Homeschooling: Even Better Than You Think (Part 1) [Bluebell]

Homeschool22.jpeg

When I was in second grade I saw a photo like this in my textbook, and thought I would never get to see this place in person. I took this photo on our first cross-country trip.

My first homeschool post was meant to encourage those of you with school-aged children to REALLY consider homeschooling. You know all the reasons why you might not want your child in public school any longer, but I’d like to point out some benefits of homeschooling that you may not have thought of. Of course we all know the most obvious benefit is that you get to pick the curriculum and get away from all that stuff that the state thinks your kid ought to know about, but that you are sure your kid should NOT know about. But wait, there’s more! So much more. Here are some of the many benefits of homeschooling, in no particular order.

Family unity

Homeschooling brings a family together like nothing else. Literally, of course, because you are with your children all day. But also because you and your children really get to know each other. I’m not saying it’s always sunshine, happiness, and rainbows everywhere, but your children really will learn to get along. The older ones help with the younger ones, and even young children learning to read like reading to the baby (who is just happy to be read to). And you will be able to spot trouble when it’s brewing instead of when it overflows.

Travel when you like

After only a few years of homeschooling, I became spoiled. I learned that I never, ever want to travel anywhere during its high season again. The beach is gorgeous (and cheaper, and less crowded) in the middle of September. Go on the mountain hike with the kids during the week when the wildflowers are blooming in the spring, instead of on the weekend with everyone else. We’ve done cross-country trips in the fall where we are the only people in a small museum, or staying at a bed and breakfast, and we never had to circle around places looking for a parking place at popular national parks. Traveling off-season can yield significant financial savings, as well as less crowded attractions. And you may find yourself fulfilling a life-long dream of seeing Mt. Rushmore!

Kids (and you) get enough sleep

How often do your kids bring home a cold (or worse) from school? And how often do they (and you) stay up late doing homework or studying for a test? Although my kids got exposed to plenty of germs from our outside activities, they rarely got sick, and I attribute that to their being able to sleep as much as they needed. I let my kids sleep until they woke up naturally most days, unless we had to be somewhere early. As long as we got our work done, I really didn’t care when exactly we started. I let myself get extra rest too if I wasn’t feeling great. The kids never minded starting school later than usual, for some reason. As for getting the work done, they knew what they needed to get done, and they had plenty of time during the day to get it all finished. If they didn’t, they needed to finish at night. That rarely happened, until they were high school age and had outside classes.

More leisurely evenings

My kids all played sports, year-round. Like the other families, we had to fit in dinner and sports practice and/or games during the week. But unlike their teammates, my kids never had to come back home and study for a test or finish their homework afterwards. I remember standing with parents at Little League games sympathizing with them while they bemoaned the SOLs (Standards of Learning tests in Virginia administered to public school students in certain grades) that their kids were facing the next day and the studying they still had to finish up when they got home. Our hectic nights were oceans of calm compared to theirs.

Have I piqued your interest? Want to know more? Stay tuned for Part 2!

16 The one thing that I've learned - and that is making us lean toward it, and we'll likely take the plunge in the next year (which I don't know how that will influence my run for school board) - is that what my kid could learn in 15 minutes and move on to the next topic is required to be taught for three weeks, and taught in sixteen different ways. And the kid is required to show that they can do the sixteen different WAYS, and not just come up with the correct answer when asked.

They're purposely slowing education down and creating make-work environments. F*ck that.

As home schooling becomes a bit more mainstream, it will be a little self-selective in terms of achievers - right - on average? The answer is fairly obvious.

23 I'm so glad my kids are out of school. I do worry about grandkids. One in particular is "depressed" according to his mother... likely a result of the bullshit masking that has been foisted on him. Home schooling is out of the question for him right now and if his mother had the means a private school would probably be a good option.

My kid works four days of the week (to do five days of school work), and has Fridays off. He likes it that way, and gets lots of sleep at night, as well as enough time for undirected play, which is an additional benefit. A side benefit is that he has the opportunity to interact with adults and children of different ages, rather than being corralled into an artificial construct of learning to socialize with other 12-year-olds, who are trying to learn themselves. That's a big one for me.

