Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread – 11/21/2021We can’t all have the game of a Bower Bird, but we’ve all done some crazy things to attract or be with a potential mate. Do y’all have any embarrassing stories you’re willing to share? Maybe a dad who really wanted you (or your boyfriend) gone from his house? A suave pickup move that ended in slapstick comedy? Your bed shall be of roses, bespangled with dew. Will you, will you, will you, will you come to the bower? Will you, will you, will you, will you come to the bower? There under the bower on soft roses you lie With a blush on your cheek, but a smile in your eye. Will you, will you, will you, will you smile, my beloved? Will you, will you, will you, will you smile my beloved? “The Battle of San Jacinto was probably lost to the Mexicans, owing to the influence of a Mulatto Girl Emily [in the employ of] Colonel Morgan, who was closeted in the tent with General Santana, at the time the cry was made “the enemy! they come! they come!” and detained Santana so long, that order could not be restored readily again.”She likely wasn’t alone with Santa Anna by choice. On the other hand, some Texans still claim that she patriotically put herself in that position to keep Santa Anna distracted while Sam Houston’s army made its charge. Emily West was employed as a housekeeper at the New Washington Association’s hotel in Morgan’s Point, Texas and was there on April 16, 1836 when Colonel Almonte swept through the town in pursuit of Texas President David G. Burnet. Emily and a number of other servants and residents of Morgan’s Point were apprehended and forced to accompany Santa Anna’s army when it departed a few days later. Emily and her fellow captives were in the Mexican camp on April 21, 1836 during the Battle of San Jacinto.Emily likely moved back to New York or Connecticut soon thereafter, but she is still the most beloved of all yellow roses. The song “The Yellow Rose Of Texas” was spread far and wide in the 1860s and 1870s. It was sung by homesick troops during the Civil War and it went up the trail with cowboys in the 1870s. Michael Martin Murphy recorded a very good version of the song on his “Cowboy Songs” album. The natural setting for this table was in either a rec room or a basement. In either case, the room likely had walls covered with fake-wood paneling. And of course, it had a bean bag chair in it. Tell me about your rec room. How did you break the Ping Pong table? (If there were boys involved, the Ping Pong table always ended up broken, and the ping pong balls had a very short life expectancy.) What’s more, hundreds of lost apples could likely be reclaimed at similar sites throughout Appalachia. “That part stayed with me,” says Brown. “I kept thinking: ‘How neat would it be to find an apple nobody’s tasted in 50 or 100 years?’” To date, he has reclaimed about 1,200 varieties, and his two-acre orchard, Heritage Apples, contains 700 of the rarest. Most haven’t been sold commercially for a century or more; some were cloned from the last known trees of their kind. Poverty is uncomfortable; but nine times out of ten the best thing that can happen to a young man is to be tossed overboard and compelled to sink or swim. There are men and women who make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They have the gift of kindness or courage or loyalty or integrity. It really matters very little whether they are behind the wheel of a truck or running a business or bringing up a family. The teach the truth by living it. I love agitation and investigation and glory in defending unpopular truth against popular error. A brave man is a man who dares to look the Devil in the face and tell him he is a Devil. “Whoever controls the volume of money in our country is absolute master of all industry and commerce...when you realize that the entire system is very easily controlled, one way or another, by a few powerful men at the top, you will not have to be told how periods of inflation and depression originate.” Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

There's a new movie out called Red Rocket, about a down-on-his-luck porno star who uses everyone he meets, but he's supposed to be an empathetic hero.
Yet the writer/director, Sean Baker, is in trouble with his cohorts in Hollywood. Why? Because he liked a tweet from Tulsi Gabbard supporting the Kyle verdict. Posted by: qdpsteve at November 21, 2021 09:59 PM (L2ZTs) 20

