Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ace of Spades Pet Thread![]() Happy New Year and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. If you are nursing a self-inflicted case of whatevs, join us celebrating the world of animals. I don't care for politics on The AoS Pet Thread, but this was a nice submission by Roger. He told us, "This is old but might make fodder for the pet thread." Cute or too much time on ones hands? When lockdown boredom hit, painter Eliza Reinhardt got an idea for how to put a smile on the faces of her friends and family – with the help of her dog Finn. Eliza, 26, and Finn, four, have been taking photos reimagining paintings by art icons from Van Gough and Lowry to Frida Kahlo. The duo have so far recreated over 300 paintings – including The Scream, American Gothic, and A Friend In Need – by dressing up and using random items from around the house. Eliza, who’s originally from Iowa and now living in Denton, Texas, USA, says their new hobby has brought out working dog Finn’s natural modelling talent. ![]() Love the pet thread! Here is our first ever foster cat, Christopher Robin. He is such a sweet and affectionate boy who loves snuggling, head rubs and neck scratches. He just got adopted by a lovely young family and we’re very grateful, but of course we miss him a lot! - Scott in CalgaryI bet you do miss him. He's a sleek looking kitteh. I don't think I could ever foster as I would want to keep each and every animal. Thank you for the wonderful story. ![]() Erin the blond Butch The Not Very Ghey Pom Oscar the Weiner Dog My MiL was in the Mall and they were in the same cage so she bought them. She had custom seat made for the back of her Cadillac Allante for them to ride in. - rhennigantxShe got the kid at the mall too? Ya never know what you can get there. Being serious that's a great photo of all 3. Wonderful contribution, thank you. ![]() This is our dearly departed mixed breed rescue Laney, enjoying a reflective moment before Christmas.Yes Don, we like it when the pet's owners are named. Thank you for being a reader. Don't be afraid to comment. Sorry to hear about Laney's passing. She was a looker. ![]() I brought my new puppy Tobie home from a shelter in late May. It's now late December and he has grown quite a lot. I think he's an Anatolian Shepherd mix, not sure mixed with what. He's probably about a year old by now and very much a puppy. He's still in an obnoxious chewing phase, and was caught here trying to Steven Seagal my desk chair cushion. - JoelMy what a big puppeh you have there Joel. Be patient with Tobie, they grow up before you know it. Thanks for submitting his story. ![]() I don't remember whose cat this was, but I love how the look on its face captures the typically feline contempt for humanity. I hope none of the moronimals or their humans mind that I like to borrow photos from the pet thread for my doodles. Thanks as always for doing the thread every Saturday. - SobekGood to hear from you our regular sketch contributor. No one has ever complained about your work which you have submitted. You are truly blessed with great talents. I for one am envious. ![]() Sharp,Sloan,Seamus & Vincent All, of course, Irish Wolfhounds. ![]() Sweetie: 24th Christmas together! - AlanCongrats on your 24th Christmas together. We hope that you have many more. Thanks for your contribution today. ![]() Our beloved "outside cat" Notch, who adopted us very nearly two years ago. He couldn't be an "inside kitty", as he was diagnosed with feline immunity virus, and protecting the two inside cats was the first order of business. But still, he was properly spoiled with endless dry & wet food on demand, copious lap times and walk-by skritches day and night. During the February Freeze, we secured the two inside cats in the master bedroom with box & bowls, and brought Notch in out of the freeze. He, along with several woolen blankets, helped keep me warm till the power was restored. Same with a recent hurricane, which he watched through the living room window. He KNEW he was safe from the storm, and didn't try to go back out. Until the winds abated that is, and then he was a paint-shreddin' meowling monster at the door, rarin' to go! Alas, Notch did not show up for breakfast this Friday, Christmas Eve morning. And I found him only 120 ft. away, horribly and fatally stricken by some car or another. A very sudden and instant end to a very wonderful, loyal, loving and most intelligent cat. Of course, I recovered him, and had have him wait for me, as to I had to go to work, getting home at 1pm. It's now 5 pm, and I've just filled in his grave, which I dug. He's at rest now, wrapped in his favorite blanket, forever. Herself New Dawn is shattered, and I am likewise but barely contained. Other than the Love of Christ in our hearts, this will be a dismal, desolate and despondent Christmas morning, the presents will be of little joy or effect, now. We'll take solace in the warm and fuzzy love from the inside pair of furballs, but it's still awful. Three are now two, and there's no more warmth on the lap on the front porch. You were a wonderful cat, Notch, and a joy to behold. You will be, and are missed, more than words can ever convey. See you o'er the bridge, young man. See you o'er the bridge. Jim & Iris So sorry to hear of your loss. I know you have commented about Notch before in the past. He truly had a good life being your cat. ![]() MisHum, You put up a picture of my Lab, Jill, last April on “The Pet Thread,” taken on the day I picked her out of her litter and before she went into the breeder/trainer’s “Build a Gun Dog” program. She’s finished her training and is now home with me—as you might suspect, socializing a dog who has spent her first ten-and-a-half months in a kennel is an interesting challenge. Here she is now—doing some online training for our Idaho hunting season. Dog-training has certainly advanced since I trained the “First Jill,” more than forty years ago based on the classic, Water Dog. A friend of mine wanted to know if she’s watching the show, critiquing the other dogs, or just reading the captions. Onward, clcYou better keep the darn remote out of her reach or you'll never get your television set back. Great photo and thanks for sharing with us. ![]() Merry Christmas from Maggie, Molly, Candi, PointyHairedBoss & the Missus. And from Moxy, Sally, Caesar & Karma our 4 dog angels that enriched our lives in years past. - PointyHairedBoss A belated Merry Christmas to you and your family. Nice photo. Was that done on a timer or did someone take it for you. Thanks for sharing with us. ![]() Sent by CozMarkFrom a dog guy to a cat guy says something about Woodstock's personality. Both of you enriched each other's lives and that is what pet ownership is all about. So sorry to hear of his passing. Thank you for your story. Quite the nicknames you have there for your new addition. It sounds like the 2 kittehs have to work on their relationship. Thanks for the photo. Quite an interesting lair. After having to say goodbye to Bandit 2 days ago, we may have to help my kitty-cat, Freckles, across soon. She has been with us for over 16 years, so it's been a good run. But she has stopped eating, and is losing weight at an alarming rate.

