Colonialism for me, but not for thee [Joe Mannix]

"Colonialism" is yet another example of the Left's assault on language. You see this word all over the place in the writings of the woke, but it is never defined. This is because the definition is insane. In modern Left-speak, "colonialism" translates approximately to "white European influence." It applies specifically to anything American, though the British get a free ride as a result. Like the rest of the stuff that traces back to Postmodernism, colonialism is also, of course, a function of power. If you're powerful, your influence is colonial. If you're not powerful, your influence is non-colonial or even anti-colonial - unless an American does it, in which case it's "cultural appropriation." Nice trap.

So what is it, then? It's a pretty broad definition and is of course meaningless. But for some examples, the fact that English is the international language of business is "colonialism." American cultural exports (TV shows, movies, music, etc.) are "colonialism." Western standards for anything are "colonial" if those standards are extended to, say, a non-Western business partner. This is, of course, absurd.

But what isn't "colonialism?" Unsurprisingly, actual colonialism isn't colonialism. The best example of this is the 20-year experiment in Afghanistan. After conquering the country, the US government and countless NGOs flooded the country with all sorts of progressive propaganda and agencies. Western standard were imposed on the conquered. Giant signs and limitless quantities of materials on any given progressive concept - from women's rights to gay and transgender equality to medical care to everything else - were produced and distributed in Afghanistan. It was top-down imposition of alien cultural values on the vanquished population, and much of it was nice and Leftist - and unrelenting.

The destruction of these artifacts happened with astonishing rapidity as the Taliban retook control of the country during and after our disastrous and grossly mismanaged withdrawal. The fall of the progressive propaganda complex and various Western good deeds like girls schools in Afghanistan were much bemoaned by the Left. So much progress lost, and the country was returning to oppressive antiquated tyranny. They also didn't get why the Taliban was so enabled to sweep through the country without even token resistance. The two cannot possibly be related in any way whatsoever.

The contradiction in this is apparent. Any Western or - heaven forbid - American cultural influence is awful and oppressive and "colonial." Unless, of course, it is the work of the State/NGO complex that is working in accordance with their progressive goals. In that case, it isn't "colonialism" at all, it is just work to further the cause of various hyphenated forms of so-called "justice." It wasn't colonialism machinating in Afghanistan, it was merely justice being spread.

Your influence and ideas, whatever they are, are dangerous and oppressive colonialism. Their influence and ideas, even when financed by state actors and backed up with military might projected from the other side of the world, is just progress. Their literal, military-backed, state-sponsored imperial experiments are, somehow, not colonialism. Your insistence that all employees show up on time for meetings, however, is colonialism.

Doublespeak. It's what's for breakfast. And lunch. And dinner. Unless your culture doesn't value three meals a day, of course. We wouldn't want to be colonial about it.

14 It would be nice to have a write up tying all of the events leading up to the "domestic terrorist" proclamation (and banning Trump and other people from running for office) to make it easier to look at.

I can see it because I've been following it the entire time, but it's incredibly complicated and would be absurd sounding to anyone who hasn't.

Until it's over and we're in the camps, of course.

Because of that dodge in all of Postmodern philosophy: power. It's the European systems - and the American and to a lesser degree Anglo manifestations in particular - that succeeded and are powerful. Thus, they are oppressive and achieved it illegitimately. Any continuation of their influence is colonial oppression, systemic racism and all the rest. The non-powerful are non-oppressive, by Postmodern definition. Therefore, a lack of "diversity" is not a problem. If anything, imposing diversity on them would colonial.

By constantly changing the rules and the language, they stay ahead and rationalize why they should be in charge. Eventually, they used this to capture academia and the deep state, but now they have no one to blame for their abject failures. So everything is racist, with colonialism as the new trope.

You can nation-build if you want to, and you will likely even be successful (see Japan and West Germany after the War), but there's a prerequisite that is almost never met. You must win, unconditionally and without question or opposition. You must break the will of the vanquished. Everyone must acknowledge the utter victory of one side and the utter, irreversible, total and complete destructive defeat of the other.

Nation building absent that level of total victory is a fool's errand.

93 good essay Joe, and (indeed) we loaded up Afghanistan with wokist propaganda. I'm sure some people took to it all, but now the Taliban is ripping those influences out root and branch, which usually means people get killed. I saw the Taliban was hinting members of a girls volleyball team and beheading them in a public square, as a warning to all future volleyball players. So much for American 'colonialist' norms.

94 Everything the Left throws up as an argument against this or that should be understood as saying, "I want to be in charge of this or that."

When the colonizing is controlled by non-Lefties, it has to be bad, by definition, since the Lefties aren't in control. If controlled by the Lefties, it's great and "progress." Best recent example is the heel turn of the ACLU. "Speech restrictions imposed by tradition and/or conservative societal norms ARE absolutely the worst thing ever. BUT speech restrictions imposed by Lefty college campuses and/or Lefty-controlled government agencies are actually pretty cool."

Right. But those kinds of nuances have no place in the leftist tropes. They mean effective colonialism (as in, the imposition of your ways on others) but the means is always imperialism rather than direct colonization.

As always, they use imprecise language. Afghanistan was an imperial experiment, not a colonial one - but it engaged in every single thing the Left talks about when it talks about "colonialism." They have never been known for word choice.

236 No shit. It's why I've never bought one. Or a boat.

Neighbor once had a travel trailer. He was always fixing something on it. Always. Then he got an RV bus thing. It stranded them at least 3 times in 2 years. And was in the shop every month for something broken.

