The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant forced us to readjust our protocols almost immediately upon arrival to attempt to stay ahead of any potential spread. This included daily testing and the team quarantine requirement when positive cases were confirmed.” IIHF president Luc Tardif

Quote II

“We all knew it would happen eventually, today it did. Over a half million followers gone in a blink of an eye. That means I must have been on the mark, so to speak. Over the target. It also means we lost a critical component in our fight to stop these vaccines being mandated for children and to stop the corruption in our governments, as well as the medical-industrial complex and pharmaceutical industries. Robert Malone, MD.

Quote III

“”Because I know that ever since that day, I don’t feel safe anymore. I don’t feel safe going to do my errands, groceries, anything because I’m always looking over my shoulder and I shouldn’t be living this way.” Lourdes Medina

Quote IV

“I can’t run myself ragged working here all day and then working my second job all night just to make ends meet, every single day Monday through Friday, plus working on the weekends. I don’t have any time for myself. I don’t even have time to grade papers outside of class.” Mahalia Aponte

You want green energy? Unfortunately it comes with costs of its own.

Native Americans Rejecting Biden’s Green Energy Revolution Infrastructure

Native Americans recoiling in horror at plans to desecrate their lands, by extracting the minerals and building the transmission lines President Biden needs to fulfil his promised green energy revolution.

“They used to say you could walk across the river on the backs of salmon,” he said one rainy autumn morning as he tallied and measured the depleted stocks of young Chinook salmon that hosta in these mountain creeks. “Now, it’s totally different. It’s devastating, if you think about it.”

President Joe Biden came into office vowing to safeguard Native American resources like these and uphold the rights of tribes. But in the rolling headwaters of central Idaho, where mining interests have long overrun tribal rights, the administration’s promise is colliding with another priority: starting a renewable energy revolution.

Four Plastic Spoons?!? Oh my!!

Last year, we were learning how to live in quarantine. This year, we’ve perfected it: Boredom, curiosity, horniness, and an awful lot of time stuck at home have combined to make it a banner 12 months for shoving objects inside ourselves that cannot be removed without the aid of a trained professional. Here now, the traditional holiday recounting of the weirdest stuff hospitals found in America’s holes.

All reports are taken from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s database of emergency room visits, all descriptions are verbatim, and jesus christ what no don’t put that there that doesn’t go there.

As always, objects are sorted by orifice, working south:

I thought I loved fishing and I'm not a bad fisherman. I have nothing on congressional committees.

Far-Left Jan 6 Commission Demands Bank Records of Trump Staff in Bizarre Intimidation Attempt.

Taylor Budowich – Director of Communications for Save America and President Donald J. Trump – released a statement after the unconstitutional January 6th Committee sent a subpoena to JP Morgan Chase for his banking records.

The statement reads in full:

“Democracy is under attack. However, not by the people who illegally entered the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, but instead by a committee whose members walk freely in its halls every day. After complying completely with the Committee, including sitting for a four-hour deposition on December 22nd, I returned home on December 23rd only to find a notice from my banking institution, JP Morgan Chase, that they’d be handing over my banking records to the committee if I did not provide a court-ordered stoppage by December 24th. To add to the absurdity, neither the committee nor JP Morgan Chase will provide me with a copy of the actual contents of the subpoena. By circumventing my Constitutionally-protected rights, this Committee is only proving one thing: the Constitution only applies if your political party is in charge.

The ONT Musical Interlude

An Expert Explains Why All Your Classic Rock Heroes Are Selling Their Catalogs.
David Chidekel offers insight into Bruce Springsteen's massive deal with Sony and more

Earlier this month, Bruce Springsteen made history by selling his entire body of work — his songwriting catalog and his masters — to Sony for a reported $550 million. The Springsteen deal is by far the biggest of its kind, but just the latest example of what has become a growing trend: rock stars of a certain age cashing out by selling their publishing rights for massive sums of money.

Last year, Bob Dylan sold his entire songwriting catalog to Universal Music Publishing for upwards of $300 million. Neil Young, Stevie Nicks, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, the Beach Boys and David Crosby all followed suit with similar deals. But why, all of a sudden, are investors so willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on song catalogs?

That's a good doggeh. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

DUBUQUE — Steve Vincent glanced down at the dog standing patiently beside his chair.

“Get it,” he commanded.

