Yesterday I finally got off my ass and tested my new generator setup. I was overdue to run the thing, and (mumble) weeks ago got a "powercleaner" thing that looks like a two-handed power strip.
Got the generator going, hooked up the cords and to test how 'clean" the power was, I ran a radio to see if there was a hit of static coming out of the speaker. Nope. That bodes well for the increasingly sensitive appliances that may have to draw off of it.

LOL, being without power for a week over Christmas 2012 does wonders for preparedness. I personally own The Last Generator in Lansing, because when the stores opened after the ice storm hit, almost all of them were pre-bought (presumably on battery power).
I flung myself on a display model, which uses propane tanks (like for your grill). If you look carefully, you can still see the promotional decals.
Normally, one would have a connection put right into the breaker box, but every electrician was busy and I knew next to nothing about electricity. Happily, my Air National Guard unit had some handy dudes so they walked me through the process of putting in a second set of outlets that ran through the garage so I could have backup power into the kitchen and utility room.
I also hardwired the generator directly into the furnace as a stopgap. I finally got the whole system put together and as I was about to switch the furnace over, the lights came on.

My wife's from the Cumberland Gap area. A couple of years ago we went touring the west side of the state, and she had a bit of a culture shock, having rarely (if at all) been west of Frankfort.

Friend oversaw fail-safe system installations while in the USAF.
When he built his house, he put in two wiring systems one for normal use and one for emergency backup (furnace, stove, refrigerators) with a huge instrumented solar panel array and a backup propane generator. He hasn't had to use anything yet, but the solar array is fully functional and decreasing the electric bill.

Yes, once the weather broke, I built a lean-to next to the garage for the generator and put some pavers down for spare tanks. On the plus side, the noise is away from the living areas of the house, but one still has to brave the elements to pull-start it.
We talk about upgrading it, but other projects have more urgency, like the window replacements I ordered in June that were due in September and still haven't arrived.

No state is Karen-free. I'm in SC and at least in the upstate, masks are rare. Now, I crossed the line into GA for the holidays and it was a much different scene. Masks everywhere in the Atlanta/Marietta area on Christmas Eve. Harbinger of it really turning blue? I sure hope not.

Yes, quite scenic. We don't visit that often, but the view from The Pinnacle is marvelous. The last time we visited was during the fall and we had the Vols game on the radio. We got up to the tunnel and I expected the signal to die but it kept going.
My wife just started laughing. "They wired the tunnel so people would stop breaking at the entrance to hear the plays!"

I've been here over 20 years. I think if you're inland, the chances of anything more than some outer wisps of hurricane bands are not very likely. At least, that's been my experience. I love SC. The only drawback, for my own personal preference, is that it just doesn't get cold enough. I love snow and cold. Here? Not getting much of that.

I live in a liberal college town, and even here things are pretty open. Masking seems to wax and wane. You've got full-on face shields and then people I don't get who have masks on but only for show.
The only places that regularly require them are doctors offices and some government offices (though not the Post Office).
Employees tend to wear them, customers not so much.

It's why I'll never leave NOVA - nothing we get is severe, except cicadas every 17 years...we get hurricanes, no more powerful than a 1, tornados no more powerful than a 1, earthquakes no more powerful than a 4, and occasional "blizzards" that folks would count as a regular snow...
It's perfect for 4 season weather with no severity...so, I told the spouse it would take a heckuva awful life in other places to make me move...

Her Majesty and I have talked ourselves about moving. We have no great affection for the Houston area and now we're both essentially retired there's no reason for us to stay.
We're looking to stay in Texas, just not along the coast; we're both sick of sweating out hurricane season. Somewhere on an arc from about Schulenberg through Bastrop and up toward Navasota is our focus.

You mentioned yesterday something about using baby powder to help remove mats from Dan. I was curious--do you just sprinkle it on the mats and then use the slicker brush?
I also gave everyone my baby powder tip: use it to remove sand from your feet when you're leaving the beach. Works especially well with sticky kids who seem to have sand everywhere.,

There was supposed to ve a big wrap up and commitment ceremony today around noonish. I think the steadily falling rain here may crush their spirits and resolve. Out ...

Inspector's best friend said the problem was that he didn't *entirely* lose taste and smell. That would have been better than everything tasting and smelling like moldy cardboard. He ended up in the hospital not from covid itself but from dehydration, because he lives by himself and had no one to make sure he ate and drank enough.

As long as there's no dairy in the egg prep. My dad used to have steak and eggs all the time, but eggs were cooked in a vegetable oil . I, myself prefer butter and some cheese. Eggs are pareve and considered neither meat nor milk. If you were to ask modern man, instead of bronze age goat herders, they'd probably be meat, but I go with the goat herders.

Yes. Sprinkle it on, rub it in and use a slicker brush. Work from the edge in. Hold the mat by your fingers at the base so you don't pull on it.

Its been a while since we had a GAINZZZZ thread, but after seeing a friend of mine with Type II, I decided that after Thanksgiving I would pursue a lifestyle geared to optimize insulin sensitivity. This was not about establishing any other goal than to singularly achieve an improved insulin response.
So I chose to go with an 18/6 Fast, and to fight off hunger, loaded up on fats/protein which meant reducing carbs to just through vegetables and berries / fruits. I am not strict at all and the window is 9AM-3PM, sometimes skipping breakfast all together for a 20/4 IF.
Dropped a stone and a half since Thanksgiving. Again, the goal did not include losing weight.

My mom used to make them every year. She'd make 8 of them, some walnut filling, some poppyseed filling. What was amazing was she'd do it without the benefit of a KitchenAid or similarly powered mixer. My sister and I have made it a couple times using my mom's recipe, and we couldn't make the dough without the KitchenAid.

the good is there are few better pain softners out there, and it is important to soften not eliminate pain.
When you eliminate it you wind up doing big orthopedic damage to yourself.

One is a long roll with either a walnut or poppyseed filling, sliced like bread, and kolachkes are cookies filled with preserves (apricot is my favorite), folded over, and dusted with powdered sugar.

The MDs had me on Gabapentin for my sciatica for a time. I didn't have any issues coming off of it once it did it's job (and wow!, did it!) but the Drs both stressed it was definitely NOT for long term.

God gets all the credit for that. All a syrup maker does is try not to screw up the sap as he or she removes the water from it. The only credit I will take is that I'm completely fanatical about taking care of the sap prior to boiling. It's basically growth medium and you can't let it get warm or critters start to grow in it. I had coffee and leftover birthday cake. Publius' dad just turned 94 on the 30th. Some of his friends came by to celebrate him. First time he's gotten together with them since this Covid crap began. I hadn't seen him this animated in a long time.
His wife asked me if I thought it was safe, and I said that life isn't worth living if you can't get together with friends. What are you staying "safe" for, if not that?
