Daily Tech News 16 November 2021

Top Story

  • If the facts are on your side, pound on the facts. If the law is on your side, pound on the law. If neither is on your side, sweep the jury with an AR-15.

  • If you don't have an AR-15 just blow up one of your own satellites. (Ars Technica)

Russia appears to have tested an anti-satellite weapon and in the process created an entire cloud of anti-satellite weapons, with over 1500 pieces of high-velocity shrapnel being tracked and innumerable smaller pieces posing a hazard to everything in low Earth orbit.

Tech News

  • New York City has passed a bill requiring bias audit of AI technology used in making hiring decisions. (Protocol)

This is actually a good move. Most of this stuff is worthless, trivial algorithms dressed up as AI. If all this does force people to stop claiming AI when there is none, good enough.

  • Perfecting the New York street. (Curbed)

By making absolutely every aspect of it worse.

To be fair, they're not attempting to make the perfect street, or even a passable street, they want to make the perfect New York street, which is to say, Cthulhu in pavement.

  • Want to get a new Intel 12th generation CPU but don't want to move to Windows 11? Wondering how much performance you will lose by sticking with Windows 10? Turns out for gaming the answer is around -2%. (Tech Powerup)

That is, Windows 10 is on average slightly faster than Windows 11. Also, DDR4 memory is - currently - slightly faster on average than DDR5 in gaming benchmarks.

That will change over time, but for now the biggest advantage of DDR5 is that it provides lots of memory bandwidth for high-performance integrated graphics, which is not noticeably something Intel's desktop CPUs possess. I'll take another look in January when the 12th gen laptop chips are expected to launch.

  • More leaked benchmarks show that the upcoming 12800H mobile chip is both faster and slower than the 12700H. (WCCFTech)

I think we should ignore these benchmarks until the parts actually ship. They're garbage.

  • Hackers are taking over Alibaba cloud servers to mine cryptocurrencies. (Bleeping Computer)

Which is illegal in China in the first place.

  • Air is the new surface. (American Shipper)

Ocean freight is so screwed up at this point that air freight is looking attractive. Costs are up 150% compared to before the Bat Flu, but costs for surface freight have increased as much as tenfold. And air freight is much faster and bypasses the need for long-distance trucking or rail transfers to and from port locations.

  • Intel's 4004 turns 50. (WCCFTech)

The first microprocessor was designed for calculators and only supported 4 bit data. It was followed by the 8008 in 1972, and the much more successful 8080 in 1974, which launched the microcomputer industry.

It's been all downhill from there.

And I think I had a 4004 calculator at one point. I'm not sure but I remember that the display was an array of large LEDs. I know I had a Commodore calculator at one point. Probably still do if I could find it. Possibly also in my sock drawer.

20 Howdy! My computer gave me the blue screen of death late last week. Being an imbecile, I decided to replace it with a refurbished Dell Optiplex, thinking I was saving money. Had never bought a refurbished cpu before. It doesn't work. Well, it does work, so long as nothing is plugged into the HDMI port. Then the main screen disappears.

So, I'm going to take this piece of shyte back, get my money back, and get a brand new computer. Any suggestions from the Moron Horde? If you're in this thread, you know 1,000 times what I know about computers.

i had no issues driving in Spain. The idea of driving in he UK scared the Hell out of me. There is a reason they paint "look right" at intersections. People get dead because is it takes a while to get over the impulse to look left.

I remember driving the main highway along the Costa Del Sol. It was supposed to be the most dangerous highway in Europe. I can see why they say that, they give you very little space when merging onto the highway.

A funny thing was when the great politicos spent a ton to build a toll highway right next to the old road. That thing was new, slick as Hell, and all you could ask for. It was also legit barren. Nobody from Spain would pay to drive on a highway no matter their circumstance. I drove it out of curiosity and we were pretty much the only people on the road.

Up early to work out. Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is out on the floor here, though, and looking at me so appealingly I hate to leave. After all, we may not have much more time together. On the other hand, it's cool outside for a change; and Chekov may soldier on with his arthritis, if that's what it is, for quite some time. Choices, choices . . .

I have one, a Braun, and it would work fine. But I get up at different times depending on whether I plan to work out or not. I set everything up the night before; then all I need to do is press a couple of buttons. I drink some water (which helps to wake you up), put on my robe, turn on the computer and possibly the TV, and by then enough coffee has brewed that I can pour a cup.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at November 16, 2021 04:17 AM (c6xtn)

30 Sam, I used to do that until one night the cat somehow moved the coffee pot and when I got up there was a nice puddle of coffee on the counter and floor.

Not a good thing to wake up to!

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at November 16, 2021 04:19 AM (wL8Gk)

31 Never could work out first thing in the morning. Always preferred the end of the day. If it was a bad day, no better way to end it than climbing under a pile of iron. Sadly, those days are somewhat behind me.

Posted by: Sam Adams at November 16, 2021 04:21 AM (VDbGO)

32 Mine goes fairly fast, I don't need to make a full pot as Mr. I doesn't drink coffee.

...i know, that's so crazy.

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at November 16, 2021 04:21 AM (wL8Gk)

33 New York City streets are fine. The side walks are big where they are supposed to be (23rdst, 14th st, Broadway, etc) and smaller and residential where they currently are (Soho, tribeca) and everything is perfectly manic in the areas we want that too (Chinatown) nothing needs to be changed unless you want to ruin it, such as temporarily closing 14th street to traffic so the buses can move around while the L Train is closed, and a year after the L Train is finished being fixed still not allowing traffic, because it was always about making it harder to have a car in the city.

