Sadly, Casper has crossed the rainbow bridge. He was 16 and had various health issues, including a bad heart. His little heart finally gave out. - No nic provided

This is Buster our newest addition to Shep's. He's a 10 year old Schnauzer Mini Pincher mix. Mostly Schnauzer. Surrendered by owner because she had to go into a nursing home. He's a very confused little guy right now but he's still very lovable and loves attention. He has a slight heart murmur and arthritis and is partially blind. We are all in love with him. - Jewells

Buster is one lucky dog in a sad situation. It's nice to see him land in your care Jewells.

This is my husband's nephew's latest parrot. I don't know a lot about him, except his name is Mango and he's about two years old. The macaws don't mind him but the cockatoos don't like him (which is no surprise). I post as Notsothoreau.

Attached is the last picture of all three of our girls together. Amber passed a bit over a month ago, she is the Rhodesian Ridge Back in the Photo along with Maggy below her. Molly is on the left and has been on the pet thread when she was a puppy. When we moved to Texas our BIL/SIL kept our dogs for over three months when we were looking for a house. Our BIL had a stroke and had problems remembering the dogs names so we came up with color coded names. Amber was Red Dog One, Maggy was Yellow Dog Two and when we got Molly she was dubbed Black Dog three. It worked and he had no issues after that. Red Dog One is missed by all. - No nic provided

Hi. This is Tucker Carlson. Tucker for short. This is the look I get when he realizes we have a new couch and he’s not allowed on it. Look at those eyes. I really wish dogs could talk, because I’m sure I’m getting thoroughly cussed out right now. Aside from his foul language, Tucker is the sweetest and most loving dog I’ve ever known. Tucker is a good looking pooch. From personal experience you can teach a dog what can be a doggeh couch and not. We have a couch they aren't allowed on and a couch which they can use. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your pup.

Dottie and Tucker have been on the thread before, but Feryja has not. She’s the 40 pound three month old St. Bernard on the end of the couch. She’s our daughters new puppy. Super soft and lovely and she’s going to be as big as a tank. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Don’t despair, for evil never wins. Dogs rule. Cats drool and beer is good. He was almost 15 & he rescued us 12 years ago.
He was the best best friend a boy could hope for & he will be missed terribly.

My rescue - abandoned and picked up - rat terrier is not a brilliant dog, but he is street-smart and it takes him a bit to build trust. I bled a lot when we got him, but he's a sweetheart now, and plays well with the other three.

14 Rayray is a bit off his feed this morning. It is always worrying when an older dog is feeling under the weather. We don't know how old he is, but he's probably about 14 or so, he probably has liver cancer (no point in testing, I think) and he is certainly deaf and nearly blind. Usually he is a happy dude, so I'm concerned, but if it's his time, it is.

Rayray is so even tempered, and is perfectly happy to let me trim his nails, bathe him, etc., but the one thing he truly hates is going to the vet, so we won't do that any more. A dude needs his dignity, after all.

17 Amber was our dog. She had a stroke one night and was paralyzed and couldn't use her back legs, took her to the vet but there was nothing they could do, we had to let her go that day. We got her from a rescue when she was 1, she would have been 14 in a few months.

18 Update on Elvis, aka the fury Rosa Parks.

As some of you might remember he inadvertently became the face of the no leash law at the parks fight here in my town. He won a unanimous victory at the town council last week. Dogs are now free to run and play save for a few hours a day when leashes are required.

Almost as cool, my sister got a message this morning on her facebook page from a woman who lived across the street from my grandparents in NY when we were 5 - 6. We stayed with my grandparents for a few months when we moved back to town and my folks were looking for a house. My sister and this woman were inseparable for the time we lived there.

She saw Elvis' picture and my name in our local paper and contacted my sister because as it turns out she now also lives in my small town! How's that for a small world?

19 This is our first holiday season with a dog after many pet-less years. Luna had an awesome Thanksgiving with son and his family--fawned over, petted, and she destroyed a toy they brought her with an hour. Yesterday got to woof with kids and dogs in neighbors' yards. Today she's apparently taking a total day off, not even interested in the Christmas tree that's been brought downstairs.

