Elon Musk recently suggested that anyone over 70 years old should be barred from running for political office. In a tweet on Thursday, the SpaceX and Tesla founder said: "Let's set an age limit after which you can't run for political office, perhaps a number just below 70." While no specific lawmaker was mentioned in the tweet, the current president, Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump are both over the age of 70. And Senator Bernie Sanders, who Musk has previously squabbled with, is 80 years old.The answer isn't an age limit, it is Term Limits. She fought the Cookie Police. And lost. The cookie story is sad and totally believable. I used to buy butter and occasionally raw milk from an Amish store in a town up north from here. The state came in and shut them down, for not having all the sciencey stuff and state approvals. So now, I do like everyone else and go to the guy's house to buy butter and occasionally raw milk. I used to be anti term limits on the principle that the voters shouldn't have choices taken away from them and that they could always just stop voting for someone when they were tired of him. That principle still seems right to me but I have to admit that it just doesn't work out that way in real life. The advantages of incumbency are just too great for someone who is willing to take advantage of them. Term limits are an acceptable price to level the field.

Usually it ends up costing more. Otherwise there wouldn't be a market for "contractors."
The Federal government doesn't hire contractors directly, they do it through "contracting companies". Technically, the contractor works for the "contracting company", not the Feds, which is why they don't count against the hiring limit. I'm sure there is no graft in hiring contracting companies. OTOH, you can actually get rid of contractors, as opposed to Federal workers, who are basically unfirable once they have completed their one-year probationary period. "A citizen may kill an elected politician if they believe said politician is doing something not in the person's best interest." Talk of a planetary wide income tax is an automatic death sentence. Just a quick thought.
If gov. officials did not have qualified immunity, they would think twice and never allow "safe" drug use sites. They would be too concerned about their asses being sued for contributing to the death of so many people who use drugs at these "safe" sites. This seems obvious to me, but think about that - If there were consequences for their actions, I am sure they would be different. They do this shit because they are above the law. Biden administration expected to announce a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics, CNN reports
The Biden administration is set to announce this week that US government officials will not attend the 2022 Beijing Olympics, according to CNN. President Joe Biden said in November that they were "considering" a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing 2022 Olympics over China's human rights records. The move would keep US officials from the Games, but not the athletes. In a press conference, Press Secretary Jen Psaki added that the US has "serious concerns" about alleged human rights abuses in China. OT. Yet another explosion at an Iranian nuke site.
Physics is now the least sought after major at Tehran U. Next is Electrical Engineering aka suicide vest builders. And we've stopped talking to the Iranians - even the Biden Administration has figured out the the Iranians are just stalling while they put the finishing touches on their nuke. The Israelis are now openly suggesting that the US hit Iran militarily - after all, Brandon has said that "Iran will never get a nuclear weapon on my watch". The Israelis know that's not going to happen, so they are readying their own strike plans. Posted by: Legally Sufficient, Believing in America at December 05, 2021 10:08 PM I don't think either age or term limits are needed. Just make it such that anyone who runs for, or is elected to, political office is barred from increasing their personal wealth during that time. In addition, they and everyone in their family will have to provide their tax returns to the public every year. Also, get rid of lifetime benefits from elected positions. These are supposed to be civil servant positions. Yet they have it setup where they get paid by the taxpayer for life just for winning an election. No healthcare, no retirement fund. Everyone simply gets a salary for the years in office and that's it. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 05, 2021 11:04 PM (Do5/p) 301

Also, get rid of lifetime benefits from elected positions. These are supposed to be civil servant positions. Yet they have it setup where they get paid by the taxpayer for life just for winning an election. No healthcare, no retirement fund. Everyone simply gets a salary for the years in office and that's it.
Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 05, 2021 11:04 PM Also, make it such that every elected official has to abide by the same policies as everyone else (i.e. Obamacare, kids have to go to public schools, etc.). Or setup something like what Bill Ford, Jr, did when Ford Motor Company went through their bankruptcy in 2002 or so. He went without a salary and only had shares in the company stock. So he would only make money if the company did well. Same goes for elected officials. Set it up such that if the economy is not meeting certain targets, they don't earn their salary. I must thank the Horde. I made a prayer request for a decent night's sleep and it worked! Mostly.
I slept largely without interruption either from my shoulder pain or unwanted massive throbbing hard-ons but unfortunately I had a rather vivid dream about the most beautiful woman I ever met. How is that unfortunate? Because in my dream she spent the entire time ripping out my heart, stomping on it and grinding it right into the ground. It was brutal. I don't think I've ever been defenestrated in a dream before. So I'd kind of like a do over. So, if you'll pray with me again... Dear LAWD! I pray for one night of decent, mostly uninterrupted sleep free from pain, massive throbbing hard-ons or dreams of the most beautiful woman in your fair creation. Instead, for a few hours, let me embrace the sweet, cold embrace of blackest oblivion. In JAY-ZUS name we pray, Amen! Awoman! Agenderfluiddragonkin! Caesar, not what I was talking about. Basically just a very crude measure - when enacted, where have term limits altered the trajectory of a state or other jurisdiction? As I said, lots of wheels turning here, so hard to isolate the impact of different factors. I was just unaware of any place that term limits had had their clearly desired effect. Voters can impose term limits any time they wish. They don't - disastrously, as we're seeing.
Bozo offered OH as an example. He may be right. But not gonna yank the taffee over this very much. Just was pointing out my own, possibly erroneous or dated, impression about term limits. And the SB 5 thing in OH points us back to the problem - the voters. In CA, Ahnuld went through something similar. Initial effort to do good important stuff failed - because voters wouldn't step up - and he was a disaster thereafter. Posted by: rhomboid at December 05, 2021 11:15 PM (OTzUX) 340

Very difficult to believe the tariffs won't be eroded, and there are various ways. Exemptions and other procedural moves can gut them without formal removal. Given the huge economic damage done by the administration's policies and body English even with the tariffs in place, there might be some horse-holder at the CEA or elsewhere who's warned that reversing the tariff accomplishments might bring noticeable additional pain. Though how one can see any political risk in such disasters, after 2020, is beyond me.

