Happy 2022! Was there anything you appreciated during 2020 or 2021?

2022 flatten.png

I agree with Dr_No that we shouldn't do this again.

Daniel Greenfield: COVID Deaths Fall as Omicron Wave Fails to Deliver

The US is seeing fewer COVID-19 hospitalizations per case than in previous waves, suggesting Omicron is causing "milder disease" than previous variants, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

Teachers' unions are trying to figure out how to spin this to justify closing schools anyway.

A friend has thrown up his hands at all of this:

Was really hoping for more sanity in 2021. Lol. Going into 2022, I have no expectations but to enjoy it. Every day is a blessing. Happy new year y'all.

Are you with him, or are you in battle mode?

I'm kind of in a "stay informed" and "pick your battles" frame of mind.
And yes, every day is a blessing.

Is education your battle?

On the mention of teachers above, one of the few advantages of forcing all kids into remote schooling has been that parents got a good look at what their children are being taught. Here's a glimpse at the equity resources from one school district including The 1619 Project. (Requires NYT subscription, apparently.) Did most parents know about this kind of indoctrination before enforced remote learning?

Parents have been fighting back. And Ron DeSantis has another plan, too.

Have you seen any headway in cultural battles?

Do you have a hero from the pandemic?

One of mine is Grace Daniel, who wrote about six months ago about how My Woke Employees Tried to Cancel Me. Here's How I Fought Back and Saved My Nonprofit.

To protect yourself and your organization from becoming subverted by critical social justice ideology and subsequently cancelled, you must understand how the battle is fought.

First, critical social justice is an anti-objectivity ideology: One of its fundamental assertions is that there are no objective truths, only "positional" truths.

She insisted on definitions of terms, such as "evidence-based". She also insisted that complaints by staff be "evidence-based". Even though she is a woman of faith. Since those complaining could not make "evidence-based" complaints, they left.

I think the process she went through to counter the attack on herself, her husband and her organization was remarkable.

A few months ago, Illiniwek made a comment here about "reason", which could be considered to go along with "objectivity". It reminds us that the French Revolution may have suffered from too much "objectivity". And "positional objectivity" is still possible among leftists:

idk the Deep Philosophy needed to argue "Reason" as it applies in various thangs . . . I vaguely recall hearing the French Revolution murdered good people, partly because it was reasonable to conclude removing the (perceived) evil ones was necessary to attain ? Enlightened Culture?

Our Founders established God given rights, protected FROM government. It always comes down to reasonable men, deciding when to kill off their unreasonable oppressors.

There is still real science, but the evil ones like Fauci are useful political tools, willing to murder by restricting doctors with useful treatments. Their chant is "Trust the Science", but real scientists know they are lying. It is a vicious coup, their fake science is just Orwellian 2+2=5, submit or be punished.

Reason, faith, values, truth. Big topics. We certainly get a lot of garbled messages.

And we have been forcefully reminded - even more than usual - during these two years that suppressing information is a bad thing.

New Publications

Bari Weiss has published a description of Our Favorite Essays of 2021
Many of which were published by outlets that didn't exist a year ago.

I have to wonder if some of the old leftist publications and media outlets are sorry that they pushed some of their talent out.

We have featured some of the essays that made Bari's list and one that didn't, this long piece on vaccines from Tablet, which picked apart the changing narratives on the vaccines and COVID. Even an honest liberal with deep anger at the "unvaccinated" found it "deeply disquieting".

The old joke about The New Republic was that it was a Jewish magazine pretending to be a magazine about national affairs. Tablet is a magazine that covers the nation while pretending to be Jewish. It's also one of the best damn publications in America right now. Editor in chief Alana Newhouse's powerful and provocative essay, "Everything Is Broken," is Exhibit A:

Everything Is Broken

We've seen that one before here at AoSHQ, too. A lot of these pieces are not written by conservatives, but they challenge the leftist narrative.

Media comedy:

Readers of the British newspaper, The Guardian, are accusing the outlet of deactivating an online poll that asked readers to vote on "Person of the Year" after it became apparent that J.K. Rowling would handily win.

"Tell us: who is your 2021 person of the year?" ran the headline, posted on Dec. 15, with the subtitle, "Time Magazine chose billionaire Tesla boss Elon Musk - but who would be your choice?" A short time later, when Rowling was far and away in the lead, the voting form disappeared, as did the results. A message in small print stated, "This form has been deactivated and is closed to any further submissions."

