Teachers In California Decide That Working Five Days a Week Is Too Hard, and Give Themselves One Day A Week Off

Well, one day a week of "remote learning," sitting on their asses at home, which is what parents do not want, but which teachers do want.

And when parents complain, teachers tell parents to "step up" and do the hard work of teaching.

This is amazing.

I keep wondering what the breaking point is.

I'm wondering if there is a breaking point at all.

Do they even have to show up, ever?

Can we just admit that the "teaching occupation" is just a welfare program for a fairly low-educated, low-ambition bunch?

Remember when teachers unions around the country insisted they were eager to reopen schools but only once it could be done safely? Unions gave all sorts of excuses. First it was that not all teachers had been vaccinated. Then it was that schools lacked sufficient ventilation. Then it was that not all students had been vaccinated. The shifting list of demands had only one clear goal: Keep teachers (and students) out of classrooms for as long as possible. Even when local authorities tried to twist their arms, they refused to return.

And as the evidence piled up that remote learning wasn’t working for a large number of students, unions simply ignored or denied it. Cecily Myart-Cruz, president of the LA Teacher’s Union, claimed no learning loss had taken place during the 18 months LA schools were closed. “Our kids didn’t lose anything. It’s OK that our babies may not have learned all their times tables…They know the difference between a riot and a protest,” she said. Some unions claimed the push to get teachers back to classrooms was racist.

Fortunately, all of that is behind us now. Or maybe not. Today the NY Times reports that schools are extending time off and resorting to one day a week (or a month) as remote learning only...

As John Sexton reports, the teachers -- who clearly just wanted to stop working -- have given up using covid as an excuse to stop working, and are now offering the excuse that the "battles" over them taking time off during covid, as well as arguments about CRT, is just "too much" for them, and they need some Mental Health Days.

Sexton quotes this posting from a "veteran public school teacher" who encourages teachers to basically take as much time as they need to get their heads together, and, if parents don't like it, well then: Parents can teach their kids.

Veteran public school teacher here. I am hearing the same experiences over and over from my former colleagues (and on several private teacher-only message boards): rude parents, combative students, undermining administrators, useless curriculum, stagnant wages, total burnout. Some of their personal stories from the classroom this year would make your toes curl. We understand this is a profession that has its ups and downs, but the near-constant abuse and the general consensus for years that teachers are responsible for all of the ills of society have finally taken their toll. To the teachers in the trenches: I see you, and I support you. I know the invisible load you carry and the unseen work you do. If virtual Fridays help to make your life and mental health better, it's time for parents to step up and do their part.

Well, parents thought they were doing their part by paying people to teach their children.

If you're not willing to do that job, they can pay other people to teach their children, and fire your lazy, uneducated, ignorant asses.

This is incredible.

As Sexton says: Don't expect this to stop in LA. Once word gets out that this is going on in LA and teachers are getting away with it, teachers across the country will begin doing this.

Teachers have decided they are part of the "Laptop Class" they are so envious of, the upper middle class that can do almost all of their work remotely through a computer and via zoom meetings, and being envious of higher-status people, they've decided to convert teaching into a "Laptop Class" occupation against the wills of parents.

They're not that -- they're workers at a modest middle-class civil service job -- but they conceive of themselves as part of the Upper Middle Learned Classes and they're determined to gain both the salaries and non-pecuniary benefits that attend to those classes.

And if that's inconvenient for parents, who will have to make arrangements for someone to watch their children during school hours -- why they'll just have to "step up" then, won't they?

More at Sexton's link. And do hit it. I've taken so much from him today! But most of the quotes are back there, including more quotes from entitled teachers who obviously hate parents -- and children, too.

5 I am seeing the breaking point for some individuals. A mom I know who "can't homeschool" has decided it's charter or homeschooling from now on after clandestine emails were sent to her kids to survey their opinions on CRT. This is in Texas. There are MANY, however, who still have their heads firmly in the sand and others that need the "free" daycare. There are some, like the 20% or so that still support the Meat Puppet, who will simply never switch.

78 Only know indirectly, but seems here that Wednesdays have been half-days, and there are some Fridays or Mondays off, regularly. For some time. I think the total number of school days/hours is the same as the old days, but the calendar is different.

Like all good generalizations, there's more to the story, of course, but a solid short-hand description of one part of the problem is:

"When I was in school, teachers had second jobs. Now they have second houses."

Both parts absolutely true, at least in CA. Not a bit of exaggeration. Of course the "second house" is a minority, but completely unthinkable back when educational outcomes were vastly better, and teaching was a low-income stable job where most people had 2nd gigs in the summer.

But, I'm sure if you suggested all teachers of those age groups only work 4 days/week for 80% of other teachers' salaries, there'd be rebellion.

I mean, really, we could have that whole group be part time 3-4 hour/days 4 days/week and then allow the kids to go to daycare or home, and they'd learn more and probably be happier...teachers probably wouldn't be, but they don't seem to want to work anyway...

