John Sexton loses his usual good sense to bend over way to far in the interests of supposed fairness to a teacher who was caught repeatedly indoctrinating student in strident leftwing positions -- and who continued doing so, even after warned by the school board.

Sexton is trying to be "fair" to the teacher by urging "leeway" for teachers' free speech in the classroom -- but they have very little. They are not speaking in their private capacity as citizens -- they are speaking as paid employees of the government, and hence paid agents, indirectly, of the citizenry, to do a job we're telling them to do, and telling them how to do.

They are not at liberty to just teach "whatever the Muse tells them to teach each day."

And frankly: I don't have free speech in my fucking life outside my job. But teachers are to have near-absolute free speech in the performance of their 8 to 3 jobs -- government jobs! -- teaching our children!?

One of the top stories at the Washington Post today is this piece about a teacher named Matthew Hawn who was fired for teaching his class about “white privilege.” Actually, the argument here is really over whether or not Hawn was teaching the topic, i.e. offering it as one perspective, or just telling students to adopt his own progressive viewpoint on political issues. In the end, the school decided it was the latter and he was fired.
Regular readers will know I’m always hesitant whenever someone is getting fired over their political opinions. That’s a double-edged sword that, once endorsed, can do do damage to a lot of people. Even so, in this case I’m hard pressed not to see a teacher who had really abandoned any pretense of objectivity.
Hawn teaches a class on contemporary issues which is meant to discuss things that are happening now. After the shootings in Kenosha by Kyle Rittenhouse, Hawn pointed to Rittenhouse as an example of white privilege.

“My question to you, and this is going to be a tough one,” Hawn said to his class on Aug. 27, 2020, “is how is that not a definition of White privilege?”
Tired after a long day of hybrid teaching, Hawn accidentally uploaded the video to the folder for his personal finance students, where a parent spotted it. The parent immediately contacted Sullivan County administrators to complain.
That description doesn’t really do any justice to what Hawn actually said. The Post does include video of this statement which seems a lot more strident and misleading.

I’ll go ahead an say it. There’s no really arguing this or debating this. This is white privilege is what it looks like. That kid right there. Whenever you can fire into a crowd of people and kill people and then you can walk to the police without fear of being shot back, that is the definition of privilege, of white privilege. It’s awful. These aren’t isolated incidents. This has been happening to African-Americans for 400 years.

In January he assigned a Ta-Nehisi Coates essay to his class in which the author blames Trump’s election on racism. He was reprimanded and appealed the reprimand claiming he had planned to introduce other reading into the discussion. But ultimately the school board upheld the reprimand. Then, just a few weeks later Derek Chauvin was convicted for the murder of George Floyd and Hawn was asked what it would have meant if Chauvin had been acquitted. Instead of answering in his own words, Hawn pulled up a video clip about white privilege.
Hawn decided to let the poet Kyla Jenée Lacey speak. He clicked to YouTube.
Jones and several other students in the class later said they remember a group of White boys throwing up their hands in anger during the poem.
“The video is definitely very confrontational and doesn’t sugarcoat, the point of it is to be in-your-face-harsh,” said a White 18-year-old in the class, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of backlash from her conservative family. “I think that’s what really upset the boys.”
One of those boys complained to administrators, his classmates said. Within two weeks, Hawn was fired.
Again, you won’t really get a sense of what Hawn was promoting by reading the Post story. Here’s the video he apparently showed the class (contains some NSFW language):

Should he have been fired for assigning the Coates reading or showing the video clip? My own take is that teachers should be given a lot of leeway in class. But in this case it seems that Hawn wasn’t really presenting anything like a range of viewpoints to his students. It’s just one leftist diatribe after another with him directly telling students in some cases that there’s no discussion. Hawn himself, when he appealed his firing this summer seemed to belatedly acknowledge that how he taught the class wasn’t really appropriate.

Again, Sexton is offering what he feels is "fairness" here which is inappropriate.

I think people are very confused on this issue, so let me unconfuse people:

We have an individual right to speech, which is supposed to be absolute.

