Binge Watch This Post!

Happy Thanksgiving Eve Morons! I hope all of you are looking forward to a relaxing day with family and friends. I will be hosting both tomorrow, along with several local Morons. I can tell you, I'd rather spend time with Morons than with the finest people on Earth.

So, imagine that it's tomorrow after dinner. You sink back into your armchair with a groan, fighting a Tryptophan induced stupor. Deciding to watch TV, you pick up the remote, but there's nothing good on TV. What do you do? Well, you might come back here and see how people answered tonight's question: What are some obscure or semi-obscure television series that you can recommend? I'll start out with a few:

Corner Gas and Corner Gas Animated. Set in the fictional town of Dog River (played in the series by Rouleau, Saskatchewan), this screamingly funny Canadian sitcom follows the lives of a group of small town residents on the Canadian prairie. You'll never believe how much stuff happens in a place where there is not a lot going on. The live action series aired in 2004 and ran for 6 seasons and a movie, they just wrapped up a 4 season animated edition that is just as funny as the first one. It should be, it features the same cast and writers, with the exception of actress Janet Wright, who passed away in 2016. In a touching tribute, since the animated show isn't anchored to the reality of real life Rouleau, they put a statue of “Dog River founder Jane T Wright” in the town square. A nice homage.

If you ever got to Rouleau (I've been there, someone asked if I would help tear down a barn, and who wouldn't want to do that?) you can see the gas station and The Ruby, the principle sets from the show. There are not many other traces of “Dog River” left, recently the “Dog River” grain elevator burned down. Iconic 'Corner Gas' grain elevator destroyed in early morning fire

Men At Work From 2012, this sitcom lasted for 3 seasons, following 4 20-something guys navigation the dating and work scene in Chicago. I found it to be well written and quite funny, the show did a real good job of capturing the verbal sparing that goes one when guys are just being guys. It kind of slid off the radar when star Danny Masterson was accused of rape, last I heard the trial was still dragging on.

The Great Indoors lasted for one season, it was about a Field And Stream type magazine that goes completely digital, bringing Gen-X head writer and outdoorsman Jack back to the office where he has to deal with a staff comprised of whiny Gen-Z types. The characters started out as total stereotypes, but they did start to develop as the season went on, and the writers made sure that the zingers and growth went both ways. I thought it deserved another season, but whostaa gonna do?

Anyhow, those are my picks, what do you guys recommend?

14 Hmmm...
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (with Elijah "Frodo Baggins" Wood) is a pretty interesting show. Season 1 was really good. Season 2 got super woke, but it did have some interesting bits in it. I think it was canceled before they could have Season 3, which is kind of a shame because they set up something very interesting as a cliffhangar.

I would prefer New Hampshire, but their rent like property tax is disturbing. My wife who grew up in the mountains of eastern europe really wants to avoid snow.

Thought about Washington State. Too much rain. And crazed libs. So now we are only looking at conservative states. Idaho (not enough future job opportunities for the kids). Tennessee (much better, but smack dab in the middle of the US). Texas (too damned flat!).

49 My wife and I just love "Foyle's War" and recommend it to everyone. An English investigator solving crimes during WWII. Very well done.
My daughter loves "Stargate SG1."
My whole family just finished binge watching "Fringe" which is an homage to "The X-Files."
My son and I are watching "Warehouse 13" which is a nice and for the most part 'clean' show about finding artifacts (ordinary objects that have picked up magical powers. It's light and easy to watch.

In high school I got in to a summer school oceanography class. We got to tour the Calypso and go down into the viewing bubble under the bow waterline. It was cool.

69 Dad is on an old westerns kick. GunSmoke holds up pretty well IMO. And movies with Audi Murphy. There were enough good guys in HW to make a movie star out of a war hero back then. I don't play critic but I'll allow Murphy's acting was not great, pretty much played himself in most roles I think. Works for me. Fans self.

Despite his detestable politics, his movies are always worth watching. San Andreas is probably my favorite disaster-related popcorn flick. Doesn't hurt that it also featured Alexandra Daddario and Carla Gugino, both of whom are mindblowingly hot.

Only 6 episodes, but each one is chock full of laughs, sight gags, and innuendos.

(Steve Coogan as a middle-aged guy whose tastes haven't changed much since the 70s. If he were the butt of all the jokes it would have been unwatchable, but the show actually seems to view him with real affection.)