113 And "being ruled by school teachers" is no exaggeration (well, their union). Years back, just before CA completed its transformation into an utterly politically dead, one-party state, an incident made the news in Sacramento (well, it made the specialty news or forums, at least).

One of the top union lobbyists was yelling - berating - a state senator, in his office suite, in front of his staff.

Even if you've never worked in Congress or a legislature, this entire concept should strike you as completely insane, reflecting a collapsed system. Teacher's union runs CA as much as anything, any organization or entity.

Why I mentioned the Christian Schools in the area having huge waiting lists. My pastor moved from a small facility to taking over an abandoned public school about 10 years ago, and they're at capacity. CA was at the forefront of charter schools back in the 70's. They would probably fight it tooth and nail today (teachers unions didn't have the weight back then), but both sides want it. The only ones going to public schools are the illegals, hispanics and blacks. Or, the wine moms who want Jr. to know what a piece of shit he is. Although, there's definitely enclaves where this isn't an issue - the same ones you want to go to if you have to have an ER visit. But from what I've been reading lately, even places like Palo Alto high are not places to be after dark.

You left out that they, like most of those in the younger generations, believe they're entitled to a decent-paying, indoor, no-hard-work job with practically no hard performance requirements.

When they are first hired, rookie teachers with the above mindset discover that teaching is not a cushy no-work job, not if they try to do the job to the satisfaction of parents and taxpayers.

So they find relief by not teaching for real, instead simply preaching the CRT and Amerikkka Is Evil crap from canned lesson plans from companies like the one run by Garland's son-in-law. Woke principals and administrators encourage this BS, or at least do not discourage it. IMHO.

||Police in the small town of Reform, Ala., near Tuscaloosa, attempted to stop Foster's vehicle on Friday for reported speeding. Police say he led them on a chase and deployed spike strips to stop the vehicle, which caused him to crash. Police then arrested Foster and took him to the county jail.

Reform Police Chief Richard Black told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that he became concerned Foster Jr. was behaving erratically. He says he spoke with Foster Jr.'s parents, who told him the former Saints player had bipolar disorder and may have been experiencing a manic episode. Foster's parents and Black made arrangements to bail him out of jail on the condition he go to a hospital for evaluation.

But on Sunday, when Foster's parents and Black arrived at the county jail, they were told Foster wouldn't be released to them because he had been re-booked on additional counts, including assault, and was being held without bail.||

The district had offered them a contract that was (I can't recall the exact figure) within one or two percent of what the union demanded. Then president, Wayne Johnson, suddenly looked like he wasn't going to be an instant media star, and called the strike anyway.
I said, "Fuck him, and all his sheep", and crossed the picket line every day just to spite them. And, of course, I got some heat for it. But I held my ground, and didn't care if I made enemies. The few who tried to get nasty with me found out it was a bad idea to do so. Wayne Johnson got himself a desk in Sacramento. The Teachers' union, and all their goons did not then, and to this day do not give a rat's ass about education. Fuck 'em.

245 In theory, the college freshman class I teach could be done entirely online. Indeed it was for about a year. However, it's VERY clear that students do want to come to class and learn with their fellow students. There's always about 10-15% that don't, but that choice is *theirs* not mine. They are free to attend or not attend class, but it's their loss when they don't learn much. I may procrastinate when it comes to preparing for class, but I am ALWAYS prepared and ready to go when it's time. I can't abide lazy professors or teachers...
Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at December 08, 2021 06:31 PM (R945f)

I think by the end of high school, many kids have the discipline to learn their chosen profession without having to be there in person (when feasible). The socialization process is complete, and you've figured out you're going to play the game or not. This isn't possible for a 4th grader by any stretch.

Maybe the time is ripe for conservatives to stop bitching about the education system and instead enter into the field and drive out the inept, apathetic and sexually perverse liberal teachers that don't want to work.

My perception of teaching was of a Venn diagram of teaching the children, making their experience of coming to school so exciting that their absentee rate was nearly zero, having the parents thrilled that their child was so excited that they were overjoyed and willingly paid for both the private school and public schools.

The third circle of that Venn diagram? Some big fat liberal woman in charge and making her happy? Didn't happen. I bailed. The school failed within five years under her fat miserable tutelage. Did I mention she was fat and miserable and a liberal pos?

Agreed. My sister teaches 6th grade English. She says she and her fellow teachers spent as much time teaching students life skills (preparing for class, showing up on time, etc.) as they did teaching them the subject matter. A lot of students rose to the challenge and developed much better habits of personal responsibility. Not all of them, of course. I'm sure their parents played a role (on both sides).

Critical thinking is dead. It's almost surreal to talk to some college age kids, and some things that seem so obvious, so common sense are absolutely beyond them. And when explained (if it doesn't hurt their feelings or pronouns or whatever) it's like an epiphany for them. Truly frightening.

The last one that comes to mind (can't remember how it started) was a small group of kids not being able to comprehend how you can point a video camera at a monitor, and see "infinite" monitors/motion. I swear, all 21 year olds and you'd think I flicked a bic in front of a bunch 3rd century peasants.