There is also something that can be called "collective speech." Collective speech is the speech we make together, as when we decide, collectively, to put up a statue in a public park.

Collective, "corporate speech" -- "corporate" in the sense that it's "of the collective body," of the corporate whole -- is by its nature politically shaped, subject to the editing and frankly censorship of the group.

Obviously, this is group speech and no individual has an absolute right to control its content, because how could one person have a veto right over the group?

Now I disagree with a city deciding to pull down a statue of Thomas Jefferson -- but I have no doubt that the city has the right to make that decision as part of its collective speech. They take a vote on it, they politically decide what their collective speech is.

Collective speech is rarely the best, most interesting, or truest speech, because, well, it's decided by a group of people which is made up of, let's face it, >50% idiots and >10% degenerates.

But still, it is what it is: A lot of public speech is collective speech, and collective speech, unlike individual speech, is subject to public monitoring and public editing and public censorship and public debate.

My -- your -- our -- individual speech isn't. Or shouldn't be, and didn't used to be.

But our collective speech has always been subject to pressure from the group and majority rules. (Or, as if often the case: rule by an animated and loud minority.)

Confusion over this critical distinction results in our applying the rules of collective speech to individual speech -- and insisting that the Group should have censorship and veto rights over individual speech -- while also insisting that collective speech, which is what teachers have when they show up for their government jobs to teach kids mandated by law to appear before them, have free speech rights to argue indirectly with the kids' conservative parents about what the HuffPo told them was on FoxNews last night.

(Anyone who watches Libs of Tik Tok knows this is what animate 99% of leftwing activists teachers -- they're angry about what they're leftwing "news sources" on Twitter like Jezebel and HuffPo and Daily Beast them "the right" is doing, and they're attempting to get revenge on their evil conservative parents of their imagination by going after their children and "converting" them. Some are pretty explicit in straight-up admitting this motive.)

What teachers are supposed to teach in class, and what they are allowed to teach in class, is collective speech, not individual speech.

Telemarketers do not have "free speech rights" when they're delivering the boss's pitch to potential customers on the phone.

These are not fucking college professors. They are not doing original research here, guys. I'm pretty sure that we've plumbed the full mysteries of the bowtie method.

And people aren't seeking them out of their own free volition. Kids are forced into these specific schools due to the happenstance of where they lived, and forced to attend classes taught by these teachers based on an automated classroom assignment system.

When kids are forced to be in a classroom, the teachers' rights to free speech diminish.

The kids' have rights too, don't they?

Weird how all that CRT training about "power dynamics" and "unearned privilege" goes right out the window when it's a leftwing teacher with control over a student's grades and therefore over his future earnings telling a student what he is required to believe.

These are our children, not theirs. We are now in the bizarre position where parents' control over their children is doubted and questioned and highly disputed by the state, whereas teachers' control is assumed.

This is not a free speech issue. They are being paid to say what we tell them to say in class.

We don't have free speech in our lives outside the classroom, but inside the classroom, where our children are mandated by law to be present, which we are compelled by law to fund with our taxes, they live in a bubble of nigh-absolute free speech?

This is madness. This is MADNESS.

Fire every single one of them and make them re-apply and re-interview for their jobs, and hire back about 40% of them. Open the hiring pool to non-holders of the crap Education degrees and get some quality non-activist Actual Teachers in there.

And end tenure -- forever. Pass a fucking constitutional amendment to kill it dead.

This doesn't go nearly too far enough.

Public education is irreparably broken. Just end. Close all the school districts. Every single one of them, across the country. Fire everyone, auction off the physical plant and close up shop. Replace the entire thing with a voucher equal to 80% of per-pupil spending in 2019 and subject every student to standardized testing in the primary subjects and make any private school that doesn't maintain an 80% pass rate ineligible to receive vouchers but otherwise have no restrictions or certification.

Will shit be chaotic for several years? Yeah. Will some people fall through the cracks? Yeah. Is that acceptable? Yeah. We'll figure it out. Public school systems are a failed model that cannot be repaired. Just end it.

The teachers meant, of course, so that *they* don't get into trouble.

