The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." Ralph Waldo Emmerson

Quote II

“This is an industry populated by a lot of white men over the age of 55. This group of people overwhelmingly voted for Trump. Some people have talked about aggressive truck drivers cutting them off or not being helpful. So, obviously, the more populated it is with people of color, I think you’ll see less of that. How can you encourage people to come and disrupt this space when it seems a bit unwelcoming?” MSNBC Scholar Tiffany Cross

Quote III

"That's why I hang on. These people have relied on the store from way before I was even here." Julie Perkins, pharmacist and owner of Batson's Drug Store.

Even out of office everything TFG touches turns to shit. Obama Presidential Center Brings Rising Costs to Low-Income Chicago Residents

As the Obama Presidential Center continues construction near Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, many low-income residents are asking the city for protection over fears that property taxes, insurance, and interest rates will skyrocket as the neighborhood changes to a more upscale area.

Many residents of the Woodlawn and South Shore neighborhoods fear being driven out of their homes due to rising rents and house prices as the area changes once the Obama Center opens, the Chicago Tribune reports.

His puppet in the White House is turning everything into shit as well.

8 Dead, 80 Infected In Fully-Vaccinated Connecticut Nursing Home

An outbreak of COVID-19 has terrorized a Connecticut nursing home, leaving eight dead and about 100 infected, according to NBC Connecticut.

Geer Village Senior Community in North Canaan, Connecticut, is an independent and assisted living home which experienced a severe outbreaking of the virus. Since Sept. 30, 22 employees and 67 residents have contracted the virus, with eight residents dying from virus-related health issues.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

How one airman fixed the Air Force’s night vision problem with a 4-cent chunk of plastic

Afour-cent chunk of plastic doesn’t sound like revolutionary technology, but if put in exactly the right place and exactly the right time, then it can make a world of difference. That’s what Air Force Master Sgt. Shannon Fulmer proved this fall when he invented a homemade “helmet mount spacer” that fixes a costly night vision problem in the service.

Is there anyone who has a f*cking ounce of brains and/or common sense? Nope. Even the Energy Secretary eats paste.

Nightmare fuel: Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm sings the praises of banning gasoline in music video that should’ve been left in the ground

Is there a rule written down somewhere that liberals have to be extremely cringe?

Because plenty of people on the Right have made us cringe plenty of times, but they’re nothing compared to what lefties have put out there. Case in point, this anti-gasoline music video, featuring a special appearance by Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm:

Black bear lives matter.

Perhaps he needed his bear necessities.

A screaming 7-Eleven clerk in Olympic Valley, California got a closer wildlife encounter than she desired after a black bear strolled into the store and “used” the hand sanitizer station.

A clip of the critter’s bizarre convenience store stop boasts 8.1 million views on TikTok as of Tuesday morning.

“Oh my goodness, he knows how to open — heeey, stooop!” 7-Eleven employee Rachelle Ducusin, 44, can be heard screaming hysterically at the burly beast in the now-viral clip, which she uploaded to the platform on Sunday.

“Stoooop! Shhhhh. Shhhh. Get out!” she continues in a combo shew-and-shriek before bursting into a series of dramatic sobs and empty threats.

Of course real meat is better than wanna be meat.

Plant-based burgers often promise protein comparable to their animal-based counterparts, but the way protein is expressed on current nutrition labels—a single generic value expressed in grams—can be misleading. That's because the human body does not use "protein" per se. Instead, it needs essential amino acids, which are present in proteins, but the concentration and digestibility of amino acids are different among protein sources.

To account for these differences, a new standard for protein quality, the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS), was developed by the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) about a decade ago. It specifically focuses on the digestibility of essential amino acids, and aims to put more accurate tools in the hands of nutritionists and food assistance programs the world over.

It's always interesting to see what the other side's options are for stopping "Climate Change".

Fortunately, there’s another way. It is possible to keep global heating under 1.5 degrees, but it requires that we shift into emergency mode. And it requires us to be honest with ourselves about the reality of what has to change. No fairy tales.

