Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Not Guilty Edition!A: No, no Weasel has not said everything he wanted to say regarding the Rittenhouse trial. We discussed this some last week and I cannot recall who mentioned they thought it problematic to a televise a criminal trial. I happen to agree with the sentiment, if for no other reason than the addition of this element to the proceedings usually has the effect of turning them into a circus. If you have a legitimate personal interest in what is going on, then buy a bus ticket and head for the courthouse. Having said that, as long as these things are televised, then we might as well get some good out of them. Back in the days of courtroom sketch artists and print coverage, the potential still existed for bias in reporting and political grandstanding, we just didn't have the opportunity to see it with our own eyes and to form our own opinions. In that regard, I suppose the the ability to watch a good thing, and in this case it allowed us to witness first-hand the prosecutorial overreach and disregard for the defendant's constitutional rights. During the testimony and deliberations I tuned into the Rekieta Law live stream on YouTube periodically, and have to say I found the analysis by the panel of attorneys to be most interesting and enlightening. Chiefly among them was our own pal and sometimes Gun Thread commenter Andrew Branca, Attorney and author of the book The Law of Self-Defense, which Mr. Branca is currently offering for FREE if you pay for shipping. Free is a very good price-point, and I encourage you to order a copy and study it. I have said this before, but if you have to shoot someone in self-defense, your troubles are only getting started. It's likely to be both financially and emotionally ruinous for you and your family, and you need to know the law in advance so you do as little as possible to help the prosecution. Mr. Branca has a couple of Law of Self Defense membership options offering various benefits available which you might be interested in. Check it out and don't forget to thank Mr. B for his generosity. So what do you all think? Clearly the end result was a blessing, but what are your thoughts on media coverage in the courtroom? In this specific case, do you think it helped by shaping public opinion? Have you ordered the free book yet? I had a friend of mine play around with his laser and thought it came out pretty good. It's an old STI frame with a bar-sto barrel, Ed Brown slide and Novak sights. It holds 14 in the mag with one in the pipe of .45ACP goodness.Very nice, Nevada Dave! Now maybe am AoS logo? Hrothgar bit on one of the PSA PSA's and picked up a blem AR15 upper and lower for a VERY reasonable full rifle build price. It looks great in tan furniture maybe he will send a photo along! It went to the range with the Moron Gun Club last week and shot pretty well out of the box, but he wanted to get it zeroed on the iron sights. I have a Bushmaster AR acquired about ten years ago that I never zeroed so sounded like a good reason for a range trip. I first zeroed an M16 in, ahem, 1984. The technique hasn't really changed that much. This NRA article has a 5 step process - we only did the last 3 which is pretty much : how the Army taught me. Zero targets are available on the internet for printing on regular 8.5 x 11 paper. We used these. We were a little worried we wouldn't be able to even see the silhouette at 25 yards given that it isn't 1984 anymore. But it worked out okay. We had a "draft" zeroing target, then we finalized on another. On mine there really are six rounds on target! Then we each put a full mag into another target at 15 yards and despite our finely tuned zeroing while seated with a bag, standing we both ended up shooting consistently low and to the left, but not too badly. Tempted to dial in a couple clicks right and up but that undoes the work of the zero!Nice job, guys! It's great to have a regular range buddy to work with, isn't it? All ya'll stay tuned in the coming weeks for more range antics from this wacky duo. Last Saturday I took my brother-in-law to my sportsman's club for trap. It was closed but fortunately we came prepared. We took to the rifle range first. Pictured is my Modern Material Patrol, which is manufactured in New Jersey, if you can believe that! Experienced shooters who've fired say the pop up sites are some of the best they've used. So any inaccuracies on the target are all me. Second picture is the target. We shot at 50 yards. I wear dollar store readers so I messed around with and without them. Told my lovely wife that I need to make a trip to the eye doctor. Shot center, high, and low, so I didn't do too bad. I recently bought some .22LR from various manufacturers and took my S&W Victory 22 and my Ruger 10/22 Takedown to my local indoor range to see if they would digest them. All fed without problem. I think the 10/22 sights are shit; POI was nowhere near POA. It couldn't possibly be my fault! 10 Yards 25 yards Anyway, I had excess ammo I did not feel like carrying home, so I tried my hand with the Victory at 10 and 25 yards; targets attached. Meh. In my defense, I have not been to the range to practice for the better part of a year. Not all Morons are crack shots; I need to get to the range more often.Reviewing the targets I've never seen a clearer example of shooting in socks that are too tight. Seriously, what's not to like? You have a ton of hits and haven't been to the range in a year. I'd say you were doing pretty well! Just make it a habit to practice a little more often, and always go to the range with a plan or training objective in mind. You don't have to make it a big deal, just pick the area where you feel you needed some extra work from the last trip, and concentrate on that first the next time you go. I cannot overemphasize this; having a plan at the range makes your practice that much more focused and effective. Finally, don't confuse plinking with training! Plinking is fun and that's what I do a ton of anymore at the farm, but if I were getting ready for a match or otherwise trying to up my game, my practice routine and range time would look a lot different. I also applaud your using a .22LR for practice. It's economical and fun to shoot which generally results in more trigger time. I have said this before, but you can practice all the major components of rifle marksmanship at a small fraction of the cost of centerfire cartridges. Practice, practice, practice is the key! As long as we are talking about the .22LR, here's a video on the ballistics of the cartridge. Link-O-Rama I'm really very seriously not kidding around anymore. Weasel haven't tried that R & J yet, but it's on my (long) list of candidates to try. Had a Perla del Mar maduro yesterday, very nice. I don't quite sync with the standard way of describing cigar profiles. "Full strength" or "strong" seems to correlate, actually, to mild, flavorful, rich, in many cases (especially with maduros).

