I met a person in the hospital once who had an oral cancer -- and the odour was indescribably foul! Corpses in the later stages of decay do not smell as awful... (I would know!)
The nurses would literally hold their breath whilst caring for this person, in and out of the room, seconds at a time, often vomiting anyway... It was horrible!

Just upgraded to the newest Kindle Fire HD 10 Plus. A vast improvement to the old 8 I was using for the past three years. Eight-core processor vs. four, 4GB RAM vs. 2GB. Huge 10" 1080 screen vs. 800px. Black Friday sale for a hundred smackers.
Finally, the HQ main page no longer crashes. I was right, it was too big for 2GB. Very happy with this thing. Had to side-load Brave, since Fire OS doesn't allow the Google Play Store. Been researching a PC program called Fire Toolbox that will give me complete control over this device, too, and make it a "real" Android tablet. Not bad for a hundred bucks.

(1) On May 11, Fauci testified before a Senate Committee that "the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology."
(2) On October 20, NIH wrote they funded an experiment at the Wuhan lab testing if "spike proteins from naturally occurring bat coronaviruses circulating in China were capable of binding to the human ACE2 receptor in a mouse model." That is gain of function research.
(3) Fauci's statement and the NIH's October 20 letter cannot both be true. The statements are directly contradictory.
(4) 18 USC 1001 makes it felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison, to lie to Congress. _cont.

The Los Angeles School District set up a racial classification board (in the 1990's, I think), because so many teachers were claiming to be minority, to get the associated bennies. The board ruled on whether your claim to minority status was valid or not.

Clearly the Secretary of Transportation is completely ignorant on how barrels of oil are cracked into everything from bunker fuel to diesel to fertilizers to plastics. medicines, synthetic fibers, etc. Gasoline is a unavoidable waste product and has no other use than in motor vehicles.

To make this kit a TBF-1 will require seven modifications. The most obvious is the addition of the gun trough for the .50 to the right and front of the pilot. Second is naturally removal of the wing guns. The radio mast needs to be moved forward and angled towards the nose.
Rest of the modifications are further aft. Early TBF-1s had a clear fairing to blend the greenhouse canopy in with the turret. And finally we get to those windows in the lower fuselage. Again this is all early TBF-1 stuff, the TBF-1C has two oblong windows these need to be changed into smaller round windows. And finally the crew hatch on the right side has a small round window that was later deleted as shown in the kit.

Unless a person installs large arrays of solar panels on their home and business to generate power for their vehicles, there will be a dependence on the grid that is already collapsing under the weight of tens of millions of new people annually flooding into the country and plugging in, while at the same time, more and more dispatchable energy sources are being dismantled and replaced with unreliable/periodic energy sources.

My initial take on hypersonic weapons is, cool technology, but, the problem is course corrections. I want to know how one engineers the weapon to withstand the kind of course corrections needed when the target is moving to avoid the path of the incoming warhead.

Started reading Master Sniper, set in the late part of WW2, and chapter two has a lot to say about the StG-44, a really hot assault rifle. A couple of guys in London, one a yank, are in a joint weapons intelligence force, discussing a special shipment of these, and before their talk, the yank is looking out the window into the night.
On the horizon, a V2 has hit and something's burning. The brit says whats up as he enters the room and the yank says, I'm just looking to see where they're parking their freight tonight.

Buncha asshole doctors here wrote a letter to the professional review board trying to get doctors who provide early Covid treatment de-licensed because they were spreading harmful misinformation and unapproved treatments. So far, they've been told to pound sand, but the idea that early treatment will incentivize folks to bypass the clot shot is just too much for them. They get all that sweet government cash for the vax, and can't stand it that someone who is actually practicing medicine might cut into those happy profits.

First, of course it is a disincentive to lease, so that hurts the energy situation, and enrages anyone who understands how it works. BUT the rad left wanted leasing stopped COMPLETELY, so they are still pissed off that he allowed it at any price. The seats in particular. Many older engines with cast iron heads (and flatheads with cast iron blocks) don't have separate valve seats. The parent metal is simply shaped into a seat. Usually, the heads or blocks can be machined, and hardened inserts installed. For a price.

Depends on the altitude of flight. Higher, thinner altitudes present lower drag, and induced heating. Thermal limits on the payload have to be carefully ballanced, or the trigger will not funcrion. Airframe resilience, has to be buikt in for the lower altitude flight, during launch and in terminal phases. Too mich heat either renders the payload inop, or in worst cases...early high yield.

Not sportsters (1000cc), but the shovelhead engines of the bigger bikes( 1200cc). Sportsters of that era had cast iron heads, shovelheads had aluminum heads. Some dudes upgraded to the hardened seats, but many didn't and they were usually fine. The last few years of shovelheads had the hard seats. Scary shit doing valve seats. If they weren't done right the seats would fail and fall out.