In an interesting study I looked at the average span of terms for Senators and Congressman from the founding to about 2018. It's hard to believe but between 1789 and the 1880s the average length of service for a Senator was only 4 years. Yep, most of them never made it to the six years. After 1880 to about 1950 the length of service averaged 8 years then around 1952 it started steadily increasing to about 16 to 18 years of service.

Posted by: Braenyard Yeah, my upstairs neighbor is an ex-NY'er/boomer - he was at Woodstock. He's liberal but in at least in terms of local governance (quality of life stuff that really matters), he's somewhat conservative. He told me flat out that if there are no Dems he likes in an election, he simply won't vote (rather than vote R, not that it matters anymore in SF). Then he rails against the guys like Chesa Boudin who win. Posted by: SFGoth at December 05, 2021 11:34 PM (KAi1n) 397

Posted by: Braenyard Worse, they will cast an absentee ballot in your name. That is one of the dirty secrets from 2020, the Dems enabled by real time voting history data, essentially 'knew' which voters were unlikely to actually vote so they voted for them. In some cases, those voter registrations were 'floaters' who had no existence in reality but got ballots mailed to them. Those are the addresses where sometime dozens, even hundreds were mailed to. Because it circulates all the time and most kids wind up getting it very young, since the circulation pattern suggests roughly a four year rotation. That's right -- by the time you're eight you've lived through two rotations through the population of this, and the other three, circulating Coronaviruses. Caesar got his start as a Marian. Gauis Marius was a threat in a sense to the old Roman republic but...not really in an ideological sense. He was incredibly popular and was elected to the office of consul 7 times which was...bad form. He also was willing to relax rules around citizenship that the rest of the Roman elite were dubious about. But...they'd done all the before earlier with the Latins and other groups anyway. When Caesar came into his own he wanted to be the top dog in Rome - but the opportunity for him to become dictator wasn't an ideological quest - it was, like Marius before him, the result of a very talented and ambitious man hitting the limits of how far you could go in Rome. Augustus then later subverted the Republic to become dictator himself, but by that point the Republic was done anyway. Posted by: 18-1 at December 06, 2021 12:55 AM (ESjRY) 562

I like the pattern of some greek city states.
Government positions, you were drafted. So, like Jury Duty, your number comes up to head the Water Works or whatever. By most accounts this was a good system. They also had the Death Penalty as punishment for malfeasance in office. We're in that awkward stage where all the old systems are in place, but many of the officeholders are just pod people and grifters looting the Treasury and letting the enemy through the gates. Without sound money, and a certain frugality of spending, it always turns out that way I expect. Posted by: Common Tater at December 06, 2021 12:56 AM (g1guD) 566

I had all the classic symptoms without losing my ability to taste and smell. In my case, I also had blood pressure spikes for weeks and developed a secondary infection of bronchitis which often happens when I get respiratory infections anyway. My wife had a milder case.
However, due to pre existing autoimmune issues, I had to continue taking certain drugs that reduced inflammatory response anyway plus I was already taking Vitamin D and Quercetin for those problems. Nobody had the coursge to explain that nobody can stop a virus, not even governments.
Over half the population say, were going to get exposed to the virus, sooner or later. The idea with "2 weeks to flatten the curve" was to prevent a huge slug of people coming down with it at the same time. Maybe 40 percent or so would actually contract it. Again, no way around it. But then all the Karens and assorted nutbars somehow got the notion that they had to prevent exposure for the rest of their life and started microwaving their mail and spraying lysol on their groceries, and living in their basement till a vaccine was developed. Only then could we get back to "normal". They believed, and maybe still believe, that actually contracting the Chicom flu is an automatic death sentence. It don't even come with a tig torch, or regulator, and it can't do aluminum. The other thing is it has no pedal control for the tig. There are machines out there that come with all the goodies for not a whole lot more, so you gotta weigh the price of those compared to the yes with then having to by all the stuff. 625, Due to being a sherpa to two elderly relatives through the medical go around for the last three months, I have lost a lot of respect for the medical system as none of them seem to have a systems perspective and I have seen both get malpractice. In one case, no administration of a vital heart regulatory drug for three days because cardiology did not talk with the pharmacy. That pharmacy did not stock the name brand drug but did not tell the doc that they did not dispense that medication. Relative went into afib as a result just as we were getting ready to leave hospital. This one also had an earlier botched surgery at that hospital that had to be fixed on this second visit.

I was on their site and with the discounts its only $352, and I looked up the prices of their tig torch, and that was only $50, so that puts you at $400 with the torch, and I think the regulator was under $40, so I guess it's still cheap enough.
