This is the sort of arrant nonsense that the federal government spouts to fool the rubes into thinking that it's just their imagination that prices for pretty much everything are out of control.

Consumer spending rebounds despite rising October inflation

U.S. consumer spending rebounded by a solid 1.3% in October despite inflation that over the past year has accelerated faster than it has at any point in more than three decades.
The jump in consumer spending last month was double the 0.6% gain in September, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.
At the same time, consumer prices rose 5% compared with the same period last year, the fastest 12-month gain since the same stretch ending in November 1990. The surge in prices this year did contribute to the 1.6% rise in spending in November, yet adjusting for inflation, spending was still up a solid 0.7% after a 0.3% inflation-adjusted gain in September.

Notice how vague this is? Of course it's the Chicago Tribune, a reliably leftist rag, but can anyone figure out whether they are counting fuel costs in the increased spending? Because that is a big deal, since most people do not have the luxury of not purchasing fuel. It is inelastic until the prices hit astronomic numbers. I know that the government does not use food and fuel costs in their inflation calculation, or at least the one that everyone uses...the CPI

My wild-ass-guess for the real inflation rate...the one that counts ALL the stuff I buy...including fuel and food...is at least 20%.

See ShadowStats. That guy does the inflation calculations the old way. They made two major changes to the CPI, one around 1980, and the other around 1992 or so. He calculates under both of the old methods.

Pre-80 inflation is running just a tad under 15%. That is, if we were calculating inflation the same way as we did in the '70s, we are at '70s inflation levels.

I'm going to guess at about 13%, but it is just a WAG.
There's other ways costs go up by hiding getting less. We all know about the weight of cans and packaged stuff, but check out the water content added to meats like chicken. Or speculate how much water was added to that absorbent diaper they put under the meat before the meat was packaged. Or see which cuts of meat suddenly have bone and a slightly different name for the same old roast but now with bone at the old price.

There's numerous ways to hide an increase in prices, but the part I like best is saying spending is UP by x%.
Of course it is! That's a feature of inflation. You spend more for the same lifestyle or less.

Cheaper than Asin Tibuok! Which would actually make a good CBD food thread. Those little suckers go for $60 or so last I looked. I remember 30 some odd years ago before people heard of Himalayan pink salt - we used to get a mined salt - I think they just called it Tibetan salt, it was gray with spots of pink and yellow. I think the Gabelle was increased before the French revolution.
The crown was broke from spending and financing the US Revolution. The exchequer had been fudging the books for decades and I think they had lingering problems with the economy since the Mississippi bubble and their first attempt with fiat money. Added to that was an attempt to firm up tax revenues from a very splintered system that was defeating itself from internal excise taxes.
As usual, the government was out of money and couldn't find a thing on which to economize.

The Republic of course, had no money since they created their own land backed fiat that they were inflating as well as fighting small rebellions and the Austrians. Originally one of the promises was to end the salt tax, but of course it was too profitable.

They actually do include fuel and food, by they also make a calculation without those two because food and fuel are more volitile, and one of the main uses of the CPI is to measure inflation over longer periods of time for things like projecting future expenditures. It becomes useless if measuring from Jan '16 to Jan '17 shows 2.1% annual inflation, Jul '16 to Jul '17 shows 8% annual inflation, and Sep '16 to Sep '17 shows 2% annual inflation all because a events caused a spike in food and fuel prices in the summer.

Not to mention that long-run increases in food and fuel prices will end up spreading through the rest of the economy. Rising prices should mean workers eventually demand higher wages to keep up, forcing employers to raise prices on other goods and services.

They have to keep it low, otherwise they can't afford the interest on the debt. Eventually they will have to default or renegotiate.
If Trump gets in he will renegotiate since he is good at that, and he was successful the last couple of times he did it.

The reset will occur when other countries require goods rather than paper to repay currency. Loss of reserve status of US currency will amplify the collapse as those dollars get repatriated or repudiated. Voila, Argentina or Turkey at best, Venezuela or Zimbabwe at worst.

The accusation was that the government is deliberately excluding food and fuel from inflation calculations, which simply isn't true. They do collect that information, and include it in the CPI-U, which is a very commonly used index. They do calculate inflation without it as well, but as stated above, there are legitimate reasons why you might want to exclude food and fuel, especially if you're looking at long-term trends.

Transport and carrying costs for inventory are soaring for businesses as I suspect a lot of Hobby Lobby stuff is made in China. Labor, when you can get it, costs are soaring as well. Chest freezers seem to be most convenient for that moose or deer. Big chunks you don't access often. Even the ones I've seen that try to do the sliding shelf and compartment thing aren't particularly easy. But they're really the way to go for long-term freezing.

For trading purposes, everything is held in "street name". Years ago you could get stock certs issued in your name. Doubtful anymore.

What I'm getting at, if Wall Street Lays an Egg, I would not be surprised if a whole bunch of people - millions - get totally stiffed on what appear to be stellar gains, on paper. "Mistakes were made." Etc.

355 Projections taken from the memos of producers to retailers are that by April 2022 prices will be on average 20-25% higher than they are now.

The producers have sent these memos to the big box stores and the like and indicate they will be raising their prices across the board starting Jan.

And in other good news, I expect that the Fed will raise the interest rates by at least 2% and as much as 5% for the first round come the beginning of the year. They will have to or we will experience the bottom dropping out of the dollar such as what is happening to the lira in Turkey because Turkey isn't raising it's interest rates. It's being told to but Ergodan refuses to go along.

And higher interest rates will be important to any who have a variable rate mortgage and/or revolving credit accounts.

It means that people minimum payments to keep out of default will be that much or more higher as most of these types of lending peg their interest rate to a percentage above what the Fed interest rate is. So a minimum payment now of say $50 will be $60 after the rate increase. OR MORE. Which means (as happened with the rise in gas prices) that people start to default to pay for basics.

Actually, that's exactly what I did when I was a student and lived on that shit. The Mexican markets have their own Knorr bouillon, for a fraction of the cost of the regular stuff for some reason. And, in a variety of flavors, like tomato/chicken and beef/vegetable. I had a gallon zip lock baggie full of the unused little silver flavor packs.