Doc, a 2-year-old yellow Lab, immediately picked up the leash that Vincent had dropped, returning it to his owner.

“Thank you,” responded Vincent, a resident of Maquoketa.

Nearby, Dubuquer Garland Shirley patted his own dog, Smitty, who lay quietly at his side. Like Doc, Smitty sported a black vest proclaiming his status as a service dog.

Vincent and Shirley were paired with Doc and Smitty through IOWA (Inspiring Our Warriors of America) Service Dogs.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports the nonprofit, launched in 2019, provides mobility and psychiatric service dogs to first responders and veterans at no cost. Shirley and Vincent are the first two “warriors” to graduate the program with their canine companions.

Federal prosecutors have charged a 43-year-old Tennessee woman with interfering with a flight crew.

A criminal complaint alleged Amanda Henry disrupted a Spirit Airlines flight and punched and kicked flight attendants.

The charge comes amid the Justice Department's crackdown on unruly or violent passengers aboard commercial aircraft.

Federal prosecutors in Tennessee announced Tuesday that they charged a woman with interfering with a flight crew, accusing her of kicking and hitting flight attendants and screaming that she wanted to get off the plane.

The incident, aboard a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Nashville, occurred on November 27 after two airline passengers asked to change seats because a women's "disruptive behavior made them feel uncomfortable," according to a criminal complaint.

The woman, 43-year-old Amanda Renee Henry, had "acted flirtatious" and "made lewd sexual advances" toward the passengers, placing her hands on both of them and even laying her head on one passenger's shoulder, the complaint said.

A flight attendant told federal authorities that Henry — who appeared drunk — grew "irate and belligerent" once the men moved to different seats. The complaint said Henry grew even more disruptive when the flight attendants asked her to move to a different row, away from the emergency exits.

Newt Gingrich: Hillary Clinton's Going to Run instead of Biden in 2024

Newt in general has always been a little hit and miss. You get the regular establishment sellout Paul Ryan/McConnell vibe at times, but (as I recall) they did pass some conservative legislation with the Contract with America.

Hillary(!) running again would be amazing. If (when) it's clear Biden won't, she might take another shot. If she makes it to the general and loses again, after seeing Biden fraudulently emplaced...she'll have a legendary drunken meltdown.

Bill WILL die during the campaign for sympathy points.

81 @28 So her entire complaint is that the school district sends out paychecks over twelve months, rather than over just nine months?

----

It looks like they're paying her for seven months instead of nine because she started late, which is fine. But that seven months worth of pay is paid out over a ten month period of time (if she'd started at the beginning of the year, it would be nine months of pay paid out over twelve months), which is odd. I would hazard a guess that it's something in the union agreement due to too many teachers not being able to save their money for the summer when they're not working.

At least people got 180 degrees with Biden. Maybe seeing all the losing right after all that glorious winning will spell doom for Democrats for a decade or four.

I know. I know. Blue cities decay and vote in the same people again and again. But I'm hoping this recent two years of pain is a stark reminder to people that Democrats are evil, idiotic and desperate to destroy everything.

Does anyone actually think that the "lost" Epstein tapes aren't actually in the hands of pro-HRC minions at the bureau, to be used just as over 900 FBI files HRC got her hands on in 1993 were used? To further her ambitions? Of course they will be.

They often have the option to get paid during just their term or to have the checks split over the whole year instead, which obviously helps those who can't budget their money to save their life.

Young teachers used to understand they needed to teach summer school or get a temp job during the summer to make up for the fact they only work ~190 days a year in their regular job and don't have the senority pay veteran teachers get.

But now they just whine they don't get paid like jobs that work 80 hour weeks.

No, teachers are paid for school year (but not all holidays) and the pay is paid evenly over a year. This was a boon to districts in high-interest times and made it so teachers didn't have a low paycheck after breaks.

I can see why this teacher would be unpleasantly surprised that her pay was being withheld for a later date, especially if other districts had given her "real-time" pay.

None of the bowl games, save for the college football playoff games, are anywhere near reflective of the teams from the regular season. Between players out due to COVID protocols and players sitting out for the NFL draft and players putting themselves in transfer portal, none of these teams have all their players from the regular season.

Just heard on broadcast Oregon's 2 starting CBs are not playing and none of their scholarship LBs are playing. And I think they mentioned earlier that most of their WRs are not playing either.