A little gun mod info:
I have a Ruger PC-9 Carbine. It's a breakdown model where the barrel can be detached from the receiver without tools. It came with a Venom red dot sight. I have never cared for the stock furniture on this gun. It's heavy to begin with, and the plastic/fiberglass stock just seems too much for it. Anyway, the other day I was on Reddit Ruger sub and saw where Magpul had a "Backpacker" aftermarket stock available for the PC-9. What's innovative about this stock is that the foregrip/barrel can be snapped into a recessed part of the stock. There's also a small compartment in the stock for an additional magazine. 3 Allen screws are all it takes. Seems like Glock mags are now commoditized, thanks not only to the yuuuuge Glock "installed base", but the large and growing number of PCCs and such that take them. Some odd but friendly guys on duty day this week had some kind of little PCC - "aero-something"? - 9mm, skimpy little thing, took Glock mags. Makes a lot of sense for manufacturers to build that compatibility in.

Two things I will pull from the TX Declaration of Independence that I will leave here before checking out, that are relevant given the past week:
Trial by jury is "that palladium of civil liberty and the only safe guarantee for the life, liberty and property of the citizen". And that firearms and the ability to own them are "essential to our defence, the rightful property of freemen, and formidable only to tyrannical governments." Busy but pretty prosaic duty day this week. Older guy who couldn't get some Federal 45ACP hollowpoints to run in his Kimber just gave me the box, which is nice. Will add them to my stock for when I carry the 1911 on duty days.
I quickly went up to one of the smaller ranges and checked, two mags' worth ran fine in my 1911. Got the #2 M1 sighted in nicely (16 clicks up @100 yds, for my reloads, odd, my older notes say 13 clicks, but whatever). Then, for the 2nd consecutive time, couldn't sleep last night and missed the action rifle match I was tuning it up for. Infuriating beyond words. For first time saw a group of illegals walking the main highway - black clothes, backpacks. They've been showing up at/around the range, in day time, too, reportedly. Howdy Weasel!! Howdy fellow gun cranks!!
First, my gun buddy Rick was prowling the Chantilly show looking for some things on MY want list. Friday PM he had picked up 100 rounds of 75 grain hornady match bullets, a new RCBS die set, appropriate shell holder, and a new hornady reloading manual. I had to go to the main Houston PD station downtown on Monday to pick up a police report I had filed. Had to park a few blocks away . When I got there I realized I forgot to take my backup .380 Bodyguard out of my pocket . I decided instead of walking back to my car I asked the desk sergeant if they could hold my gun while I went to the records department. He told me as long as I am remaining on first floor I was okay to carry . As I was emptying my pockets to go through metal detector the other officer told me I'd have to leave my keys with him or could take off the pen knife I had on my key chain. He made a point of telling me its okay that I can carry but can't bring in any type of knife. I think he was saying it with sarcasm.