22 I was very lucky to find someone to adopt my mom's dog when I moved her to semi assisted living complex. It was the owner of the dog sitting / walking / boarding business that I used when my mom was in the hospital. She knew it was a possibility that I was going to have to find someone if my mom didn't recover enough and offered to help me find someone. When the time came after taking care of him for a month she just volunteered to adopt him. That was a huge burden off my shoulders and I showed my appreciation with my check book.

Sorry to hear that, one of my aunt's dogs is probably going to have to be helped along this coming week. She is a small mixed breed and has had a couple issues for years, but her back end has stopped working on her and she can't move around any more.

Pets are wonderful and they make our lives better. Sorry to all who have lost one.

We got another new one last Wednesday a chihuahua. Baby, the husky mix that got returned by my friend has been adopted again and I think this will be a better fit for her.

Jewels. We inherited my FIL's Sheltie in August. He adapted well.

Maybe a little too well. He has latched on to golflady. Even had to get a thundershirt for when she's gone for any time.

My cousin got an aquarium after his dog died. He's on dialysis and the kidney transplant list, so can't have another pup now.

I keep telling him he needs to write a book on this. He's had exploding fish, others dead from illness and birth of some mollies. It can be fun but is one of those hobbies that can take over. He's got three small tanks now.

60 So...decades ago my ex MIL would come for Thanksgiving, and she would take the giblets from the Turkey, simmer them, and dice them for a treat for our three cats and little dog. This year I cooked a big Turkey, and son was here, so I sentimentally did the same thing for my cats, reminding my son that his gramma did the same thing.

And not one of those five little s---s would even touch these lovingly cooked and diced organ meats. I couldn't believe it. I had to throw them out. I guess cats are too spoiled these days, like kids are. Geez.

No matter where they were in the house, they'd dash into the room and leap into the center of the bed after I'd attached only one corner of the bottom fitted sheet!

Toucan do it too! (Just had to pun, there.)

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is coming along; not really better, but no worse. I refilled his Rxs today, the prednisone liquid he gets in the evening, and now gabapentin pills I need to crush and mix into his wet food 2x a day. (We're able to get the liquid down him, but I fear there would be no hope to add pills to what he considers torture.) He moves sort of like an elderly armadillo now, but purrs when we pet him and tries to spend some time with us every day. I guess this is just the way his twilight time will be.

65 We had Thanksgiving dinner at Daughter and SiL's house; SonM and cousinS as well as Milady and me. AAAnnd the two dogs SiL had since before they met, aaannd the two cats, first featured here a year ago last September when they were newfound kittens - someone dubbed them the two-headed kitty. They have grown up to be pretty big. They still snuggle like when they were kittens, but not so much.

Our own two cats don't cuddle with each other at all. While we were feasting, they were locked all belonely in the house. Couldn't take them with us - they don't play well with others.

Now that we have only two cats, you'd think there would finally be no competitive jousting for the two laps available. You'd be wrong.

68 Skywch. Heh. I think our dog ate the giblets last year after I simmered them and went "nope, don't want this in my gravy" This year I just threw them away along with the turkey neck. Last year I threw away like 3 necks I had been saving with "might make soup" and decided I do not need to freeze the necks for x years before throwing them away anymore.

69 Just a consideration for those facing a Rainbow Bridge situation. I had to put down my feisty Tucker Frenchton (Frenchie x Boston Terrier cross) far too soon, but I took him to the vet. The vet staff were very understanding and let us stay with him, but in an antiseptic stainless steel room. I swore never again would I do this.

I was able to find a vet that made euthanasia house calls, when the next two ancient pups were irreparably failing, they died in my arms after being given extra love and treats. It was a graceful way to leave us, and worth every penny to me.

Not always possible to do, I know, but I think it left both of us in a better place. And we have now done this for three other of my kid's family dogs.

Consider this as just a personal note, every situation is different.

I've had algae eaters that far preferred eating the fins of other fish to eating algae.
I've also had fish that liked jumping out of the tank.
But when things are good an aquarium is living art.

Algae encouraged in lower tank. Pump lifted filtered water from lower tank to upper tank. Returned to lower tank via automatic self regulating siphon of my design. Heavy load of fish, clear water and no tank cleaning for two years.

89 Sad about Howdy. It's always tough. One of the few cases were men are allowed to shed tears.

The cartoon at the start seems wrong for us. Sparky (featured here last week) fits in with the cats. Trying to teach him anything at all ends up with him hiding someplace I cannot reach. (He's only 10 lbs). Hoping to hire someone to get him to the basic commands.

