They are proposing a new law that says that people aged 14 and under in New Zealand will not allowed to legally purchase tobacco - ever.
The way it works is if the law goes into effect in 2022, 14 and younger can't buy tobacco. In 2023, 15 and younger. In 2024, 16 and younger, and so on. In 2073, only people older than 75 will be allowed to legally purchase tobacco.

I guess it just goes to show the world how superior morally the Allies were to the Axis (with the exception of the USSR basically starting WW2 by helping out the Germans with Poland). After suffering that many deaths at the hands of the Nazis and Japanese, it's actually surprising those two countries didn't have a Hell of a lot more of their citizens massacred after they surrendered. Rough justice that would have been in many eyes.

QDP's meltdowns were on the Quick Hits thread, just before the Cafe. Glorious in their foam-flecked, spittle-spewing rage and insanity. Alas, when whichever COB dropped the guillotine blade on QD's hash, it also dropped on all of his posts. Whether just in that thread or going back years in the archives, I do not know.
Pity that thread wasn't preserved in it's original form though. It was a Hillary-esque "Master's Class" in LOSING IT right in the middle of the food court at the mall. I did put a bow on it at post (now) 323, but alas, it went up after the smoke was let out of the box.

I personally hate when people go nuclear online because many of them have few if any friends in the real world. These days, a lot of people are on edge and without faith in something bigger are prone to overreaction.

I feel ya....my wife plays it all the time. I like the idea and the messages, but they tend to use the current pop sounds and production styles. Application is a pain in the butt, to do it right, you liquefy the cosmoline and dip the whole rifle in. Much easier to just use RIG grease and far cheaper too than the stuff Brownell's sells. Much easier to clean off. Boeshield can work to but best in conjunction with other products such as vci bag.

Because, generally, a second jury is not going to hold perjury by a previously-found-guilty defendant against him. If he had lied well enough to be found guilty, maybe. Yep, knew a guy who was assigned one of those Fox vehicles. They had a string of M8 alarms out. They had a report of mortar shells and telltale smoke clouds. Then the M8s went off sequentially in the direction of the wind.
They filed the report, and somewhere up higher came to visit, said not only was the report incorrect, but he had to destroy his notes.

In the fight, yes, absolutely. We should call and raise them on every level, and escalate all the way to thermonuclear war if that's what it takes to beat them. I love what Kyle did in Kenosha, shooting down rioting commies is always a day well spent in my book, and I'll order a drink to celebrate (probably a Rittenhouse, that's a chaser and 3 shots) while joking about how well he disarmed the third guy all night long.
Outside the fight, however, celebrating a murder, dancing on the grave of someone simply because they held different political beliefs than you - held them mind you, not acted out on them, that's the line - is not just crass and rude, it's evil and I firmly believe it corrodes the soul.
That's my choice, ymmv.

There's a Korean TV series - available on Netflix - called 'Mr. Sunshine' - that's set both during the lead-up to it, and after it happens. One of the main characters is a Korean who spent much of his life in the US, and has returned back to the country as one of the commanding officers in a fictional American military mission (note, however, that the American attack at the very start of the series really did happen, and is depicted more or less accurately).
The real problem, though, is that the Japanese occupation of Korea wasn't a military takeover. It was peaceful, and done through diplomatic means. The reigning dynast's government basically decided (over his objections) to make the country a part of Japan. This raises all sorts of ugly questions when you start investigating exactly what happened in Korea shortly after the Turn of the Century. Because the people responsible for the Japanese taking control in Korea... were the people in power in Korea. The modern Koreans - unsurprisingly - find that rather awkward and embarrassing.

This limits the stories that can get out. The enemy stories you can claim are lies and laugh. Your unit's stories they can threaten or actually lock those up repeating the story.

For the ones that really tee me off, I try to remember when we were kids and how they used to act. I'll forgive - but not forget, and carry on from there. Not always successful but it works for me.

The cobs put up with a lot of shit. I think that's why the mods here are mostly anonymous. I've known who one mod is, but I haven't seen that nic in years. But by and large, they're all doing a good job.

Portland at the turn of the 20th century was known for its bars, and one bar took up an entire block with entrances on each street.
One logger got tossed out for being drunk and disorderly and tried coming back through another door, and the bouncer pitched him out again.

That's always been my default base for everyone here.
It's just that now and then sparks get struck and it can easily spread rapidly or just fizzle and no one even saw it happening.
Usually the ones that get the most attention is a cob or ace hammering someone. When that happens I struggle sometimes to figure out what happened and why. Most times I just ignore it.

Usually, your observation here would be entirely correct, and I would agree. Take the old show "Cheers". Norm would walk into the bar, and everyone would yell: "NORRRMM!", and the scripted dialog would have some greetings, some witty conversation, and then the camera would shift to Woody or Cliff or whoever. Every now and then, there'd be a NORM-centric episode, just as there was a Woody episode or other cast member. But mostly, the ensemble and the show had a balance.
Now, picture the guy who played Norm, wanting to be given about 50% of the script lines, and about 70%/75% of the script THEMES being NORM shows. Cheers would've been off the air in a season. Or, the producers would've written the Norm character out of the show altogether. I think the COBS or Mods did that, last night. As mentioned above, QDP admitted to dropping lines into the threads to draw the conversation to his interests, his topics and questions. .. cont.