But in the end, no matter how bad the schools get, no matter how bad the teachers are, my children's education is my responsibility. And these indignities, indignant though they may make us all, only serve to reinforce that.

One of the most fascinating things about our society (at least to me) is the technological barbarism. The American legacy of innovation has left us with an enormous inherited wealth of advanced technology at a time when the atrophied cultural life of the nation is causing more and more intellectual regression.

There are a million examples, but the whole post-modern subjective reality of "my truth" is one I like to point out. It is, with no differences, solipsism. A nearly prehistoric worldview that was left in the dust by the ancient Greeks. Practically caveman level thinking, from affluent University-educated people with iPhone 10s, spreading it across space-based telecom networks to the other benighted urban serfs.

This is a moment in time, and it will pass, but it sure is weird and interesting to watch it happening.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger

IN theory that's nice, but in practice impossible, because the real problem isn't the teachers, it's the corrupt school administrations that enable and promote bad teachers, because it suits their political goals.

Taking back school boards is a start, but I honestly think that none of this can be fixed until we destroy public education as an option in this country - it is too far corrupted to be fixed, it has to burned down and rebuilt.

I also think the same applies to many universities - maybe half of what we have now is worth keeping, but half of it needs to be burned to the ground. All of that is a *prerequisite* to any real reform.

Like all of the institutions. This "get involved" routine is a platitude.

In this case, with education, play it through: you get, say, fifty thousand conservatives, somehow, against all odds, through the filters. Stealthily. You have them in place.

At that point, they have a choice: they can follow the Marxist curricula provided them. Or, they can deviate, and they'll be fired or rubber-roomed.

The Gramscian march works in one direction. The people who pulled it off know how it's done, and won't let it be done to them in turn.

Ambitious left-wing parents want their kids to join the laptop class. If their kids get a shitty education, and they don't have any intersectionality points, that's not happening.

Also note that this is a big-city phenomenon. I live in a suburban Portland school district, and half the kids in my wealthy neighborhood are Asian, since the school district has a good reputation. If the local district tries to cut back to four days a week, the school board gets voted out, and they know it.

388 "Right. That's why I tire of the "you deserve it" crowd around here, because throwing my life's effort away at a futile gesture sounds like a dumb way to try to change the system. I'm building my own redoubt and going to try to hunker down at this point. There's no going back, only through.

I'm not even convinced there is something worth saving at this point, personally. The failure of our system to ward off leftist hijacking is too complete. I think armed conflict was baked into the cake in the late 60's, which was before I was even born.

This marxist shit has literally been a century long project.

392 Why would left-wing parents care? It's not as if actually getting a good education matters anymore? Or is it that they just want daycare?

They care only because a subset of kids staying home won't get the daily allowance of LBGT indoctrination.

Even the dumb-ass parents that don't value education, and just want a taxpayer-funded place to dump their kids, are going to walk away from CA public schools. Because, the schools won't even do that anymore.

Note that at the same time that the public school teachers are trying to get paid without working, they hate hate hate charter schools, and scheme to put an end to them. Talking points such as the charter schools are poaching the best students etc., they got a million of em, all crap. We had some bloated creature from the local school district attack our kid's charter school at a hearing because its demographics were not an exact statistical match for the entire county. Shameless.

Of course! The problem, as the Architect in the Matrix movies said, is choice. Denying us our freedom to make choices in favor of a government mandate turns us into slaves of the State. Forever after. There is *nothing* they will not be able to make us do if/when this is fully implemented.

Sometimes it is the administrators of the school (and often parents) who push 'mainstreaming' (a fancy term for pushing those with behavior issues who should be in separate classrooms into regular classrooms). The teachers have no say over that practice and try to cope as best they can. But it is patently unfair to the children that have to sit next to that problem child - or children.

That's why I referred to a Venn diagram of parent, child, and administration. A good teacher will hit the most important two out of three, but in the current climate never all three. It is not possible. At least not for me, for which I will never apologize.

406 I GOT RID OF HERPES WITH THE HELP OF DR DOUGRAY MEDICINE
I was diagnosed with Herpes early this year in 2021 and the doctor told me herpes has no cure. I kept searching for any possible cure. While searching, I came across lots of reviews on facebook about how doctor DOUGRAY used herbal medicine to cure different people from Herpes and other diseases. I made an order for the herpes cure eraser and I received it 5 days later, I took the medicine for 9 days as instructed. While taking the medicine, I noticed some changes in my body. I used the medicine during the outbreak and the outbreak stopped completely. all the itching and pain was gone completely. When I was done taking the herbal medicine, I went for a test and I was confirmed Herpes negative "totally cured". Before I made an order for herbal medicine, I promised Dr DOUGRAY that if his product actually worked for me I was going to share the testimony through all social media so lots of people can be aware that Herpes is curable. you can contact dr dougray via Email: drdougray@gmail.com
