Daily Tech News 14 December 2021

Top Story

  • News continues to be quiet, which reminds me of what I did this time last year.

And I'll do it again if you're not careful.

Only one of the videos in the December 31 post is dead, and I know which it is, and I think there's an alternate source.

  • Open source is not broken. (Nadh.in)

The argument is not wrong in itself but it doesn't really address the claim. The author is trying to say that just because the cause of open source software's breakage is outside of open source that open source is not broken, but that's nonsense.

It's important to identify the cause, but it's just as important to recognise the wreckage.

(This is in response to an earlier article in response to the Log4j debacle.)

3 Oh my, my former employer uses Kronos.

I am actually familiar with many of the terms used in this post-- a rarity.

7 When we first got the Kronos system, had to badge-in and then authenticate with fingerprint. Hated the fingerprint thing, it would reject my print more than half the time! Well, to be fair, it was mostly due to dry skin-- exacerbated by gardening.

WooFloo is to be thanked for ending that particular PITA.

(Sips coffee)

I do have Linux on my ancient desktop. I keep it updated but don't use it much. I do like Linux Mint quite a bit.

Can't sleep. I'm off today. Might as well hit the grocery store this early morning.

12 In another life I had to check my staff's hours/break times and sign off on it, in Kronos. It was a PITA. Certain employees never did figure it out.

Posted by: JuJuBee at December 14, 2021 03:48 AM (mNhhD)

13 Hey, JQ ! Ditto.

Same old, same old. Except, this cold thing has me dragging. Went out to dinner with former co-workers last night and stayed out past my bed time.
It was a nice break from the daily grind, but feeling it this a.m. !

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 14, 2021 03:51 AM (1R0vU)

14 JuJuBee--

Bosses here didn't like it either. Ended up doing so many manual entries/overrides it was just another time-waster for them.

Company wanted to catch more tardy/absenteeism, I figure.

15 On the way home I had a headlight out. Of course nothing was open to grab replacement bulbs. I'm guessing I'm going to get stopped on my way in to work this morning. There is always a cop sitting in wait on a stretch of road I can't avoid.
(Second car is in the shop for repairs, so no taking that one.)

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 14, 2021 03:56 AM (1R0vU)

16 I used to leave the house around 4am for w*rk. (3am when on OT shift) Earlier if roads were bad. Took 20-30 minutes to get there in good weather. Ugh!

Don't miss it. The $$$ was nice, though.

Posted by: JQ at December 14, 2021 04:02 AM (dB4Iz)

17 Oh no, MLii... Hopefully if cop stops you, he'll be lenient.

Posted by: JQ at December 14, 2021 04:04 AM (dB4Iz)

18 Trying to be out the door earlier than usual this week. Taking all but 2 hours off on Thursday's to watch the grandbaby messes with my work load. I'd rather go in early than stay late to get my stuff done.

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 14, 2021 04:07 AM (1R0vU)

19 Well, I woke up to look for the meteor shower but I didn't see any. Whether that was because it was too late or there was too much light I don't know. I will try again tomorrow. There were some lovely stars, though and it was quiet. Anyway, I thought of Psalm 136 which says in verse 9 that God made "The moon and the stars to govern by night". It is a wonderful psalm beside that because it says repeatedly that Gods mercy endures forever.

Back on my overnite paper delivery days I'd see many walkers, joggers, dog-walkers out and about without any type of aid for drivers to see them. Always had to be on lookout. I got used to the regulars over time, but there would always be new ones popping up.

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 14, 2021 04:35 AM (1R0vU)

33 Got pulled over in my new (at that time) car. Had only had it a couple weeks, was driving through town.

Headlights were off, it was nighttime but raining hard and all the streetlights and shops' signs were reflected in the water-- I couldn't tell!

Young cop gives me the speech about safety yadda yadda and lets me off with a warning. Whew!

That's when I realized: the dash lights up whenever the car is running! All my other cars? Only when the headlights were on.

38 33: When I first bought my car, my first long trip was to NW PA. I live in the DC burbs so there are always lights on. You forget that when you're in an area like rural PA. I visited a friend in rural Ohio and left after a storm blew through. It was dark, really dark. I checked my lights, they were on. I then remember I have never used my high beams. I had no idea where they were. I don't need them in Babylon DC. So, I pulled over and started to look for them. I did find them eventually. Not the brightest dude around.

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 14, 2021 04:43 AM (1R0vU)

40 Yeah, I leave the lights in 'auto' mode-- otherwise, I'll forget to turn them on. Because the dash won't be dark!

Posted by: JQ at December 14, 2021 04:43 AM (dB4Iz)

41 That's hilarious, Puddleglum!

But I get it. I was surprised when cars first began having highbeam switch on the column somewhere, instead of the ol' button on the floor.

One old car had that button, but it wasn't for highbeams... push it and the wipers would do a single swipe. I LOL'd.