You are very talented, Sobek. I always enjoy your artwork. However, I don't want to get into the great dog/cat debate, because I've had and loved both, but I don't think Cats have contempt for humanity. They just want to deal with people on their own terms-which makes them like many human beings in that way-and I think that look of the cat may be more sleepiness than anything else.

I have two new kitteh friends at my mon's retirement home. The home has a court yard where they feed about 8 or 9 strays that they have had spayed /neutered indicated by the snipped ear on each. The home skilled care unit feeds them but two kittehs that like to hang in the parking lot have adopted me . Now they recognize my Jeep when I come into the lot and come to meet me for some upgraded dry food that I bring and some nek scritches. One is a gray tabby I named Buddy and the other a black and white with a distinctive stache that I named Dali. I'd bring them home if I didn't already have two best friends there already.

And for anyone who is a "cat person" or someone who became a cat person, I highly recommend this book-The Silent Meow by Paul Gallico. It is a whimsical tale told from the perspective of a cat and is a "guide for strays and homeless cats." I first read it when I was about seven and I no longer can find the copy, but it stuck with me all those years too. It has some amusing photos too if you get a version with pictures. Paul Gallico's wife was a photographer and she took pictures of their cat:

Hello, Folk,
A sad story about Notch the black cat. That's the trouble with cats who insist on being outdoor cats; there's always a chance of something being stronger than they are. Woodstock the Persian reminds me of the late Angelique the Siberian, aka the Furry Blue-eyed Psycho. She too was a beauty and came right up to me in an empty parking lot. I took her to Linda's, and nobody claimed her from the ad we ran or the notices we put up at veterinarians; so Angelique she became. She wasn't Linda's first cat, that was Marie-Antoinette, the smart black cat who converted her from dog to cat person. (She'd always *liked* cats, but had never known any, so she was not anti-cat.) Re the CBD oil, I would worry about problematic additives that a cat or dog might lick off. A product made for humans would probably not have this concern.

I have a doggeh question
I've come to realize that any excitement gives him bad diarrhea. Taking him to his boarding place or any trip, or even having a visitor come to the house and play with him. I have no idea how to prevent it. Been to the vet several times and sometimes he gets antibiotics but he always tests negative for any parasites or bacteria. The old dog didn't get out of the car. She had a seizure in the car on the way home last week and still isn't doing well. I'll have to come up with some fun for the young dog.

Well, we just got home a short time ago. The latest citizen of Chez JTB is snoozing in his kennel. Fluffy (we didn't name him) is a poodle and bichon mix, pure white with black button eyes and nose. He's 11 years old and is a senior rescue. He is deaf but seems very gentle and just fell asleep on the trip home from the rescue group. Our backyard was a big hit with so many new smells to investigate and piddle on.
When our last pup, another senior rescue, passed last February we weren't sure if we would get another dog. We are getting older and I've had three surgeries since then. But my health is good and we just plain needed a sweet pup to care for. No doubt there will be more stories to relate over the next few weeks. Right now all is peaceful. Happy New Year to all of us, including Fluffy. Posted by: JTB at January 01, 2022 04:56 PM (7EjX1) 127

Dogs are funny. They'll gobble up rancid hot dogs off a hot August sidewalk before you can react (don't ask me how I know this) but when you offer them a treat they'll sniff it delicately first as if to say, "Is this edible?"

And I am sad to hear of all that have passed but know they left goodness and pleasure behind them. Praise be to anyone who has had a pet and after they died had the courage to do it again. They live short lives so they usually make it a full one on a daily basis. That they bring us along is a blessing. Posted by: jakee308 at January 01, 2022 06:43 PM (PppPF) 140
