we switched from horses to engines so quickly was the damn horse shit. Except for farmers. They liked horse shit so it didn't matter to them but even so it's a pain to deal with. And don't forget the pissing too. Makes a nice slippery muck on top of roads that are mud in the first place.

Just like they don't paint people shitting or pissing. What's with the utopian view of painters? Get some realism in there.

Northern Renaissance artists really like to show off their skill and imagination. While the main scene is large, front and center, the background has stuff going on too. And many times they're never related to the main theme. They're just people doing things while chaos is erupting in the foreground. The details in the landscapes and cityscapes are superb too.

And then oil painting was developed...

But for political gain, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is trying to blame grocery stores for high prices. On January 7, Warren tweeted a video clip from her appearance on MSNBC last week.

"What happens," she asked, when "grocery store chains like Kroger dominate an industry? They can force high food prices onto Americans while raking in record profits." She called for the use of the government's antitrust power to "break up" grocery chains like Kroger.||

There's an in-joke about it in Bride of Frankenstein. Pretorius the creepy guy has created mini-life, little simulacra of humans in tall cylinders. One of them is dressed and looks much like Laughton as Henry, and in fact the mini-king tries to get out and climb into the cylinder holding a pretty princess.

The gag? Laughton was then married to Elsa Lanchester, who plays Mary Shelley and the Bride creature in the film.

Never take counsel of your fears. Have patience and wait for them to show up in their own time and place.

You'll be surprised how often stuff doesn't happen or happen differently than you expected or that your decision is different due to circumstances NOW than from earlier.

Patience is one of the most difficult trait to learn but it pays off every day. It makes one more calm and allows one the time to really think about things. And like I said; lots of surprises.

320 Grocery stores aren't the most lucrative industry. They have a profit margin of only one percent. So when they get charged higher prices by suppliers, they have no choice but to pass those costs on to consumers.

Posted by: andycanuck (UHVv4) at January 13, 2022 10:16 AM

I read an article some years back on the profit margin for grocery stores and the author said if a shopper dropped a bottle of ketchup on the floor and it broke, they lost money on that customer and the next customer, it's literally that tight and they only thing that makes it work is extremely high volume.

Added a bit of emphasis to that.

Agree? Based on what? By what standard? Agreement is a consensual act. I cannot "agree" with you at the point of a gun of the penalty to disagreement is that my freedom or life are destroyed. That isn't agreement, that's coercion.

Agreement requires, well, agreement. So convince me to agree with you. State your case. Show your evidence. Define your standards. Do it, Kamala. Yes, you're correct. I was referring to the stretch of time we spend here on Earth. We're born and we live and then we die but we do not usually know the time or means of our death. My point was as in a undefined journey when it is over one can feel relief that that time/event is now over and other events can begin. Plus as I said life is not really much fun. And since I'm assured of a more pleasant time afterward I'll be quite happy that it's over. A melancholic happy but still a relief. Imagine how a prisoner feels that has done their time and they're walking out the front gate.

They Gross a lot of $$ because we buy a lot of *stuff* not because they charge an inordinate amount.
They're all going to go bankrupt and be forced to close and then you'll really hear wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Libs and Pols in Sacramento.

519 Like many people, I want to see the GOP extinguished once and for all - but by its own supporters, not proscription. If its proscribed, so would any movement that replaces it.

However, there is no danger of the GOP being banned, anymore than the Globetrotters would shut down the Generals. There is no point to the Great American Shell Game without them around.

527 Not unwise to prepare for disappointment. This is afterall, an op. Thus, it will not be decided based upon the law, reason, practicalities. Its part of the "reset".

My hope is that the faction in the Biden junta that wants to declare victory over COVID and "move on" has the pictures of John Roberts on Epstein Island.

If so we might even get a 6-3 decision against the mandates.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at January 13, 2022 10:51 AM (2JVJo)

That Red Wave may not take place. Ten months is still an exceptionally long time in politics, and if Moronic makes C-19 officially endemic, a lot can change. In the meantime, the Republicans are playing prevent offense. They hope that the Dems will still mismanage inflation and the supply-chain (Narrator: they will), but that might not be enough. Especially if folks like Cruz continue to make bonehead moves that depress the base.

535 The SCOTUS decisions will be lengthy, I think that's why they're taking so long. They might also have fractured sub-parts, with some narrow concurrence tying together a majority.

Roberts will try to bend over backwards to achieve some kind of consensus or buy-in from the liberal bench.

Best possible outcome is that Kavanaugh (and likley a 5-person majority) use the case to hammer against administrative agency overreach. Not just granting the injunction against the OSHA rule, but using it to curb agency power.

We'll see.

540 469- Grocery stores have already closed in CA. Stores that weren't really making any money starting getting robbed because there's no penalty for theft in CA, so the chains shut down those stores. Bonus, the stores that were closed tended to be in lower income areas.

It will be a non-decision. Kagan, Sotomayor and Breyer will let the government shoot the non-vaxxed. Thomas and Alito will be solid for overturning, maybe Gorsuch as well. Roberts, Kavanaugh and Barrett will go "blblblbl" with their finger on their lips.

Lots of paintings that were commissioned to hang high on walls look bizarre in museums where they are hung at eye-level. A famous one is "Equestrian Portrait of Prince Balthasar Charles" by Diego Valazquez, which has a barrel-shaped horse that looks perfectly fine when viewed from below.

Grocery stores have very fast investment payout time. They cycle inventory about once a week.

Or - updated to modern times - they run out of products on which to make 1% in just a couple of days.