First, we have to nationalize the fossil fuel industry and the energy companies, bringing them under public control, just like any other essential service or utility. This will allow us to wind down fossil fuel production and use in line with science-based schedules, without having to constantly fight fossil capital and their propaganda. It also allows us to protect against price chaos, and ration energy to where it’s needed most, to keep essential services going.

At the same time, we need to scale down less-necessary parts of the economy in order to reduce excess energy demand: SUVs, private jets, commercial air travel, industrial beef, fast fashion, advertising, planned obsolescence, the military industrial complex and so on. We need to focus the economy on what is required for human well-being and ecological stability

Some Auto News

Lucid Air named Motor Trend Car of The Year. Yes. Lucid Air.

New York (CNN Business)The Lucid Air, the first model from California-based electric car start-up company Lucid Motors, has been named MotorTrend's 2022 Car of the Year.

It's the first time any automaker has won the award with its first car. MotorTrend's panel of judges lauded the Lucid Air for its extraordinary range and efficiency -- some versions can go up to 520 miles on a single charge -- as well as its performance and luxurious interior.
In its announcement, MotorTrend called the Air "the new [electric vehicle] benchmark." The Air's electric motors were developed by Lucid itself. With no space taken up by a gasoline engine, the Air has a large cabin area with ample storage space in the trunk as well as under the hood.

The average price of a new car sets a new high.

The average price of a new car is now at a record high, according to vehicle valuation and automotive research company Kelley Blue Book.

Hard hitting journalism? Or just a cheap swipe at St. Jude's Hospital?

A series of sharp knocks on his driver’s side window startled Jason Burt awake.

It was the middle of the night on a Saturday in 2016. Burt was sleeping in his pickup truck in the parking lot of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, where his 5-year-old daughter was being treated for brain cancer. He’d driven more than 500 miles from his home in Central Texas to visit her.

A St. Jude security guard peered into the truck and asked Burt what he was doing. Burt explained that his daughter and her mother, his ex-girlfriend, were staying in the hospital’s free patient housing. But St. Jude provides housing for only one parent. Burt, a school bus driver making $20,000 a year, told the guard he couldn’t afford a hotel. The guard let the exhausted father go back to sleep.

St. Jude would do no more to find him a place to stay.

“They were aware of the situation,” Burt said. “I didn’t push anything. I was just grateful she was getting treated and I was doing what I needed to do.”

Yes Hollywood lacks creativity.

Mel Gibson is stepping behind the camera once again, this time to direct the latest — and likely final — installment of the Warner Bros. action franchise Lethal Weapon.

The project was put in limbo when director Richard Donner, who’d helmed all the Weapon movies since their inception in 1987, died in July. Donner, at 91, was working on mounting the fifth installment, which has been in development on and off for years, with screenwriters coming and going. Richard Wenk, who wrote the Denzel Washington-starring Equalizer thrillers, wrote the latest draft.

I wonder how many other "Educators" have this belief and don't express it?

Old Dominion University placed on administrative leave a professor who said in a recent interview that adult sexual attraction to minors is OK as long as it's not acted upon.

What are the details?
The Norfolk, Virginia, college made the announcement Tuesday evening, saying the move involving Dr. Allyn Walker — an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice — was "effective immediately."

"Reactions to Dr. Walker's research and book have led to concerns for their safety and that of the campus," the ODU statement read. "Furthermore, the controversy over Dr. Walker's research has disrupted the campus and community environment and is interfering with the institution's mission of teaching and learning."

Look at the crazy shit going on in a small rural school district in Wisconsin. Kettle Moraine School District won't notify parents if their children are "transitioning".

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Some parents are suing the Kettle Moraine School District over a policy that allows minor students to change their names and gender pronouns at school without parental consent.

The lawsuit by two sets of parents was filed by the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty and the Alliance Defending Freedom in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday.