Eh. I have a boat and an RV. Yeah things break. And you fix them. It's really no big deal. For my RV, I pay about $500ish a year on maintenance, which includes winterizing and summerizing. With the boat, about $1000-1500 a year.

But the way people mythologize this stuff it's as if you're spending $100K a year or something.

Same with a pool. I've lived in a house with a pool about 1/2 my life. I love it. But then I always read about how pools are such a HUUUUUUUUGE pain in the ass. And I'm like, how? who? what? huh? I spend 20 minutes a week fucking around with the ph balance and cleaning the filters. And that's about the extent of my effort.

Years ago we went to a small town bar in Canada for standup night. The first up was a typical standup, not great but good. The second was a ventriloquist with a foul mouthed dummy. The actual ventriloquist said about 4 words mostly trying to stop the flood of insults from the dummy who did all the talking. It was like something from the Twilight Zone. Exactly. As I say about the notion of wearing the muzzle to your restaurant table but not while you're seated, the virus is very polite. It hovers in the background while you eat your scallopini, but surges to the attack when you get up to go to the bathroom.

On the other hand, I will say when I think of McMansion, a particular 'style' of house is pictured. A compact and dense (even if large) multistory house that has a tendency to look exactly like the one next to it. I have never liked this style.

Two (or more) story monstrosities topped by roofs with multiple dormer windows and more gables and valleys than you can shake a stick at.

339 Colonialism or Imperialism ... more like taking control of another country. "Nation Building" (or a version of the Bush Doctrine?) can be problematic. But surrendering to China was a terrible alternative ... or was it just a total sellout by corruptocrats, while DeepState and globalists made NWO/BBB plans?

We do need a coalition of countries that are at least more like us, and that stand for Liberty. The Western allies have been selling out to the globalists, paradise lost. But we also need alliances with less Western places ... India, maybe Vietnam ... Saudi Arabia for example.

Coalition Building ... with rules (no slavery, no genocide, some kind of military commitment stronger than the NATO failures?)

I bought a car 2 summers ago, which I found on Craigslist. I looked at the pics and he had 2 sports cars in the garage next to this car. You could eat off the floor of that garage. Looking at those pics, was enough to tell me this dude was meticulous. And sure enough he had a book of maintenance records, including car wash receipts showing full details every 6 months. All for a car with only 55K miles. He was doing shit every 10K miles that only is needed every 20 or 30.

We were about 400 miles away from each other and met 1/2 way to do the deal. The dude damn near cried when he gave me the title. But he said he had to start selling off some things to fund his business which was growing like crazy, but he didn't want to go into debt.

Ah, even the Buick luxo-sedans have been infected with the notion that everything in the suspension and tires has to be stiff, for "handling." 446 I keep a very close eye on the basics. Brakes, tires, battery, tune-ups. I found a European car shoppe that is about 40% cheaper than the BMW dealer and they do great work. every time I take it in, they make me an offer for it. I pay particular attention to the canvas. I know that once that goes, replacing it will be $$$.

Yeah absolutely never step foot inside a BMW dealership (or any dealer really) once it's out of warranty. Especially on older models. The guy who's been working on BMWs for 30 years at the Indy shop knows exponentially more about a 2002 model better than the techs at the dealer who graduated from a 6 months course 2 years ago.

A lot of places here that sell that kind of thing also double as "adult novelty" stores. There's a shop back home called Pokey's Planet. Someone built a church next door. Was a really swell thing for them to build that church cuz the building obscures the parking lot.

452 Honest question: why would you buy a Buick, or any GM product when there are 100 other better options out there? ..

Easy answer?

It's hard to buy a bad car these days, and you can get a good product that can be worked on at any shop in any town anywhere. I love my weird cars and my euro stuff, but maintenance and upkeep is a concern. Heck, it was mentioned in this very thread.

And I would absolutely recommend someone buy a$4000 100K Buick over a 100K BMW.

True, I did have to buy a battery in August of 2020 for the Buick. It was the original, and annoyingly gave no warning that it was weakening. Fortunately I was at home. AAA came out, installed the new one, made sure everything worked, charged my credit card, done. About $150 all told, I guess.

A battery is a consumable item, so that's not a failure of the car. Before 48 months is up, if it's low enough on charge, AAA will replace it for free.

And shit like sanctions won't do anything since Putin gives no fucks about it. The west needs his natgas, so they won't say boo.

517 Fun fact: BMW maintains a full catalog of all the parts for that car. You could, if you wanted to, build one from scratch from OEM parts. It would cost $300K+, but you could.

519 Yeah absolutely never step foot inside a BMW dealership (or any dealer really) once it's out of warranty. Especially on older models. The guy who's been working on BMWs for 30 years at the Indy shop knows exponentially more about a 2002 model better than the techs at the dealer who graduated from a 6 months course 2 years ago.

Same with harleys. I'm tooled up to work on everything back to the 1930's. The techs in the harley dealers wouldn't even recognize the tools.

521 "That used to be the case for Volvos"

Volvo, P-2 chassis based is the way to go.

Reliable, and easy to fix.

522 I see a BMW 2002 parked, and sometimes being driven, on my way home every day. Looks almost new.

524 196 "Hate to break it to you, but it is impossible to become a Christian by coercion."

At one time, being Christian was defined as 'getting baptized' so while you're technically right, not historically unknown to force people to become Christian.

Is anyone here remembering the history of the Inquisition? That was basically forced Christianity l.

525 Former BMW owner, yeah, but no. That said, they have certain things perfectly down, like the ride. But everything costs alot to fix and some things need specifically made BMW tools. But I was warned and didn't listen because wife wanted it... so who am I to talk. You'll look good in it while it runs though.