84 I'm currently working my way through Animaniacs. Not super obscure. It still holds up reasonably well, even though a lot of sketches are dated from the 1990s. Some of it is even better, now that I have a lot more life experience to understand the jokes.

Rat Patrol holds up just for the vehicles alone.

To mix storylines, I present the following:

A friend during my college days, owned a SWAT Box (remember that show) truck. For jollies we'd liberate a few of the water based fire extinguishers form other dorms, and drive around campus...some times off campus, and hose down the unwary.
We called it Rat Patrolling. Slowly cruise the street, throw open the back doors and let fly on the unsuspecting targets.
No one really complained unless we were out and about in the deep North Country winters. And yes, we refilled, recharged, and returned the extinguishers...we weren't heathens.

I met Lash LaRue when I was on Navy recruiting duty. He was in a bar we would go for wings and beer. Spent 4 hours talking to him and he offered to take a cigarette out of my mouth with that whip. I liked Falling Skies, until they started running out of ideas around season three or so. I still finished the series, though. Another one that came out around the same time was Terra Nova, a pretty good show with a season one cliffhanger ending, and canceled before season two.

214 Anybody ever Father Ted?
One of my favorite of the British comedy shows. I really didn't like a lot of them - as much as I was told I would.

But Father Ted is a classic, my favorite of the 90's. Too bad it was so short lived and Dermot Morgan (one of the leads) passed literally at the wrap party. I could watch those over and over. When you hear Critical Drinker talk about Craggy Island, that's what he's referencing.

Another favorite from the 80's is The Young Ones. Father Ted took some of the surrealism from that show, but Young Ones was way the hell out there. Also short - but that's probably what made them all so good.

I believe they actually tried an American version or were dangerously close to making one. That would have fallen flatter than the American version of Fawlty Towers. Some shows simply cannot translate to American audiences or the USA in general.

Oh yeah, one more but a tad less obscure was Absolutely Fabulous. In a way, that was related to The Young Ones. That show was a success, and had lots of related shows.

This is a scanty description; I hope to get this to post.

The last season didn't work quite as well as the first ones, and that's certainly a show that American audiences would mostly not get. Some of it was too smart for its own good. Nobody could insult like Rowan.

I enjoyed Mr. Bean, but Black Adder stands head and shoulders above. The entire cast was pitch perfect.

In my former life (one of them) the one I was telling Jack Straw about last night - one of the fantastic bits was meeting the great surviving animation artists, or their families. I was tasked with going down and pitching the Wards, and it went as well as expected. I got to see so much of Jay's work and that of Chris Hayward. As a kid, I thought the world of Fractured Flickers, Crusader Rabbit, Fractured Fairy Tales, Peabody's Improbable History and of course Rocky and Bullwinkle. Not everybody gets to have El Pollo Loco with the Wards surrounded by production cells and drawings from R&B.

Skip, if you're still around, try the movie Frequently Asked Questions about Time Travel. It was really well done and pretty funny. The first few scenes seems like an awful low budget flick, but stick with it until they get to the bar and things really get going. It was a fun ride.

i was doing ok on house until his boss perjured herself to keep him from being put away on a drug charge. totally lost interest in the show.

316 Thriller -- the one hosted by Boris Karloff, not the British import. Okay when they were doing crime stories, but when they started mining the horror pulps for material they were just wonderful. Episodes like The Hungry Glass, The Weird Tailor, Papa Benjamin, Pigeons from Hell, and Yours Truly Jack the Ripper (lotta Robert Bloch in there) still hold up nicely.

Combat -- not obscure but wow does it still deliver. Not just war action stories, either -- check out an episode called A Cry in the Ruins, which is one of the best hours of television I've seen.

I can still sing at least some of the theme song. Damn, that was a stupid show but I loved it as a kid. Unfortunately the premise could only get them so far, and reversing the roles was just dumb.

Also - if you recall how Batman screwed up even the most serious TV shows, but they attempted so many camp type shows to capture that zeitgeist?

338 Moone Boy is a great Irish sitcom that ran for 3 seasons and is on Hulu. It's about a 12 year old boy from a working class family and his imaginary friend. It takes place from 1989-1992. The humor is very much like an Irish version of Malcolm in the Middle except he has sisters instead of brothers. All of the characters are fantastic, and even the jerk characters manage to somehow be lovable. Just an outstanding show!!

I was not exactly raised Shinto, but I was multi-cultural before my time. My Dad playing me Koto music from the Edo period helped.