Cops: Farting, No Courtesy Flush Led To Jail Attack
Assailant accused roomie of "stinking up the cell"

NOVEMBER 9--A Florida inmate charged with assaulting his roommate told cops that the victim “farts too much stinking up the cell” and fails to “give a courtesy flush” after using their shared toilet, according to an arrest report.

Investigators allege that Christopher Callen, 33, pummeled Amado Dominguez-Quevedo, 57, during a confrontation Thursday night inside their cell at the Monroe County Detention Center in Key West.

Callen (seen above) has been jailed since his arrest in late-September for failing to register as a sex offender with Florida officials (he was convicted of a sex offense in Colorado in 2012). Dominguez-Quevedo, locked up on $40,000 bond, has been in custody since his February arrest for aggravated battery and indecent exposure

Feeling Law & Orderish tonight and perhaps a tad Misanthropic. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

PHOENIX — U.S. Marshals shot and killed a fugitive Friday night in Phoenix. The man was wanted in California on murder and rape charges, the federal agency said.

Members of a U.S. Marshals Service task force exchanged gunfire with the wanted man near Sky Harbor International Airport, closing down the area for investigation as the fugitive was killed, Fox News reported.

100 The St. Jude story pisses me off. Just another hit piece against a good organization. The TL;DR version is: St. Jude has lots of money and pays for medical care and food and housing for families, but they should pay for even more because some people want more and they have money and it's not fair and blahblahblah...

Has it ever occurred to the fuckwad that wrote the article that, the reason St. Jude is able to help so many children is that they DON'T throw money around like a bunch of drunken sailors? And what kind of complete rubbish person complains that the meal wasn't fancy enough or that it's cruel that they ended up having to sleep in the car in the parking lot for a night while the hospital is TREATING THEIR CANCER-STRICKEN CHILDREN FOR FREE? If my kid had cancer and you were treating them for free, I'd sleep on the sidewalk or under a highway overpass before I'd have the unmitigated gall to complain that you weren't treating ME good enough.

True. Of course, nursing homes, by their very definition, are going to be full of people with severe comorbidities. 125 Average price is misleading. Median is what matters. There are cars out there that cost insane money like into the 7 figures that will skew averages. Plus the breakdown of cars bought would help. If 25% buy luxury cars and 75% but regular cars, that will also really skew the average.

The quote unquote average car buyer is not spending $46k on a new car. A Camry or Accord fairly well equipped which is the average car on the road can be had for $30k.

My completely uneducated guess is that the vaccine prevents too many "small sniffle" low viral load infections that provoke natural immune responses. Theoretically keeps the virus from spreading like doomsday wildfire, but, oh boy, watch out if you are exposed long enough to creep over the artificial protection threshold.

Down a 32 oz. Gatorade and eat a banana. I find that that usually does cramps in, which I get majorly (hands, feet, legs) when I am dehydrated after long hot sweaty day of work. Happened a few times this summer working on the house. That seems to knock them out quick. Sometimes two Gatorades.

White hot hatred for outfits that send me cheap crap I don't want trying to guilt me into a donation. St Judes did that at least monthly for two years after I gave them a modest donation and still send me crap years later. NOT ONE DIME to waste on pestering me for more, especially when you mail me cheap ass trinkets I don't want.

Bear in the woods type snoring where you could hear him stop breathing and snort himself back to normal every half hour. At least I didn't get that from him. I keep a bottle of Rolaids on my nightstand, eat them like candy when half-awake, but the real trick is avoiding any big meals after 4pm, otherwise I can't roll onto my side in bed without getting a wave of acid about 30 seconds later.

Jeong also ignores that while inflation benefits people who currently have a lot of fixed-rate debt (homeowners, pink-haired genderqueer people with masters in sociology and $250,000 in debt), life becomes a lot less fun for working class people as the inflation is priced into credit markets, making credit largely unaffordable. I remember in our electronics shop a new piece of test equipment for one device. So we had the old set and the new set. And we found out the hard way that both sets used the same keyed cannon plug for power, but they had swapped the hot and ground leads.