I did that mostly cause you could set up different pilots names and set different levels of difficulty. So if I didn't feel like getting my azz kicked I'd pick an easier pilot history.
I like that game. It could get boring tho cause they did it in real time and space travel takes lots of TIME. Even at super speeds.

Being in Jr and Sr High school choir we always had a Christmas concert. We always sneak in Playboy center fold in the choir teacher's music book. So as he his flipping through pages as we sing there is a picture of a naked girl. The look on their faces was priceless. The audience never saw it and when confronted later we all did the I am Spartacus routine.

There are ways to filter those guys out. Trouble is most people in these groups don't know how or don't believe it matters or think they've already spotted them.
Just read a few biographies of some rabble rousers and how they organized to keep the Gov't informers out. It's a situation that's happened over and over. But these guys are trained so they know how to appeal to whoever's running the group.
In fact some of them are so good they wind up being in control!

All through hotel there were staggering Knights of Columbus and just before I got to my I got stopped by one and he wanted to talk. After telling him go away he dropped "I bet you don't know who the Knights of Columbus are?" I said they are a social organization tied to the Catholic church and since you didn't stipulated the bet. I expect room service to have a steak dinner ready for me tomorrow night.
Sure enough, the next night I got call from room service asking about what steak dinner did I want delivered. The guy paid for it but I never knew his name.

I've been playing with my new Christmas present I bought for myself, which came yesterday. It's a Casio G-Shock "atomic" watch, which receives the reference time signal broadcast from Ft. Collins CO, and run by the NIST.
The darn thing can't sync inside the house. Watch says the signal level is good, so it must be noise from all the electronic crap inside. It will sync reliably outside. Go out, point the watch West, and it will sync.
So I bragged to Miley that no one can say that I don't know what time it is now. She asked, "But how do you know the govt. isn't lying to you about what time it is. I don't trust them". She knows how to mess with me.
And I think she has a point. Maybe the government is lying about what time it really is. Art Bell could have explored this topic well.

On a much sadder note. I lost Mike Hammer's Cat He suffered a stroke on Saturday night, an was euthanized on Monday. 20 years together, and I couldn't even be there to say goodbye.

I compared the results with the Casio and syncing the computer here just tonight. They agree within a fraction of second. Holding the watch next to the time display, the computer jumps to the next second just a noticeable bit faster than the watch.
"time.windows.com" is the default, although you can set it to use NIST servers. So if they're lying about the time, Bill Gates and the govt have their stories straight.

WWV transmits at 5, 10, and 15 mHz. Possibly a few others. They are a frequency standard as well as a time standard.

Not intentionally anywhere near. THe WWVB signal is a long wavelength, 60 kHz signal. But it's vulnerably to electronic and electrical noise, and I think that's what's going on inside the house.
The watch reports good signal inside the house, but always fails to sync with an error. Outside, no problem.

Most of these are police impounds, not write-offs. Some have minor damage. The Suburban I bought last year came from an impound yard, via an intermediate owner. I got an "e-title", and was then able, with no trouble, to get a good AZ title in my name. It has been a swell rig, and I still have it.

Because the motor and tranny were both in excellent shape. So I got an identical model same engine same trans that the engine was blown out on and swapped them. Then sold the engined loaner for scrap and drove around for quite a while on the swapped engine.
It was a Chevly LUV truck. Very easy to swap motors.

You know what else is a very accurate time reference? The US grid. While at any instant, the frequency can vary, they go to pains to make sure that such errors are averaged out over the long run, even slightly speeding up or slowly down (just a tiny little bit that wouldn't effect system stability) to make sure that the number of AC cycles over a period is correct.
Thus, over time, synchronous motor driven clocks are very accurate. Not so much short term, but over the long term, they are very accurate on average.

There's an old '60s era wall clock at my folks' house. Thing has been there since before I was born, and is just a fixture. If that clock wasn't there, where it was supposed to be, my whole world would be thrown out of whack.
It's mechanical, with a little PM synchronous motor driving it. The number of revolutions corresponds exactly with the number of AC cycles. It's damn accurate.
Even electronic clock radios and such with a circuit that counts cycles and calibrates will be very accurate over the long term.

I've noticed they put a lot of cheap electronic clocks in things now. Case in point -- electronic thermostats. The one here has battery backup, but is also powered by the 24V control transformer. That clock is a very poor internal circuit. It will be off by minutes over a month.

Well, they can't. You can't count what you don't see. You can count AC cycles, but if the power goes out, there's no cycles to count. And if the AC is the only source of power to the clock, it has no means of "knowing" how long the power was off. They could put a little BIOS chip, and lithium battery in there, so it could keep time like a PC does, but that would add a few dollars to the price.

Yes. But the battery backup clocks are very piss-poor. I've got several clock radios and alarm clocks that have a battery back-up. That clock is so inaccurate, it will drift a few seconds over just a few hours of loss of AC power.
They could get an order of magnitude better accuracy for just a little bit more cost per unit.
Even a relatively cheap Casio or similar digital watch will only drift a minute or so after years.

I used to think it was whenever I got a land line. Cause it was usually right after I got a phone that I wound up having to move. I even stopped getting a phone cause of that.
I think that's gotten cured with the mobile phones now. Don't know about the cat jinx. I can't have one where I'm at cause they charge a fee to have a pet.