Posted by: BourbonChicken at November 21, 2021 10:02 PM (ybIRR) "Tulsi isn't bugfuck nuts like most of the D's" and "I wouldn't vote for Tulsi" are not mutually exclusive statements; they can both be true, just like "JFK/Reagan was competent and had a plan" and "JFK/Reagan's plan is not aligned with where I want things to go." That both parties are run by fools is a relatively new phenomenon that runs parallel with the business world's shift from highly motivated visionaries to headless-chicken managerial mediocrity and the disappearance of pop-culture role models. 1. Watch this, especially with kids/grandkids (a little intense at times). https://tinyurl.com/3stdz7r4. An excellent animated movie of Pilgrim's Progres.
2. airport and The Poseiden Adventure were both excellent movies that still hold up (although some things about them are dated). The rest were meh. 3. Our rec room in our daylight basement in Seattle had an old pin ball machine, a fireplace we never used, my brother's weird chemistry sets (with actual mercury), a slot car track and eventually a pool table we seldom used. Occasionally my dad had poker parties and I'd serve ritz crackers with onion soup dip and walk around wide eyed trying to figure out poker. The basement was a bit cold and damp and the house is long gone, but I'd love to be able to spend another evening there with my dad and mom. Posted by: LASue at November 21, 2021 10:17 PM (Ed8Zd) 105

The Waukesha attack was not only brutal, but fully inside the OODA loop of everyone present at the time. If anything, this attack was less to have been anticipated, than the 9/11 hijackings, which had been wargamed as "what if" scenarios for years.
Parades are going to now have to be both led and closely followed by an advance and rear-guard of side by side heavy trucks, as well as all side streets similarly blocked. And hell, I'd put out spike strips on the side streets, a full block away from the parade route intersections. Finally, this. The crowd would've been well entitled to rip the occupants out of that red SUV, and not only beat them to death there and then, but to follow up with tearing them limb from limb, gutted like fish, and hoist the severed heads high for all to see. Spontaneous Justice would've been merited here, even more than in Kyle's travails. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at November 21, 2021 10:25 PM (QzJWU) 149

So apparently Kyle R said he likes BLM. First of all, I'm not going to crap all over the kid given what he's just gone through; he got caught in a shitty situation, handled it remarkably well, and is now trying to make sense of what happens next. That having been said, one way of looking at this is that when you take away the terroristic bullshit of their day-to-day operations you're left with a general message that the justice system is totally busted. And Kyle was just on the receiving end of the said busted system. Think of it like The Troubles in Ireland, and how some of the people on the periphery of the IRA were just random guys who'd been harassed by overzealous government paramilitary types once too often.
The bigger issue here is that BLM *is* acting very much like an IRA style terrorist group, and just like American Catholics were wont to fling money at them because blah blah blah religious war, a lot of suburban types are financing this bullshit because they're one-line NPCs. @164: "So unless you use barriers to cordon off the parade route?"
Not necessary. Everyone was worried about mass shopping mall shootings in the months and years after 9/11. It's not like we had to strictly reinforce security measures throughout the country. Same goes for parades here. The big ones are already protected with surrounding streets closed. Small town parade life isn't gonna be turned upside down unless there's a sudden rash of attacks like this one; assuming, of course, this was a deliberate attack, and not some other kinda clusterfuck. Blanco, back in my senior year of high school (1983-84) I was in a Media Occupations class. We had a full TV studio setup.
One of my fellow students wanted to do an instant coffee-style ad for... mud. He'd show actors (other students) drinking it, they'd ask what it is, he would say "Mud!" and then us students would riff for a bit. My riff was "really? It tastes like that sacred cow's milk I had on my trip to India last year. Kind of fruity, kind of mellow..." Then the host made a 'cut him off' motion to the camera. Even then I had a rep for being long-winded... Posted by: qdpsteve at November 21, 2021 10:34 PM (L2ZTs) 188
Funny LoveSac story. When the kids were much younger, we got one and our kids and their cousins were goofing around at a family gathering. One of the boys catches an elbow to the face (accidentally) and pops up to go complain to his uncle. Uncle asked what happened. "Billy hit me in the LoveSac." Uncle proceeds to go lecture Billy about how dangerous it is to hit someone in the love sack and that it can lead to long term consequences...

Heavy, ten-wheeled (not semi-trailer) dump trucks, loaded with sand. Fine barriers they make, and they're far more temporary and portable than flatbed-delivered "Jersey Barriers", at the intersections. Plus, three or four or five wide leading the parade and following as a rear guard. You can make the parade vehicle-impregnable, all along the parade route. Marshalling and dispersal areas are separate problems though. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at November 21, 2021 10:40 PM (QzJWU) 203

