Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Monday Overnight Open Thread – 11/22/2021He ultimately settled in Michigan, which has an abundance of his buildings. This one is at Wayne State University. Yamasaki’s Northwestern National Life Building in Minneapolis is the epitome of the Yamasaki style. Of course, his most famous work was the World Trade Center. It’s no longer there. When Smalls judged the time was right, he ordered the steamer to leave. The fog was now thinning, and the crew raised two flags. One was the first official Confederate flag, known as the Stars and Bars, and the other was South Carolina’s blue-and-white state flag, which displayed a Palmetto tree and a crescent. Both would help the ship maintain its cover as a Confederate vessel. The Confederate guard stationed about 50 yards away from the Planter saw the ship was leaving, and even moved closer to watch her, but he assumed the vessel’s officers were in command and never raised an alarm. A police detective also saw that the ship was leaving and made the same assumption. Luck seemed to be on Smalls’ side, at least for now. The Planter’s next task was to stop at the North Atlantic Wharf to pick up Smalls’ family and the others. The crew soon reached the North Atlantic Wharf and had no trouble approaching the pier. All had gone as planned, and they were now together. With 16 people on board, and the women and children belowdecks, the Planter resumed her way south toward Confederate Fort Johnson, leaving Charleston and their lives as slaves behind them. At about 4:15 a.m., the Planter finally neared the formidable Fort Sumter, whose massive walls towered ominously about 50 feet above the water. Those on board the Planter were terrified. The only one not outwardly affected by fear was Smalls. “When we drew near the fort every man but Robert Smalls felt his knees giving way and the women began crying and praying again,” With steam and smoke belching from her stacks and her paddle wheels churning through the dark water, the steamer headed straight toward the closest of the Union ships, while her crew rushed to take down the Confederate and South Carolina flags and hoist a white bedsheet to signal surrender.Robert Smalls went on to become a Captain in the US Navy during the Civil War, and after that a US Congressman, and a Customs Collector. He died in 1915. Doehner was 8 years old when he departed Frankfurt, Germany, on May 3, 1937, aboard the colossal zeppelin airship with his parents, Hermann, 50, and Matilde, 41; an elder sister, Irene, 14, and elder brother, Walter, 10. The family lived in North America, where Hermann Doehner was a pharmaceutical executive for a German company in Mexico City. Three days later, the Hindenburg’s 7 million cubic feet of hydrogen erupted into a firestorm as the dirigible attempted to dock at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey on the evening of May 6, 1937. Walter and Werner leapt from the observation windows onto the ground below, with the help of their mother and a ground crew member. Matilde followed. But when it was a reluctant Irene’s turn to jump, either in panic or shock, she attempted to flee into the interior of the burning ship to ostensibly go look for her father, who was likely in the family’s private compartment when the disaster struck. If playing a Musical Saw will make me popular, then sign me up! The extra money sounds good too. I only wish I had known about musical saws during my awkward teenage years when I was trying to stand out from the other guys in my efforts to attract girls. Here’s a lovely version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow played on the musical saw. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Interesting about Yamasaki.
I guess I hadn't paid full attention to the specifics, but I grew up dropping off and picking up my father at that St. Louis terminal throughout the '90s. Northwestern National Life Building in Minneapolis is right there along major bus and bike routes. He also did the Olin Hall of Science at Carleton College in southern Minnesota. All of the campus tour guides were proud to point out the building designed by the WTC guy. #TheMoreYouKnow Posted by: Walter Freeman at November 22, 2021 10:11 PM (+WWsf) 57

One of the buildings at my alma mater Wichita State University was a Frank Lloyd Wright building. He said it was one of his favorite designs and it was built towards the end of his life. Everyone I knew that had classes there or worked there hated it. It was broken into multiple unconnected structures that required you to walk through a courtyard that always froze up in the winter.