They are relatively low compression, and Henry used good steel in those. They don't need leaded gasoline, nor hardened valve seats.
Valve seat erosion is a thing, but it is overblown. It was an issue, particularly in engines ran hard at high speeds like towing, or extended highway runs in some 70s engines is my understanding. Also, while the installation of hardened valve seats isn't rocket science, it has to be done correctly. If the machine shop Fs it up, you will not be a happy camper, as the seat starts flopping around inside the engine if it lets go. If you're redoing the engine or having the heads redone that's one thing, but otherwise I'd not worry about it. Amoco sold unleaded gasoline all along. They used crap steel at some point, though not in the 50s and 60s.

I found four strings of Paramount C9 lights, with mostly japanese bulbs. I think the strings are from the 1940s or 1950s. These used heavy metals in the japan lights like cadmium for coloring, which are sought after because they never fade, but could not be made today. A few brass base
bulbs, which are Sylvanias from before 1957.
I read on one websight Pink Christmas tree bulb lights are pretty rare and collectable.

yeah, the problem in the harley shovelhead is the hardened seats need more than the .004 press fit to retain the seats, and the earlier castings may not handle that, and at .004 there is a huge risk of them falling out. I have a rear head here right now from a 1974 with the earlier casting that the intake seat dropped, and he bent the exhaust valve when it slammed into the dropped seat. Whoever did the seats shit the bed big time.

Our team ran the offensive, such as it could be run, from the other side of the court, leaving that smelly half as desolate as the surface of the moon.

Yeah there seems to be a bit of a concern. The panheads could crack at .005-.006, and at .003-.004 they could fall out because those heads seem to expand more when hot. The shovelheads are supposed to be stronger, but I think some machine shops get a little spooked and don't fit them as tight, because I see them occasionally fail.

I remember in the mid 70's it jumping to $20-25 1/2 oz and $40-50 for an oz depending on what it was. There was no more lid or nickle bag. Then it stayed that way until around 1980 or so, and went up to $30 and $60. These days its $350-400. talk about inflation. lol

I seem to remember something years ago that argued hills also offered some protection from malaria. It was in the context of the Romans using the seven hills to lord it over the commoners who were stuck with malaria. Seemed stupid for a couple reasons, but this reminded me of it.

Only time I got laps on the old Riverside Raceway was on a Yamaha RD-350. Shakedown laps, which "mechanics" were allowed to do then, under the old AMA rules. You know, to sort out the changes to the bike.
We just didn't tell 'em they had a 15 y/o "mechanic" in the pits and on the bike. But, OMG. First time ever nudging the ton on anything, and I was years away from my first jet plane ride, too. Dragged pegs in the corners, but pitted after one lap. I knew my limits, even then.

Events, dear boy. Events. I think part of it is that they have grown up from a very young age constantly bombarded by stimuli. They never had common periods of rest where they can reflect, digest, center. So they are constantly on the edge of overload (if not over the line.)

Yep, one thing at a time. Most people will do far better at doing tasks sequentially, rather than trying to time share between them. CPUs can be very good at that (although there is always overhead, but it makes things appear more responsive).
Human brains are not good at it at all. Way too much task switching overheard. Makes you suck at both tasks.

I'm recalling reading something about this -- it was a pretty good analysis. Constant stimulation by smart phones and related shit is a big par of it.
The snowflakes are anxiety ridden, depressive, and have very little self-confidence and are risk-averse. They are afraid to fail so they don't want to try anything new, really. Helicopter parenting, safety culture, and all that shit is a big part of it.
They've never been allowed to fail. They don't know how to handle it. Failure is how you learn. I remember as a kid trying to new things and fucking up big time. It was fun. And having to improvise and get yourself out of a jam with no one to call for help.
You start out with baby steps as a kid, and move on to more independence. Parents and the culture do not allow that to happen, now.
And that's how you end with that pharmacist tech trainee having a meltdown over having to do something new thrown at her out of the blue.

Example. I was a little boy, maybe 5th gradish or so. I was playing in the woods -- all by myself (gasp). I manage to step in some infernal hole some animal had dug.
My foot wedges in that hole perfectly. It bent the ball of my foot. Try to pull my foot out cause my toes to dig in the side. Could not bend them back anymore. That tight bend was hurting, too.
And there I am, stuck in the woods. Will hollering and crying help? No. I panic for a little bit, then I have to figure out what to do. I'm able to grab a stick, and start using it as a little pick to chip and dig around the hole.
I widen it enough to get my foot loose. And I'm off on my merry way, and the more wiser to watch for shit like that. And also learned something about fast thinking under pressure.

That's a big one. Little bro and I did a lot of ice skating when we lived in socal. When we moved here there was a pond at the end of the street. (still is, just with a fence around it). When it froze the first time, we grabbed our skates and headed out. Got on the ice and it started to crack and move. I don't think we ever moved so fast. It's about 10 or so feet deep. Mom found out and skates were confiscated. We were thankful the wooden spoon didn't come out that time.

Addendum to coroner's report: A rusty hacksaw blade was found near the body of the nice electrician.