38 I've home schooled. This post is 100% why I loved it. I moved my oldest to an online high school after my 2nd oldest asked to try out public school in 7th grade. She went on to immediately run for school government and try every after school program she wanted. My oldest completed his HS diploma and was recruited into the Navy as a Nuc. (He didn't end up there as they found a medical dis qualifier while he was in RTC) My 2nd is now becoming an accountant. Neither have had many issues with socialization or social interaction. My 3rd is on the spectrum and is online for HS, but has formed great friends through church. Not all families are cut out for full home schooling but if you are, it's wonderful.

40 Yeah. Our oldest is doing well. We really like that we can go camping whenever and not have to time it around school.

We are not currently planning to homeschool the youngest, but that's because he's extremely social. Yes, we COULD do it if we got together with other families and had him socialize with their kids...but then WE would have to be social. We are thinking about a local Montessori school for him.

45 Thank you so much for posting this.

I believe that doing Homeschooling will be the best move and perhaps the only move that we can make at this time that will really impact our children's education.

The Unions will either change the way they do things or go after the Homeschoolers. (I'm betting they'll try to make it illegal or so difficult to apply for/allow by the state)

Either way there will be fights and they will be public ones and not behind the closed doors of the politburo like conference rooms most School Boards have had built for themselves. (ain't it amazing how they all mostly look alike and look like a tribunal scene from some dystopian movie where the protagonist gets tried for his bad thought and action)

Bless you for homeschooling your kids and for encouraging others to do so.

47 A family from our homeschool group - yes, there are such things, and the kids are very socialized, respectful, and caring - spent 8 or so years on the road in a fifth-wheel with three young children. Finally, on the fourth, with a toddler, they decided to buy land and build. The visited national parks in the lower 48 as part of their homeschool education. Another family flips houses, and it is truly a family affair.

50 Vmom, I would tell young parents that if they can raise their child, which presumably they are doing, they can homeschool. If they start with kindergarten, it's super easy. It takes no more than an hour a day at that age, and it doesn't have to be in one sitting.

If they pull kids out of school, that's fine too. The kids will have an adjustment period, of course. There are many, many homeschooling books that talk about this, probably many at the local library.

54 One thing I think we can all agree on:

- The kids of rightie parents, when homeschooled, will get a real, well-rounded education on the basics, including the bases of Western Civilization.

- The kids of lefty parents, when homeschooled, will learn nothing but hateful propaganda and how to be destructive.

When the time comes for these people to join the job market, guess who will get all the best jobs?

Posted by: qdpsteve at November 22, 2021 05:36 PM (L2ZTs)

55 No kids but for families wondering "can we afford this?" I recently got a raise at work. over 450 more per time period for gross pay. Less than 280 more for net pay. Plus daycare when little or as after school, hidden costs, like much harder to get by with just one commuter vehicle if both parents work, the extra gas and insurance etc etc. I think a full budget of what it costs for the 'free' schooling would be eye opening.

And if you love your work and have a good private school option thats great.

Colorado has a neat program where charter schools, including online charter schools are funded. If you can't imagine coming up with the curriculum and everything online charters are probably a good introductory option.

63 Sometimes I'm glad I never had kids (not often) but the state of today's schools is certainly one. Public schools were still good in CA when I was there, but the writing was on the wall, certainly.

It's odd, in spite of the SF bay area being so secular and anti-Christian, that there's an enormous waiting list for the growing Christian schools in the area. It's as close as you can get to a private school with a lower cost. The private middle schools I'm familiar with are about $70k/year.

One thing that CA has done right is allow for charter schools to flourish, they've certainly got my support. Especially when I see middle and high schoolers leaving for the day, and what's passing for "kids" coming from Nicaragua/Honduras and points north.

If you understand the difference between heterogeneous grouping and homogeneous grouping and the 'zone of proximal development' as it relates to the two groupings, you'll understand why you want to home school, and why.

It's not rocket science. You want your child sitting next to his peer group, like your own education experience. Circa 2021, the school wants your child sitting next to the worst child in the school to raise him/her up, while lowering your own child's education.

It's pathetic and most certainly not in the best interest of the country.

82 A thought I have had:

I would never wish to return to the pre industrial caste system of men and women in separate spheres, where women were denied equality in vocations. But one benefit of a society where women are only allowed a small sliver of acceptable jobs, like teacher, is that the most whip smart, independent women of the day went into teaching, and their pupils benefited as a result. Once more jobs were open to women they fled to those and lowered the available number of good female teachers.