Rowling has been at the center of numerous cancel culture storms this year for her refusal to deny the reality of biological sex. Earlier this month she stirred up controversy by mocking Scotland's law enforcement policy that allows accused rapists to self-identify as female. "War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. The Penised Individual Who Raped You Is a Woman," she tweeted in reference to an article titled, "Absurdity' of police logging rapists as women."

Who is your Person of the Year?

Music and Dance

Swing seems to be diverging from its roots a little in the competitive arena:

What competitors do to unwind. Who did the Macarena best: these randomly chosen partners

Or the DNC?

Have a hangover? Fifth o' whiskey and a case of the blues.

Hope you have something nice planned for the weekend and the New Year.

This is the Thread before the Gardening Thread.

9 It reminds us that the French Revolution may have suffered from too much "objectivity".

No, that wasn't objectivity. It was enlightenment philosophy being twisted by the usual subjects. Like every left wing ideology, it rejected rights, liberty, and individual for the collective and began making decisions based on what they deemed (subjectively) to be best for the collective, at the cost of the individuals.

Objectivity views things dispassionately and reasonably based on external, absolute standards. Right and wrong, truth and lies, beauty and corruption. If you reject personal rights, you've violated objective ethics. If you reject individual meaning you've violated objective truth. And that leads only to ugliness, lies, and evil.

26 Just like El Rushbo said that he "simply didn't participate in recessions" I tried desperately to not participate in the pandemic of hysteria. I did what I felt was best for myself and tried to not let the irrational behavior of those around me in deep, deep azure blue southern Maine to affect how I felt.

The mask mandate in the state dropped around May. I wanted to burn mine but my mother in law gave it to me and my wife was irate that I would consider such a thing. To this day I'll be the only one in my local sandwich shop that isn't wearing a mask - even though there's no unconstitutional order tell us that we have to.

So while I'm refusing, as much as I can, to participate in this nonsense, it's definitely led to a feeling of self-ostracization among my community.

Right, and that's based on again, the collective vs the individual. Its better that these individuals die so that the collective is safe from the sniffles. It betrays two lies in their minds: that the individual is expendable for the collective, and that the Wuhan Flu is a death sentence.

76 Back in the '90s when same sex marriage activists were hitting their stride, there was a universal understanding that gender and (biological) sex were two different concepts, and quite different from one another.

It's only in the last few years that more radical intersectional activists have made "progress" in blurring the lines between the two, by deliberately using terms like "male" and "man" interchangeably, and muddying the waters for boring, normal, common folks who don't wanna argue over specific words for fear of being cast out as -phobes.

77 yep, but what did he know about the place?

That's the key here. Even assuming he was genuinly not involved with the underage prostitution, that doesn't mean he's somehow blameless or saintly here. Why was he there to begin with? How could he possibly not know what was going on? Why even hang with this dirtbag?

As soon as Trump caught on to what Epstein was about, he banned the man from his properties and stopped borrowing his jet.

For the others, it's war but my main line of attack will to be happy.

2021 was a banner year for us as we were manifestly blessed to care for a baby daily. Through our love and care for him a previously black spot in my heart has begun to be healed and the baby's mother has begun to question her deep blue thinking and has started to ask thoughtful, intelligent questions of all things and authority.
Beginning in February, we will start caring for a second little baby boy - different family.

On a more positive note, I have kicked into gear the process by which I switch from hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis. PD is easier on the body, you do it at home while you're asleep, and the life expectancy is longer. I have also tentatively scheduled cataract surgery. Sometime before I die, I would like to see again. I have lost not just my long distance, but my midrange vision, and I don't dare drive at night. Sadly, it was the standard SJW position ten or twenty years ago, and today, would probably poll with significant majority support.

There are also who firmly believe that it's ok to engage in child sex in places where it is "not illegal". But they also hate it when DeSantis is actively governing or speaking.

I submit that the Left's reason for existence is to hate and destroy. The dehumanization of kids is huge here. Never lose sight of that.

Yes, if they would leave me alone, that would be fine. But they really want to kill us, not let us die.

They want to isolate us from "their" society, cut us off from medical treatment -- for the many treatable conditions that are now actually killing people. (like when the closed hospitals for anything but covid).

But they even cut off early treatment of Covid, which now appears to have killed a half milllion, who could have survived if given early proper treatment ... and that denial of service process is ongoing.

I saw this in the Bee mitzvah announcement, when the director of religious education said that the community must "learn from the students" when it comes to gender, without any questioning of from whom they got the wrong and destructive ideas. Kids didn't wake up one day and decide that they could change sex, the idea was planted and nurtured. The religious educators are renouncing their responsibility to teach.