Was a tingle one never forgot so we promptly tagged which cable went to which set. About a month later ACC sent out a TCTO to tag the cables. We were a field unit, not a test and eval unit that should have caught this.

Eh, bad dude? He was extremely competent. Very intelligent. Charismatic. Utterly convinced his way was the right way. The Tetrarchy is such a clusterfuck of an idea that only a brilliant person would think it might work.

He did bring stability, and the Romans had given up on 'Freedom' a long ways back. The problem is the system of feudalism he instituted meant that local landowners (lords) could act independently of the state and be self sufficient and in turn it was in their interest to withhold workers from the legion press gangs.

In bringing stability he created a system that sewed the seeds of the fall of the western empire. It did not HAVE to be so (see Eastern empire or the feudal empires of the middle ages) it just worked out that way when you also threw in all the other shit.

Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at November 17, 2021 11:22 PM (kBuGL)

372 The Romans had devalued their currency so badly during the third century crisis that everything started to come apart. Enter Diocletian. He stabilized things by putting everything under rigid state control and essentially mandating a barter economy with a state set value on all goods and services. [ . . . ]
Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at November 17, 2021 11:07 PM (kBuGL)

Carlo Cipolla, an historical economist, pointed out once that since these state controlled prices were the same everywhere in the empire, the chances they were obeyed anywhere outside of Rome were negligible.
Barter probably came about because of the collapse of the money but would have been that way whether or not Diocletian set prices.

The Tyson game hens I bought had a guide on the back. I believe they recommended an hour at 375 (don't trust me on that temp, since I can't recall). If the bird weighs more than 18 oz, give it another 15 minutes. I looked up a trussing video, and basically salted and peppered the birds inside and out, and basted every 15 minutes with butter.

I usually like to make a wild rice mix to go with it, but for Thanksgiving, I'll make a bread stuffing and some turkey neck gravy to go with.

Then take the hen out and deglaze the pan with some red wine and chicken broth and reduce it until it makes a nice sauce.

432 Salt is said to be the basis for the word "salary", which has led to assertions Romans were paid in salt, or used as money. I suspect it was part of their pay, because salt historically has been very difficult to source at certain times and places. I bet it was not used so much as money per se, but as change, or to round off purchases.

The old General Stores in this country operated on three basic methods of payment. Actual cash money or specie, credit, and barter. The Romans (and everybody else in history) probably operated similar. Money, actual real genuine specie, was scarce enough that Barter was the coin of the realm, certainly for most poor people or at least the largest percentage.

For this reason, the emperor is seen by some writers as an early transgender figure and one of the first on record as seeking sex reassignment surgery. _wiki

During the middle ages, when usury was outlawed, often credit or loan agreements were set up for a cash amount to clear the debt, with the understanding that it could be repaid either in money or by barter, and also the agreements would not be written for the amount of the loan, but for the amount of the repayment to avoid charges of usury.

Sure was. It was a used engine from some car I parted out. I honed the cylinders with a 3-stone hone, picked my best set of used pistons, having numerous sets from which to pick. Selected the best used rings, and scuffed the O.D. of each ring with a sanding drum in a Dremel tool to deglaze it. Hand picked the best main and rod bearings from several sets, and Plasti-gauged them to ensure they were in spec for clearance. It was a deliberate experiment to see what could be done with essentially junk parts. Really, only two of the six cylinders failed badly, and most of that I would attribute to the oil rings having lost all tension.

The engine was really only intended to be a placeholder until I could build a really good overhauled (with new parts) 185 flathead six. But the car ended up being a daily driver both last year and this year, due to Covid border restrictions. If this rering job gets me through until April, it will have be a success.

The first victim knew her assailant. It was not stated so bluntly but reading between the lines she had apparently gone down on him on a couple of previous occasions. They scheduled the same kind of tryst for the girl's room at school. He wanted to dork her up the squeak hole, she refused and he wasn't willing to take no for an answer.

