Root Cellar
Jamie Wyeth

It's easy to see the father's influence on the son's art. Whether that is a good thing depends on your feelings about Andrew Wyeth.

I would never point out that Andrew Wyeth may be the greatest American artist of the 20th century, because that might influence your opinion.

But...Andrew Wyeth may be the greatest American artist of the 20th century!

20 A root cellar (American English) or earth cellar (British English) is a structure, usually underground or partially underground, used for storage of vegetables, fruits, nuts, or other foods. Its name reflects the traditional focus on root crops stored in an underground cellar, which is still often true.

"[On Tuesday] large teams of heavily armed federal agents, using a battering ram to break down doors, raided the homes of Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters and several of her friends and colleagues, mostly elderly women in their mid 60s," read a statement released Wednesday by Peters' legal defense fund. "This is a level of weaponization of the Justice Department we haven't seen since the McCarthy era. 204 "I saw Wheel of Time. It was only 3 episodes. I guess that's how they do pilots now. Rosemund Pike was good. Everything else was ok."

Saw the first episode. I remember when I watched the "It" made for TV miniseries thinking, "Why'd they do that instead of just following the story?" All the pointless changes that served no purpose. They did a lot of that in Wheel of Time.

It also is a very obvious "diversity" pick for the cast and they smutted up the Three Rivers story. The entire point was a simple, innocent, close knit community that was destroyed by real world events. Even if they weren't going to be white, they should have been homogenous and not been throwing in the smut. It was just awkward, missed the point, and doesn't bode well for the future.

212 Until voters decide that crime is important enough to ensure the vote this will be the mess we are in. Large cities, like Chicago, the Alderman and Dem machine coordinate with the gangs for votes... and other voting related activities.. no surprise that they are moving to help. Used to be they'd just make a call to the local police commander to slow down the investigation.. now it's just setting them free.
Not a bunch of volunteers on the Republican side to observe the election on Chicago's south side wards, nor the West side. I assume that's the same for Philly and their 100% Dem vote results..

The 13 assholes can make a case for voting for the infrastructure bill. Now it will be a poor one since that bullshit bill contained very little infrastructure and a lot of left wing wet dreams, but that aside. They can not justify voting for it without an iron clad written guarantee that there would be NO social infrastructure bill. THAT was their major mistake and the mistake of the RINO Moron Senators that crafted that "compromise" infrastructure bill. They, as usual, got taken to the cleaners

That's probably a piece of trivia that passed through my head at one point.

1941 is underrated. It was also almost directed by Robert Zemeckis, but Zemeckis' box office record as director was dismal. The studio would only trust the large budget in the hands of a more practiced and established hand, so they got Zemeckis' mentor, Spielberg, to direct.

What you *might* save in spending on gasoline, you are going to more than make up for in massive service/maintenance costs. Because so much shit is packed into the underhood that it's impossible to reach anything for service without dropping the powertrain. Which is massive time and cost. And god forbid you need to have any of the EV components replaced. Everyone better start a maintenance fund for themselves if they ever purchase an EV.

Nothing confirmed about that. BUT, the proximity to Kenosha, the fact that it was barely two days since the verdict and the vermin in question is a BLM supporter and Trump hater would indicate that this is a reasonable assumption.

They switched that to EV just this past spring. Solely because of the government regulations and fines we'll face in 2025. I think they were holding out hope that Trump would be re-elected and he'd continue with loosening the CAFE standards. So much for that.

441 336 Also, my job right now is to develop the underhood design integration for a future EV. All I will say is that the service costs for doing anything on EVs is going to be massive.

Anyone remember the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car?

It was essentially a long series of interviews with Hollywood actors about an electric concept car they were allowed to lease from Ford in the early 00s. They all loved it so much, and when Ford took repossession of the cars, they were crestfallen.

I didn't see how a bunch of rich Hollywood actors loving an electric car without any real concept of how much it cost (to the point that Ford decided it wasn't worth it) was supposed to inspire me to demand electric vehicles.

499 Exactly. It too me 12 horrifying hours in Katrina to get 100 miles away from town. In a very short time, the battery in an EV would have been flatter than Greta's chest.

504 If you live in an urban setting EV's might be the only type of vehicle permitted in the not so distant future. Of course then you'll have to decide if you want to charge it or cook dinner. Electricity credits won't cover both.

505 Anyone remember the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car?

It was essentially a long series of interviews with Hollywood actors about an electric concept car they were allowed to lease from Ford in the early 00s. They all loved it so much, and when Ford took repossession of the cars, they were crestfallen.

I didn't see how a bunch of rich Hollywood actors loving an electric car without any real concept of how much it cost (to the point that Ford decided it wasn't worth it) was supposed to inspire me to demand electric vehicles.

You mentioning it triggered my memory about the story and first thing was that you are misremembering the manufacturer. And yep, it was the General Motors EV-1

Posted by: A Scold of Karens at November 22, 2021 11:25 AM (dQvv7)

507 Yep. And I think this was back in 2018 when we were shown this presentation. At the time, I was still working to package an ICE powertrain on my program. They switched that to EV just this past spring. Solely because of the government regulations and fines we'll face in 2025. I think they were holding out hope that Trump would be re-elected and he'd continue with loosening the CAFE standards. So much for that.

You want to make electric cars work? Shitcan the "rechargeable" batteries. Design a cheap standardized "disposable" battery that doesn't use scarce and expensive metals in its chemistry, zinc/air maybe. Go with one or two standardized form factors that fit all cars, just like "D" cells fit all "D" cell flashlights. You buy a battery, slot it in, and drive it until it goes dead, say 500 miles. Then you slide it out, buy a fresh battery, and carry on. Used batteries go back to the factory to be recycled into new ones.

He did that as well. I have seen some very impressive examples of his egg tempera. Tempura is a Japanese dish.

512 Are there any figures out on what the maintenance costs of the current EVs on the roads are? They've been out long enough so we should know. I remember people who bought Teslas, for instance, saying that they were maintenance-free. I told them to wait five years.

Posted by: Darrell Harris at November 22, 2021 11:11 AM

That's a great question. I'm going to follow-up with my service engineering contacts at work when I am back from my vacation next week and see if they have any of that info. I know I asked program management about this sort of data back when we had the EV presentation. I know they said it existed, but I never had anyone follow-up with me on that. (not surprising) But the service engineering guys I work with are great. Hopefully they'll have some benchmarking data. I'll find out next week.

That was GM, not Ford, and the car was the EV-1, and the participants knew right from the get-go that their use of the car was going to have an end date. The car wasn't "killed" because it was never "born" as a production vehicle.