I agree, I think she's trying to or has cut a deal to protect her from her actions. Children who are abused often end up abusers themselves. I knew a girl who was terribly abused by her father and was fixated on being that little girl with daddy with every man she met, to the point of dressing like a little girl at times.

The idea that she was molested, raped, and abused to the point she came to understand that as normal and even desirable, so she did it to others is hardly inconceivable.

To access the comments on an old thread, you have to fiddle around with the URL. So for example, MisHum's last pet thread, if you look in the archives, has this URL:

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/397060.php#397060

If you want to see the comments, you have to make it look like this:

I figured this out a while back by looking at a current thread (such as the one we are on) and seeing how the URL was different from an archived thread, then changing it manually to make it match everything except the actual post number.

The big flaw with the "let the unvaxed die" crowd is that they don't mean "ignore them and hope the Wuhan Flu gets them." They mean "make them die by denying basic human care and decency." As in "no treatment for cancer unless you get the shot" and "no welfare or shelter unless you get the shot."

And Dr. Malone in the next Rogan interview said he himself had had COVID twice. Sorry, but people need to be careful with absolute statements about stuff like this.

Asympotmatic spread is definitely a thing, and there's a fucking huge gray area between completely asymptomatic and dying in the ICU. Plenty of people are "slightly and unnoticeably symptomatic" and then spread the disease.

And catching COVID twice or more is definitely possible regardless of variant. Secondary infections are much more mild, but they do happen. It's not like your immune system suddenly erects magical walls that nuke COVID viruses before they enter your body. Sometimes, it takes a day or two for your body to full respond, and during that interval, you are, in fact, infected, and would likely test positive.4

219 Hate to throw a damper on things, but in the beginning, most of the girls went willingly, knowing full well that they'd be expected to engage in hanky panky at some level.

And they weren't from low income homes.

A family member of mine was approached early on, in the 90s ( late 80s?) and told she could party 24/7, and would meet rich and famous men, and there was no doubt that a certain amount of sexual behaviour was expected, mainly happy endings and the occasional blow job. She laughed it off.

As time went by they may have started taking advantage of low income girls and lying about what would happen, I have no idea.

I hope everyone involved gets the maximum punishment, just saying that some of these girls have reinvented themselves into completely innocent victims, and that just ain't the way it went down, at least not at first.

Some girls, and boys for that matter, have had minimal support or ethics education. They do know they have limited resources and few choices in their current state. Guiffre was abused at age 6 or seven and lived on the streets at age 13. Hard for me to call her slutty and fame seeking.

A few years back there was a country song about a girl named "Fancy", whose mom led her to a life of prostitution as her "only choice". Guiffre was let down and abused by nearly every adult she encountered.

You can get COVID a second time, and it can duplicate enough that you feel your body responding, meaning headaches, swollen lymphs, aches, etc. I think it's easier to admit and accept that if you believe COVID isn't a panic worthy immediate death sentence.

Okay, so I went and looked in my giant Webster's International Dictionary from the 1950s.
And indeed, one of the definitions for gender is listed as "Sex, male or female. now colloquial"

Then there is a lo-o-ong definition regarding gender regarding to grammar. It's limitations and specifications.

There is also another definition from Shakespearean times listing gender as another way to say "kind" as in 'kind of flower' or some such thing.

So, I was wrongish about this. Gender was used to mean sex in some places in the before time but not generally, merely colloquially.

There you go. Meaning restored.

I went to my 1944 Webster's.

Gender is there.

There is a long history for the word.

Getting to 25 years old having been married for 10 years is not the same as getting to 25 and finding yourself sterile from STDs and used up like an old sock.

299 @261 People here in the north Sacramento valley are openly defying governor lard-hair's latest mask mandate. Maybe 15% are wearing masks in grocery stores just to get along. They simply conform to be conformist. I don't hate them for that.

----

Sadly, that's not the case in my part of LA County. Nearly everyone wears masks even in the parking lot.

I was leaving a store the other day. The exit is a bit odd, with a path that goes back past the entrance, and then turns the other way to form a switchback. By coincidence, there were quite a few people leaving the store at that time, and they were all moving along this switchback-style path. When I left the store, I immediately took off my mask. One gentleman who appeared to be in his late 60s or so, noticed me doing so and immediately took his off, as well. Everyone else present had their masks on.

319 The problem with the English Language is that there's not ever just one definition of a word. Not just recent retconning or redefinition, but way back years ago.

321 @287: "So, I was wrongish about this. Gender was used to mean sex in some places in the before time but not generally, merely colloquially."

I could be wrong, but it seems like gender terms were generally used as adjectives, and sometimes used in place of sex nouns. However, people didn't go the other way around, and use sex nouns when gender terms were more appropriate.