I had some wood I needed cut up in the yard and I had an Arborvitae cypress in the middle of the back yard that I have never liked, so I cut up the logs in the back of the yard and took the saw to the arborvitae, a 15' tall evergreen, and it immediately started sagging towards the house. It didn't go over so with the running saw in one hand I reached up and gave the tree a tug, and it came over on top of me.
I managed to eel out from under it, but it did knock me over as it went past, and I did manage to not fall on the bar of the saw, which would have been nasty, even though the chain was stopped. There were these funny-looking open toilets in there that I had never seen before - I just figured that when girls got older and went to college, they had different facilities. It wasn't until I went to leave and saw a girl combing her mustache in front of the mirror that I realized I might be in the wrong bathroom.... Leave a few limbs on in the intended direction of fall, if it is leaning towards the house, etc. It is always safer to fell with 90% of the weight off the tree. Finally, get some good plastic wedges. So interesting... they just explained Ben Rothlisberger's situation with COVID-19 protocols. He's "vaccinated", but had a "breakthrough" (yeah, bullshit) case ("fever, cough, low energy"). But he recovered and had a negative test Friday, which allowed him to play tonight's game.
They added that now he does not have to be tested weekly anymore. Doesn't have to have another test for 90 days. So that's interesting. If you're "vaccinated", you have to be tested. But once you get COVID-19 and recover, you don't have to be tested anymore for 90 days. But why, if the "vaccines" work, do they require weekly testing? Seems like they require the testing, because they know the "vaccines" don't work, or expect them not to work. Otherwise, they wouldn't require testing, like they don't require testing after having gotten and recovered from COVID-19. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at November 21, 2021 11:24 PM (Do5/p) 368

@367: "So that's interesting. If you're 'vaccinated', you have to be tested."
I could be wrong, but I believe the daily testing for vaccinated players is only after a positive test, and then only until you test negative for three consecutive days. Otherwise, vaccinated players are not required to be tested on a regular basis. This came up during the Rodgers interviews two weeks ago. Posted by: Walter Freeman at November 21, 2021 11:29 PM What annoys me about this whole COVID thing is the assumption that no one is naturally immune. I have never had the flu shot in my adult life and have never had the flu in my adult life. But every year they put out the commercials telling everyone "get the flu shot! keep you and your loved ones safe". Um, no, thank you, I don't need it. I know this because of the past 22 years of never having a shot and never getting the flu. Yet, they treat this differently for COVID. They make it seem like even if COVID does not affect you, you can be a carrier and infect someone else. Therefore, everyone must get "vaccinated". I bet there are tens (hundreds?) of millions of Americans who are immune and won't be symptomatic and won't spread it. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at November 21, 2021 11:34 PM (Do5/p) 402

I've seen The Poseidon Adventure countless times. The reason is that we had a weak cable system out of Boston in the late 70s by the name of StarCase. (Our relatives outside of Philly already had HBO, and Daddy wanted a movie channel).
They'd show Movie A at 7 pm, Movie B at 9 pm, and Movie A again at 11 pm. It was hosted by the owner's wife, I think, and as the evening progressed, more buttons on her blouse would be undone. Anyway, some of the other movies we watched over and over again are "Capricorn One," "Big Wednesday," "Silver Streak," and "Joseph Andrews" (with Ann Margret). They came on to his property to attack him. I didn't know that Kyle put out a dumpster fire that was being rolled down to a gas station to blow up, with people all around. I didn't know that the Police were told to stand down as businesses were destroyed. I didn't know that Kyles Dad, Grandma and Friends all lived in Kenosha, 20 minutes from where he resided with his Mom part time in Illinois. I didn't know that someone knocked Rittenhouse down twice and then attempted to kick him with lethal force to the head. I didn't know that Huber had hit him in the head 2x with a skateboard. I didn't know Gaige Grosskreutz, aimed his gun at Kyle first, as he admitted on the stand. I also didn't know that in the State of Wisconsin, it is legal for Kyle to have a gun, even at 17 (which was why the gun charge was dismissed). I didn't know that Kyle did not cross state lines with a gun he wasn't supposed to have. The rightful gun owner did, as he was legally permitted to do. imo, it has nothing to do with Nordstrom's being woke or not. I don't think it has anything to do with Nordstrom at all.
It is a daily reminder that our civilized society that was once based on a general rule of law and personal responsibility is crumbling at a remarkable speed. If it were well loved conservative businesses being temporarily held hostage by 80 crowbar wielding thugs it would make no difference to the end result, a Mad Max society ruled by total indifference to human life/value. Posted by: Sam at November 22, 2021 12:41 AM (ohyxL) Yes, Congress had been changing the official price of silver and gold for a while, and one of the drives in the 1880's and earlier was to devalue the cost of silver or get rid of gold as the monetary basis to drive inflation to allow farmers more ability to pay off old debts. At the same time the policy of the big banksters was to compel Caribbean and Central American states to move from silver to gold to be in accord with US policy which also caused inflation and lots of local dissent. General Sherman's brother was a Senator with a lot of pull and was involved with a lot of these monetary moves. @612: "Have the 4channies confirmed this?!"
All of the BLM and Antifa people have ben angry online about the law changes that make it "legal to run over protesters." It's another example of "across state lines" factual and legal analysis. Of course, the laws don't actually say that, and it's a little more nuanced about being stuck in a mob, fearing you'll be dragged outta your car, beaten to death, etc., so you can flee the scene by any means necessary. This guy wasn't saying he was gonna go run people over in any legit threatening way. It was offhand tit-for-tat kinda "well if they can do that to us then we better do it to them too" sorta bullshit. That's one of the working theories right now.
Rumored stabbing in a nearby downtown city park roughly 30m before the parade. It doesn't mean he was being actively chased by police though. Coulda been a full blown drug and adrenaline induced panic attack for all anyone knows, and he ended up in the middle of the parade by accident. However, given the video, and the momentary hesitation before accelerating through the crowd, I think there's gonna be a plausible argument that he was aware enough to jump outta the car and flee on foot instead. At some point, it became a willful act, even if it wasn't premeditated and intentional. Posted by: Walter Freeman at November 22, 2021 01:52 AM (+WWsf) 626