I played the piano. And if any of you all think that's not an odd instrument to play then you don't know how to play one.
It is not as easy as it looks. It's one instrument that can never be tuned. It is always slightlly off. Each not is made of 3 strings struck by a hammer and altho one would think that's pretty straight forward, one key down == one note played, that's not the case. Believe it or not but a piano key can be stroked in such a way to give one slightly different notes or harmonics that make a difference besides changing the loudness. Thus to play a piano one almost has to play it like a violin which is to say by ear. It's a very difficult instrument to improvise on also unless one has spent years practicing and playing. I gave it 5 years and barely could play a tune. Anytime you hear or watch a piano solo remember this and don't believe it's so easy anyone can do it. There is a stone yard in Houston, just a block or so each way from the N.E. quadrant of the intersection of I-10 and Beltway 8, on the West side of town. Granite? Yeah, that's maybe ten, fifteen percent of the yard. Architectural Marble? Now you're talkin'. They have some that looks like sweeping galaxies in the night sky. Or wild western desert sunsets. EXOTIC stone, things that are breathtaking in view and in price. Roughly two or three acres of rack after rack, row after row. Bring heavy gloves, a strong back a camera and a notebook. You're not going to memorize the catalog of everything you see, and you're going to see too much to take in at one viewing. The one thing you won't need to bring is your imagination. No electricity, no volatile chemicals, no lightning strikes, and no hay bales (it was already sold to my rancher neighbor), yet it went up in about 3 minutes. It took six fire trucks to put out the 20 acre grass fire as it was trying to run off or our property. We didn't even try to save the 80-year-old hay barn. Good news at last!
July 2020, the company I worked for had to let me go. The fed contract they worked had shriveled due to excessive coofness, and the whole division ceased to exist. It was a great company that treated me well and kept me as long as they could - I was almost literally the last person out the door - and said that if they ever got another contract similar to what I had worked, they would gladly have me back. I was unemployed for a while, and then ended up in a job in the same industry - a much lower-end job with much lower-end pay. Then, my previous company called me last week. New contract, and they want me in on the ground floor of it, at a bit more money than I made for them previously. Feelin' groovy, and wanted to share. If a structure is insulated well enough and work active stuff is going on inside you don't have to worry about heating it. You actually just have to worry about cooling it always. I worked in an office that was suspended above a factory floor and the office didn't have a heating system just AC for the summer and a vent to exchange air in the winter. One winter the vent broke. It was in the single digits outside and 85-90 in the office. We were sweating like pigs and they allowed us to wear shorts and t-shirts until the system got fixed.

Had an interesting day, attended a formal military funeral at Arlington National Cemetery which was beautifully done. Sun came out and it was a beautiful day except for the wind chill.
The Old Guard performed flawlessly, but one side note: There was a seven man rifle squad and at one point in the service they fired three volleys. I listened very carefully, because I was convinced there was only one rifle firing although they were rather loud volleys. I figured they were saving money and using only one bullet per volley. I simply could not detect any staggering of the volleys; but at the end of the ceremony, a rifle man came over and handed one of the sons a black bag containing 21 fired shell casings as part of the ceremony. So the amazing thing to me was that the rifle squad was so perfectly synchronized in three seven shot volleys I never heard a perceptible delay among the shots. Those guys are amazing! The wake was rather nice as well. RIP my friend! Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar (hOUT3) ~ Lie back and think of the sweet graft! ~ at November 22, 2021 10:56 PM (hOUT3) 349

I'm gonna put in some guesstimations here. 110K gross is about 4230 every 2 weeks or so (26 pay periods). Take out about a third for taxes, bennies, etc, leaving about 3200. Unless it's a blue state then take out half, leaving about 2115. Mortgage on a 500K house with 20% down at 3.1% for 30 years is about 2100. So, tight, but it's only most of one paycheck. So they're probably getting some interest only variable rate monstrosity because they're planning on bailing in less than five years anyways. Posted by: Blanco Basura - moronhorde.com. "I'll be very disappointed if Miklos can't play the Cimbalom."
My grandfather played that. He also played the violin and trumpet. He was a talented musician who gave up a good job at the Railroad to play music during the Depression. They almost lost the house and my grandmother almost lost her mind. Pop-pop was a character. He was gassed at the second Battle of the Marne in the Great War, and was put on a ship to return stateside (presumably to die). On board, they asked for volunteers who knew how to type. While he was doing that he found his orders and changed them to be sent home. Later he met and married my grandmother, but not before joining a movement to support priests being able to marry and got himself excommunicated from the Church and disinherited by his father. The Church took him back, but his father never did. Posted by: Miley, the Duchess - #SuperStraight at November 22, 2021 11:21 PM (Mzdiz) 458