In the big scheme of things, pretty well. Still weathering some lingering consequences. Biggest problems are strength, equilibrium, and concentration. 367 @309: "I think so. I believe he was friends with McCartney and when Jackson swooped in and got the Beatles catalog instead of him it ended their friendship."

Story goes that Michael stayed with the McCartney's back in '81 or '82 when they were collaborating on a few songs, and Paul brought out a scrapbook to show Michael which of his song publishing rights he still owned. It was a mentoring moment of sorts; trying to warn and educate Michael about the business side of the music industry. Little did he know that Michael and his family didn't sell out at the beginning, and just three years later, Michael would be sitting on a monstrous pile of cash in the wake of Thriller's success.

447 looking around at news stories tonight, found a new one that tickled me. the Biden Admin is formally asking the Supreme Court to reverse the 5th Circuit's ruling that the admin had to continue the remain in Mexico policy. Why is this funny? Because this was the most brutal opinion anyone has ever seen from any Court, and everyone thought the Admin wouldn't want anyone to ever mention it again.

some of the language in that ruling: "DHS's proposed approach is as unlawful as it is illogical. Under Supreme Court and Fifth Circuit precedent, this case is nowhere near moot. And in any event, the vacatur DHS requests is an equitable remedy, which is unavailable to parties with unclean hands. The Government's litigation tactics disqualify it from such equitable relief."

in other words, you dirty crooks don't deserve any deference from this Court.

448 What is interesting to me, and probably only to me, is that for several hundred years, instruments were invented, toyed with, and experimented with... and that after 1950, all popular music is played with a guitar and a keyboard.
Or, if Latino, throw in some horns.
Country, throw in some short strings.
We've missed out on so much nuance.
I'll bet in 200 years, Bach will still be a thing, and Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky, but Zappa will be an asterisk, at best.

468 @458: "Someone noted good players are opting out of playing ..."

Secondary college bowl games lost some of their luster with the introduction of playoffs back in 2013, and kids just don't buy into the pretense of collegiate legacy and school honor as much these days.

Opting out became a thing maybe three or four years ago, and has been slowly picking up steam ever since. If you're projected to be drafted in the first two or three rounds, and your school isn't in the final four playoff, then there's no sane reason to play a senior year bowl game unless you really, really like your teammates.

473 It seems that way but all simple pop music performance recordings are anchored narrowly to their era. It will all go to dust with us. B's 9th, V's requiem, others are transcendent. They were are much more than the men who wrote them. And they come to us over and over through live performance and interpretation. Classical pieces are necessarily living works and recordings are dead. Remembering the dead fondly is very good. But it will fade.

493 Whether Murray Wilson got taken by Capitol or not depends on when he made the deal. It is really an 80s and up thing that old pop music had any financial value. Even the early Beatles figured they would be done in less than five years, which is why Ringo bought a hairstyling salon as his wife was a hairdresser. Figured they could live on it once the Beatles were done.
Beach Boys, at least classic Beach Boys, created a completely new and unique sound. Sure, elements of it were lifted from other forms of pop music, but not put together. And nobody else (except for blatant copies, often with Brian's participation) ever did anything like them.

Mom recently had a skin cancer removed, and a skin graft added to the surgery site; the dermo instructions called for bandage changes and regular applications of vaseline.

Worked, too. No infections. It's all healed up.

501 A good reason to own CDs is found in the music of Dire Straits. If you happen to hear "Money For Nothing" on the radio, listen closely. The verse referencing "that little faggot" has disappeared. Happened a couple years ago and I haven't heard it since. My favorite band has been around since the 60's and has lost many members including Pigpen and Jerry and still has their own station on Sirius and starting the week after next the new iteration will be playing 2 huge shows for sold out audiences in an annual show in in Cancun. My best friends are going with the whole family including the next generation who loves the music. Both shows sold out in minutes.

Some things endure even if they aren't for everyone.

Posted by: banana Dream at December 29, 2021 11:39 PM (mPyRa)

I don't know about that. As time moves on the trend seems to be to make classical more and more tedious and completely impenetrable. A recording may be "dead" as you put it but a recording preserves the original intent and spirit of a song far better than some high society faggot conductor who thinks "boring shite" is synonymous with "art."

You can sometimes find old classical pieces performed on era-appropriate instruments played as intended and I'll tell you what it gets freakin' *lively*.

True. But there aren't that many stations playing Bach either but it endures. Great music always does have an audience even if it becomes more, er, selective.