These are more wanna be communist trying to impose centralized planning, and they can all go back out of states where they came from (i bet not one person involved is from NYC, or even a 30 minute drive from it, they most likely moved here 3 months ago and claim now to be new yorkers, despite being afraid to go outside of time square) If NYC was actually left to New Yorkers it'd be the center of the country and run a hell of a lot more to the center politically, but every asshole chasing a dream comes here and destroys a city that's not theirs.

34 MLII, ha!

I once had a dachshund get up on the dining room table and consume an entire pot roast and three quarters of the carrots while we were out in the kitchen getting plates and silverware. When we came back into the room he was laying in the middle of the table. Couldn't move. Looked like he'd swallowed a football. But he also had a gleam in his eye that said, "that was totally worth it."

40 I can't believe I read that much about urban planning. the only thing that stood out to me is that I will never volunteerly move to a blue city. It would have to be some really crazy circumstance. I enjoyed visiting NYC back in the day. At night the only cars on the road were taxis. It was all yellow, all the time.

I feel bad for people that spend there time figuring out better ways to run a place like it is an ant farm. To each his own i suppose.

I have had many versions of the Keurig. I am going to go with a Mr.Coffee brewer though. There was a time I thought they were low rent. But they keep coming up as very good coffee makers. The k cup thing gets old. I can see why many like it, it is good for an office.

The town my mom grew up in had legit the worst water. I am not saying i was unhealthy, it likely had a ton of minerals and nutrients. It tasted like ass. To even get an idea of it you would need to throw in a bunch of salt. When a town's name and "water" together were a noun, that is a bad thing.

100% agree. My last company hired a group of really expensive engineers to build "AI" (or "machine learning" or whatever they were calling it that week) into an existing application. It took two years for management to realize the new architecture was never going to be better at making decisions than the old one, which was written in a few days.

53 Lol, Quint.

When we lived in Grand Rapids, MI the water was worst I ever tasted. Even smelled bad.

Area I grew up in (Milw. Co) had the cryptosporidium (sp?) outbreak in the 90s. I was back in WI then and when visiting parents would drink the water. Wow, that was a bad time of being sick. Everyone who drank any of the waterfrom that filtration plant was sick and for the 1st few days no one knew why. People were buying anti-diarreha meds and prolonging the sickness.

Took a long time to want to drink water from the faucet ever again!

63 Questions about apps. And since I will be napping soon, I won't be responding live to your answers.

I got a new drone yesterday. It wants me to download an app. I have an old Samsung smartphone with no service dealio. I've never downloaded an app before.

So. Can I somehow do this, d/l an app to the computer or 'dead' smartphone, so I can get more than basic functionality out of the drone's camera?

I did manage to get the drone up in the air. Yay me.

These days, it seems that you need an app to get an erection. My dick is objecting to this idea, and refuses to upload itself. I may have to beat it like it owes me money (still my favorite Ace meme).

I was having problems with my computer frequently shutting down unexpectedly. As a random thing to do, I manually started a disk defragmentation process, which took forever to finish. Cross fingers, I haven't had any problems since then.

I thought Win10 was supposed to do defragmentation on a periodic basis, so why it took so long and why that seems to have cleared things up is a bit of a mystery.

A lot of thought, and multi-decades planning and infiltration went into all this. Is there a rational reason to hold power, only to destroy the need for power?

The fact that no one is talking about the insanity occurring in Canada and Australia is very telling. I am watching videos of them absolutely brutalizing their own people on a daily basis. Streets are not givens but tools that we call into service for a dizzying array of unrelated purposes: to parade fashions; to exercise our bodies and our First Amendment rights; to sit, shop, eat, play chess, avoid infection, and socialize; to beat the drum for causes; to ferry supplies, handle stormwater, pile trash, facilitate surveillance, and provide staging grounds for construction. Because it is looking like the people who were jabbed have had their immunity shot to hell. Singapore, which has 85% of the total population jabbed, is seeing surges. If the jab doesn't kill you, a follow-on COVID infection might. Just wait until companies try telling employees they need a third jab to be considered vaccinated. A lot of them will quit.

259 Question for you... was Kenosha the end of the blm rioting in cities?

Yes. BLM was afraid of being Rittenhoused after that. And that's exactly why the left is going hard on this trial.

That was my recollection, too. Just as Kent State was the end of the large protests against the Vietnam War - when four students were killed - it seemed to have a chilling effect. A citizen taking up arms and killing a couple of anarchists in Kenosha seems to have a similar effect.

Just a theory.

i have probably mentioned three or four times that she
reminds me exactly of the woman press secretary from Michael Clayton. It is odd that that never took off, they even look alike. I am not saying she is a crook. and by she I mean..... Funny it seams no one else notices it. i have likely seen psaki speak for ten seconds and it was so obvious.

No. A kid with a rifle and his head on a swivel.

Is there any clearer case to be made that TPTB have zero interest in law and order?

271 Sam Adams - regarding the computer, I recently got a Dell Inspiron 16 Plus and it's great. My model has 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD, but they don't seem to sell that same configuration in the US.

You can upgrade it - it has room for up to 64GB of RAM and a second SSD. Best feature is the 16" 3072x1920 screen, which is really good. My other laptop is also a Dell, the Inspiron 14 7000, but they no longer sell that model.

Second best feature is that Dell provides service manuals for all their systems, where something like a MacBook can't be serviced at all, not unless you have a surface-mount soldering station.

Think you're absolutely right about Gates. The man thinks his success in business has conferred God-like universal wisdom upon him. That man is in serious need of being checked.

274 140 I don't think Kenosha burns if Kyle is acquitted. Trump is gone, so the fascists might march around and sound angry but they don't want to embarrass the junta.