And yes, they should be in jail. Children held in thrall to adults who make arbitrary medical decisions on their behalf with the consent of neither the child nor the child's legal guardians (that is, the child's parents) are behaving in a manner distinguishable only in effect - though not in basic philosophy - from Mengle or the butchers at Unit 731. I am not being hyperbolic and I do not think it is an unfair comparison. Those people were monsters and so are these people. The only difference is one of severity rather than basic motivation.

Hard to tell with such a massive misinformation psy/op what is true, but I've seen medical docs saying that strokes in 8 year old kids aren't unusual. I'm sure heart attacks in 11 year olds is something we've only just noticed and has been happening for hundreds of years.

So much BS from both sides I hate it - and hate having to sit on the sidelines watching. What does seem apparent is they've "tailored" the drug for kids, whatever the hell that means. And it doesn't sound good. What ever happened to an immune system?

I saw a list of what is common to vaccinate kids with these days, and I had no idea. At all. Me? Polio. That was it. I never caught any childhood diseases, but all my friends certainly did. Now they're given drugs for things I've never even heard of.

Because, as a commenter pointed out on another thread yesterday, Ace, there are no physical consequences for doing these things. Look at the 'pizza shot' story - rather than charging into the school and turning the nurse, the principal and superintendent into statistics, the mother more or less excuses the school, shrugging her shoulders and whining that she should have been given the right to refuse.

If the DoJ is going to label parents as domestic terrorists, then perhaps it's time to embrace the label in all of its ramifications.

The schools forcibly medicate kids. The Vax is just the most recent round, but they've been doing it for years in the name of "ADHD" - albeit they used to do it by strong-arming parents into consenting to it rather than just bypassing them. The schools groom kids into sexual depravity. The schools corrupt kids as a matter course. The schools fail to teach kids skills *or* knowledge.

And they do it at all constantly accelerating real financial costs that still managed to be dwarfed by the cultural and moral costs of what they do.

The schools must be dismantled. Lots of people belong in prison, but even if not a single person goes to jail, the schools must be ended.

I cannot and will not cart my kid thirty miles one way to that freak show every fucking day. I can't afford it either. Home school you say? My daughter is in honors geometry and chemistry, she is also able to take dual credit classes. That means advanced enough to get college credit for the class. Our little county school isn't infested with woke shitheads. The teachers live in the small town where they work and they deal with parents when they go to church or shopping or anything really.

Where the government is involved, the marketplace is not. Period. Not in ideas, not in goods, not in money, not in any respect. Where the government operates, coercion rules, not debate and certainly not merit.

Sexton clearly needs to remember the simple axiom that everything the government does necessarily reduces liberty and thus to maximize liberty government must be minimized.

Schools are ideal place to make some gains in minimization.

A bit harsh my good man. One of my kidlets is in a public school and it's a hell of a good one. I keep tabs on what The teachers provide their curriculum online for one and all to see. And like all education, parental involvement is key. I ask the kidlet what did you do today, what did you learn, what are you reading, etc.

I also live in a county where there would literally be buildings burned to the ground if anyone's kids were vaccinated against their will.

This isn't a public education issue. This is a public education IN LOS ANGELES issue. And yes I agree, if you send your kid to a govt school there, or SF or Seattle you are a shitty parent.

In my neck of the woods, one of the "popular" private elementary schools is $70k/yr, and that was last time I checked maybe 8+ years ago. If there's one thing CA has done right, it's champion charter schools. Doubt that would happen these days, but it's too late and people love them. Oddly enough, the Christian schools have a huge waiting list because most people can't afford private schools or as mentioned - get them to and from. My old Pastor started a school, it got so popular he actually moved it to a public school that had closed. My ex taught art there every Thursday - the education is far more rounded than public - what with art, music and PE. Those things have been largely done away with here - until H.S.

I pulled my daughter out of school, including a toe to toe moment with their stupid ass principal, because storms where coming and they wanted to "shelter in place" instead of release the kids to their parents.

