From last time:

We on the right have been on a century long Love Affair with expanding Government Power by allowing Law Enforcement to do whatever they want to do. We are all slowly waking up to the fact that this has been a huge mistake on our part, perhaps one of the biggest mistakes we've made. (although giving up the Education Establishment might be even bigger)

A lot of this is our fault. Because back in the day, our parents watched news footage of hippies throwing rocks at buildings and Black Panthers walking up and down carrying weapons and thought "oh no, we can't have this" and voted for every "law and order" bill that was placed before them. Pansy-ass liberal judges who let dangerous felons walk also contributed to this reaction. This resulted in longer prison sentences and mandatory prison sentences, and "three strikes" laws. And created a new breed of hyper-aggressive prosecutor who will go to any length to put somebody behind bars

And we helped create the post-legal environment we're now complaining about. Don't let the Wisconsin prosecutor's description of Rittenhouse's shooting casualties as "heroes" fool you. Thomas Binger is as much our creation as he is the left's.

Put another way, we played a big role in creating the weapons the left is now using against us.

We didn't notice that these new measures were giving more and more power to government officials along increasing danger of potential abuse. We also should have heeding the warnings about the PATRIOT Act, but 9/11 was still a raw memory and we were in no mood to listen to objections. We never thought that someone would ever say "Terrorists, you say? Hey, then this would apply to domestic terrorists, too, wouldn't it?"

No, I haven't forgotten the War on Drugs. It's very much like the War on Terror: ill-conceived, never-ending, expensive, and ultimately futile.

Time was that the right was all about law and order and the left about civil rights. It's funny how we seemed to have switched places. This is a fact I have become keenly aware of lately. Check this out:

Down at the right, you are urged to contact the National Lawyers Guild, so presumably they are the ones who published this flyer. For those of you who aren't familiar with the NLG, they're a bunch of rat bastard commies. In fact, of all the rat bastard commie organizations in the country, the NLG is probably the most rat bastard commiest. Yet I find myself agreeing with most of what they're saying here. I've said this before: we conservatives have gone overboard on "back the blue" and given them the benefit of the doubt for far too long. We need to take a step back and think about it a bit. Law Enforcement is now just one more corrupt institution (and maybe it has been that way for a long time). And that's sad because I've seen YouTube videos of LEOs doing their jobs in extraordinarily adverse circumstances, good shoots, saving lives, protecting people, etc.

Unfortunately, I've also seen videos of their jackbooted lockdown thuggery and standing around like potted plants while cities burned in the 2020 riots, and this has left an indelibly bad taste in my mouth.