Who knows how people will be listening to music in 100 years. Might have it implanted for all we know. But there will be strings and horns and drums and voices, the good stuff will last.

577 I like all kinds of music, was on a steady diet of rock in the 70s, have enjoyed classical since I was a kid, and really got into swing, jazz and post-war R&B in the last 20 years or so (although I've been a fan of boogie-woogie since I was probably around five years old, since my dad listened to it all the time). Each genre has its own particular appeal. With swing, it was the sheer joy expressed in the music that captivated me. Count Basie, Earl Hines, Cab Calloway, Charlie Barnett, and a host of other famous and lesser known outfits created music that just made you glad to be alive. And if you liked to dance, they could produce sounds and rhythms that made it impossible to stand still. Bebop on the other hand impressed me with the virtuosity of the soloists; Gillespie, Parker, McGee, Navarro - they did things that had never been done before, and would rarely be done again with their passing. But boogie was always my favorite, whether it was the raw energy of the original big three - Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons - or the lightning-fingered dexterity of Freddie Slack and Harry "The Hipster" Gibson - there's no music that resonates within me more.

578 To say nothing of more explicit material like Clapton's 'Cocaine' or...really, quite a lot of 70s rock was explicitly about drugs.

MX has mulitple genres from Mariachi and Norteno to adult contemporary that could have been sung by Julio Iglesias. They also do a form of Cumbia and Salsa and Cuban jazz, but it all is pretty formulaic. There is even MX punk and rap, and I must say that one has never heard banal until one has heard Spanish Rap music.

Posted by: Duke Lowell at December 30, 2021 12:54 AM (eA1RV)

Well when that album came out the winds of metal were blowing hard, and AC/DC really wasn't a metal band, but a very hard blues based rock. The very first band I was in did a good amount of bon scott AC/DC, and because there was so many pivotal metal albums coming out around that time AC/DC could have very well been left in the dust. The metal clubs in jersey were booming. You had albums like Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell", Judas priest's "British Steel", Iron Maiden's "Killers", and a bunch of others, and people were screaming to hear that stuff in the clubs. The Back in Black album guaranteed that AC/DC was on the map right at that time, and it had the right sound. Circling back to the band I was in, we were thinking of dropping AC/DC to make room for some of this newer more powerful stuff. When Back in Black came out were like oh we gotta do some of those songs, and we weren't the only ones. AC/DC became big shit in the clubs, and that album did it.

The critics dug him, and he had a cult, but it wasn't till Brucie simpled it out and turned into a cartoon that he got huge and rich. Guess Brucie wanted to be rich.

That wasn't Karens, that was what was called the Religious Right, the same folks who banned liquor in restaurants in Virginia. Then expect people to consider taking it? Short of Travis Scott or Nas

682 @676: "... Baywatch for a few episodes and also was in Playboy?"

Oakland Raiders cheerleader and she did Married with Children too! I'm not sure if Cain mentioned it, but it sounds like the argument started over a Rosa Parks reference?

Stewardess was in the way with a drink cart, Karen complained, stewardess told her to grab an empty seat for a minute or two, Karen compared herself to Rosa Parks, and that's when the older guy snarked that she wasn't black, she wasn't on a bus, and they weren't in Alabama.

Maybe it's just me, but when non-airline staff start getting outta their seats to help subdue me, then I'd take that as a clear signal that maybe I should simmer down.

Luciferase is not a product. It's a class of enzyme that is responsible for some forms of bioluminescence. That's all. "Lucifer" is latin for "light bringer". Which was used as the translation for a Hebrew word, and that became the name of the pre-rebellion Satan.

687 @679: "Why name a product Luciferase?"

Luciferase is a name derived from latin -- means light bringer -- and was coined in the late 1800s by a French scientist doing research on bioluminescence. Basically, lightning bug belly goo, and how it works.

Posted by: Walter Freeman at December 30, 2021 01:57 AM (+WWsf)

688 >> by a French scientist doing research on bioluminescence.

Raphael Dubois. Looking it up, he coined the term luciferase for the enzyme, and luciferin for the substrate.

Luciferase catalyzes an oxidation reaction with the luciferin substrate, and light is emitted.

The reaction is very energy efficient, with 80 - 90% of the energy release being converted to light. Nature figured out some very efficient light bulbs with luciferase and luciferins.