Chantilly show trip report: Went out Friday and today, right after the doors opened. Traffic seemed light, but increased as the day went on. I'm told that Saturday was quite heavy. The notably smaller pile of guns at the larger vendors' tables appear to confirm this. Looks like guns and gear are on a number of people's shopping list for Christmas.

Winston, I've got an Exodus in the two samplers I got recently from Thompson. Impossible to tell if it's Exodus 1959, or some variation - band is different. Accompanying literature (which generally was good and informative) only clouded things further, referring to a "make-over" for the Exodus 1959 line, without detailing exactly what (beyond a new band design) that entailed.

Honestly, once you get started, the initial cost of the press is not all that big a deal. If it really does matter, the Lee Precision aluminum O-frame is a pretty good deal. Torano has some very nice cigars aside from the Exodus. That one has a large gold band that proudly says 1959 the year the family got out of Cuba with a lot of seeds. If it's the color label, like purple, those are milder but good. I also found at Cigars Int, one by them called Hogshead. Also very good. Pretty inexpensive. The Exodus 1959 is the first non JR cigars I started smoking years ago. All well worth while. Posted by: Winston, GOPe, not one dime, not one vote at November 21, 2021 07:34 PM (BSV0x) 114

Neighbors changed poker night to 5pm Idaho time, so I have to run. (They are addicted to Yellowstone, so we will watch that, and then have some high stakes ($15 a piece!) poker). Went deer hunting for the first time this week (Winchester 70). Right after a fresh snow. In some ways ideal. While we saw some fresh tracks, none of us fired a shot, never saw a deer. Maybe we will go again tomorrow morning. Went clay pigeon hunting today(Beretta Silver Pigeon 12g). Killed a bunch of those fluorescent orange devils and had a lot of fun. Did not do too bad, only my second time in my life shooting a shot gun. Tried out my friends 20g. Interesting. Much lighter gun (Browning Citori). I mentioned an enhanced concealed carry class last week. I emailed the teacher about revolvers for participants in the class. He wrote back and said revolvers are fine. It was about getting people through 98 shots per the state of Idaho. Difficult with a revolver. Otherwise he said he is a big fan of revolvers, and they welcome them, and will work them in to class. Martini Farmer, funny, all three of those names just came on my radar the last few days.
There are so, so many brands and lines, it's sort of amazing. Tim at Cigars Daily says the main issue with the cigar sector now is not logistics, or manufacturing interruptions, but simple excess demand. People are buying/burning sticks at all-time high levels. He predicts some major brands will be dropping production of certain lines for at least a while, to focus on top-sellers. He gets his info from inside the industry, so he may be right. For me it's a question of when to stop only sampling and start buying a quantity of the winning candidates. Posted by: rhomboid at November 21, 2021 07:35 PM (OTzUX) 117

I'll be making a trip to Cabelas soon and for an odd reason.
There used to be little tool for making your own percussion caps called Tap-O-Cap. It was discontinued several years ago but another company makes a similar tool. The website is 22lrreloader dot com. There is one for number 10 and one to make number 11 caps. (They also sell the tools and materials to reload 22lr and mag rimfires.) Likely Rittenhouse related. Waukesha is a classic overwhelmingly white small county seat sorta town. Technically, Milwaukee metro, short driving distance, but not really, and it's exactly the kinda place you'd wanna go if you were a mostly peaceful protester looking for revenge this weekend.

An investment firm founded by Hunter Biden facilitated a $3.8 billion purchase of an American-owned cobalt mine by a Chinese conglomerate
According to a former BHR board member, Hunter and the other American founders were not involved in the mine deal, and the firm only earned a 'nominal' fee on the deal. The proceeds allegedly went towards the firm's operating expenses, and was not distributed to its owners. Uh, huh. 10% for the big guy. There used to be little tool for making your own percussion caps called Tap-O-Cap. It was discontinued several years ago but another company makes a similar tool. The website is 22lrreloader dot com. There is one for number 10 and one to make number 11 caps. (They also sell the tools and materials to reload 22lr and mag rimfires.) A young guy had a new-to-him CMP Service Grade at the range this week. Had never seen the CMP stock - very nice. Unfinished. Several of us reco'd a gradual linseed oil treatment - wait til April or so when it's warm again and do one coat, let the stock bake in the sun a bit (also darkens the treatment). His serial number was high, post-war, an HRA like mine.
An RO trainee, in the Corps for a while when younger, had never shot the M1, he was stoked to the max when I insisted he empty some clips. He also remarked on how easy it was to shoot accurately, just picking it up, and the power of the thing, as well as the beauty of the industrial art. By far the most popular rifle at the range, in my experience. Posted by: rhomboid at November 21, 2021 07:47 PM (OTzUX) 168