I know people in my area add serviceberry to their plantings for quail and pheasant habitat.
Is it easy to get it to maturity and yielding human-edible fruit? Posted by: Pillage Idiot at November 22, 2021 12:03 AM (tkyK5) Serviceberry is a very pretty shrub, but I think they taste blah. Try some Crandall clove currants. Mail order bare root plants from Whitman Farm in Oregon. Posted by: WhyBanned at November 22, 2021 02:10 AM (ulaXh) 631
{{SMH}}, I bookmarked that sermon because it is rather long, but I will try and watch it after Thanksgiving. Jim, I don't think would be good eating, but he would be a sight to behold trussed up and being rotated over a hot fire. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. This is the first year in quite a while that we will have three generations around the table, now I'm one of the old people!

One thing that should be remembered. We are talking about a single driver now, but the WZs story mentions 3 guys in the SUV.

They WILL be trussed up and roasted over a hot fire. But, not at the TxMoMeet. Corsicana is closer to Heaven than the hell that the aforementioned miscreants might yet enjoy. Tell you this though. It's not even too late for those yet alive to repent. And they should. Bicep Boy, first amongst 'em. The pair Kyle sent to their rewards, though? As though they sowed, so shall they reap. I'm not so gracious. It's about accountability, not money. Jerry was blind and deaf. Lived 2 yrs on his own in asst living after Jo had strokes and was taken to the health care section.
She died in Mar. We saw him, we were limited before because of Chinese Covid among the employees. Point is his death would not be valued much, sadly. Blind, deaf, 90 (Korean War vet) and just lost your wife of 67 yrs doesn't make for future earnings potential, LOL. There is something wrong w/ the system at Sierra Winds, Peoria, AZ. Jerry fell, was sent to the hosp...head got several staples, stayed overnight. Sent home the next day, some Sierra Winds employees knew he was home as they let him into the apt... James Garfield was an impressive historical figure. James Garfield became a canal worker, but almost drowned. After that, he did go to college, and soon became a professor and even college president by age 26. He was elected to the Ohio legislator, served in the Civil war where he attained the rank of general. During the war, he was elected to Congress. As a Congressman, he had a mathematical proof published. He also became Speaker of the House. He cheated on his wife, Lucretia ("Crete"), but she took him back. His famous "Destiny of the Republic" speech at the 1880 convention led to his becoming nominated for President (even though the Ohio legislature had elected him to the U.S. Senate). Garfield was elected very narrowly.
During his term, Garfield butted heads with the NY "Stalwart" Republican establishment, of which his VP (Chester A. Arthur) had been a beneficiary. He was shot by a crazed office-seeker, Charles Guiteau, who had stalked Garfield for weeks. Alexander Graham Bell actually developed a device to locate the bullet, but it was not allowed to scan all the body. Garfield died a painful death two months after being shot.
