GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR)

The perspective in that photo is kind of odd. Those chess pieces look ginormous.

Moviegique will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1321)

Goal: Black can force mate in 2 moves
Hint: It's another kind of smothered mate

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - Black To Play

20211127 Problem 1.jpg
5k2/pp3pnR/q2pb1p1/6P1/5P2/1NQ5/rPP3P1/1KR5 b - - 0 1

1...Ra1+
2.Nxa1

Forced. Black can now mate with either

2...Ba2#

or

2...Qa2#

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play

20211127 Problem 2.jpg
8/8/Q7/3n4/6P1/K7/1pkn4/5B2 b - - 0 1

1...b1=N+!

This underpromotion leads to a quick mate whereas

1...b1=Q 2.Bd3+ Kd1 3.Bxb1

loses a tempo and, ultimately, the game.

2.Ka4 Nbc3+
3.Ka5 Nb3#

Advanced Problem - Black To Play

20211127 Problem 3.jpg
8/5pk1/1p1R1qpp/8/1Q6/P7/1Pr1rPPP/5RK1 b - - 0 1

1...Rxf2 2.Qf4

A move not going to be found by most club players. This line is more reasonable: 2.Rxf6 Rxg2+ 3.Kh1 Rxh2+ 4.Kg1 Rcg2#

2...Qxf4
3.Rxg6+ fxg6
4.Rxf2 Rc1+ (or 4...Qxf2+ 5.Kh1 Qxg2#)
5.Rf1 Qxf1#

Hope to see you next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed it skipped the Greek letters "nu" and "xi" in naming its new COVID-19 variant, which it dubbed the "omicron" variant.

"'Nu' is too easily confounded with 'new,' and 'xi' was not used because it is a common last name, and WHO best practices for naming disease suggest avoiding 'causing offence to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups,'" a WHO spokesperson told Fox News in a statement on Saturday.

114 Advanced Problem.

As HB noted. 1. ... Rxf2 (threat: Rxg2+ ; ... Rxh2+ ... Rc2g2# ).

To stop the threat W must protect g2 or he can interfere with the connection between Black's rooks. Moving the R on f1 does not work unless it takes on f2 because the Black Q guards the f1 square after Rxg2+. So all the cases that are not mate in 5 are:

2. Qe4 or Qg4 Rxf1#

2. Rxf2 Qxf2+ 3. Kh1 Qf1#

2. Rd2 Rxf1#

Otherwise the default mate works.

it's long, but a great analysis of the situation. A feature of Texas homicide law is that there's not a lot of difference between murder and manslaughter, save for the sentence given. In fact, a manslaughter conviction with some aggravating factors can sometimes produce a longer prison sentence than a murder charge with mitigating factors.

ordinarily you'd expect voluntary manslaughter to carry a sentence of about 10 - 15 years.

He comes to us where we are, offering to enter into conversation with us an reveal truths about our lives, our circumstances and Himself.

There hasn't been a single case of Moronic in NY, and I don't think even in the whole US yet. It's probably already here, circulating and competing. We'll see if how fit it is.

But so far, all the data shows this thing is no more lethal any other, and in fact may be less virulent. It may be more transmissible. In fact, that is the natural course of most such viruses. They evolve to become less lethal and more transmissible. This end state depends on our population level immune system behavior as much as it does the virus behavior.

What is scaring the shit out them is that Moronic may be much better at vaccine evasion, and just blow up their little lies.

I think mixed in with the fear is the understanding that if they say anything different now than they've said before, they'll be admitting they were wrong in how they've handled this entire thing.

And they can't have that. So we're locked into doing the same thing over and over, even if it fails, because they can't admit they made a mistake.

You may simply be one of the estimated 50% in the US population who had damn good neutralizing, if not even sterilizing cross-immunity to the stupid thing due to exposure to previous coronaviruses that had much in common with this one.

A paper was a out a while back that confirmed the mechanism of the cross-immunity (RTC complexes). The fraction who have this varies with different populations, but in the US it was likely 50%.

If you have the cross-immunity, you will not develop infection specific antibodies (N-antibodies). You don't need to. You existing immune recognition kills it.

The study found people (health care workers) who were exposed many times, never got symptomatic, and never seroconverted.

They didn't need to. They were already immune by luck of the draw.

Look up Alton's Good Eats episode about this. He explains why. (of course he does!!) The par-boiling renders away some of the fat from the skin, so it can crisp up better.

Now I actually use an air fryer. But the par-boiling thing does indeed work well. Plus, you are left with a nice chicken stock.

Inflation is caused by money printing (and/or refusal to accept it out of country - see the German Mark about 1929) the statistic I saw is that 20% of the dollars created since 1800 have been created in the last 20 months.

The move to property and stocks is due to nothing else preserving value well. Even Gold and Silver are taxed when you sell it, and that wipes out value that is otherwise retained.

The dollar will devalue or Government debts will be repudiated. Trump would try to renegotiate terms for repayment since he has done this a couple of times, but the Turnip-in-Chief has got no clue about money except he gets 10% for enabling corruption.

Inflation is only driven by demand when supply fails, and then you have famine pricing. This is repairable either in ramping up production or by shipping stuff in. But the Turnip-in-chief is stomping on production and on importing and his band of flying monkeys think of inflation in terms of iPhone releases.