Having only the most whip-smart of teachers in public schools is definitely no longer a problem.

(This is not a knock to the good teachers in the Horde! You are valued and you bless those around you!)

110 "Kids (and you) get enough sleep

How often do your kids bring home a cold (or worse) from school? And how often do they (and you) stay up late doing homework or studying for a test?"

This, for crying out loud. Much better than going to school at the asscrack of dawn just because some other parents' kids needs to peak at 18 chasing a fucking ball around, and dragging home every fucking sniffle that passes through the school.

I can't take anyone seriously unless they're homeschooling or making serious efforts to enable homeschooling in the future. Dual-income fueled gewgaws have been used to string along well-meaning normies for far too long.

It broke my heart to watch a former coworker with kids significantly older than mine... I watched them grow up, go off to school, then come back and lecture him about his privilege. Maybe they'll learn some day - maybe they won't. And I've lost a ton of family members to university indoctrination. We're talking change-their-pronouns-west-coast-hobo level shit.

Colleges have to, by law, keep stats on any cases of rape, sexual assault, fondling, gun violence, etc. reported to authorities and document it every year. You can look up these reports for free.

Why do we not do this for K-12 schools? It would probably be eye opening, as long as you get students to report. Would help parents see what is going on in their schools. Or is letting parents actually know what is going on in their schools the problem the government must avoid at all costs?

121 I like the homeschooling movement. And the more public schools trot out crap like "but socialization", the more I roll my eyes at them.

Going to a public school is very simply playing the lottery. In elementary school (example) my fourth-grade teacher was absolutely bloody amazing, and my third-grade teacher wasn't bad. The rest were just there to get a paycheck. (My fifth grade teacher was an evil tyrant who insisted I wouldn't get past sixth grade with my handwriting. Well, I got an M.A. now...) For the money we pay, why aren't ALL the teachers amazing and top-notch?

122 >>> I let my kids sleep until they woke up naturally most days, unless we had to be somewhere early. As long as we got our work done, I really didn't care when exactly we started.

This hints at another benefit. Our kids are learning to self-direct their work at a much younger age than I thought would be reasonable. They know the tradeoffs between dragging your feet on an assignment, goofing off and not getting anything done, and having time for extracurricular activities.

Then they lived in Pt Townsend for a couple of weeks - helped haul out the boat, put up scaffolding, sanded and painted, helped with repairs and then led crews of public-school attending scouts who could come up on the weekends.

159 Thanks again for posting on this subject, bluebell.

People had mentioned Montessori - we liked the Montessori early childhood program a lot. Because they're really obsessed with the "method" there, and because Maria Montessori was from the before times, it seems pretty safe from the poisonous ideologies.

(For all I know MM was a socialist herself, but the curriculum is about normal stuff, not race/gender insanity, and they really do stick to it.)

Many homeschool groups have co-ops, and math is a popular subject. There are also online courses, and when the student is old enough, community college courses. I took my kids through Algebra 2 and then turned them over to the cc for pre-calc and calc and stats, which also got them college credits.

That's what the curriculum is for. My kids learned "Math-U-See" from videos and workbooks (and plastic blocks). Two of them went all the way up to Pre-Calc (I got a D in algebra), but the curriculum goes even higher.

There is curriculum out there for literally every subject.

=====

It's also overkill! Get the kids in a couple of activities, and they will have plenty of time to figure out how to deal with other children. They don't need thirty hours a week of it.

Also, the kids at scouts or sports or church are better supervised and under better control than the kids in the government school.

And that's just the kids! You also have to account for the teachers. A solid minority of them are *also* sadistic bullies.

172 16 The one thing that I've learned - and that is making us lean toward it, and we'll likely take the plunge in the next year (which I don't know how that will influence my run for school board) - is that what my kid could learn in 15 minutes and move on to the next topic is required to be taught for three weeks, and taught in sixteen different ways. And the kid is required to show that they can do the sixteen different WAYS, and not just come up with the correct answer when asked.

They're purposely slowing education down and creating make-work environments. F*ck that.

These are the things that matter the most. They're the reason why public schooling was instituted in the first place, and they're what the SATs are based on.

