Looks like spring lottery time on the Tanana River in Alaska.
The organizers build a wooden tower on the ice. People buy tickets picking the exact moment when the ice breaks up enough for the tower to start to fall or move downriver. Official time is determined by when a trip wire halts the clock. Closest to the exact time wins the pot. Posted by: Muldoon at December 06, 2021 09:36 AM (m45I2) 22

I rowed crew in college in Connecticut. We rowed off floating docks but the city wouldn't put them in until it was sure no more ice was coming down the river, so for the first couple weeks in teh spring we'd have to wade into the river to launch. This is darker than many of the artist's landscapes but it sure captures the moist chill of the first breaking of spring weather. I prefer his pieces with more light so that the details of plants and buildings stand out.
I am impressed by how Savrasov achieves the look of the slushy ice in the lower right foreground reflecting the early dawn light. I'm not saying I would hang this in the house but it is an effective painting. Posted by: JTB at December 06, 2021 09:44 AM (7EjX1) 44

Military Officers: To Combat 'Disinformation,' The Government And Its Big Tech Buddies Should Tell You What To Think
Politicization of the military is the greatest long-term danger to our country. An article by military officers recommending censorship shows this nonpartisan culture is at risk. Four military officers who describe themselves as "researchers" at the Army's highly respected Cyber Institute have published an article that adds to the growing concern about the ongoing politicization of the military. Published by the military's National Defense University (NDU), their article purports to analyze the dangers of misinformation and disinformation and to advise the Biden administration about how to counter it. The article's authors all are military officers and at least two are professors at West Point. They say their article "is written in response to the Capitol insurrection." Politicization of the military is the greatest long-term danger to our country.
----------------- This is a good reason for a small military. There is a case for a small standing army - smaller army less politicization. An army that is not fighting isn't doing much. A navy can (and should) have a constant mission. To keep the seas clear. Our country can mobilize quickly in a time of war when needed. We have proven that. To help China become ascendant of course! ----------------- Yes, yes ... of course. Jokes aside. Now is an opportunity to shrink the military along with all other aspects of government. Or at least start making the case so that when we have power we can. Let's be honest, the military is in many ways like the education system. Too many managers, directors, administrators, program officers at the expense of good teachers and good soldiers. Shrink it all. We aren't going to stop Russia from reclaiming Ukraine or China from taking Taiwan. We can't even stop an invasion of our own border. Its time to put the guard back into the hands of the state governors who can do with them what they will. Make them more accountable for the use or non-use of force. For over 200 years, the British never allowed any large military units to be based on their home soil, after their experience with Cromwell. So, I didn't have Kung Flu or strep throat. What I do have is bronchitis. Now I'm on a 5-day course of Azithromycin, as well as Mucinex and Zyrtec to break up my cough and seal up my runny nose. Start with the hard fact that the instant you accept that it has to be broken up, everyone on Medicare and social security loses it. There's no way to dissolve the federal structure but keep the federal benefits.
Fedgov sells off all the lands they've claimed that isn't National parks. There are hundreds of millions of acrese they have claimed. They can cover those currently on SS & Medicare and transition everyone to state control. Posted by: rickb223 at December 06, 2021 11:15 AM (uXonU) 274
Medicare and SS could still be funded by both countries. This is the type of thing that is negotiated. Remember all the doom and gloom predicted by the left on Brexit?none of it happened.
It wouldnt happen overnight. It would take a years to negotiate it all and then probably a few more years to implement. And all things like Medicare , ss, debt, military would be part of that negotiation. Posted by: Joe XiDen - I miss the Delta Variant at December 06, 2021 11:15 AM (ebCLN) 275
The National Debt issues alone will make a divorce extremely difficult. Are the successor states each going to take a proportional share of the Debt? How is that going to work where only 1 of the successor states will retain the world's reserve currency (allowing them to print to pay the debt?).
If the successor states repudiate the National Debt, their credit is ruined and the entire world is thrust into a global financial calamity. It's fun to fantasize, but there won't be a mutually-agreed breakup of the U.S. Posted by: Revenant at December 06, 2021 11:15 AM (I76dP) 276
They attribute this to "donor fatigue", and my favorite, no shit, claim "experts say this is normal."
LOL!! I'm not going to bother reading the article with bullshit like that in the headline. Posted by: Common Tater at December 06, 2021 11:14 AM (NUalg) Look, Fat, everyone knows that the Salvation Army sees its donations completely dry up every year right around Kwanzaa time. Read a book! Come on, man! Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 06, 2021 11:16 AM (6FeV1) 277
Just remember, in any "break up" they would still keep trying to take over "our" portion.
So, no. Posted by: Brother Tim Once we are a sovereign nation, we can treat them like a military invasion and kill them. Posted by: rickb223 at December 06, 2021 11:16 AM (uXonU) Posted by: JackStraw at December 06, 2021 11:16 AM (ZLI7S) 279

--------------- Peaceful breakups are extremely rare. Still, its a good discussion to have because it will prompt other discussions. Its at least some indication that there is something fundamentally wrong. Posted by: SH (Overturn Roe) at December 06, 2021 11:17 AM (sX1BW) 281

One thing I would do for our USA is a strict immigration law, including from USA2. Once you choose sides, no going back for at least 25 years. You can come visit but ya cant live here.

Posted by: rickb223 Provided they aren't already embedded in the government and bureaucracies in "our" territory. Want to place bets on that? Posted by: Brother Tim has nothing much to say, lately at December 06, 2021 11:18 AM (OUMaO) 284
How about we just win and keep everything instead.
-------------------- This is my preference. I am willing to grant them San Francisco though. It is too far gone, and we can just keep the city under siege until it is time to re-annex it. Posted by: SH (Overturn Roe) at December 06, 2021 11:19 AM (sX1BW) 285
I think a split could work. I do know we cant keep going the way things are for much longer.

Trump was right to start talking expansion. Start with Greenland, but then we should start talking to parts of Canada.

Posted by: SH (Overturn Roe) at December 06, 2021 11:20 AM (sX1BW) I'm sure entire provinces would seriously consider jumping ship if we had even a half decent ship of our own for them to jump into. Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 06, 2021 11:21 AM (6FeV1) 288
Sigh. If we keep up with adolescent statements of wonderment like "amazeballs" and "awesomesauce," then I am going to start injecting "cool beans" into the threads.

Mrs D had me pull out the old family hubcaps. Baby moons from a '64 Nova. An old family tradition of hers you see, to serve eggs benedict on them.