And that's what's being deliberately changed nowadays.

Exactly. The grandparents in this case married young and worked together on a life and family. They were probably raised with a philosophy of commitment and a worth ethic. Nobody took the time to raise and protect Guiffre and kids like her. Its not just about knowing right from wrong (even a 3 year old can do that and is often better at it than adults). Its about knowing consequences, meaning, and significance, having the wisdom to properly deal with something powerful and important.

Few if any 16 year olds are really ready for that, these days particularly.

Hi bluebell, and Happy New Year! There have also been a few people here at the HQ who have reported family members with a double bout.

I was very happy to hear McCullough explain how to rid your nose and throat of viruses using the povidone iodine (Betadine) solution. It's a great thing to do if you suspect you've been exposed or even if you already have symptoms of any virus, whether COVID or the common cold.

When I was in EMS, we used to swab our nostrils with Betadine during winter cold and flu season. Was never sure how effective it was, but apparently there is something to it. For anyone interested: 1/2 tsp. Betadine to 1-1/2 oz. water for nasal spray. (The little bottles are available on Amazon.) I use distilled water just because.

Very well said. There are a lot of temptations in this world especially with social media. At that age your don't have the benefit of wisdom, and desire obscures your moral judgment. I believe many of us, if we had a second chance at it, would do things differently at that age knowing what we do now. That why parents are important in helping their children see the consequences and ultimately help them make those judgments. BTW, where were their parents as these kids were netting around the world? Weren't they the least bit curious about anything? It doesn't seem that way.

362 The American experiment was built on four vital columns of steel.
They were Faith, Family, Freedom, and the Free-Markets. The American house appears to be crumbling and titling ever so quickly into a disastrous collapse. This is because the four principal pillars are being knocked out from under them. For the constitutional republic to stand, the four basic columns must be reinforced under the house. Starting with Faith.
Faith is the cornerstone. For when "Men have forgotten God", the house will undoubtedly crumble.

I believe you're correct. People have odd desires and goals for their children and many are willing to look the other way it out far to much trust in people they shouldn't. There was an incident here years ago where people were letting their children go to a "talent scout" in NYC. "Everyone was doing it" and some kids got spots on programs and commercials. But then it was uncovered there was a lot of abuse going on. Then people were shocked when they really shouldn't have been. Their personal desires overwhelmed their common sense and judgment.

And in the absence of a good parent, a good role model. One of my friends had very lousy parents who made one great choice. Lots of complaints about booster side affects, but that seems most common in people who had very mild cases in the past. More serious cases seem to do better with the boosters. Personally, I felt some lymph node stuff, but that's just my immune system ramping up, and not COVID specific.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if the difference between infection taking hold and normal but aggressive immune response. I suspect most people don't stop and think about the difference.

I think the entire category of teenager is part of the problem. We've created this nonsense halfway age where you're still a kid but get benefits of being an adult, so you can peter pan through life into your 20s.

Its been a century or so by now but it used to be you were declared grown up at a certain age (today you are a man/woman), and were expected to act responsibly. Sure you were a trainee so people gave you some benefit of the doubt but there was not this hazy inbetween stage.

Fair point, but self-promotion in science has always been a ticklish subject. The tradition that one's work stands alone, and that its promotion was dependent on its quality and the thoughts of the peers who read it has always been powerful.

I did read a bit on this blog about some idiots in France trying to de-gender their language, but the French do not play that. They're super protective of their language.

439 I appreciate everything about my life, the good and the bad. When you're been in the military, and when you've already had parents who've both been through stage 4s of cancer and died, you can see how bad life can be...so, when the Almighty graces you with something better for now, it's worth appreciating...
Posted by: Nova local at January 01, 2022 12:58 PM (exHjb)

I think it becomes harder and harder, as life goes on, to see the "good" and "bad" as separate. They are merely different sides of the same flow of life.

As an example, if one takes on the responsibility of a pet, you know there's a very good chance the thing is going to die in your lifetime. Do you choose not to take on a pet, for this reason? So be it. Do you choose not to take on a pet for this reason? So be it, but the former is living, the latter is avoiding living.

Yup. There's a Tom Cruise movie where he's a pilot who ends up working for a South American drug cartel bringing drugs into the US -- in Arkansas. Based on a real person. This was during the Clinton years, IIRC.

Yeah shingles isn't the same thing but its a result of having had chicken pox. It can sit in your system and flare up more than once over the years, but its not "catching" anything again and again.