Prayer Requests:
9/18 – Homer’s Donuts needs prayers for hope, healing, health, support, and strength as his wife has chosen to divorce him. They have a young son. Clinical depression and panic attacks, a constant in his life, are hitting him hard. He says he has such low energy that Jeb Bush looks down on him. The divorce is making things worse, and he feels completely obsolete and alone, without anyone on his side.
10/28 Update – Homer’s Donuts says he is undergoing more frequent panic attacks and fears that the frequency and severity will ultimately lead him to be declared “unfit” to have custody of his son. He has an exit plan in place and will move out soon, but life with the ex-wife is simply unbearable.
10/13 – Aelfheld asks for prayers for her former co-worker, KV, who lost her mother on 9/21 and her grandmother a week later, all while her husband was sick with pneumonia. Prayers for her and her sisters in their time of loss and mourning.
10/13 – Sassy has 2 prayer requests. First is a thank you and praise report. She has made it through the gauntlet of breast cancer. (Double mastectomy and rebuild in Feb, Mar-May chemo, June-July radiation, Sept hysterectomy). She is now free to look towards the future, and thanks the horde for their prayers. Second is a prayer for the Repose of the soul of Gilbert, who died of Covid. He leaves a distraught wife and 3 teen sons. They are strong Chinese Catholics, but fear and anxiety are strong. May the Lord give them peace.
10/13 – Grannysaurus Rex requests prayers for her father-in-law who has entered hospice care. He is a much-loved WWII Marine vet, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Please pray for a peaceful passing and for God’s grace as a comfort for the family.
10/21 Update – Her father-in-law has peacefully passed away. Thanks to all for their prayers.
10/17 – Pollywog the ‘Ette passes along a prayer request for Brother Tim, who was admitted to the hospital Sunday for kidney stones and UTI. He needs both full healing, since this isn’t the first time he’s had these problems, and financial blessings. Prayer that he be able to have rest and peace, not something hospitals are known for, would be helpful as well.
11/16 Update – Brother Tim is healing, but still needs prayers for his job situation.
10/20 – Dr_No sends an update on his daughter, Megan, who we have prayed for while she was going through Stage III[c] cancer of the sigmoid colon. She has been done with chemo for a while and has received her ‘N.E.D’ diagnosis: ‘No Evidence of Disease’. Her doctors and caregivers were outstanding, and it means everything to see her able to live a normal life again. Yes, there’s always the unspoken fear that she may in future get a diagnosis of cancer’s return, but for now we enjoy that she’s healthy again and no longer in pain. After reading the prayer list, and understanding what others are faced with Do_No says he can only wish for them the joy and relief that he and the rest of the family have at Megan’s successful treatment, and sends his thanks to all for their words up.
10/22 - Pookysgirl asks for prayers for Pooky, as he is going in for extensive neuropsychological testing for 4-8 hours on Oct 27, so he could really use prayers today. He’s had issues with similar testing in the past, so prayers for calming and peace would be appreciated.
10/27 – R asks for prayers for himself and the woman he loves. He broke her heart with foolish decisions and now they are both brokenhearted. He is facing a future that will be filled with problems that might break him. He is trying not to fall into despair and could use a boost from everyone.
1/5 – Eeyore mood has an update:
I wrote you a couple of times about my friend's 4 year old grandson who was killed by the child's mother's boyfriend. He got out on bail because he was only charged with Negligence Resulting in Death. The autopsy report has not been formally released. The results could bring an increase in charges. The man is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 15th. I would ask for prayer that the man who killed my friend's grandson be charged for the crimes he committed and justice be done. Also that God's peace be for the child's father, siblings and grandmother so they know He cares for them. Understandably, they are still devastated by this tragedy. Compounding this is that the child's mother is still defending her son's killer, saying it was an accident. 11/8 – 496 requests prayers for strength and wisdom for him and his entire family.
11/9 – Weak Geek asks for prayers for his father, who is recovering from surgery. He is out of intensive care but drops into bouts of defeatism. Also prayers for WG’s sister, who is on site and therefore shoulders the brunt of this burden.
11/9 – Krebs v Carnot has 2 requests: First, that his father-in-law William, find peace and blessings in the presence of the Lord, having passed away Saturday after a brief illness, and hat members of his family be comforted and strengthened with the knowledge that their beloved Bill has found eternal and joyous peace at last. And second, that his mother, 3 siblings, and he be granted patience, strength, and wisdom, as they work through getting Mom to a state where she is able to continue to live her life as independently as possible in the place of her choosing, and that all those in the elder care community working with her continue to help Mom see and do what she much through their kind and loving teachings and that Mom’s eyes be opened so as to understand that they, too, will rejoice as she progresses toward her goal.
11/16 – Inspector’s best friend Tom was diagnosed with Covid last week. It’s been like a nasty flu, but he is recovering. Prayers for his continued recovery, that it not affect his job.
11/16 – Inspector’s co-worker Marie was diagnosed last week with uterine cancer. It was caught early, so they’re hopeful for the prognosis, but prayer for healing, and strength for her and her family would be very appreciated.

For Healing:
10/20 – Nancy at 7000 ft is asking for prayers for her friend Timothy, who just had a quadruple bypass yesterday. Tim owns and runs a small business repairing industrial machines, and has recently purchased an old church with his wife Gabrielle, and was in the process of moving when he experienced a minor heart attack. Further investigation revealed he had an aneurismic section of his aorta, a genetic condition, and required multiple bypasses. Pray for an easing of his post-surgical pain and a full recovery.
10/27 – J asks for prayers for his nephew, Tim, who has throat and tongue cancer. Tim is in his mid-30s, married, and has 5 kids.
11/3 – MammaB is asking for prayers for her father who is 84 and having kidney failure.
11/4 – Tonypete asks for prayers for his dear friend Beth’s daughter Dominique who is 36 years old and has been diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. I t has already spread to her liver and appears to be very aggressive. Please pray for a remission and for her doctors’ skill. Failing that, prayers for a Holy Death.