I can't list to you the amount of shit I heard, for the next couple years, because I was the guy that told Principal So and So to go fuck himself, call a cop, or stop me if he thought he had the sack to make it stick - from all the typical local people that were oh so respectful of how things worked. Got invited to church a few times - because I had "issues".

My issue was that a tornado was brewing, and my kid wasn't going to huddle next to to the other kids at the tilt wall public building, when I had a basement.

211 Another big problem is the credentialing. You need an ed degree or teaching certification which is equivalent to an ed degree. You can be smart and good and want to do some teaching. Maybe for a few years, maybe intermittently, whatever - but you will be barred from doing so.

Credentialing is a stupid practice for education because - as Norm MacDonald put it - to teach 8th grade you really only need a 9th grade education. Yet the credentialing system blocks out anyone who might be interested but doesn't want to do bunch of useless credential pursuits for a second (or secondary) job, and also *limits* your talent pool to people with the credential.

And education majors are typically the stupidest and laziest students on campus. The programs are a twisted joke, and the joke compounds and feeds on itself.

Even if we keep public schools, ending teacher credentialing would go a long way.

My teacher didn't require it, but the teacher of the other section had everyone bring in a "current news story" from the newspaper every week, to be discussed on Friday. Yours truly, age 14, struggling with algebra and Spanish, was perfectly glad not to have any more requirements on his time. But I wonder to this day what kind of discussions went on in that section.

Great movie for its time. One of my favorites to quote. But I don't think it holds up well for younger generations to get. My kids (now 18 and 22) enjoyed a lot of movies from my youth that I made them watch. Back to the Future, Ferris Beuhler, Breakfast Club to name a few. They didn't really get Fast Times -- although they did appreciate young Ms Cates.

I'm pretty sure the flu can. The common cold doesn't that I'm aware of, but I believe there are rhinovirus (-virii?) that are related to that cold that can and do.

Death wise? No more than regular cold and flu deaths. 200 or so a year IIRC, and all of them poor kids with major health problems and feeding tubes.

They need to be told often about what they're going to encounter in the classroom, and make them aware of it. Give them the tools to not fall prey to any of the garbage being churned out. People are already doing things about it. The VA election turned on this issue and the new AG is even more active in this area than the new governor. There are groups like this springing up across the country. I expect it will be a big issue in the election next fall.

I wasn't expecting much, but I ended up laughing a whole lot more than I thought I would. To say it's quirky is an understatement, it starts off being a faux documentary, and then it gets more and more nuts each scene. The other thing is to join at least one social media site, even though you may despise them, this is only so you can post on their social media pages.

You'd be surprised how effective this is when their FB page etc. is filled up with articles about the teacher. This even works for companies too.
You can also post on the MSM websites and ask them why they're not covering the story and then link to it.

Don't go around telling people "kids don't get sick." They absolutely can and will. People *will* label you a liar (not me, because yeah, I understand what you're trying to say) because people are going to say you're claiming kids don't get sick at all.

That doesn't help the cause of trying to calm people the fuck down about kids getting sick.

As far as the OTHER point. I suspect that kids are way more likely to have heart issues from the vaccine than the virus itself which is why mine aren't getting the shots, well, on top of the fact that they've had the disease and so their immune systems are able to react better to it if they run into it again.

474 Fire them all. Okay, fine. There's a lot of crap teachers out there. I work with some of them. Some of them appear to despise kids and get offended when 14-year-olds act like 14-year-olds (not getting offended by my students is what allows me to manage and sometimes even educate them).

Good luck replacing them with anyone, much less people who are qualified in the content, able to manage a classroom, handle kids with complex trauma, horrifying behavior, and unwillingness to learn...and are willing to accept the pay. I love being a teacher, but it's not a career people are clawing to get into.

Just saying...you fire half the teachers, you won't find replacements, and public schools will get even worse. Once class sizes get above the mid-30s you end up doing more managing behaviors than actually teaching. I work for a pretty well managed district and we still struggle to fill positions. And forget substitutes. You can't pay those people enough.

Part of the solution is rethinking public education, which includes options for dealing with students (and families) who are there to do little more than create problems and disrupt learning.