Overhead video shows some initial hesitation, very briefly, but that might have been a sudden realization that they were running over children. Drugged up suicidal race ragers might not have thought through the kid angle before living out their fantasy. Some police chatter that the shots heard on video were retaliatory PD fire, not from inside the car. Weasel, this isn't specifically tied to Waukesha, but what do you think about the practicalities of CCW-ing something a la the SP5K or Mini/Micro Uzi to better the odds should you have a "close encounter of worst kind" like this? Cold weather garb makes it easier to CCW something like these small PCC, and having a couple of 30 round magazines for reloads to a 15 round mag in the firearm means you can bring serious firepower if it's needed. But w/o SBR-ing these, you can't have a forward vertical grip or a collapsible stock.

I saw The Green Knight last night. Good acting and visuals.
But...I knew there was going to be a problem when I saw the director was a fervent atheist. Why? King Arthur is sort of a British Jesus in most telling. The Green Knight is mostly about Gawain but Arthur is an important character. And essentially the story then becomes a story about the fear of death and the pointlessness of life in the face of the nothingness of eternity. I've had a variety of Oliva's. Their Melanio's are pretty good, but pricey. The Saison's I've smoked were pretty good too. Hell, I even periodically get a couple Nub's for fun. (I'm obviously not picky.) Posted by: Martini Farmer at November 21, 2021 08:06 PM (BFigT) 253
Jesse I don't know your shooting profile and ammo use but Lee's 4-hole turret press, to me, is hard to beat in the non-progressive category. Remove indexing rod (as I do for my 30-06 loading), and, presto, single-stage press. Replace the rod and, for handgun ammo, you can churn out decent amounts using the turret functionality, fairly quickly.

I would never suggest breaking any laws, but I technically carried for years before my state caught up with me and likely many, many others and went to "constitutional carry". Your personal safety, and that of your family comes first. It's a personal decision, but there is no substitute for effective self defense in a failed or failing state.

Martini I have had disappointing times with Nubs so far, but I think mostly due to cigar condition/my pace of consumption at the time (bitterness and char coming into the picture). Only the maduro version, so far, has been as good as I expected. Had 2nd Cameroon a few days ago, it's been in my humidor for 6 weeks, no question of condition, but again, so-so and then harshness. Puzzling.
Want to try the sumatra, that kind of wrapper generally appeals to me. Right now Cigar.com has a 20-pack of Oliva Vs/V melanios/maduros for $120, which is not bad for that line, and gives exposure to all the variations. Posted by: rhomboid at November 21, 2021 08:11 PM (OTzUX) 276

Weasel, although something like the SP5K or Mini/Micro Uzi may seem better than a handgun on paper, I think you're right; the handgun is a more practical choice. Unless you have previous experience carrying something like these small PCC, concealing these would be more challenging than even a service sized handgun. And, unless you're carrying more magazines than John Wick, you're lugging around less weight.

A Large subtext of the Arthur stories was about Christian Knights, forcing back the Pagans. In some ways, it's about Judeo Christian Western Civilization, vs the forces of darkness. I'd get furious with trying to say that Arthur wouldn't care if Gawain went and died.
The basic idea seems to be since death is inevitable no one really cares if Gawain will die within the year, at the hands of the Green Knight, or if he'll live a long time and die a disappointed ruler. It is a very modern movie, and I can't think of a more accurate capturing of the current cultural moment. We just happen to have a terrible culture. Keitel (known contemptuously as "la-Keitel", for "lackey", among officers without the red stripes on the pants) actually left the bunker for a while and made contact with Wenck, to the west of the govt. district - and he returned to the bunker to report. Steiner pretty quickly signaled back when given his ridiculous orders that he had no means to comply. Wenck actually tried to break through, back to the east, but failed, and quickly set about more useful actions, like getting civilians and soldiers to the west to surrender to the Americans/Brits. The movie I think is wrong on this one, thus the "Steiner will come" bit. Doesn't misrepresent the basic situation, but Wenck was the last hope, not Steiner.