Posted by: JQ at December 14, 2021 04:48 AM (dB4Iz)

42 Our town it is high risk factor for getting pulled over for headlight out. One of our cars was notorious for burning out headlights and I think I was 3 for 3 on trips into town with a light out. I was asked if there was anything wrong as I seemed 'agitated'

Posted by: a dude in MI at December 14, 2021 04:48 AM (+I6Y/)

43 Agitated. No doubt!

44 Mornin', all,

Pixy's warning up above about Kronos for payroll -- worrisome. My employer uses it and has for a number of years. I'm salaried not hourly, and we only get paid 1x a month, but still my data is in there.

Auto headlights: Yes, I have to leave them set to auto mode, or I'd forget to turn them on now. My cars before about 2003 didn't have an auto setting (I can't recall if the '86 Mercedes had that, or the second Oldsmobile).

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 14, 2021 04:52 AM (c6xtn)

45 Annoying to me is people driving this early and no lights, see lots of joggers and dog walkers but for most part are well lighted up or reflectors.

46 Oh, and for those following his storied career, Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat continues to hold ground. He still creeps around like an arthritic badger, but overall he's doing well and looks good. Thanks to whoever suggested I check Chewy.com for his Rx food. They had it, the same price as Petco, and will ship it straight to my office.

Chekov is due for a visit to the shop this Saturday to check on his progress. $$$, I'm sure, but as I no longer have a car payment, my real concern is that they may find something else worrisome.

Yesterday I got an email, a legit one from the IT people, saying that my access to a couple of systems would be turned off as of 12/15 "due to a recent organization change." Recent? I moved from my previous job, "organization," within my employer to my current one 3.5 years ago. I got in touch with them, and they are looking into this. I can put in the necessary access requests, but now I wonder --

62 Badge/sensor malfunctions were fairly common. Mostly badge-- so you'd tell the boss, HR would send a new RF sticker, no problem. Except for the longer walk around until you got it.

Heck, the turnstiles sometimes had issues, too.

Of course, for us hourly peons, it was never due to surprise layoff-- the company always asked for 'volunteers' first-- and were very good about helping us thru the maze of unemployment claim.

I had a supervisor who -- without warning, mind you -- took me up to the owner's office and had the secretary fire me. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I told her, "Don't trust him [the supervisor]. If he'll lie to me, he'll lie to you." As he was walking me out, I swerved aside, stuck my head into the morning staff meeting, and said, "He just fired me, guys. Good luck, and don't trust him."

I heard later that he got fired himself -- by his own replacement. Heh, heh, heh.

188 Unfortunately, when it comes to taboo language, it is a common assumption that people who swear frequently are lazy, do not have an adequate vocabulary, lack education, or simply cannot control themselves.

You know the culture is rotting when there is more cursing and foul language in Christmas programming on the Hallmark channel than there was in "Scarface", "Hitman's Bodyguard." or a Bill Burr comedy routine.

189 Hallmark comparison to Scarface? That's Jesus level hyperbole there, Mr. Hick.

194 The whole mask cult needs a good slapping.

Last year when I went to the doctor's office, I had to call from the parking lot. Sure, okay. The office twit on the other end of the phone asked, "do you have a mask on?" I literally said, "In my own car, all by myself? No, I do not. I will wear one into your office." She didn't know how to reply.

I doubt anything has improved.

195 The big box office is dying because Hollywood makes nothing but total garbage. Nobody wants to see "woke" anything. Couple that with garbage movies overall, boring and trite stupidity, unimpressive "stars," abysmal remakes, complete lack of originality...all I can say is die. The sooner the better.

Posted by: Lady in Black at December 14, 2021 07:36 AM

My interest in anything Hollywood puts out has waned not really because of quality of product, but because of the quality of actors, actresses and people in Hollywood in general. The more these people have spoken out against America and Republicans and conservatives and Christians, etc over the years, the less I can tolerate watching these people in movies and TV.

I don't have very high expectations for movies or TV shows. I just want something entertaining and where I can escape from reality for a while. So I can enjoy movies and shows that most people think are stupid. But when I know the majority of the people in movies or shows have stated their hatred for people like me, that's when I stop watching.

199 If you're looking to go high end on the streaming, take a look at the Nvidia SHIELD TV Pro. It gives you access to most of the Android app library, including a really nice emulator front end called Hyperspin. I have this set up with a USB hard drive plugged in with several thousand classic arcade and console games. It also makes a good remote client for streaming games if you have a PC with an Nvidia GPU elsewhere in the house and want to use with the big screen occasionally for the right game.

200 In regards to progressive utopias and their inevitable demise, I'm reminded of the Mouse Utopia experiments.

Food? Water? Shelter? Given everything. Abundance. Rodent society couldn't cope, so they didn't, lasting only two years.

201 Thanks once again, Pixy.

Because I'm wee bit weird, I decided to see if I could build a radius server. I got it to work...right up to the serving of certificates to clients.

Authentication works great. Setting things up so the certificates work, well, not so much.

Bleeping computer.