We homeschooled our four children. They all went to college. I'm not sure how "awkward" they are. It's my impression that home schooled kids are often markedly socially advanced over their peers, particularly when it comes to relating to adults. Interestingly, two chose to become public school teachers.

Having said that, not every parent is cut out for homeschooling. We saw some dismaying examples.

I think I get why, but I also think of all the books from which I learned to love reading that were not purely educational, were just fun. Where the wild things are, the cat in the hat, etc. Some of the best books are just about the joy of bringing words to life for a young kid, and that is ok.

As I tell a lot of people, you can do it for a day, a week, a month, a year, or the whole time. Schools have to take you back so you have nothing to lose...and everything to gain.

I just saw a tweet from somebody from Sweden posting the interior of a shopping mall. No masks, kids lined up to sit on Santa's lap, place was packed. For some reason, they've not had a "spike" and are practically covid free. Gee, maybe there's something to that whole herd/exposure immunity thing that twatter/fb/goolag keep censoring? It used to be sort of a thing for about a century all the way up until 2020.

Getting into college is largely dependent upon the school. The University of Texas makes it very difficult. Texas A&M made it relatively easy though we had a few bumps there too. But we are 2 for 2 kids applying to TAMU.

231 One thing I want to mention about why my kids have loved homeschooling - every year, I tried to make sure they were doing or learning something they wanted.

One year, that involved me running a monthly field trip group for extra homeschoolers (who got to enjoy all my work) to all the area museums/attractions.
One year, that was starting a movie club (again, that I ran and other homeschoolers enjoyed).
One year, that was taking a class all year in stage combat.
One year, it was doing a unit study on cats and dogs (with trips to the animal shelter and the K9 unit).
One year, it was finding a local Japanese tutor so we could study HS Japanese...etc, etc...
My kids knew that I tailored the main subjects (Math and Language Arts were always happening), but they had a lot of say in what they could learn, when, and how...and they really enjoyed the process...

Posted by: bluebell at November 22, 2021 06:30 PM (wyw4S)

235 I homeschooled. I wasn't good at it. I still think that it was probably best for my kids because I don't know and can't know if my raging ADD would have made classroom education for the kids just as difficult or even moreso. Elementary with kids in school seems like just as much of a full time job as homeschooling them and I'd have been just as ADD.

They did all turn out well enough. They'd have been better off with some structure, though. But we also moved several times so if we'd have been with the first homeschool group we were in and without the disruption, I might not have had as much trouble.

And I say this mostly to say, it was STILL a good idea and I'm not sorry we did.

Hi TV! I'm sure there are homeschooled kids who could benefit from your expertise. The easiest way would be to ask any homeschoolers you know. If you don't know any, maybe do a search on local homeschool groups in your area - they will usually have an email address for contact purposes and you can go from there.

If you belong to a church you might ask people there if they know any homeschoolers, too. There may be an electronic newsletter for homeschoolers in your area that posts classes and teacher openings. Good luck, and thank you for wanting to teach these kids!

249 I homeschooled 4 kids all the way through. One is in the US Navy, one is a high school mathematics teacher at a private school, one is at University studying Civil Engineering and one is at University studying Hotel/Restaurant Management.

Your homeschool kids do not have to be socially awkward......... put them in outside activities. Mine did martial arts, swimming lessons, church activities, painting classes, pottery, etc. And sleepovers with the kids at church. And two weeks of summer camp at the ocean.

We also did off-season vacations including two trips to Disney World (in late Sept and January) and a car-trip across the country and back in a mini-van......we were already close, but spending 24 days in a mini-van together really does cement-bond an already well-bonded family!

Posted by: vmom - link to Red's fundraiser at November 22, 2021 05:31 PM (YZG/i)

OK, here's my go at that (homeschooled until my son was 16, when he insisted - to his regret - on going to public school)...

First, contact the Homeschool Legal Defense Association. They exist to defend homeschoolers in the legal realm, but they will happily put you in touch with your state or regional homeschool association(s). This way you have a place to start with contacts.

Second, start searching online for co-ops. These exist in big and small form, depending on your area. They often have retired teachers organizing them and teaching at them, but not always. There may be one based on music or the arts (very common) but it will still have the value of being a bunch of fellow homeschoolers.
/tbc

Posted by: GWB at November 22, 2021 06:56 PM (Gcsm/)

261 continued...