Back in the early 60's my dad got a basenji from the guy who owned the liquor store - and was breeding them (Los Altos CA). My dad wasn't very kind to Flair, he really bought the wrong type of dog. But Flair was 100% dedicated to me, and watched me like a hawk (I was like 4-5). She used to scare people because she'd just stare, and people she didn't like the hackles on her back went straight up. Poor thing got hit by a car, and nearly killed by a German Shepperd. Back then, yellow streaks were common in GSD's (inbred post WW II) and the neighbors had a scary white one that would stalk kids. The dog got too close to me and Flair was not having any of that.

She hated my dad so much if he left any of his shit out, she'd tear it to pieces. Luckily, some family friends with a ranch wanted her, so she had the life she deserved. Very cat-like, she could jump a 6ft fence like nothing. Yodel and growl. Cool, but strange.

95 60 So...decades ago my ex MIL would come for Thanksgiving, and she would take the giblets from the Turkey, simmer them, and dice them for a treat for our three cats and little dog. This year I cooked a big Turkey, and son was here, so I sentimentally did the same thing for my cats, reminding my son that his gramma did the same thing.

And not one of those five little s---s would even touch these lovingly cooked and diced organ meats. I couldn't believe it. I had to throw them out. I guess cats are too spoiled these days, like kids are. Geez.

I loved that dog, I guess we were both misfits. But she was entirely the wrong fit - they are very similar to huskys and malamuts temperament wise. My dad would attempt to chain her in the back yard, and it would take her about 3 minutes to figure out any new system and escape. She was meant to have acres to run on, and she finally got it. I need to go through the photo books my mom didn't destroy and see if there's some photos of her. I used to say she wore black lipstick. That was the first time I realized dogs actually grin.

Our Rhodesian Ridge back took 400mg of gabapentin twice a day for arthritis pain. She was on that for over three years with zero side effects.

132 Gabapentin can be a very effective medication. It does need to be gradually tapered up to a therapeutic dose and then tapered back down when therapy is completed.

It should not be suddenly discontinued.

But. Talk with your vet. Or your doctor.

137 Huh Ratched. Toby is on gabapentin and carboprofen? for a sore paw. There was no tapering up of the gabapentin and the directions are just to give it 2x/day until the 30 pills are gone. Probably a small enough dose that tapering up and down was not needed.

The actual Field Dogs became nearly extinct, In the mid 50's a guy named Ned LeGrande set out to find, breed, and revitalize the last that were still out there. My family got involved in the early 70's after generations of competitive Pointers. I have raised, trained, and hunted them all across the country. From California to the carolinas, Texas to NY. My dogs have been run and worked on quail, pheasants, chuckar, Grouse, woodcock...My dogs contribution has mainly been that "Tail", I had a unique female that not only had the drive, nose, smarts and companionability...but also a straight high tail, and when bred she passed that trait on. Many of the top red dogs in the world now have my old dogs names in their pedigrees.

152 We have Carprofen for our senior dog. Vet gave it to us to give to the dog 2x a day when her arthritis acts up. When she starts limping she gets it. Usually 1-2 doses then she's good. It's been interesting to read all the comments about Gabapentin. It sounds like it's a stronger medication than Carprofen.

154 Neighbors came over for their dogs already. Lots of wiggles. Tux will be happy. He has Toby very well trained. He doesn't totally hide and neighbor's dogs don't chase him but he still mostly stayed downstairs while they were here.

They are pretty smart fish. They know people and watch the room. They like to watch you watching them. Its nice and restful to put on the colored lights and watch them swim back and forth.

158 He's got a Moluccan cockatoo. They're a pretty sizeable bird. He's got a heated outdoor aviary and an indoor one. Pretty sure he'll keep it apart from the others.

Look up NRSFTC, the line I used to breed with are "Celtics". I only have old "retired" dogs anymore, now just hunt, not compete. I think my days with pups are done.

I had one for yrs, from my teens till my 30s. was great fun esp to see the guppies or betas have younguns. You think people are nasty, those little fishes eat their own young if allowed.
I was so into it my teens I subscribed to 'Tropical Fish Hobbyist". Oh yes, I was a nerd.