Heard some climate expert (alleged) interviewed on NPR who was saying that according to his models, for every 1.5 degrees the earth's temp's rises *1 billion* people will have to move/be displaced. This was based on migration and extinction of other animals.

Does that make any sense even at face value?! The average temperatures in a given location vary by more that from year to year, right?

All I could think of was that Brit scholar whose models said we'd have millions die in the first few months of covid -- and then that didn't happen, and there's been no accountability for the lives ruined, fortunes lost thanks to his crappy "modeled" predictions.

As a secular conservative (former libertarian), Dennis Prager has convinced me that the biggest mistake we (our side/values) made was ditching the practice and teaching of Judeo-Christian religion and wisdom.

Primarily, having been spoiled by the apparent general goodness of most Americans, we grievously and mistakenly bought into the notion that "man is basically good" when, in fact, the opposite is true. And thus our trust in and support of even more power and authority to those in power and authority.

This is correct as far as it goes. Once we tackle this one, our next subject will be looking at our support of the Military-Industrial Complex. To have the rank-and-file serve our country so admirably yet have its leadership so utterly fail us needs to be assessed as well.

I've always said that it's important to at least look at the arguments from the Left and not dismiss them out of hand because of the source. They will see blind spots that we just can't.

Yes, I know. But OSHA was withdrawn following initial rulings. I suspect OSHA is going to play "wait and see." If the contractor mandates (also lots of active litigation) survive, they'll rework their mandate and try again, citing the contractor mandate as precedent.

Honestly, police forces have always been that way. The image of Andy Griffith with Barney Fife carrying his one bullet in his pocket was always a myth. Police have always had a certain level of corruption because any large organization has a certain level of corruption. They've always been willing to use violence because they often deal with the types of people who will accept no other way.

The old saying that "good people sleep easy at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf" applies just as much to cops as to the military. In both cases they may be necessary, but they aren't your friends. They'll beat your ass just as quickly as anyone else's.

It is complete bs. You are right that temps go up and down by that each year, and it is completely normal.
Also, I always use the example of the desert. The desert can be 115 degrees at 2 or 3pm. And you know at night, the desert can get pretty cold, 50 degrees? So a 65 degree variance in temperature in 24 hours(!)and all the desert critters are fine. It makes no sense to me that a change of 1-2 degrees one way or the other, over decades, is significant.

While we're at it, let's put more emphasis on the right to a speedy trial also. There's no reason why someone should wait more than six months (which should be the outlier on the long end) from the time of the crime to the time of their trial. If we need more judges to clear the backlog of cases, then make it happen.

The prosecution's argument is that if not for that act, Rosenbaum wouldn't have chased. If not for shooting Rosenbaum, Huber, Jumpkick Man, and Grosskreutz wouldn't have tried to subdue Kyle.

If the defense had the high resolution video, they could have had their expert examine it to rebut this theory. The prosecution maliciously and illegally withheld the video to prevent examination of this central piece of evidence.

I believe you're talking about the FBI drone footage. That's the black and white footage that is taken from a much higher altitude. The FBI initially gave low res footage, claiming they couldn't find the high res footage. After the FBI caught a lot of heat for this bullshit, the footage magically appeared.

The Roman Republic may have used 10 stone tablets; but Justinian's Code (the great rewrite of the law done in Constantinople in the 6th century) ran to over 25,000 pages. It fell out of fashion because it contained a lot of specifics on regulating various business practices and tansactions, and for the next 1000 years the economic systems were too backward to need such a thing.

Interestingly Napoleon's Code was mainly a rewrite of Justinian's Code. It was adopted by almost all the European nations that were doing away with the Feudal codes (not England, though!) and it's still the basis for most European law today.