Third, go to a convention. They might not have them in your area, and (of course) are once a year, so this isn't your first step. But, you will find curricula, coaching, legal workshops, inspirational talks, and LOTS of other people just like you (though often totally different) who are willing to talk or listen or give you their opinion of what works for them.

You can talk to the publishers of curricula and other books. (That's how we got into Right Start Math. We spent a half hour talking to the writer of it.) You can even walk between stalls and compare the different books. You can find planner systems. You can find the Mennonites selling all kinds of foodstuff basics for making your own bread and all sorts of things. (Hey, yeast is a whole biology study unto itself! And edible!)

So, call HSLDA, find some co-ops, and hie thee to a convention!

Not generally, though your state might allow it. There's usually some sneaky bit in the law about only applying to those enrolled in college, or being over 18. But do ask the question! It's part of what sets the homeschooler apart.

Posted by: Cow Demon - Free Australia! at November 22, 2021 06:02 PM (CdZ4i)

Curricula, co-ops, online schooling systems.
In that order.

If you pick a curriculum because it helps you actually get it, then you get to learn right along with (or just ahead of) your kid. If that's not doable, find a co-op with a math class - lots of retired math teachers out there willing to teach for a few bucks and not having to put up with administrators. Then you can always pick an online curriculum that knows what it's doing, and let them grade and track the kid's progress. (And you still might learn right along with the kid.)

273 We homeschooled our kids, then they attended an early college program for high school. One is a programmer and the other is a dietician. Both walked straight into jobs after college graduation. It worked for us. It takes hard work and commitment.

One of the best pieces of advice we received when we began homeschooling was that we wouldn't feel competent or at peace for about three years. They were right, but we kept at it and it worked. Finding a curriculum that's a good fit is essential.

274 So I was a college-educated homeschool mom with 100% support from my college-educated husband so I wasn't intimidated, but a lot of mom's don't have mathy-sciencey college degrees and they lack confidence. The one thing I wish I had done was to use my local community college more for math and science classes...... they do a great job at bonehead math, statistics, algebra, geometry, trig, and even calculus and basic biology and chemistry that works great for high-schoolers and earns them college credit. And I just powered through, when I didn't need to.

Posted by: Monica at November 22, 2021 09:05 PM (mViXK)

275 When homeschooling, a lot of the "membership" deals offered to families suddenly make immense sense. For about the price of two Saturday admission to the zoo, for instance, you get a year-long pass. Free parking, week day afternoons when it's not crowded, come and see ONE exhibit, and plan to come back. Take a picnic lunch and spend some time watching just the lemurs leap. Do the "members only" events if you want.

Same thing for a museum. Instead of cramming everything into a long long day, come and go. Whenever you like.

Some memberships in one thing -- a Dallas zoo -- may get reciprocal admission at another -- the aquarium in San Antonio.

Family "fun" (even the educational kind) can be cheaper by buying in bulk.

276 the thing they all hated the most.... was probably Wordly-Wise Vocabulary..... they all did it all the way through 12th grade, got them great grades on the SAT, I am amazed at their vocablulalry, to this day. We have very interesting discussions at the dinner table now that they are all in their 20's. The class I think was the most impactful, honestly, was rote memorization of poetry, Shakespeare and catechism. They also memorized on their own great chunks of LOTR, Star Wars, music, Elf, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Zoolander and Forest Gump.

Posted by: Monica at November 22, 2021 09:21 PM (mViXK)

277 I loved being homeschooled. I hate homeschooling. It's frustrating and mind numbing. It makes me want to lock my bedroom door and cry in my closet for hours.
It makes me hate my kids.
I'm on my second attempt, since I have no alternatives at all. During the 2019/20 school year I was fighting with my 7yr old's teacher who had decided that if she couldn't teach my stubborn daughter, no one was allowed to. She refused to consider my child moving to another classroom, nor my mother in law (an experienced home teacher and helper) coming in to keep my daughter in line.
So it was actually a relief to have kids sent home for rest of the year and get all of them back into the local co-op.
It's so much better for them, for all the reasons given, but I really wish people wouldn't say "Everyone can homeschool". Sure most people can, at this point you could do absolutely nothing and still be a massive improvement on the public schools. I suppose I'm moderately successful, too, but it's so miserable.
I'm so tired of it. I wish I had something local that was a mix, but they don't exist.