You're right, it was messy but only in the sense that it wasn't a purely random assault. Most rape cases the victim and the perpetrator know each other. It was unsurprising but a perfect illustration as well of why these "transgender bathroom policies" are guaranteed to end in tears.

I never represented it as a "rebuilt" engine. It was a cleaned-up, patched engine. And I deliberately painted it garish colors so that nobody would mistake it for either a stock engine or a rebuilt one. Block is bright red, head is gray, oil pan is dark metallic green, timing cover light metallic blue. Valve cover original Studebaker yellow, and it still shines, a little.

I have one on the floor of the garage at home. Block is .030 oversize, with next to zero wear on the bores, but pistons were stuck by neglect. But I just got a set of new .030 over pistons, so I can rebuild it just fine. I will send the crank out to be polished and/or ground undersize if need be. And a friend has offered me a good running 185 out of a '57 sedan that he wants to replace with a V8.

Wat Tyler's rebellion was an interesting and seldom mentioned episode of English history. In 1381, common people got fed up, they rebelled, and won a great victory. Then they lost their focus and were viciously betrayed, losing all that they had gained. Kind of like a 14th century Tea Party.

531 Hey everybody. Hey ONT!

Got another one of my patented questions for the Horde, particular Hordies who are ice hockey fans:

what in the world is *icing*????

I ask because it's mentioned in a classic Peanuts strip about hockey fans. I looked it up and never knew it existed. It sounds as if, if a puck hits the opponent's net from the "wrong" angle, the goal doesn't count??

Makes no sense to me. I always thought that in hockey, the object was to get your puck in the opponent's net as often as possible by any means necessary. Anyway it's no biggie, I don't understand American football either. :-)

Thanks in advance for any responses.

The crease is the small rectangular area in front of the net. The goalie's domain.

Icing is shooting the puck down the ice to get it out of play. I think it has to cross at least two lines, the center line and one blue line, to be called as icing. But, if it is a shot on goal, it's not icing.

545 I never represented it as a "rebuilt" engine.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 18, 2021 12:27 AM (P3gRi)

A frankenbaker, lol. yeah I had a feeling it was a piece together. Nice crank and bearings, but a few smoked pistons with huge spaces in the ring grooves, which takes some miles to do. And then there's...you. lol I used to pull those stunts on old harley engines just to see what I could get away with. A friend had a really, really tired engine and he had the brain storm of experimenting on it. I knurled a set of pistons to make them slightly bigger, knurled the guides, used valves from god knows how many different motors, and probably a dozen other "fixes". I think we used to new rings. Damn thing ran fine for a few years, then we redid the whole thing. We still laugh about that one.

Posted by: qdpsteve at November 18, 2021 12:52 AM (L2ZTs)

No, it's not that. If the play is in front of your goal, and you are hard-pressed, and fear you may lose control of the puck, and allow an opposing player to score, you ice the puck. Play stops, the referee or linesman calls for a faceoff in your zone, drops the puck, and play resumes. The "price" for icing the puck is that the faceoff is in your zone, and if the opposing team wins the faceoff, they could score a quick goal. The payoff is that the stoppage of play gives your team a moment to regroup, and takes the momentum away from the opponents. Usually happens many times in every game.

573 >> of "throwing a flag" in football began. It sounds suspiciously French in origin.

That intrigued me. I looked it up. Supposedly, back in the day, a Youngstown College coach, Dwight Beedle, invented it. Previously, a whistle was blown to indicate a penalty, and that was confusing, as a whistle was blown to indicate the play was over. Beedle supposedly asked his wife if she could come up with something colorful to be used. She sewed together some "flags" might out of old Halloween costumes.

He asked the referees to use, thrown them down, to signal a play. One of the referees, George McPhee loved it, and started using it. A commissioner of one of the college conferences loved it when he saw McPhee using it, and in 1943 adopted for whatever college conference he was over.