Two questions I would ask him if I had the chance: 1. "Why was there no discussion of the concept that once an otherwise unarmed aggressor grabs your weapon, that person is also considered "armed" for purposes of self-defense law?" And whoever took nine days was stopping to drink a lot, because it's only about five days or six if you are less speed inclined. I would suggest taking the ferry if you prefer less driving and more sightseeing. Ferry from north of Seattle to Haines, and then driving the rest. Plus, you can bring long guns through Canada.

A Rant: Kyle needed to have a gun expert testify for the defense. First of all an AR-15 is not even legal for hunting deer in most states, because the 5.56 cartridge is considered under powered for that purpose. Military doctrine changed during Vietnam.
It used to be that the 30-06 cartridge of both World Wars was intended to kill enemy soldiers. The modern M4 firing M193 ammo is designed primarily to wound the enemy, since the military figured out that a wounded soldier ties up far more enemy resources than a dead one does. Battle field medics, hospitals and medical supplies vs a hole in the ground for a dead soldier. The one in seven twist on the M4 over stabilizes the 55 grain bullet of M193 minimizing its ability to tumble, while the shorter barrel, compared to the Vietnam era M16, reduces the power of the round. ARs based on modern M4s are hardly the killing machines the MSM makes them out to be. One simply has to show a jury an M193 round compared to a 30-06, to drive that point home. The Vietnam era M16 with its 20 inch barrel and looser, tumble promoting, rifling is a far deadlier weapon than the modern M4. I believe there's a lot of prosecutorial misconduct, not just in my case but in other cases. It's just amazing to see how much a prosecutor can take advantage of someone." "He's relieved, and he looks forward to getting on with his life. And having a jury of 12 people find him not guilty meant the world to him, in practical and symbolic ways," Richards, said on the steps of the courthouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Earlier video seemed to show them skirting the edge of the road, trying to avoid people. At the end they swerved from the right side to the left before plowing through the band. But the band was taking up the entire width of the road, there was no way around. I suspect that maybe these urbanites committed a robbery somewhere else and were fleeing, but ended up on the parade route. They were looking for a way out, but found none, panicked, and plowed through.

Kyle was interviewed that evening, prior to the uh, Later Unpleasantness, and he seemed to be pro-BLM, iirc. Or maybe he just said he supported their right to protest, but it seems to me like he went a little further than that.
Also, if I were intentionally going to drive into a parade of people matching down the middle of the street, I'd have been driving right down the middle of the street for maximum impact. Perp appears to have been in his lane for the most part. My guess is, he was fleeing the scene of some sort of crime and picked a bad day to speed down that particular road. At least I hope that's what it was. I guess I can't fathom purposely running people down for no good reason. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at November 21, 2021 09:48 PM (KrMCC) 686

Oddbob: thanks for the info. My first question isn't: "Why did you have KR testify at trial [obviously in front of the empanneled jury]?, but rather "In a case where there was no evidence of guilt at all, why ask for a jury trial at all?"
I didn't watch the trial or the livestreamed coverage other than some snippets of Steven Crowder, so I am wondering if the Rekeita (sp?) analysts talked about KR testifying, or if they talked about getting the Hell away from a jury completely. All of the whining about KR being interviewed by Carlson is just sour grapes from the MSM fools who called KR a white supremacist and a murderer for 14 months. They'd kill to be the ones interviewing him, but the kid isn't stupid enough to let them.

Braking and swerving wouldn't be completely unusual if a road rage fantasy came up against the reality of killing children. It takes a truly special kinda criminal to cross that line without hesitation. If it's just a local crime though, then I have a hard time figuring out why they were fleeing through the exact middle of downtown, and why they wouldn't jump out and ditch the car rather than run people over. I've been watching in the background with pauses. Lots of stuff Barnes has already said though. Honestly, Lin Wood and company arguing over who gets the $2m bail, months after being tossed off the case by the family, is sketchy at best. Also goes to show that the very first thing anyone should do in a similar situation is find a good accountant and tax attorney that's separate and independent from any initial criminal attorneys. Set up trusts, non-profits for donations, etc. Never, ever let that money stream through a criminal defense lawyer without oversight.
