First-World Problems...

lopsided pecanpie.jpg

In retrospect I should have used my Speed Square, or at the very least marked out the correct angles with a knife before I cut the pie, but I was frantic, and the drool was getting out of hand.

Yet three days later I am left with a chaotic piece of pie that is embarrassing in its asymmetry. That is not to say that it didn't taste wonderful...the recipe calls for chopped pecans in the filling, which adds a wonderful texture and flavor!

Next year I will do better!

Thanks. I had been struggling on how to progress in the Catholic Church. Do I go into the Diaconate (like your brother), lay ministry, or what? When I was praying for discernment a couple months ago, I heard the voice of God clearly tell me what to do. So, I'm now a Postulant in the Lay Fraternity of St. Dominic.

One of the charisms of the Dominican Order is fighting heresy and there's a problem of heresy within the Church right now. I'm a pretty good writer and researcher, so I think that is what I'm being directed to do.

So this morning my wife starts off with a very detailed inventory of what leftovers remain in the fridge. Stuffing, ham, mashed potatoes, blah blah, I didn't think anything of it. Kind of weird though as it was very detailed. SHE NEVER SAID PIE!

It's like an M. Night Shyamalan movie about pie. She foreshadowed the twist at the end.

It needs to be dense, but still moist. The one thing I do not like about the NY style ones I have had: the crust seems to suffer and dwindles down to a dusting of crust on the exterior of the cheesecake. Like it was brushed on.

185 I've told before, but as a plebe at West Point, one of your duties at the dining hall was to cut the dessert for serving. Each table had 10 occupants, a mix from each class (Sr, Jr, yearlings and plebes). The dessert would be pies or cakes, brought to the table whole. The plebe would ask who desired a piece of dessert and would then cut the dessert into that many pieces, to be judged by the table commander on its equalness, with suitable punishment if not exactly even. That usually entailed you getting the smallest piece, but IIANM might have meant forfeiting your piece if the error was egregious. Most plebes kept a circular cardboard temolate in their hat which would be pre-marked for 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, etc. pieces, which when laid on top of the cake/pie would show where to cut for a given number of pieces. I usually used a little piece of bread to lay the template (centered on the cakpie) on to keep hair grease off the dessert!

They do a "rum/pecan" pie that's nasty. Why rum? Why so sweet? Why skimp on the nuts and so much filling? What's wrong with roasted pecans? It's not like we don't grow the things.

Sadly, some of the best pecan pie I've had (here) was baked by my evil morbidly obese ex SiL. (evil enough to be on the sidebar a couple of years back). Sadly, I wouldn't touch one if handed to me. Damn, I miss that stuff. When I was in GA last I wept having a slice of pecan pie.

And they make a great pecan pie, just loaded with pecans with just enough syrup/custard(?) to hold the whole thing together and stay moist. With a touch of bourbon, thank you very much. Perfect every time.

This Thanksgiving they decided to also make a Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie and it was great.

Having now eaten a regular Pecan pie and a BCpecan Pie, I now have an opinion. I prefer the regular. The BCpecan pie probably would be better with say, vanilla ice cream by itself, but it's just too rich after a Thanksgiving meal. Regular Pecan Pie is just right.*

My wife saw me put two metal pots in the microwave last night and remained calm after I hit 'start'. Our microwave has a 'Bake' setting that uses resistance heat to maintain a desired temperature. 200 degrees is a really nice temp to keep bowls and soup in prior to serving. Of course the soup drops 75 degrees due to wind chill factor just crossing the room to serve. Why does soup hate heat?

Hey, qdpsteve. I'm not sure I purchased the correct volume. I downloaded this version to my Kindle:

https://tinyurl.com/Tolkien-Beowulf

The way Christopher Tolkien starts the book it seems like I need to have a manuscript of Tolkien's translation sitting on my desk with this book, while I go line by line from one to the other, studying. Rather than just reading the translation with running commentary in footnotes.

Amazon's new-ish Ad selling program has rendered their Search totally useless.

Previously, if you entered even one word of a book title for example, Amazon search would take you directly to the book you wanted.

Now, even if you enter the complete title, you may be redirected to something like bath soap, and it takes multiple tries to get whatever you're looking for to show up.

I suppose this is a great opportunity for someone like Walmart, but their search is even more useless.