I might disagree, in that for criminal matters you need a criminal lawyer--it's like hiring a pediatrician to do surgery, everyone has specialties.

Criminal cases have a language all their own. And it helps enormously to hire a known defense lawyer from that particular area--the criminal bar all know each other.
A well known lawyer in the area makes a big difference on how you'll be treated by the judge.

You can get tart cherry juice, it's just juiced cherries and then concentrated a bit with no sugar added. It very much tastes like cherry, like a cherry pie, but it is very tart and not really sweet. I tried to take a bunch when I had gout but it didn't really do anything. Diluted with water it tasted pretty good though.

I'm not above coining a new phrase every now and then - or re-using an old one. I'm a big, big fan of National Populist - which is where I think a portion of us is going.

Social Republican is my attempt to describe the bulk of Republicans I worked with, right after 9/11. They identified, hard, with the GOP. But they were for anything other than individual rights. And they were four-square behind the Patriot Act because - "9/11".

When asked questions like "what in the Hell do you think a Clinton would do with these powers" they'd just ree as hard as any damn Liberal. Their political philosophy was about as deep as my pecker is long - so not very.

Mostly Boomers. Its easy for me to see, contrary to popular belief here, why a major portion of the country simply doesn't trust Republicans on general principals.

I believe Oregon Muse's point was that we have supported making it easy for Prosecutors to indict anyone they want for anything, and for LEO's to arrest anyone they want, for anything, at any time. This has led to a culture inside law enforcement which has now become "we do whatever we want, whenever we want, because we can." It didn't use to be this way, even 30 years ago it wasn't this way. We helped the change to happen.

One specific part of this - people here are calling for the Prosecutor to be disciplined or even prosecuted - never gonna happen. Because of the changes over the last 30 years or so, legal precedent is that Prosecutors are *Never* disciplined for anything unless they outrageously and explicitly violate Black Letter Law. That's their incentive to misbehavior; there's never any cost for getting caught.

Most camps were rough, but they were only unlawful if there was something preventing coalescing resolution process. Actual courts and laws were considered an imposition when they arrived

I find no point in wishing for a good outcome when it is very obvious too many people left and right have a vested interest in putting this kid behind bars for the rest of his life. This is not just Kyle Rittenhouse v Antifa - it is Rittenhouse v the entire Deep State.

This is another time when being chronically depressed and believing the worst of your fellow man and the government is the prudent course of action.

But, Rousseau's analysis of what is good in a regime is a pretty fair summary: A well governed nation acts to benefit its citizens by increasing wealth of its citizens individually and increasing numbers. A bad government does the reverse--people are dying off and not reproducing and are being shorn of their individual wealth.

An intricate argument for sure - very hard to debate such an intellectual masterpiece. But I'll give it a go.

Ruby Ridge. Waco. Was Obama in charge ? Civil asset seizure without trial - did Obama invent it ? The shift to civilian surveillance as part of the Patriot Act - did Obama write that legislation ?

Did Obama create Homeland Security ? Did he create Five Eyes ? Did he use it to increase domestic surveillance after 9/11 ?

I believe the answer to all the above is "No". But I get it - it's easier to cling to the notion of Obama the Super Villain. Because the alternative, that we do this to ourselves, is a tougher pill to swallow.

I don't buy that. It was never about Party for me. It was a learning curve of educating myself on History, Civics, and Economics that allowed me to see that a great many Republicans had been convinced over 5 generations of The Progressive Era, that government is the answer, that soldiers and cops were the good guys simply for putting on the uniform, that government indoctrination centers educated people, and that forced wealth redistribution was charity.

I still vote Republican, because it's the least offensive choice, except when it's not, but I woke up to Bush's Nationalist Prgressivism.

This sort of introspective self-criticism is so desperately needed on both sides of the aisle these days, and the fact that I don't *ever* see it on the left is one of the reasons I still call myself a conservative.

So thank you. I know it's just a blog post, but it meant a lot to me, because it perfectly mirrors what I've been feeling the last few years, and it's comforting to know there are other folks out there who feel the same way.
