28 Looks like an Astounding or Galaxy cover for one of Asimov's Robot stories! Love it!

It's a shame for a good SF fan to admit it, but I don't have a copy of I, Robot (the collection of short stories) at home. Each one is remarkably clever (which means they would not go over well today with the dumbed-down and non-reading populace).

First Law
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

81 I am impressed with Donato Giancola's talent and imagination. Although the scene is different, the solid look and feel of the painting reminds me of Frazetta. In this case the solid blocks of realistic water against the metallic sheen of the robot and the stonework in the background gives the feel of strength, age, and a new entity in a human conundrum. It is very effective and invites the viewer to imagine the story that was and that night come.

BTW, Giancola has done some excellent paintings from LOTR and other Middle-Earth stories.

Thanks to OM and CBD for this morning's art. A new artist to learn about.

True. One of the best of the early Asimov stories, "Little Lost Robot," focuses on this. The robots at a mining installation are continually rushing in to "help" humans who are going into the radioactive mine to work. So a new group are produced, with a modified First Law -- they *can* stand by and allow humans to risk their own necks. It develops into a terrific and suspenseful detective story.

Noticed the "Judging Fauci" article in "American Thinker" is all about Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s book, "The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health."

Good to see that getting more exposure. Though sadly, the article points out that the mainstream media is basically censoring the book's existence since they can't let the public be aware of all the facts in the book. No book tour, no interviews. Gotta protect their godking Fauci.

In a sane world, this book should be mandatory reading for every elected official... federal, state and local.

His disapproval ratings have jumped 20 points since he took office, reaching a record high this month. The number who strongly disapprove jumped 6 points since a Marist poll conducted just one week earlier..

Perhaps the most alarming drop for the White House and Democrats heading into the midterm election year is Biden's support among independents. Two-thirds of independent voters disapprove of Biden, including half who strongly disapprove. Both numbers are up at least 30 points since he took office. Just 29 percent of independents approve of his job performance.

That said, these polls are really useless. Disapprove of Biden over what exactly? Unless that's in the poll results somewhere, this tells me nothing. Just like it told me nothing when people say they disapprove of Trump. Why people disapprove of Biden and his performance would be useful. Because then we'd know if people are rejecting the Left or just rejecting Biden's performance of executing the Left's agenda (but agree with the Left's agenda overall and just want a new figurehead to replace him).

On a related note: my Chrome browser provides me with Party-line propaganda every time I open it, and I scroll the list as religiously as I do the Morning Report, because it's good to have a daily roll-up of regime talking points, straight from the techlords.

For months now, every single day, it has included one or more venomous condemnations of the right-wing hatemonger (their words, not mine) Joe Rogan. He's become a minor Goldstein-figure in their narrative.

What I see is disapproval of Biden hammering the underlying support of the Democratic Party in general. Whether it's coming from the right or the far left, the decrease in support means a decrease in enthusiasm. That means less donated money and fewer volunteers for efforts like Get Out the Vote. "He's too socialist" or "He's not socialist enough" ends up having similar effects to the Democratic Party as a whole.

Now, longer term, what does any of this mean? Not a whole lot unless there is a counterbalance to Biden that can outweigh him in the minds of the electorate. Another Trump-like term where real dollar wages increase will do more to enhance the perception of American political conservatism than anything else.

Self-driving car AI requires that the robot be in the position to take a human life. Scenario: self-driving car is cruising down the street, and kid runs into the street. There is not time to stop and there are obstacles on all sides. The AI has a choice:
1. Evade, and cause a collision with a stationary object (car, tree, etc.) and put the driver at risk of serious injury or death
2. Do not evade, protect the driver and hit the kid, putt in the kid at risk of serious injury or death

When we (humans) make this call, we live with the consequences whatever they are. Who will the robot be programmed to kill or injure? What ethical code is embedded? What are the overrides? How does it make a value judgement? This is not a future problem, it's a right-now problem.

As much as it pains me to agree with the left about anything, yes, people lie in their private diaries, and suicide notes, all the time. Why would they do that? After seeing diaries and other sources of documentation successfully used in trials and lawsuits, some people create crimes and injuries. In my experience, I had a small group of female patients do this as a joint venture. They accomplished their goal and got someone fired as well as other goals. How do I know it was untrue, because the time lines were incorrect and because one of the people admitted the plan. They hadn't really wanted to see the staff member prosecuted, and luckily this evidence prevented this. You see, one of their group felt rejected, so she got her group involved in a "revenge".
Some people write what they want to have happened, and others want to saturate friends and family with guilt after their demise due to their anger over other matters which seemed huge at the time.

And who is liable for the death? The driver? The auto company? Or, like in the case of the Waukesha terrorist attack, will it be blamed on "the car"?

This is what I never understood about why auto companies were embracing autonomous driving. Seems like every single accident would change liability from the driver to the automaker.