Alternately a Russian stove (Pech) , either the full giant bed ones or the smaller masonry mass heater. (Who among us has not wanted a Winter cabin with a bed built on top of a wood burning fireplace?) Of course if you are trying to make magic be engineering, I would look at Maxwell's demons sort of thing, or accelerated bacterial decay - my compost can get pretty hot by itself and magic might make it turbcharged. You guys are overthinking this. Not all blue state home buyers are first time buyers. Some of us move around in the region. I have multiple times. And some in my town have been here for generations. They bought the land and house when it was peanuts. I have been here for only a few years and in my case my home is appraised at 56% more than what I paid for it and I came from an area where I sold my home after a similar increase. The pace has accelerated but homes here have increased in value every year for a very long time. Many people aren't just putting down 20% and taking an enormous mortgage. I had a rough morning, went couch shopping and felt a bit sick/queasy. Figured I needed to eat since all I had was coffee. Finally ate some lunch but still queasy. Anywho, wound up throwing up. Felt better after that. I think it was a combo of taking a tramadol last night, having insomnia, taking my morning meds on an empty stomach with just coffee, and my husband's driving. But I got a couch, paid too much for it and still have to wait 2-4 weeks for delivery. Yeah, Miley, that's awesome. Most of the music I've heard on it sort of has the musical feel of bagpipes. Drone note, but much more complexity. Such goodness.

All reality TV lies. I had a friend who was on one of the those H&G reality shows where they have to pick a house they want to buy and then there is drama as work gets done to the house, or whatever.
The show concocted his entire family, lied about the fact that he was buying the house (in fact, he had already bought it), and then goaded them into some fake drama about the contracting work. House Hunters is almost certainly much the same thing. Posted by: Revenant at November 22, 2021 11:37 PM (UelxP) 550

On the topic of instruments, i saw that Dune movie, and they used bagpipes as the marching music for house Atreides.... but the drone notes were nothing like a Scottish or Irish bagpipe. Sounded powerful and effective but yet weirdly alien...i thought it was a brilliant little touch.

Good point. I'm a decent rhythm guitarist. Never got into lead guitar / solos until recently. Since WuFlu, I've spent more time on that. I know several riffs now -- mostly intros. Layla, Over The Hills and Far Away, Do You Feel Like We Do, Crazy on You, more. A bunch of 80s alternative stuff. Oh - and Breakin' The Law.
Posted by: Doof at November 22, 2021 11:06 PM (mZUr4) I think the whole lead/solo thing kinda happens naturally. After you get bored of just doing rhythm, and as you come across songs with more and more melody notes that you start playing its just a short jump to solos from there. For a fantasy story I'm writing, I'm trying to figure out how to heat houses inside of trees (think hollowed-out redwoods). My engineer brain wants to come up with blueprints, my writer brain is telling it to shut up and leave things to readers' imaginations. (Maybe one chapter total takes place there, so my writer brain is winning out.)
Posted by: pookysgirl wonders when the cat brain will chime in at November 22, 2021 10:34 PM (XKZwp) I dug up a postcard that I bought when we were at an archeological excavation in Vuollerim in northern Sweden. It shows a reconstruction of a communal hut (partially underground) from 6000 years ago. An air intake feeds a fire near the end of the hut, with a tunnel that leads the smoke out and upward. Maybe you can use that idea to come up with a plausible description for your hollow trees. Posted by: Miley, the Duchess - #SuperStraight at November 23, 2021 12:01 AM (Mzdiz) 646

I think restaurants did stay closed for several weeks, and they did (and still do) enforce the mask thing at the hospital and clinics, but no other places ever enforced it and the only people I see wearing masks are either extremely old, or are obvious transplants from up north. They didn't even shut the schools down after the first two weeks, and probably wouldn't have done so at all but for the Federal funding. Aetius451AD , and don't think, because this car has electric windows and a chrome switch that this is some kind of effeminate vehicle. This is a man's car.

In no world is that engine growl not 'cool' Jay (Leno.) Not if you have any testosterone left in your body.

Jay Leno's Garage, 1964 Dodge Polara
https://tinyurl.com/2bkkbauu I like it. Although the roof pillars always make me laugh on the older cars. Posted by: Aetius451AD at November 23, 2021 01:13 AM (csEWM) Nice. 426 street wedges are frigging cool. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at November 23, 2021 01:34 AM (VwHCD) 729
Kinda funny that somebody "updated" the red Dodge with the little side marker lights. Probably a semi-good story behind that mod.