525 I'm with your homeboy, K.T... Can't fix it. It won't get better. "Battle mode" is pointless. The battles are over; we lost. I'm just going to do my work, hang out with my beautiful family, do a lot of pointing and laughing, and enjoy the decline to the greatest extent I can. Just like in 2021.

Once you've accepted that the struggle is over, all of this takes on a lot more comical hue. One of the bright spots for me? In 2021, watching President Brandon Chernenko rapidly degenerate in front of G-d and everyone was gratifying and funny. I think it's going to be even funnier in 2022. We may even get the downright hilarious spectacle of President Cockslot before the year is out.

528 I know Ben Shapiro is an annoying twerp who gets some of the big stuff wrong and has the voice of a cartoon character but sometimes he's good. Recently he posted a bunch of stuff on twitter about the Wuhan Flu:

So once it became clear that covid was not in fact a pagan god visiting vengeance on the unwashed Trump voters alone, the media and Democrats are now willing to admit the following:

1. Cloth masks are ineffective against omicron (Leanna Wen, CNN);
2. The vaccinated can spread and get covid;
3. The death rate is comparable to the flu (Chris Hayes);
4. Many people are entering hospitals with covid, not from covid (Fauci);

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 01, 2022 01:42 PM (KZzsI)

529 Little Ben continued:

5. Natural immunity is a reason omicron hasn't been as virulent (Fauci);
6. We have to take into account societal needs, not just spread prevention (CDC);
7. The asymptomatic should not be tested (NFL);
8. We should focus on hospitalizations and deaths, not case rate (Biden);
9. Children are not at risk and schools should remain open;
10. Covid is predominantly an illness affecting the immunocompromised and elderly and we should not shut down society.

Those of us in reality have been saying all this for months and most of it since May 2020. But your political priors were more important than the data. You had to have your demonization narrative.

Here's the thing: People who were saying these things earlier have been silenced -- they've had their social media accounts suspended, they have had their YT accounts demonetized and/or shutdown completely, may have even lost job or volunteer positions.

So. . . what good is these new admissions now, other than a$$-covering the self-appointed and *protected* "experts" who have had all competing voices mowed down?

An "I told you so" post, or exclaiming "finally, we can agree!" is not brave, and that's not just a knock on Shapiro (who oddly only defends Lefties who are canceled). These people got away with not just lying, but destroying the opposition -- where do the deplatformed, demonetized, and vilified go to get their reputations, platforms and livelihoods back? Why is there no effort to restore them? This is an issue no one seems motivated to address.

Back then, class sizes in elementary were around 30 (OMG, how can such classes be handled or result in learning!! They must be smaller!!!). So in my school (not in PB, but not far), 100 kids in a grade, more/less.

Clearly recall. Two (dos, zwei, dva) "fat" kids, both boys. Two. One kid on some kind of drugs for behavioral stuff (even then, was clear to his peers he needed them).

So there you have it. 3 out of 100 kids either overweight, or needing pharmaceutical help. I don't know the numbers now, don't want to look, but obviously they're multiples of those, high multiples. And no reason whatsoever to thing anything's changed other than behavior, and culture.

555 Even though Trump was overwhelmed by the disastrous incompetence of national institutions (yes there's more to it but trying to stick a different point), one of the several devastating consequences of his removal, one I thought about immediately, was the likelihood there would *never* be any accounting for this massive self-inflicted catastrophe.

If he remained in office, as seemed a foregone conclusion, there was at least potential for a reckoning of some kind. Adding Atlas, though a belated and inadequate step, showed this. And Trump's instincts (to get back to a more normal situation, something he clearly favored very early) probably would have helped tremendously.

Now? One of the ways in which the worst, most failed, most noxious, most repugnant people and institutions in the country won in 2020 was precisely that this outrageous chapter will likely see zero reckoning or correction. And they won because enough of the populace is ignorant, bigoted, and effectively stupid enough to be a hazard to everyone.

592 >>> there is a Christian revival happening right now and it's growing. It's just not happening in the traditional denominations.

The traditional denominations are offering nothing. When they all look like Unitarian-Universalists, why bother?

593 Established churches are, well, established. In an environment where ALL institutions, including them, hate Christians, I'm not sure what the draw is.

During the Soviet period, when church attendance was permitted, it was very low - because the Church was just another evil, G-d accursed Party organ, and everyone knew it. The Christians didn't go to Church, but they didn't go away, either. Thirty short years later, and Russia is noticeably (and statistically) more Christian than the US.

These churches need to wither away. Worship alone or with friends. Forget these stooges. They work for the Party and State, and ultimately for Stan. Your children can rebuild them after the regime collapses.