The NFL adopted it in 1948. The flags were originally white, but were later changed to yellow. They were originally weighted with BBs, but there was some unfortunate incident where a player was struck with the flag and the BBs got in his eye. They've been weighted with sand ever since.

578 Well both AOP and qdp have signed off, but I see AOP perfectly answered qdp's question about icing.

Hockey actually has very few "line" rules, compared to most sports. Basically, just offsides, and icing. AOP covered icing. Well, more complete answer is a team, while at even strength with the other team, firing the puck from *their* side of the center ice red line, beyond the opponent's goal line (outside the goal, of course, that would be a score), without any opposing player touching it, or being in a reasonable position to do so.

Rule prevents a team just killing the clock by firing the puck to the far end, without a disincentive.

580 Should have added while at even, *or greater*, strength, then the other team. A team with a numerical advantage during a penalty will be called for icing the puck if they do so, whereas the other side, which is "killing" the penalty, can do so without play stopping.

583
That BB incident occurred in 1999, and the player was Orlando Brown, who played for the Cleveland Browns. A ref threw a flag, and it went right above his face guard and hit him in his right eye.

He then shoved the ref, and was ejected from the game. They suspended him, but lifted it after it was learned he was temporality blinded. They used sand to weight the penalty flags ever since.

He sued the NFL for $200M, saying that incident ruined his career. It was settled for some undisclosed sum.

Brown was found dead in 2011, age 40. The coroner determined he died of diabetic ketoacidosis.

The idea was, that since in their view Germany had twice in one century caused world wars, after the present unpleasantness concluded they should be reduced to an entirely non-industrial, pastoral landscape completely incapable of waging war.

I sometimes suspect this is the general plan or a modification of it for America. So hobbled with onerous rules, regulations, and "environmental" restrictions, insourcing and outsourcing, open borders, saboteurs at every level of government, manufacturing decimated, etc. It certainly fits in effect if not intent.

You'll be stunned to hear that the formulation doesn't mean federal owned is open. This is national planning by the backdoor. You'll hear more about this. Some zealots saying BLG land where logging or mining could take place do not qualify.

Posted by: Pete Bog at November 18, 2021 01:35 AM (bzrNB)

592 Not sure about any "reset" - fed land ownership hasn't changed that much (in terms of area, or $), I don't think, in a long time. States like NV, AZ, NM, even CA and CO have enormous areas that have always been federal land. The bulk by % is basically remote, desert, or "waste". I think.

I'd be surpised if much less than 30% of total CONUS landmass isn't *already* completely or partially off-limits for development, and under federal control. No idea about any plans by the idiot children vandals now in control, but that stat by itself sounds like status quo ante.

603 587 Any Horde thoughts on satin vs. semi-gloss for a bathroom? I'm going with an indigo for the walls and a slight cream for the trim.

Semi-gloss is easier to clean and is less moisture permeable. Both are important in a high humidity area.

But you will get a bit more glare from reflected light. Bathrooms are typically brightly lit.

604 Semi-gloss it is! Finally, getting my bathroom repaired after some flooding 3 years ago. The subfloor was in remarkably good shape though there was some mold and damaged sink cabinet.

605 Nah, it's not the peasants that blame the Jews it's the influencers.

Influencers like DeBlasio.

606 According to wiki, the feds own/control 28% of the US landmass.

I thought it was higher than that.

Nonsense. The influencers may blame Jews because it works, but it's the peasants who believe it. Hell, throughout European history, all the important and/or rich people employed or had access to Jews for stuff that required literacy, education, and the ability to engage in financial matters barred to Christians (by Christians, ironically). Influencers didn't pick up torches and actually execute pogroms. That was dirty work.

609 Ever notice how so many Black Democrats apparently don't want to live or interact with White People, but then they'll use government force to push blacks into communities and industries that are mostly white (and which many blacks don't want to be part of in the first place) and then they'll complain about the white people in those communities and industries.

The loudest voice for segregation is the black liberal on TV, yet I bet they all live in upper class white neighborhoods.