I'm on my second run through now.
Plot is a fake psychic announces he will use his "powers" to help catch a notorious serial killer but the serial killer murders the psychics' family. He then connives his way onto the police team hunting the killer.
Good situations, good use of mentalist tricks and cons. Good little jokes and jibes (sometimes a little over contrived but still enjoyable). Occasionally they come up with a very unusual take on a character even some disturbing moments. The series was unusually honest in the writing with the climax of the primary plot arc (you'll know it when you see it)..

344 I don't recall that the 80s Twilight Zone got much love, but that show had some terrific segments; they adapted great stories by Harlan Ellison, Robert Silverberg, Robert McCammon and others. Good stuff.

More obscure -- a funny 1-season show called Tenspeed and Brownshoe with Ben Vereen as a con man and Jeff Goldblum as a private-eye wannabe. Every show had maniac voice-overs of Goldblum reading pulp private eye novels chronicling the adventures of Mark Savage, Private Eye (made up for the show). I was working at Kroch's & Brentano's in Chicago at the time, and a lot of people asked for those books and weren't happy to be told they didn't exist.

That one is excellent. I also especially like "The Demon With a Glass Hand" with Robert Culp, and "Soldier" with Michael Ansara as the soldier from the future sent back to the 1960s in a time storm, along with an enemy soldier who's trapped in limbo for a while.

352 Salty, don't get me started on Star Trek plot holes. But a lot of the strange problems the crew gets into are plot necessities, not physics or time sequence impossibilities-type plot holes.

Why is the transporter always unavailable when a shuttle craft is stranded on a planet? Why are shuttle craft forgotten about when the transporter is busted? When the transporter is busted, why don't they move ops to Transporter Room B or C or D or...(in one episode multiple transporter rooms are mentioned).

354 many good shows out there ....never even saw Have Gun Will Travel in syndication, took a chance renting via netflix(back in the DVD era) wow, very good stories, the west just happens to be the backdrop if you aren't crazy about westerns. If you want something with a bit more humor, Bat Masterson is a lot of fun, and a lot of action. Gene Barry's next show, Burke's Law, is chuck full of sexy women and a lot of older celebs. (An Aaron Spelling idea long before Love Boat,and long before he sold out completely) Check it out on youtube, much better than you could imagine.

I've gotten to watch Perry Mason, which my husband can't believe I've never seen. We had a color tv but our parents wouldn't allow us to watch anything.

368 For me sometimes serious can be good, but I mostly like comedic storylines and shows that aren't afraid to mock themselves-so I agree with the recommendation Brisco County for example. I also recommend the first few years of Glen Gordon Caron's "Moonlighting." The pre tough guy Bruce Willis is great as a fast talking con man, and Caron, or whoever, coaxed some very funny acting from Cybill Shepard essentially making fun of herself-a bit like Raquel Welch in the Musketeers films. The dialogue was at times outstanding, and Caron did a great job of integrating music with the story.

369 Also, even for those who are cold to the show generally, one episode of Star Gate SG1 was great. An alien (played by the ubiquitous Willie Garson) has had his memory of SG1 erased, but some memories leak through and he uses them to write a low budget TV show called "Wormhole Extreme." Part of the Stargate episode's backdrop involves shooting an episode of Wormhole Extreme with all kinds of callbacks to SG1 episodes, but the best part is the closing supposed "outtakes" shown at the end of the episode. There, among other riffs on the show and series, we have the two DeLuise brothers (Peter-writer and director of SG1) and David (playing the "star" of Wormhole Extreme) arguing about whether or not Wormhole Extreme is a real TV series-"Does my agent know Wormhole Extreme isn't a real show?" There's a followup episode with Garson's alien going to the Stargate crew for ideas for a TV series. One idea pitched by Claudia Black's character is the Farscape TV series she starred in with Ben Browder, another of the Stargate cast-she also pitches the Wizard of Oz and other well known stories to Garson as episode ideas.

371 I'm amazed how much writers packed into a 1/2 hour show back in the day.
See "Have Gun Will Travel" or "Sea Hunt".

But I've been binge watching "Lie To Me" with Tim Roth recently.
It is like a body language expert except it focuses on the face, mostly.
Without the commercials, many old shows are 100% better.

Also loved Maverick, but only the James Garner episodes.
Still think the greatest show ever was Hill Street Blues. Went on too long, but those first few seasons were like nothing that I'd ever seen on TV before. Almost every good show since owes it a debt...