A debate to be held someday in the US Congress or State Legislatures. Not so much about who gets priority to be protected from injury, but who has liability for injuries, deaths, and property damages, to what if any dollar limits. Today I believe all of the manufacturers of self-driving vehicles on public roads are self-insured.

It's a known side effect of the vaccines. My thought is that it might be more widespread than though, but never really takes off because most people aren't active enough to aggravate it and it might pass without causing serious problems because most people's hearts aren't all that stressed. Athletes, however, *are* stressing their bodies virtually all the time, especially soccer. We make fun of soccer players, but they're in peak condition and run a ton with virtually no breaks. I'm just wondering if their behavior profile is stressing something that might be a lot more common but less severe in those who don't stress their bodies as much.

Gibson, I think, was trying to get to the old term meaning for a 'Passion play'. To really bring forth the idea that man is sunk in vice and cruelty and here was this Man, the Son of God, who loved us enough to endure the worst of our evil to set us free from the stain of our Sin.

I cannot speak for Gibson, but that is what I took away from the movie.

Posted by: 18-1 at December 20, 2021 10:47 AM

That was my first thought as well. I also think politicians are lying about getting the shots. We know they're lying about the treatments they get too (i.e. they're getting Ivermectin and HCQ and monoclonal antibodies, while banning that for the rest of us). And we know that the drug company employees aren't getting the shots either. They are only being forced on the rest of us.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at December 20, 2021 10:55 AM (csEWM)

380 mandate vaccinated people go to hospitals and clinics and subject themselves to a process designed to infect them with Omicron.

Since the only positive thing the clot shots seem to do is reduce symptoms for 3-6 months, arguably they should be intentionally infecting people about 2 months in.

Then you get immunity from COVID and a lesser chance of getting seriously ill from it.

Of course you get the risk of blood clotting and heart damage too...

I think so too, which is why the NFL didn't make a bigger deal out of Aaron Rodgers. Though their suspension of Antonio Brown for 3 games seemed a bit excessive. Rodgers just went into protocols and missed one game for not being "vaccinated". But 3 game suspension for Brown for offending the NFL with a fake "vaccine card". So the serious crime in the NFL's eyes was fake ID, not unvaxxed status.

469 Was it that doctor in the Joe Rogan interview recently who said you cannot be infected with COVID-19 twice? I think he said that you can get it once and then next time you think you have it, it is likely a different coronovirus (common cold) or the flu. But he said it is not possible to be infected with it more than once.
Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 20, 2021 11:12 AM (Do5/p)

He also said that if you have had it twice, congrats because that make you the only person on earth in 2 years.

472 I was looking at Amazon's gift pages. They are so condescending and gross, it is just weird. They seem to be aimed at and written by people with a 9 year old emotional intelligence.

And then they tick every single "box" with each featured person. They have the flaming gay box, the fat lady box, the ethnic box. No "normal" people box. They don't check that because that would be racist or something.

473 The sad reality is robots will be programmed to be leftards.

I don't think they've entirely figured out how to do that yet. The panic every time some AI conforms with reality and immediately has its plug pulled for being "dangerously right wing" is pretty entertaining though.

474 Vikings and the "blood eagle" trivial thought : it's said that they did it through the back , but when you consider human physiology, the only way it would work would be to split the sternum and expose the lungs through the front.

Well that's the kind of things that come to mind when I think about Pelosi and Schumer.

Must be a coincidence.

Has Senile Joe been installed in a total isolation bubble yet? Any type of COVID may not be a mild problem for him. And Nanzi and half the Democrats in both houses of Congress.

Wouldn't a series of mutations allow Covid to escape a person's immunity if the virus mutates enough? Although, natural immunity recognizes so many proteins from the virus that it's difficult for the virus to mutate enough to not be recognized. Hmmm.

I ask because I've wondered if we ought to try to keep a backup of ivermectin and/or HCQ on hand. Even if we can't catch Covid again, those drugs may be useful for other viruses that may "escape" from some lab.

perhaps what we're dealing with is a vaccine that doesn't work. Or was too specific, offering at most protection against a single version of the spike protein.

As I understand it, offering at most some protection for some limited time frame. And I find even that somewhat dubious.

It's not. It's a hack attempting to trick the body into doing something it normally doesn't do.

And the body is reacting accordingly.

It's a crime against humanity and heads should roll for forcing it upon the public.

500 Scarborough cited the example of "Jumpin" Jim Jeffords. In 2001, the late Senator from Vermont flipped from the GOP to the Democrats, handing them the Senate majority: "Democrats think it can't get worse. Oh! It can always get worse. I don't know what is going on, since Omicron is supposedly becoming the dominant variant and is mild, but we're recently lost or nearly lost quite a few people in our social sphere. In every case, the patient did not receive early treatment. Also, going to the hospital after symptoms progress looks to be a death sentence. One friend saved his father's life by forcing the hospital to stop administering Remdesivir.