Hey Farmer, hope all is well with you and yours and you are feeling good. I'm sorry for your family's recent loss.
Posted by: CaliGirl at November 23, 2021 01:00 TY CaliGirl and all. Losing Jules' parents was just made so much harder w/ the idiotic covid restrictions. Which basically meant we couldn't see Jo or Jerry once they went in the health care section. I'd like to raise some hell about how residents are treated but J and her sister really just want to close it all down and forget it. I understand that, but I'm not so inclined. ROFL, just saw this, from Australia. The Sheilas are looking for a few good, purespooge men: https://mobile.twitter.com/clif_high/ status/1462554394713485313 Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at November 23, 2021 01:48 AM (Mzdiz) 732
Just readind. Brandon is going to blame businesses for rising inflation. It's not the govt's fault, it's those dirty businesses out there price gouging. We're following the 3rd World banana republic playbook. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at November 23, 2021 01:50 AM (Mzdiz) 733

I'm sure those Sheilas would be good for a quick gobby or wristy, maybe let you cop a cheeky root. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at November 23, 2021 02:06 AM (Mzdiz) 738
Quite a set of diverse guest posts today. All interesting, though I haven't commented on any except this'un. Nonetheless, I shall attempt to comment on each thread.
Pixy -- I did comment there, about how the Aussies pussied out on the English measurement system. Morning Report -- I still haven't visited any of his links, but his commentary was superb. As usual. Art Thread -- Looks like a rock, not a root cellar. Morning Rant -- As usual, I had no clue Who Dis. CBd (and Ace's take!) on the Jonah Whaleberg thingy at Fox. The Paolo, he's gonna have to up his watching fees, now that Jonah has moar free time to watch his wife getting railed. Also, who the fuck is Steve Hayes? Can he remove chrome from a bumper using only his mouth? Muldoon is one sharp cookie. Buck explains shit to the dummies running corporations. Jay Guevara calls our just us system as a bad joke. On us. Con't 1/2 Posted by: GnuBreed at November 23, 2021 02:18 AM (F0YaR) 739

2/2 Ace comes back from retirement for a week for a second bite at the apple that is Fux News. The early guesses were correct; he couldn't resist a victory lap or two around Jonah's corpulent corpse-thinking. I hope he washed up afterwards.
Homeschooling -- For The Win. I went to public schools, 18 of them to be exact by HS graduation, the result of a military brat life. But I entered the 1st grade able to read, due to diligent parents. Jokes -- I suck at them, though my snark is greatly improved. Productivity -- I'm retired. And busy. Buck takes another bite at the Ace apple, about conformity and shit. There's a reason we call Ace 'The Boss', besides his ownership of this blog. Finally, the ONT. Good job, Buck. Posted by: GnuBreed at November 23, 2021 02:29 AM (F0YaR) 742

The sound of the musical saw is surprisingly similar to Theremin, where you don't even have to touch the instrument. Sounds like '50s Sci-Fi!
And the musical saw also reminds me the movie "Delicatessen", one of my personal cults. Posted by: Anacleto Mitraglia at November 23, 2021 03:51 AM (pqKQr) 747
Smalls was so brave he murdered the crew of the tug while they slept in their bunks. A trusted crew member, Smalls returned that trust by slitting their throats.
Much like the Antifa and BLM folks we see demonstrating their bravery today and at Xmas parades. This reminds me of the NYT printing the Wisconsin terrorism attack on page A22 today. Nice going laddie. Posted by: Harry at November 23, 2021 05:54 AM (EcD5Y) 748
Abby The Spoon Lady should get a feller to accompany her on the musical saw.

A nignog murders many White people. The response here is more magic negro bullshit.
Here's one of the retarded shit goblins that write for this site defending Liberalism. Conservatives are just liberals from a few years as ever was and as ever will be. These faggot pussies will never fight. These faggot pussies can only ever surrender because they worship at the same altar as their enemies. These same people will the use bayonet to make sure Tyrone can rape and murder your children. Just look at they way this place has treated that anti-White attack in Waukesha last night versus George Floyd and BLM. Absolutely retarded cowardly conservatives will only ever fellate the left because they still fear being called racists while White people are under violent attack.
